The first Trident motor was developed by Bert Hopwood and Doug Hele in 1964, a running prototype (the P1) was ready in 1965. Hopwood and Hele worked on the Trident project in secrecy in their spare time. When Hopwood and Hele eventually showed the P1 to Edward Turner, he said that there wasn't a need for a motorcycle with more than two cylinders, so the three cylinder motor project was shelved until BSA / Triumph heard rumours that Honda was developing a Four cylinder engine. They quickly produced the BSA Rocket 3 and the Triumph Trident, these machines were released to the public in 1968. The Honda CB750 was released in 1969. If Turner had given the go ahead for the Trident project in1965,it would have predated the Honda four by four years, that would have given BSA / Triumph enough time to develop a SOHC or even a DOHC triple. The Trident could have been similar to the Laverda triples which came along in the 1970's, the Laverda Jota was the fastest production motorcycle when it was introduced in 1976.
I've got a 650 class motorcycle that most people can't say they have. 1977 (the year I was born) Yamaha XS650. Hoping to have it back on the road in a couple months.

I say this as someone who owns a 2019 SV650. The Suzuki is a much more "basic" bike. There's no rider modes, the suspension is cheaper, and it's running an engine that's largely been unchanged since 2003. I much prefer the styling on the SV650, though, especially mine with the grey tank and red frame. It just looks cool as hell. The Suzuki is a lot cheaper too. I don't know what dealers are letting the Trident go for, but I was able to walk out with a brand new 2019 SV650 ABS in late 2020 for $7,500 CAD cash out the door (taxes included). That's $6,100 USD, waaay below MSRP. The Trident is listed at $9,000 CAD MSRP for the non-ABS model. I wouldn't call it an unfair comparison, but you have to ask yourself if the nicer suspension, rider modes, and the styling are worth that much more money to you.
@@nickstick18 Ah some great points thanks for the reply. In Thailand the prices aren't that far apart actually, mainly because I think the Suzuki is an import where the Triumph is manufactured here. I think they get a break on duties because of that. The SV650A starts at 289,000 baht, where the Trident 660 starts at 309,000 baht. I missed a chance at a used sv650 at about half price of new (uncommon here as things tend to hold their value more for all products). Another consideration are a bunch of Monster 795's available 2nd hand for 100-150k Baht.

I'm getting quoted $10,500 out the door for the triumph trident 660. Just seems too high for a bike starting at 8k. Feel like the Honda CB / CBR 650 is a better value.

This bike is not worth buying ...... in Australia, we only get the "a2 compliant" version here for 13k ride away, where as you can pick up the mt07ho ride away for 12.5k depending on which dealer you go to.
Most likely the reason Yam is comparing to the MT is because the XSR has a premium cost for the fancy looks - and since the platform is the exact same there is no reason to add extra cost to the comparison.
I own at 2019 Street Twin and a 2020 TIger 900 GT Pro - happy with both. I sat on the Trident …. I am 6 feet tall and 175 lbs and the Trident just seems too small for me. Nice bike for fun but a bit too small even for me
Pretty much entry level Triumphs, TT600 or the speed four? They're essentially the same bike just tuned different and naked vs full plastics. Maybe you want to live the adv life the Tiger is calling your name.
No and no. Aprilia are known for their durability, and Triumph are doing well with their recent bikes today and the past decade. Anyone claiming either is unreliable, simply has a bias and probably claims all Japanese bikes will run 100k
It's high time bmw returns to its roots with a pushrod, air-cooled boxer twin 650 like the r65, but with more power. They really don't have a decent starter bike in the middleweight class - and the g310 really, really doesn't count. They're absolutely sleeping on this market.
I have a new trident. I love it but I do have a problem with the cooling fan. Took it back to the shop and they have to order a new one. Still waiting on the part a week later. It's not a relay or connection issue the fan was just bad
@@drummer12films quickshifters are dope, but I can think of a few reasons why one should not be on a Trident: 1) It's advertised as a beginner bike, you know, the kind of motorcycle you start out on to better understand the fundamentals of a motorcycle. Without an actual shifter on there, you're missing out on a lot of the fundamentals and basic mechanics of riding a motorcycle. Hand and foot coordination is incredibly important, and not learning how to shift? Oh boy... 2) It is a standard motorcycle with absolutely zero torque, not the kind of thing that you are going to be hitting the track with, or doing literally anything else that a quickshifter is used for to make it so dope. Street Triple with a quickshifter on the other hand? Hells yes. 3) It is really unnecessary. I understand the convenience and neat toy factor, but that's it. It is totally impractical for virtually any other street or twisty riding (where you are going to spend literally all of your time between two gears). TLDR: Yeah it's dope, but I wouldn't because of the class of bike the Trident is, its low power, and it being really unnecessary.
Thanks for a great video YAM! Really love your videos... even when not looking for a new bike... great way to clear my mind on a launch break 👍👍😎 I have a question about CB650R vs Trident You tested both CB650R 2021 and the Trident (actually any input for all commenters will be appreciated 🙏) I'm looking for an all-rounder commuter do-it-all (Can't afford a garage full of "options") You rode & tested both, any thoughts/recommendations? I'm currently deciding between those two... Test drove the CB and will the Trident soon Any info will be appreciated **The CB650R usually cheaper, but currently I got a deal from my local dealer which makes even more - about 2000$ cheaper than the Trident in my country, with this in mind is the Trident still even worth considering?** Thanks!
I thought I was a Triumph simp who also loved the Tuono. Your RS 660 videos are reforming me into a full blooded Aprilia simp. Between that and already owning a Street Triple, I’m no longer interested in the Trident.
What about the sv650? I’m having a hard choice between these two. The sv650 is almost 2k cheaper but just doesn’t look as good I really like that 3 cylinder sound along with styling
Vs the Kawasaki, in internet says his price is 7400€ (in Spain/Europe), but if you go to a shop (spain they sell you about 6400€, so it's not "only" 800$ It's way more difference in price
Bit of an odd one for me because my heart is set on the XSR700 - even though suspension and brake spec isn't as good as the Trident, but that engine is so so fun, the looks are a perfect mix of neo and retro for me. And the difference in build quality between MT07 and Trident seems to be greater than XSR700 and trident. Also the apparent inability to to much in terms of light touring with the trident due to poor luggage space (will see what aftermarket does) is a bit of a kicker for me even though I mostly commute. Additionally, I'm from Australia and I've heard that unlike the XSR700 and others, they can't be derestricted - and triumph won't be shipping a full power version. I can definitely appreciate the trident as being a great bike for the price etc but between the points I mentioned already and the looks not being as retro as I'd like, I'm finding myself leaning towards the XSR700 as I'll also be able to get one second hand for cheaper. Also XSR900 seems like too crazy a machine for me, I think I'd prefer the more playful yet relaxed character of the XSR700. What do others think?
@@Psyk0pepper I'm 260 in full gear, but I lift. I'd say the only issue I run into with size is with a full boot the shifter is a bit cramped. Otherwise it's a deep seat but tall bike.

Why did you(and pretty much everyone else) avoid comparing it to SV650? It also has linear throttle response, breaks have been upgraded to 4 pot calipers since 2019, exhaust tone is as good or even better(depending on preference) and where I live it costs significantly less then the Trident.

If Trident 660 and CB650R were priced the same (which they are, in my country) which one would you choose?
CB650R!
what about Trident vs SV650? which is the better emotional machine?
Pretty much entry level Triumphs, TT600 or the speed four? They're essentially the same bike just tuned different and naked vs full plastics. Maybe you want to live the adv life the Tiger is calling your name.
Isn't the Triumph and the Aprilia not one of the less reliable manufacturers. It will definitely be harder to get some spare parts on the cheap.
KTM cheap TFT display is exactly that. Cheap, jenky, not covered well by warranty.
I have a new trident. I love it but I do have a problem with the cooling fan. Took it back to the shop and they have to order a new one. Still waiting on the part a week later. It's not a relay or connection issue the fan was just bad
I wish I could get my first motorcycle but can’t afford it! lol signed up for giveaway but no chance I win
same except i haven’t even tried the giveaway
Am I the only person that is wondering why anybody would put a quickshifter on a Trident 660?
Yes yes you are
@@Branman50314 why would you put a quick shifter on a Trident 660?
@@jgcapers3860 because quickshifters are dope? why wouldn’t you
@@drummer12films quickshifters are dope, but I can think of a few reasons why one should not be on a Trident:
1) It's advertised as a beginner bike, you know, the kind of motorcycle you start out on to better understand the fundamentals of a motorcycle.
@@jgcapers3860 Honestly after reading this, I can say you’ve made some solid points. Fair enough
You have funny reviews like a quick movie including some history...
Thanks for a great video YAM!
Really love your videos... even when not looking for a new bike... great way to clear my mind on a launch break 👍👍😎
I have a question about CB650R vs Trident
You tested both CB650R 2021 and the Trident (actually any input for all commenters will be appreciated 🙏)
I'm looking for an all-rounder commuter do-it-all (Can't afford a garage full of "options")
You rode & tested both, any thoughts/recommendations?
I'm currently deciding between those two... Test drove the CB and will the Trident soon
Any info will be appreciated
**The CB650R usually cheaper, but currently I got a deal from my local dealer which makes even more - about 2000$ cheaper than the Trident in my country,
with this in mind is the Trident still even worth considering?**
Thanks!
Just patiently waiting for that Hayabusa to get a turbo.....do it for the SQUIDS
Will the Triumph be as durable and last as long as a Honda CB650R? Because Honda's engines are built to last and to take a beating.
Could you Puweez compare a BMW K75 to a modern 750.... just wondering how bad my bike is now compared to youngsters...
So when are you getting the new Speed Tripple 1200 in?
Trippple?
Is the big Triumph logo a decal that can be removed or is it under the clear coat ? I love the matte black but the big logo is just to much for me!
Love the Trident review. Will Spite get an opportunity to review it as well. I’m on the taller side, 6’1 wouldn’t mind seeing him on this bike.
I'm 6'3
Same
I'm floating around 6'1 and have one. It's about perfect for me
@@patrickmcclure8040 I'm 300 lbs. That's my concern
@@Psyk0pepper I'm 260 in full gear, but I lift. I'd say the only issue I run into with size is with a full boot the shifter is a bit cramped. Otherwise it's a deep seat but tall bike.
When is the rsv4 video coming from laguna seca
hey uuuuh, I bought merch a Lil while ago, do I still get access to the discord for buying it, or do I have to do the monthly sub?
Does Spite fit on that thing? How about a big guy review on that sled?
They've been making a 660cc street triple since like 2015 maybe earlier 🤔
He keeps stating that New trident is going to retail around $8000 American however every dealer that I have spoken with in southeastern Michigan says you’re looking at about 10 grand out the door when looking at my money what I can get For $1000 more I think AKTM would be the ticket
Mine was $ 9300 OTD, even with high Cali taxes.
What about a trident vs. a svartpilen 701
I would really like if they offered an accessory rear fender that encloses more of the rear wheel.
Why in my country Triumph is more expensive than the Honda CB650
Because the full colour tft dash of the ktm looks trash
Is the trident any good for a 6.2 tall and 265 pounds heavy rider?
I wonder how will MV Agusta respond to the Trident
Imagine they come up with something like a Brutale 600. I'd buy it right away. Absolutely love the MVs
@@Blitzkrieg63 me too. And they might start making 650's soon in the upcoming years
They had a Brutale 675, also a really cool bike
I wish they had put the speed twin gauges on the Trident.
Why did you(and pretty much everyone else) avoid comparing it to SV650? It also has linear throttle response, breaks have been upgraded to 4 pot calipers since 2019, exhaust tone is as good or even better(depending on preference) and where I live it costs significantly less then the Trident.
Is the quickshifter up and down?
I was so super lucky that the dealer down the road from me has two coming in next week, and I was able to snag a deposit on that matte black boi!! But my impatience is killing me. At least I have yammie to soothe the soul!
What do you mean by "better power curve"? The dyno curve is same?
I don't have card of any way I koun this lotry
Just put a deposit on mine and this video couldn’t have come in a better time. 😁
Are they reliable?
Here in Manila trident is 100$ more expensive than the cb. But the trident is a head turner!
Sold my 74 trident to buy a new one... Only a 4 month wait.
It's really competitor to the XSR700
I just can't make up my mind between all the 650 naked bikes...
