  • We discuss the short history of the Honda CRX, a car that helped to define the future of FWD hot hatches. We drive and discuss what makes this car unique and yet sad. While there have been better Hondas, this car has the staying power along with the NSX, Integra Type R, and S2000. There are a few aside from the VW Rabbit, and Golf that generated so much excitement.

I owned an early model CRX HF followed by a CRX Si back in the 1980’s. They were both fantastic cars - the HF got 50+ mpg, up to the low 60’s on long highway trips. An interesting thing about the HF was that the wheels were made from magnesium - so true “mag” wheels. It wasn’t exactly fast, but in the ‘80’s very few cars were, and this thing was just so efficient.
They both were exceptionally comfortable offering so much leg room I could actually get the seat back far enough that I was stretching to push the clutch in and I’m no small guy (6’ 2”). I remember one summer trip when I took the Si up to Canada and then ran it back through the UP of Michigan comfortably cruising at 100mph. It’s one of the vehicles I wish I had kept in storage for posterity sake.

I'm 48 and my first car back in 93 was a used 89 Civic Si Hatch. My best friend(and still so to this day after my wife) also bought a used 90 CRX Si. To say as guys in our early 20's that we loved these practical yet a hoot to drive hard cars that were reliable beyond anything else fun available at the time, and still wouldn't cost a fortune to fuel up, would be an understatement!. I still judge every other car I've owned and driven, many much more powerful, against those cars. Sure it may very well be nostalgia that clouds my opinion, but very few measure up in sheer fun. Hell the reason my daily driver commuter car is a 2012 Fit Sport, is because as much as I thought I wanted a Civic Si in 2013 when I bought my Fit, as soon as I drove the Fit Sport, it was the closest thing overall feel to my 89 Civic Si; I could ring out and have a blast in the corners, without getting myself in trouble like I did with my short lived MKV GTI.

It was before bulbous styling, electric power steering, traction control, cameras everywhere, silly CVTs and paddles, giant pillars blocking your view.. you were a bigger part of the driving experience. No one bought sports cars with an automatic, sac religious. Over the years I’ve enhanced the handling with Neuspeed sway bars, KW coil overs, and kept the engine Stock. appreciate my 2015 Scion (only recently purchased with 31k in 2020.. now splits time with bicycles and the GTI) for its airbags, operating AC, power locks/windows, timing chains, and quiet ride in comparison on a long trip.. but I get caught up in the fun so much with my GTI still. Those comfy grippy seats, simple rolling sunroof, classic timeless looks.. It’s forever for me!

I didn't have an Si-R, but I had a 1990 CRX Si, with a JDM B16A swap from a 1989 Honda Integra XSi, complete with a Y1 transmission that had a limited slip differential. It had literally every bolt-on bell and whistle, including an Apexi air fuel VTEC controller, paired with a chipped PR0 ECU. There was no red line.
The interior of the back was gutted. It was lowered 1.5" on adjustable coilovers, with a front strut bar, and a rear sway bar. The climate control was deleted. The intake was from a turbo Miata kit. It had a bigger throttle body, a DC Sports header, and a straight-through exhaust, with a deleted cat. It was LOUD. A kid I knew blew up his Type R while racing, and I replaced the stock cams with the cams from his ITR. I would wear out a set of Falken Azenis sport tires every six months or so.
I used to shift around 8.5, but there were a couple times that I accidentally wound it out to 12. It was street-tuned, but it put down 166 to the wheels on a mobile dyno.
    That car was INCREDIBLY fun.
Alas, it was stolen and never recovered. If i ever get a chance, I will buy another one without a second thought.

Same, one of my favorite cars I ever owned was a '90 CRX with a B16 and I changed out the trailing arm and front lower suspension arm bushings for Mugen units, what a response machine! Too bad the car just rusted out and I ended up with a DC2 next.

@KeitheR81 He starts the video by saying this car was fun, light etc etc and mentions affordable and attainable……🙂
I remember these very well when I was a teen and began driving in 91 in South Africa .
These were definitely not affordable to the average South African as Honda was pitched at the high end of the Japanese market in SA. Honda was sold through Mercedes Benz SA and they had price tags to match the premium Merc brand ….by that I mean much higher than Toyota, Mazda, Mitsubishi and Nissan, whom they were competing with.
Honda specs in SA were premium so I guess you were paying for what you got.
I never did get to own a CRX but I did manage get myself a Honda Ballade 160i Luxline 94 model which was a lovely car.

Mood instantly better. To a lesser extent, I felt the same way about my bugeye WRX. I feel bad for people who'll never get to experience what this is like. They'll never know the pure joy that these cars were. Lean, tight, no computer nagging you. Just driving experience. Like my Ninja 600 in college. Not a computer in sight. I miss these so much.

Back in the early 90s, JDM SiR CRXs ruled the small capacity class in amateur motorsport in my neck of the woods (Sydney Australia). They were so far ahead of any other hot hatch or oldschool small rwd car, I had a Corolla FX GT and later an AE86, and I just couldn’t catch these guys. IIRC B16A CRXs won their class in the state runoffs for all of the early 90s. I love these things and would love to have one: but everyone who owned one in period loved them too, and they were all used up a long time ago. Awesome vid, awesome car.

It saddens me that here in America, you guys didn't get a lot of the good stuff. Specifically the early alfas. Like the Alfasud with a 1.5L with 2 webbers from factory, with the brakes in the middle for weight distro, the BMW 323 that you had to keep 2 bags of cement in or the rear would always run around you, the Porsche 944 that you could buy in the 90's for literally the price of a used skoda. I love the CRX and what it stands for but it was not the only car on the road giving these experiences, though it is probably the most iconic.

I consider myself extremely lucky to have an old 1990 crx si. I dream of building a b20 vtec and installing it as a perfect daily driver and get all the eccessories working again such as air conditioning and make the sunroof work again. That being said after fighting like hell to save and find and work hard a couple winters ago to install a replacement d16a6. It now runs and drives again. I just got home from a trip to home depot and it's the most fun car hands down I have ever owned. to make this car even more special it was my first car I owned since 16 years old Now 32. My uncle who died of cancer used to have fun working on this with me in his garage and we drove this car together. this car has so much sentimental value to me it's unlike anything I've ever owed. It's so inexpensive to insure, cheap on gas. hard to believe its "just a civic". feels like so much more. I hope someday I can fix it up and truly make it great. I've painted it several times. rebuild engines and swapped transaxles. I hope to strip it down and custom build it and restore it from the ground up someday. Im so lucky to have it. This video was awesome!
