Our Quail story started Early In 2020. We hatched, brooded, and raised over two dozen quail...only to loose them all because the door was not latched đ. We tried again and hatched 16 quail in July 2020. This has been an excellent adventure and we highly recommend anyone with space (which means you đ ) raise quail: they are tiny, fit anywhere, are fun to raise, and will help you get a little bit closer to self sufficiency!

I for one Appreciate you and your videos thanks i too am in nor cal
Uncalled for.
@@SUSTOSAVAGE awesome! Where in NorCal?
You'll want to put a sand box in there for the quail to take dusk baths, any small box with light sand will work. Fine river sand works well.
yes! since the video we have been giving them sand! they love it!
Yep it helps all my different kinds of birds with mites and such!
We built our own quail hutch as well, but two levels. We wanted roll-out cages as well, but concerned about snakes or rats getting up in there and getting the eggs beforewe do. Have you had that problem?
I've seen someone mixing ashes as well. What are your thoughts?
Nice job guys! The quail hutch turned out great and Iâm glad you didnât have TOO many issues with it! đ Always enjoy having some time to catch up with yâall! - Jessalyn
Thanks! it is hard to keep up with all of our friends new content...thats the toughest part about being busy with youtube yourself. Thanks for checking in on us!
Great Job you did Erin and I am sure your quail family will be very happy, Have a Blessed and Prosperous Week!
So far so good! They seem happy! We hope you have a blessed week as well!â€ïž
Pool noodle for the egg bumper.
Hi!! Love this system! It looks simple, and sleek! Thanks so much for sharing! May I ask for an update? How have your quail been in it? Have you had to make any improvements? Did you end up adding weathering strips on the roll out?
Hi there! I found your video while looking for a DIY quail cage. I love yours. The proper space, design everything. I hope after a year they are still loving it. I do want to follow your lead and build a few of these. Thanks so much for sharing!
Welcome! Thanks for the kind comment.
Awesome cage! Do you by chance have a write up blueprint I could use to follow the build?
dude i have a school project for this(one person each) and i don't know shit about it. you helped me a lot as a student so thank you!đđ
Excellent job and well built - It's also big enough to give them a sand bath - I use a seed tray with a cover to keep down the amount of sand scattered - with a hole at each end for them to enter and leave - I know they will probably lay some of their eggs in it but it does keep them healthy and mite free - I put in a little DE and grit to help with shell formation - they pick what they want out of it and it's all natural....!
we are working on a video with the coop upgrades. we have a tray of DE but it could be added into the plan for sure.
I just got some quail two weeks ago and I will be using your build for mine I love it.
Great! And good luck, it works well!
the channels you mentioned are such great sources, they provide so much info and it helps
Yes, they are the know it allâs...we are just the newbies đ
@@4KidsandaFarm well im even more a newbie, i have 4 hens as of now, and im actually planning out the cost of raising quail
You shouldn't be so hard on your (diy) self. That is a genius method for quail egg retrieval.
Thank you for the vote of confidenceđ...itâs one of the things I would like to get better at đ
Nicely done. This one's my favorite!
That hutch is legit! Awesome job.
Rocky Creek Homestead thanks!
I think weâll get quail next year. Right now Iâm in the learning process so you are one of my teachers! đ
Oh good! So far it has been an excellent experience...I would say easier than chickens...but we havenât had them for the full experienceđ
Great cage! My husband and I are about to build ours and this is a very helpful guide. I really appreciate your work!
Hey thanks! And congratulations. Let us know how your quail adventure goes!
@@4KidsandaFarm Thanks! đ
I am new and will be getting my first Quails in a month. I love the cage you made . Do you have measurements and instructions posted some where? Thank you.
Wow. Great job. I like it very much!
I really like that pen. You did a great job on it.
Hey, Thanks Mike!
Nice clean build and sturdy.
I like the design. Good job. Dewalt makes a 1/4 crown stapler just like your Brad nailer that anchors the wire down solid. A sand box for the birds keeps them occupied. For the cage the only real change I would make is to put the door in the center. So you can reach the whole cage more easily. I also cover the bottom third of the doorway with a piece of wood. Keeps them from hopping out but I can still reach everything well.
Thank you very much for your video. My son and I just finished over the weekend the cage, it is very sturdy and nice looking. Greeting from hot Panama!
Christian Halbinger that is awesome! We are glad the design worked for you! Have you gotten any eggs yet? We should get some within the week đ
Yes, we have some already in an incubator we also made ourselves...
Christian Halbinger wow! Good luck! Quail are so fun.
I think you did good đ. Thanks for sharing
I'm gonna build this; I think I might incline the roof panel too. Many thanks!
Awesome! Let me know how it goes. We could have inclined the roof...it seems like wherever it is it has enough tilt for water to run off. Thanks for commenting and keep us updated đ
That is a very nice coop there that you built. You might want to put in a small tray with stuff for them to dust themselves in though
Hi! I came across you while searching how to grow out large numbers of quail at a time. Great Video, Im glad I found your channel. Nice To Meet You!
Hey! We have known you guys for a while. The TSC brooders and Gold Shaw farm lead us to you!
Great Jon!!
Awesome!! Thanks for sharing!!
Your roll-out is genius.
Exactly what I was looking for!
Iâm pissed. I just finished building an egg rollaway chicken coop, with an elaborate system, and I could have saved a lot of time and stress doing it like you did.đ€Șđ. Thanks for the vid. Iâll be using it to build our quail coop this weekend.đđŸ
So glad it is helpful! It really is an easy design to duplicate!
@@4KidsandaFarm exactly! I didnât put any second thoughts into it. Donât feel the need to add or take away anything. And with the cost of lumber, materials are minimal. Thank again!
Iâll have to give this a shot! We have 100 quail in the incubators and 10 duck eggs. Love raising meat birds, layers and canât wait for pigs and cows but we need a bigger piece of land for them. Great video! My wife and I are awaiting our 6th baby and in the Shasta county area of nor cal if you guys are close reach out!
We use the thin rubber shelf liner used in drawers or refrigerator. We cut enough for 1/3 to 1/2 the cage so they can rest their feet. Take it out , replace with clean one, hose off dirty one and let dry. They love it. That is a beautiful hutch.
Thatâs a great ideaâŠwe have also seen plastic hardware cloth that also may do the trick. We have not found any issues with our quails feet though.
@@4KidsandaFarm I would like to know the dimension of the hardware cloth squares. I would like the poop to fall through the cage floor so I can use it in my compost pile. One person told us that the poop cakes up if the squares are just 1/4".
@@MyBarbara90 we use 1/4 inchâŠwe have had no issues with buildupâŠthe quail walk on it again and it falls through. đ
Thats an awesome idea and I just happened to order some for my kitchen
@@4KidsandaFarm In your video, I see 1/2". I use 1/4" & it's much smaller. I use a solid bottom with pine shavings, but am considering switching to a rollout like this. I came here to see if you had any issues, since you mentioned your quail used to be on pine shavings also. Sounds llike it worked out fine.
You did a fantastic job and took so much into consideration. Nicely done. - So. Cal Homesteading :)
I like the self pat on the back! Congrats on a job well done đș
Haha! Thanks! We got to be proud of what we do!
I like your building the sides, top, and bottom as separate builds!!
It definitely made it easier...and if we have to modify it it will be easier to take it apart. Thanks for commenting đ
Great job Aaron.
Thanks Sandy! I will have to build a few more! The next ones will not take me as long.
I saw cute quails at a pet store in Sydney, Australia last weekend! I thought, is keeping quails a thing? I had no idea!
Investigating keeping them further has been really cool!
Anyways very much enjoyed ur video! & Iâm climbing aboard ur family homestead ideals!
Planning to move to Spain in a few years to cultivate some proper land, so shall keep this design in mind! Thnx mate!
Right on dude! Spain from Australia? Why the move?
Looks good.
Man this is an awesome quail cage build! Very simple and effective! I will be using this exact design I think when I build mine! Do you happen to have plans at all?
Same looking for plans for this !
Like your design. Been looking at several lately. We are on 5 acres as well, started our Farmstead a yr ago, and continuing to expand. New sub here.

Nice build i mean really for a first time build that you say your not good doing that was awesome dude. Im thinking about raising quail myself so im looking at a lot of CZcams videos and your build was really cool.
Thanks Charlie! What a crazy cool compliment. I definitely am not an engineer ( improbably would make a lot of contractors cringe đŹ) but it was simple. If you have a few tools you really can make an easy quail cage!
Excellent video. The quail hutch turned out great đ
Thanks đ we are a few days in to it and it really is working out well! congrats on the 1K! how does it feel?
It feels great, weâre just kicked back and counting our pennies đ
Looks great guys. Iâm thinking of adding quail in the spring we just got done with our last round of meat birds minus 2 turkeys so Iâm looking forward to take a break for the fall.
its nice to butcher in seasons huh? quail are really easy care. we have yet to process one but that is coming soon.
@@4KidsandaFarm one question. Did you put anything under to catch their droppings? Iâve got to imagine thatâll stack up after while.
@@jamesndelilahpinckney914 we do not...we move it frequently but have thought about placing a tote underneath it and covering the dropping with leaves or bark in layers to create a compost...
Sticky-backed felt as to seal door drafts could lessen the no act of those rolling eggs. Nice work.
great idea!
I loved the build⊠professionally done.. one suggestion though.. try painting the wire mesh black.. it gives a more see through effect as it does not reflect light unlike the white mesh.. gives a better view of whatâs happening inside the cage..!
Just found your channel! I appreciate the content. You guys work very hard.
Much appreciated!
Ok I just found this video 11 months after you made it so I have to ask before I build it this weekend.....is there anything you wish you had done differently? I thought you did a great job and I'm glad you kept in the parts where you messed up because I might have done the same thing. Thank you for sharing this with us!
yes, so i would put the door in the middle or one on the left and one on the right. Otherwise it is works great. It is easy to move, it can be inside or outside
@@4KidsandaFarm thank you!
@@4KidsandaFarm you know you can just cut the hardware cloth in the center to fit and move the door....
Same here. Just discovered your channel. Happy to find a homesteader in NCAL.
Thank you, love it.
Our pleasure! It's working out great so far!
Really nice build. Turned out awesome.
Thanks a bunch! it has worked well so far...working on an update build!

Walker Farm Fam we will see how the egg roll our works once we start getting eggs. Did you start getting them around 8 weeks old?
4 Kids and a Farm First egg was at 6 weeks and by 8 weeks everyone was laying.
weather strip works well for my Quail pens.....Also has a sticky side to make it stay.......Larry @ Scoot's Organic
Thanks for that conformation. It seems like an easy solution to just run some along that lumber on the inside. another project for another day.
Great job
Thanks Susan! We want to do an update video for some modifications we have made.
Excellent yor job freand i happy
Thanks Mitzi!
quail eggs are much thicker than chicken eggs so there's less of a chance that the little eggs will crack hitting the wood but I guess if you're concerned about fractures when you're incubating, you could use a thin foam weather strip on the wood. Thanks for sharing your build.
yeah, we have not found on cracked. but you are right...in order to keep them incubator quality we could change the flooring.
Itâs a good pen, I have a lot of snakes here in central Texas,so I would have to build a lid of some kind to cover the roll out part.
Hey Bobby, yeah It shouldn't be to hard to put a flap on the front that will keep out snakes. Thanks for the complement and good luck with your quail!
nice cage keep it up
Thanks, will do!
Hello friend i m watching from Nepal , your work is priseworthy keep it up .
Wow, thanks so much, we just started getting eggs and the system works well!
Great video! Thanks, for taking the time to make, and share. I really like your cage a lot, and we want to build one similar to yours. Was thinking to put the hardware cloth face on the inside of the cage, instead of the outside. I figure quail would not poop on the Side or front wood, if mounted this way. Your thoughts please?
Thank you very much, and take care
Looks good!!! I had plans available... check out how we did the water and feed
I will check it out! I think the waterer we have covered but we do need a good feeder design.
Great job! Thanks for letting us know that you messed up the orientation of the hardware cloth. It's difficult for me to find confidence in DIY projects as well. Especially if the videos I watch are all shot without any mistakes. Thanks đ
Thanks Michael. Oh man I make plenty of mistakes...more than most. If I can build this so can you! đ
Amazing
Great video. Very nicely made. I am about ready to build my own. Watched a lot of quail hutch builds recently. Just curious everyone has a different design. Some fully enclosed, some with just a wind break. Is this just due to the weather where you live? Or more of a hide out from predators, safe space? Do they need it to breed? Thanks
It probably has to do with the weather but quail also need some privacy to feel comfortable from predators. So a little of both...but preference for the human also has a lot to do with it. It can be easier just to nail up plywood rather than wrestle with hardware cloth đ hope that was helpful and thanks for taking the time to comment.
I'm building this. I really appreciate you making this video. I have a question though, how much slope did you give the floor so the eggs would roll? Did you just eyeball it, or did you have a specific height in the back? Would love to see written directions for this. Thank you

So cool!
Always enjoy your videos.....Larry @ Scoot's Organic
Glad you like them! Thanks Larry!
Awesome video thx đžđđŒ
This looks pretty cool but when I built my cold frame it had the tendency to lean so I was told that a criss cross between the front and back legs would stabilize it. Did you have trouble with stability?
Excellent craftsmanship and a cool pair of shades. I'm in Australia and keep my quail in 2 x 1 x 1 meter (6.5 x 3.2 x 3.2 ft) cages on the ground. The bottom of the cages aren't meshed so they nip at fresh grass all day and dust-bathe.
Am yet to get screwed over by foxes!
thanks Matt! We have seen multiple builds...and we are always intrigued by the pasture inspired ones. everything likes the taste of quail...even foxes.
Very well done, my quail are 8 weeks old today, just got first eggs and cull. I built my hutch and it works but I'm not happy with it, found your video today and love it man, very well done! I've been filming my journey and want to do a similar build to yours but I'll give credit :) đ thanks man
Hi, new sub here. Learning alot about quail.âđœRose
Thanks for the sub! we are learning tons too! its an adventure and its fun so its totally worth perusing.
Looks great! I had a couple questions. What angel did you place the bottom tray at? and How high is the gap for the eggs? Thanks. Can't wait to make one myself.
the slope is a 15 degree angle about. really i made it just enough to have the 1.5 inch gap for the eggs to role through...so really it was more about the space then the angle đ (we do have to grab an egg or two in the cage every once in a while.)
My son has put a rubber tub that like 16 inches wide and 3-4 inches tall amd put dirt in it so they can take dust bath. They love it!!
Nice job! I enjoyed watching, it's helped me as I try and figure out how I want to do mine. What kind of slope did you use for the floor and what size gap did you leave for the eggs to roll out? Thanks!! Again, excellent job!
Itâs an inch and a half slope with a one inch gap...perfect for all but the largest quail eggs...I didnât want to make it much bigger just in case a predator could sneak under it.
Thank you!!
THANKS FOR THE IDEA I JUST SUBSCRIBED TO HELP YA GUYS, I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH THE SAME PROBLEM OVER AND OVER AGAIN. THERE ARE TIMES THAT I WANNA GIVE UP ON RAISING QUAIL SO I SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND THIS VIDEO..đđđ

This is very interesting. Iâm trying to research and decide on getting Quail. Thanks for sharing this. If you wanna see Bees, look up mine. Iâm a beekeeper. đ
Bees would be an incredible addition to our homestead! Quail, so far, are very easy care, I would almost venture into saying they are easier than chickens đ
@@4KidsandaFarm Thanks for the info. Iâm doing my research now. Seems like they donât require much room.
great build! Could you please include a schematic or a list of what sizes all parts were after cutting? Iâm eager to try this build for myself!
He has one in description.
Great cage, congrats! What is the length and width of the roof, also how tall is the cage? Thanks!
The height is 4 feet from ground to roof. 4 foot wide 2.5 feed deep and 2 feet from bottom of cage to top. It is scalable to whatever size you need. We currently have 15 quail in there now and itâs about the perfect size! Thanks for taking the time to comment!

I love your repurposed ping pong table! What a great workspace.

Fantastic! Quail are a fun birdâŠhatching is the way to go in our opinion.
Excellent
Thanks Pedro!
This looks fantastic! One question regarding egg rollout feature. How do you prevent snakes from entering there? I have lots of snakes.
We donât have predatory snakes like someâŠbut a flap on hinges could easily be added to the design.
This is the question I was looking through comments for. Thanks for asking/answering. Iâve had a snake take bluebird eggs so Iâm sure one would be after quail eggs.
i made this with fake grass at the bottom of the rollout cage and it works greate
great idea!
How tall was the gap for the eggs to roll out? Awesome build by the way you did a great job!! Easy, simple, not over complicated!!
I build flat cages, with 10 inch head space. Then adjusting angle by tilting entire cage. First year using as Grow-Out Pens, going just find. They work well for transporting large or small numbers too.
that's awesome! how many quail do you grow out a year. sounds like your pretty high production.
@@4KidsandaFarm :...I grow-out about 100 for me ( Big Ones ). We incubate, hatch & grow chicks mostly....about 1,000 this year, 3,000 chicks was the most. They come in in Egg cartons and leave, as chicks, in carboard boxes. No shortage of compost.

Terri Drollinger thanks so much...we will have to rewatch those videos of the Walkers. Thank you for the compliments!
Dust bathing is super important for quails.
You really should include that.

Hey Susan! It was 2 x 2. I believe the whole room and the whole room is 2 x 2âŠ.and the floor uses both 2 x 2 and 2 x 4. Iâm sorry I wasnât more explicit about the measurementsâŠin hindsight I really had no idea this video would end up being so popular. If you have any questions please message me. @@susanwise1287 fantastic! Either message it to us on Instagram or you can email us at 4kidsandafarm@gmail.com. We would love to see your coop!
Turned out nice. Are you worried about the eggs rolling down and being in the open like that at all while it's outside? I'm wondering if a little lift up cover for them might be a good idea
I'm not crazy worried about it but that would be easy to put on there. The more I think about it that is a great Idea. Thanks!
The lack of a cover is my comment too. The eggs are susceptible to racoons, possums, wild birds, chickens, snakes... But more ominously, the incursion of snakes that can harm/eat your quail. I am in SE Texas, and cover is necessary here.
