Exploring northeast India is one of the greatest travel experiences of my life. I made the trip to the states of Assam and Meghalaya back in March of 2019 and found myself entranced by everything I found there. The people are warm, the breathtaking landscapes go on for miles, the culture is vibrant and inviting, and the food is as unique and flavorful as they come. Join me as I explore more of northeast India!
As my fourth day in Meghalaya continued after an adventure in Mawlynnong, the cleanest city in Asia, my friend Paul took me to the Dawki area near the Indian/Bangladeshi border. I couldnât wait to explore it and have some more amazing Meghalaya food like river fish, beef, and jackfruit with chutneys!
We encountered a major traffic jam involving three buses trying to squeeze down the same narrow road! Iâd never seen anything like it before. It was insane! After 30 minutes, we finally were able to get moving but we still had 30 more minutes to go.
As we rode toward Shnongpdeng, I could hear lots of animals in the surrounding jungle. The road on the way was super bumpy! The bumps in the road give what I like to call âIndian massages!â
We arrived in Shnongpdeng. It cost 50 rupees/$0.71 U.S. to enter the town. Once there, we set off toward the suspension bridge over the river. The water here is crystal clear. There were people bathing in it! The view from up top was incredible! There were lots hills and mountains in every direction and lots of boats down below. The landscape reminded me of my time in Bosnia!
From there, we crossed the river, headed down the rocky path and crossed another low, bamboo bridge just inches above the water. The bamboo was really sturdy. From there, I could see the clear water up close. Iâd never seen water this clear before. It was amazingâŠand freezing! Some people swim and camp here.
Iâd built up an appetite throughout the day, so we headed over to a little hut for lunch, where they were cooking fish from the river. Our feast included fish curry, fish fry, rice, beef curry, dal, jackfruit, a jungle herb, and tomato chutney.
I started with the fish curry, which had a greenish tint to it. It was super light and fishy. I could see bones in the fish, so I had to be careful. But the fish was super juicy and tasty. I loved it even with all the bones in it.
Next was the super tender beef curry. It was nice and fatty and reminded me of oxtail. It was so juicy and fell apart in my mouth! This is the way I love beef: super soft and tender. It was a lot better than the fish!
The jackfruit was like a mix between spinach, bamboo, and mushrooms. It was so earthy and contained onion and pepper. Then I moved on to the tomato chutney, which contained onions and chilies and reminded me of a salsa. It felt like I was eating something from Mexico. It was really hot!
Next was the jungle vegetable, which was a little bitter and reminded me of spinach. Then I went with the fish fry and picked it apart to get rid of the bones. It was like a fish fritter. It was crunchy and salty and a little dense. There were lots of big spines in it, so I ate around them. The fish fry with the tomato chutney was amazing! I loved the crispy skin!
Then I tried the dal with rice. It was light and had a fruity flavor. The beef, jackfruit, and tomato chutney were the winners for me. I mixed some chutney with the jackfruit, which was an amazing combination. Then I tried a chili, which wasnât so hot.
Then we headed out on a boat on the river! I was given a life jacket beforehand and then we set out. I should have brought my bathing suit! From the boat, I could see people fishing and people jumping from nearby cliffs. The water was shallow at first, but got a lot deeper as we continued. This area made me feel like I was in Central America or the Amazon!
I hope you guys enjoyed coming along on my Dawki adventure!

Indian dishes become more delicious when you eat with your hand instead of spoons. Try to eat using your hand, just a tip.đ
Lots of love from Assamâ€
I m also from assamđ
Yup.. Thats right.. Our dishes are optimised for eating with hand only... Thats why our fish n meat cuts are in bone... You just remove the bones as you eat...
Pritam Bhattacharjee Meghalaya is clean now which state are u if we are talking about hygieneđ
Pritam Bhattacharjee thanks to non tribalsđ
Pritam Bhattacharjee Yeah they were. Non tribal is the most decent way to put it. As compared to non khasis dominated locality the khasis dominated localities are quite clean.

I'm so happy that you tried the jackfruit and liked it. It's pretty unknown in the west and to western folk.
It's really a very underrated fruit.
Vegan cuisine in the U.S at least utilizes it as a meat replacement a lot. First time I had it was a vegan pulled âporkâ sandwich . Itâs delicious
What's the name of that dish? I'm dying to make it here in the US. It looks delicious.
Yeah Jackfruit is damn underrated. It should have at least 1 michilen star.

What a feast! Great video đ
You are right water in India is not good but in meghalaya water is so fresh it's coming from the mountains not like the mainland India, in northeast india especially in hills area water is so Fresh
It's still not safe to drink from rivers, no matter how how crystal clear it is. There'd be animal and bird poop, insect carcasses, bacteria etc.
But locals who drink that water since childhood might develop an immunity and could drink and not get sick from it.
I fell sick and vommited after consuming only a tiny portion of river water which looked fresh in Meghalaya
