5 Things I Hate About Owning a 90's Honda

  • This is the harsh reality of owning a 90's Honda and 5 things I HATE about these cars. In today's video I (for once) focus on the negatives of being a Honda owner rather than the rainbows and unicorns. Feelings might be hurt.
As you all know by now, I love my 1999 Honda Civic Coupe. I talk a lot about how much I enjoy owning this car and modifying it in my videos. However, there are some downsides to owning these iconic cars that I rarely talk about. So I wanted to make this video to highlight the few things I hate (some outside my control) and give some insight from a guy that's learned the hard way. This video will cover 90's Honda's as a whole (not just Honda Civics). This includes the 3 different Generations of 90's Civics (EF, EG, EK), Preludes, CRX, Del Sol, Accord, and even Acura Integra's. Pretty much anything in that popular 90's realm of Honda's!
Honda theft is one of the BIGGEST things that plagues every 90's Honda owner. These cars get stolen or parts stolen from them EVERY SINGLE DAY. Theft is one of the MOST violating things that can happen to a person and leave them with a never-ending feeling of anxiety. So I talk about why Honda's get stolen and ways on how to prevent car or part theft. I've been a victim to Honda theft on several occasions and it SUCKS. So let's make the Honda world a better place and talk about why stealing Hondas is simply not worth it.
I talk about build quality and safety of these cars, but this topic is somewhat subjective. I DO think that these cars are built well for the price, but there are some downsides. Honda's are arguably some of the most modded and worked on vehicles in the world. People enjoy modifying these cars and tearing things apart to rebuild them. While the engines are the strong point of this topic, its everything else where the quality is just...Cheaper. Yes I realize that I'm being picky about a sub 20k car and that you get what you pay for. However, the body of these cars are thin and definitely not the safest cars on the market. The interiors can become brittle and break without effort. The paint is lucky to last more than 20 years, and so on.
I lastly talk about the perception of other crappy Honda's and how these cars can inevitably become money pits. I've been a 16 year kid with bad taste in the past and did not spend my money wisely. I've installed bad mods, wasted money, and cried tears over things because I cut corners. The point of me making these Honda Civic project videos is to show people how to build a clean Honda with realistic expectations. I didn't have this kind of content when I was a kid, so I hope my experience and information is passed on to make Honda's clean again. Try not to get too offended about my points in this video, I'm just very passionate about this stuff. With that said, enjoy!
Are there things you HATE about being a 90's Honda owner? Leave a comment below telling me why!
Thanks to Bart Cepek for the thumbnail photo and JW Media/Basic Brando for the rolling shots!

Hide kill switches. I live 1.5 hours south of Atlanta. The place where a friend of mine had 2 stolen out of his yard at the same time one night. Every Honda I had, has had 2 kill switches. One for a fuel pump relay, and one for that switch. Both would have to be activated and they were hidden. Also, get a rear door handle for your front doors without key holes. If you have keyless entry. Then your screwed right? 2nd hidden hood latch release cable somewhere behind a bumper or wheel well. That way you can get to the battery and won’t be stranded.

But my buddy got his civic and integra stolen same time. Roll back then a dolly all at once. But a shaved key is how they got in both or so he was told cause they were caught. Both cars recovered but the civic was a total loss and the integra had the b20v pulled out and some interior parts missing. I hate thieves. We should be able to leave keys in at all time doors unlocked and never worry :/

I’ve had 2 Honda Civics both EX models, a 97 (my 1st car) and a 2k (my 2nd) both I modified it. 2nd car had more suspension mods on it, and a GT wing and fiberglass front lip. Both in major accidents.
I know the plight of what I hated about my Honda - but remember Honda owners hating on Honda ( you’re not hating , you’re stating )
      And now I have a 04’ Nissan 350Z that I’ve have for 17yrs.
Get a car that has what you want. If it’s a Honda Honda or something else. Do what you love. And a real car guy doesn’t hate on another person’s car that they are fixing up. Just stating the obvious.
But seriously the D16 Series SOHC is an easy engine to build and modify. And as a Honda guy at heart 💜 Save the D-Series engine. If I ever get another Honda again it would be an older Hatch. And I would put in D16Y8 engine ( of the EX model ) in an 89 or 90 hatch as a work vehicle for my cleaning business. 👍🏼

I owned a 6th gen accord sedan (98-02) and one day found myself hitting a tree at about 25 - 30 mph. That was a wild ride, but I'll say this those two air bags went off like a shotgun blast. They worked like they were supposed to keeping me from smashing my face on the steering wheel. What sold on Honda safety was how the car transferred the impact around me and to the rear of the car. The front windshield even small crack in it, didnt break, but the rear window shattered. I wasn't hurt just a bit dazed for a moment. Car crashes are not fun lol do avoid them if possible. Be safe.

For number 1, the first thing people should do is get an alarm AND a club. I have both for my 96 civic. Next, make a project to hide your alarm. Most installers just put it underneath the dashboard and call it a day. I hid mine in a different location and ran alarm wire with my factory wire so its really hard to tell what wire is alarm wire. I also added a killswitch that activates with my alarm.

Yet, I couldn't stop watching the next video, and the next. And the next. I like your down to earth attitude, and I think the reason the Civic is much more popular with your audience over the sweet Evo, is because it's a dream available to most people - it's within reach for most of us to spend $1,500 on a car and take it from there. Dang, you really called me out on my build.
Rattle-canned black (genuinely, it could look WORSE!), beat to hell and straight-piped.
To be fair though, like myself, I imagine most people's Honda is the A to B car. I door dash in mine, and when you put 30k+ miles a year on a car, the paint is the bottom of your list.
And in my defense I bought it beat up and rattle-canned. Previous owner(s) chopped the muffler too. Straight pipe was pretty cheap, and kept the exhaust gas out of the cabin.
As a matter of fact, it's actually a bonus. A beat up, loud and ugly pos is the last thing someone would want to steal.
    I coulllllld do without all the middle fingers from everyone (and I mean e v e r y o n e) though but I'll get over it.

I definitely understand the points he makes in this video. My girlfriend owns a red 01' EX that looks very similar to this one, and just installing the radio the panels definitely felt like they were going to snap if they were handled with any sort of force.
Also, interesting point about the airbag. Not two weeks after she bought it, her brother (who had basically totaled two cars prior) was driving it and got into a front end accident that totally messed up the front, but the airbag didn't deploy. I thought it was just because he was driving under 25 Mph, but it seems like this may be a pattern with these Honda's.

I've owned all different kind of Honda's from slammed civics, preludes, accords and integras to a lifted CRV but my current 92 eg sedan with B16a2 swap is probably rowdiest of em all. Slammed with complete front and rear suspension swap from 94 integra. Steering is soooooo much lighter, bigger brakes/hubs and rear disk brakes. My preventative measures for theft on a 90s Honda below.. And this worked on my 98' Integra for a few years before I sold it. Parked out in SoCal and even in Portland where, IMO- theft is worse than SoCal. Integra had some goodies as well, OEM ITR lip, Racing Hart 3pc wheels, on coilovers, etc.
    - Instead of a steering wheel club, use the AutoLock Pro. Our steering wheels can be cut pretty easily. The AutoLock Pro locks onto your clutch pedal, and not many thieves want to spend their time down there in the pedal box. Of course, if you want to go the extra mile, you can use both lol.
    - 2-Way Pager as you mentioned. I had my alarm LED installed near the coin pocket by where your left knee sits, it flashes and lets you see the AutoLock installed down there. Also, take time to actually tuck the alarm brain deep into the dash. I also relocated the alarm horn at the firewall, below the intake manifold. Many installers just put it out in the open, essentially allowing the thieves to get access to your car, pop the hood and cut the horn. To go along with this, spend extra and get a back-up battery, extra sensors for hood/trunk/doors.
    - Kill switch as you mentioned again. If you choose to install one, make it look as clean and sleek as possible. Kill switch is only as good as the install, so spend some time to make it look like wiring came from factory.
    - Do the hood cable relocation. Our hood cable runs right under the driver side fender well. Thieves can easily pull it to open your hood and disable your alarm before entering. This is a free mod, and very easy to do. Just relocate it into the engine bay.
    - And to compound onto it, if you don't mind spending extra money, invest in LoJack. Not really a theft deterrent, but damn does it come in handy if your car gets stolen.
