đ DAVIDâS BEEN HERE SHIRTS & MERCH: teespring.com/stores/davids-b...
When I traveled to northeast India in March of 2019, I was thrilled to find myself in a stunningly beautiful area of the country that I didnât even know existed just a few months earlier. Everything here is so different from other parts of India. Come along with me as I explore northeast India!
As my first day in Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, continued, my friend Paul took me to eat a Khasi thali. This thali is so different from every other thali Iâve ever had, including the ones I had in Assam! Then we headed up to Shillong Peak to get some insane views of the city!
We made our way to Police Bazaar, which is where the restaurant is located. Police Bazaar is the most commercial hub in Shillong. You can buy clothing, street food, accessories, shoes, and more.
The restaurant Paul took me to was very unique. It was pretty small and all the booths face the same direction. We ordered our thali, which contained lots of non-veg dishes including chicken and pork.
I started with the jadoh, which is a Khasi rice with pork that is reminiscent of a risotto or paella. The pork is pretty fatty! Then I tried a fresh tomato salad with green beans, followed by a radish salad, which was crunchy and reminded me of bamboo. I liked it a lot!
Next, I went with the pork salad. Itâs like a Russian salad with potato, onion, and pork. I loved it! Itâs fatty and kind of tastes like a ceviche. I also loved the fattiness of the pork curry.
The dal mash was very nice and super light, with no heat to it. The fermented fish chutney was very potent, fishy, and spicy. The mint chutney was amazing with the rice. The mint was so strong but so good! The banana flower chutney was like a plantain mash. The mashed potatoes were light and contained some onion. The mashed potato with cauliflower I tried next had a creamy element that I liked a lot.
Then I went with the pork fat, which was delicious and gelatinous. I also loved the dense pork ball. The next dish was chicken curry with potatoes. The curry was insane! I loved it so much! Then I went with a pepper. It took me a few bites for the heat to kick in, but when it did, it was intense! While I cooled my mouth down with some water and rice, it was Paulâs turn to try!
The next thing I tried was a fermented soybean sauce, which looked super rich and delicious. I tried it with some of the jadoh. It was really rich and earthy. I had something similar to it in Japan! But for me, the star of the meal was the chicken curry. It was so good, I had to thank the owner, who was in love with me!
After our meal, we visited the bazaar, where Paul showed me a beautiful handmade shawl. After a bit of bargaining, I bought four in total for the women in my family. Theyâre great for winter days!
Before we set off for Shillong Peak, we went to get a double espresso with ice. I got it the way I like it, with no sugar. It was perfect! Exactly what I needed to continue on with my day! Our total came to 210 rupees, or about $4 U.S.
Then it was time for Shillong Peak, but we hit a huge traffic jam! It was super tight but we squeezed through the cars and pedestrians. The drive by scooter took about 15 minutes. It got chilly on the way, so I recommend dressing warm when you come to Shillong!
After not being able to visit the peak due to me being a foreigner and the ongoing situation with Pakistan, Paul took me to another area of the peak with great views. We got out and walked past a Catholic graveyard, which reminded me of a cemetery Iâd visited in Guatemala because of the colors.
The landscape and greenery of this area felt very European. We reached the lookout point, but the view of the city wasnât great because it was kind of gloomy. It was still beautiful!
Then we headed to a cafĂ©, we got an insane view of Shillong! Itâs gorgeous! This part of India is such a different world. Then we went back to Police Bazaar to get a beer. The lounge offered an amazing view of the bazaar below. Instead of a beer, I got some smooth Indian whiskey. It was so good!

If u don't wanna hear any honking sounds in traffic than you should probably visit Aizawl, Mizoram. Its a nice place. People are friendly and cool. Mizoram is the only state in India where traffic rules is strict. U can't honk in the traffic at all and u can't break the line when you're waiting for the green light in signal

Hi
Wow, that Jadoh stall of Police Bazar definitely had a good upgrade, it is properly renovated now. They've even added a lot of new items and different new mixes in their menu.
And also there price list...I had a plate of jadoh here in 2013 it was âč50 back then in 2018 it was âč90 or so... although quantity remained the same...
Shillong, the old time (n still) fav place of people of Manipur....there r still lots n loads of people even people from my colony studying in Shillong....for rich n poor the best place for people of Manipur to visit or to study...such a beautiful place...amazing weather....

Keep it up David.đ
The guide is so cool. Great going Mate! Paul's the right man!
David, I think this is one of the best Indian Thali sampling vlogs that you have done. Maybe because the food is so different from the new Delhi style northern Indian type of meals. I, for one, really appreciate the dish by dish explanation as well. You are indeed an enthusiastic eater!! I wonder what the cost for this Thali is? Those wraps that you bought for your family, absolutely beautiful! I wish you had showing us all four so that we could see the colorsâŠ
Hy frnd
Man you're like the coolest and the most fun person to hang out with, I love your vlogs man, and the way you compliment each and every dish makes it even more fun to watch, keep up the good work man. â€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïž

Shillong my birthplace. I was born in 18th Oct, 1979 at Military Hospital, 101 Shillong, Meghalaya when my dad served in an Indian Army from Assam Regiment. But I lived and grew up in Lamka(Churachandpur), Manipur which is a very place compare to Shillong. Anyway God bless you.
David,
Thanks for showcasing the gastronomic aspect of Shillong.
I still regret I couldnt visit Shillong when I was in Guwahati for a month due to a project , unfortunately there were some problems back then and the highway was blocked coz of that , hope I get another chance again :)
Those shawl aren't handmade they are handloom machine made.. He should have purchased from good handloom authentic one.. So pity he said he wanted as souvenir to his mom

Feeling" jawdud namar ngm ioh bam ja Shillong. I miss Shillong
Hats off to Paul who really gave excellent guide to David!!! Meghalaya is and always be my favourite state.
The term Meghalaya, which is of Sanskrit origin, was given by SP Chatterjee, Professor Emeritus, department of geography, Calcutta University. It is a combination of two words: Megham meaning clouds and alayam meaning abode. Hence, its entirety Meghalaya signifies abode of the clouds. So the pronunciation is exactly what you said. #Davidbeenhere đđœđđœ
PB has changed drastically over years. Still miss those new papers stalls at the PB entrance. Woww ... Really good video. First iewduh and now pb. So nostalgic...

The food seems so delecious đ„
You should've tried the beef , especially syrwa ( Sir-wah ) , beef soup . DohShaiñ ( Doah-Shine) , beef cutlet . Doh Masi tyrkhong ( Doah-Tir-Khung) Dried beef . And Lung siej ( Loong-Sage ) bamboo shoot . And alot more . Especially Doh jem ( Doah-Gem ) Fried intestines . And Doh Snam ( Doah-Snahm) Blood sausage . It's amazing bro ughhhh you missed out alot bro. That's like just the starting course of our traditional cuisines.

David banana flower is consumed almost everywhere in north east india, its very tasty, you can even make pickle out of it.Im from Mizoram,me and my mom used to prepare banana flower pickle during my younger days.Right now im barely at home and studying in Delhi so,i really missed cuisine over there
4:16 LoL. 'No Beef' sign on the wall even in Khasi restaurant.đđ
If you're khasi or even from shillong you'd probably know the reason behind that . And you putting that word "khasi" over there seems like you're one of the local too if not then that sucks
What is the reason btw?
@@priyankeebordoloi6676 its their tradition. Some local tradition here in shillong don't eat beef and that owner doesn't either so in order to keep their work simple when people ask if there is beef or not hence the notice "no beef".
best meat is beef
That sign is also for attracting other indian or foreign tourists to their shop who don't eat beef. That way the restaurant runs smoothly and customers and tourists are happy with what they eat without worry
You should have tried Dzoku Valley in Northeast
you look so happy in this video, David ! Keep posting more
Thanks bro for visiting our lovely place..Its a real pleasure to know people appreciate the natural beauty of our place...i wish to Meet you if you ever come back for another trip....Stay safe brođđ
That guy is so gud.. he even bargain fo David heads off bruh.. we need someone trusted guy like u for all foreigner
He even paid for the coffee. Good lad

I might buy one of your shirt I love how you explained where and what you ate. I took notes.
You are the best foreigner in Shillong David... Welcome... And thank you Paul being Friendly with him.
Sad thing is most part of Shillong is captured by military bases. People have limited access to roam around Shillong towns because of half of it is consumed by the army..
