  • Before I traveled to the states of Assam and Meghalaya in northeast India in March of 2019, I did tons of research to learn about these unique areas of the country. But no amount of research could prepare me for what I found when I got there. From beautiful national parks to picturesque landscapes to some of the best food I’ve ever eaten, this is a truly special part of India. I can’t wait to share more of it with you. Come along with me as I explore northeast India!

On the morning of my third day in Meghalaya, my friend Paul and I linked back up to have breakfast in Police Bazaar. We’d be eating a mix of traditional Indian and traditional Khasi food. We started our day at a viewpoint overlooking Shillong, where you can see the plateaus and Himalayas in the distance on sunny days.
It was a chilly start to the day, but it was warming up. We arrived at Police Bazaar and immediately headed to the street vendors. The street food stalls here are open from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., so come early if you want to have breakfast. I couldn’t wait to try the food there. I was hungry!
We started with some puri sabzi, which consisted of a deflated puri and an amazing-looking squash sabzi with onion. Break the puri with one hand if you can, put some sabzi on it, and just go to town on it. It was slightly spicy and the puri was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The sabzi was also nice and oily. The oil takes it to the next level! It’s phenomenal and only costs 20 rupees/$0.29 U.S.!
Then it was time to have some traditional Khasi food! I went with pork salad, pork innards, pork fat, chicken, and meatballs with some chapati. I broke off a piece and filled it with the organ meat. It was so juicy and kind of gelatinous. It reminded me of brain. Next was the pork salad, which contains onions and potato. It’s like a Russian salad but with pork. I’d had it several times already, but I could never get tired of it!
Then I went with the pork fat, which was so flavorful and gelatinous. It was like pork Jell-O! This one was a little tougher and reminded me of bacon. Then I went with the meatball, which was dense and rich in amazing flavor. It was so amazing! One of the best meatballs I’d ever had!
Next, I tried the chicken, which has a lot of bones in it. You have to struggle a bit to get into it. It was a little chewy, but the amount of bones in it was too much for me. I preferred the pork. I love the pork in Meghalaya is unreal. It’s very hard to find in other parts of India, but it’s extremely common in Meghalaya. It’s so good!
Then I had some chicken thigh that was bathed in a delicious curry, followed by the jadoh, or rice with pork. Then I tried the pickled bamboo shoots with chilies. I love the taste of bamboo. The pickled version is a little potent and the chili adds some heat.
Next was the dried, smoked beef curry. The curry was light but rich, while the meat was a lot like tender beef jerky. It contained lots of spices but wasn’t spicy!
Everything I had came to just 130 rupees/$1.86 U.S., so it’s on the more expensive side for this area of India, but is still pretty inexpensive for the amount of food you get.
I wanted to get more food after that, so I got some pitha, which is a pounded rice patty with coconut and sugar. It was a little different from the Assamese version I’d had. It was airy and thick and was sweet like a dessert! I love coconut! It was super filling and very tasty.
Then I had some chai, which is my favorite thing to drink in India! It contained ginger and milk and wasn’t too hot. I hadn’t seen it much in Assam and Meghayala, so I was happy to find some. It was very creamy and frothy!
I finished up with some egg toast, which is a piece of toast cooked into super fluffy eggs with onion, spices, and chilies. I’d had some in Kolkata and loved it. The bread wasn’t super toasted, but it was still so good! And it was spicy!
I hope you guys enjoyed coming with me to Police Bazaar for breakfast in Shillong! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel!

I love that you are educating your viewers like me on India:). I am American and I’m sure there are many others that see an Indian person and our mind starts to think of what the media has presented us with, which is not very good. We can not distinguish the difference between the Middle East and those we have been in conflict with, and all the millions of other nations beside them. Your videos awaken our intelligence with this part of the world and I appreciate the knowledge:). Also, I have also learned to appreciate their cuisine!!! I am in ❤️ with it, lol!

Biggest difference between Indian food and Northeastern food( except Assam and tripura) is that we do not use Indian spices at all and we are more focused on meat be it pork , beef or chicken and we like the pure undiluted flavour of the meat.
