In March of 2019, I took an amazing, two-week trip to the states of Assam and Meghalaya in northeast India. I had the time of my life exploring the incredible culture, fascinating history, beautiful sites, and heavenly food of this region of the country. It truly blew me away. Iâm so excited that I get to share my adventures there with you guys! Join me as I explore the marvels and wonders of northeast India!
My fourth day in Meghalaya was my busiest yet, with a day trip away from Shillong that took me to Malwynnong (the cleanest village in Asia) in the morning and the Dawki area near the border with Bangladesh in the afternoon. But my day wasnât over yet! I still needed to get some dinner on our way back to Shillong!
I could not wait to eat some more blood sausage and I was really looking forward to having some Chinese food. Chinese cuisine is big in northeast India, so I was so excited about trying some. It would take us an hour to get back to the town where the blood sausage is and another 30-40 minutes to get to the Chinese food.
On the way, I couldnât help but marvel at the hilly, green, and mountainous landscapes. I certainly understand why the British nicknamed it the Scotland of the East when they arrived here! The only place Iâd ever visited that had comparable landscapes was the sky kingdom of Lesotho in southern Africa.
We stopped to get a stunning look at the sunset over the foggy mountains and valleys below. Then we continued on and finally arrived in the village of Laitlyngkot. I targeted the blood sausage stall, which many people from Shillong travel for an hour to eat! The woman chops it up on a banana leaf and serves it for 70 rupees/$1 U.S. for 250 grams.
The blood sausage is served with onion as well as chili and pepper. It was hot and juicy and so spicy! I could taste the intestines and blood. It was so good! I couldnât get enough of it! It was addictive!
As we traveled on, Paul taught me a bit about Meghalaya, including its name origins and the three major tribes of the state and where they can be found.
Even though I stuffed myself with blood sausage earlier, I was still pumped about having some Chinese food in the town of Mylliem. I hadnât had any in Meghalaya yet and I couldnât wait to dig into some!
We stopped at Soilyna Huts Restaurant in Mylliem for dinner, which sells Indian, Chinese, and Khasi food. The restaurant was really big and had lots of dining halls. We went with some pork chow (pork with Chinese noodles) and paneer chili (my favorite Indo-Chinese dish) with peppers and spring onion.
I started with the chow. The noodles were really fine, like glass noodles. They were tasty and oily, with some fatty pork and delicious Chinese flavors. I could feel the fattiness of the pork permeating the noodles. The pork is what makes them! I added some spicy sauce, which wasnât too hot. It was similar to a sriracha. The noodles reminded me of wok-fried noodles Iâd get from a Chinese food restaurant. They transported me back to my time in China!
Then I started on the paneer chili. The cottage cheese had a nice, red, glazy sauce on it. It tasted kind of like duck sauce. I went for a hot pepper next and then dug back into the chow. Then I tried the cow with some of the spicy momo sauce. It wasnât too hot but it opened my sinuses! Then it was Paulâs turn to dig in.
I finished up with some red tea before we hit the road for another 25 minutes and arrived back in Shillong. What an amazing way to cap off my adventures in Meghalaya. I had the time of my life there! I have to thank my boy Paul for making this incredible adventure possible. I would have been lost without him!
I hope you enjoyed coming along with me on my Meghalaya street food and Chinese food dinner! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel so you donât miss any of my upcoming travel/food videos from around the world!
