What Happens When You Drink Too Much Water

  • We couldn't live without water. But if we drink too much, it can wreak havoc on our brain and body. Drinking more water than your kidneys can process can throw your blood sodium levels out of balance. That's called water intoxication. And in extreme cases, it can cause brain damage, comas, and even death.

Following is a transcript of the video:
What do you think of when you hear the word poison? Arsenic? Cyanide? How about water?
Life couldn’t exist without water. But in the right circumstance... Water can be as dangerous as any poison.
Here's what happens when you drink too much water.
Your kidneys filter out excess waste and water from your bloodstream. But they can only process 800-1,000 mL of water an hour. And if you somehow manage to drink more than that without throwing up, you can run into trouble. Because you’re drinking faster than your kidneys can process it. So the excess ends up in your cells.
Normally, your cells are surrounded by a carefully-balanced solution of sodium and water, which flows in and out through tiny holes in the cellular membrane, so it keeps the sodium concentration both in and out of the cell balanced.
But when you drink too much water, the sodium solution gets diluted. It’s not salty enough. So some of that extra water rushes into the cell to restore balance and that causes it to swell up.
Doctors call this water intoxication and it’s a big problem. Now, most of your cells can handle the swelling to a degree since soft, flexible tissue like fat and muscle can stretch.
But for the cells in your brain, it’s another story, because your skull isn’t stretchy.
    It’s bone. It’s hard - like a rock.
So, as your brain swells, it builds up the pressure in your head.
At first, you might experience headaches, confusion, or drowsiness.
But as the pressure increases, you risk brain damage, coma, and even death. And it could all be over in less than ten hours.
A 64-year-old woman, for example, died the same evening after drinking between 30-40 glasses of water. And a group of US Army trainees suffered vomiting and seizes after downing over 2 liters per hour after a tough day of training.
But it’s marathon runners who need to be especially careful. A study found that 1 in 6 marathon runners develop at least mild water intoxication because the race stresses their body, including the kidneys. So, they don’t excrete water as efficiently, which can cause water to back up into the blood more easily.
People with certain kidney issues are also vulnerable since they can’t properly process water and the problem isn’t unique to water.
For example, the same thing can happen if you down too much beer at once. That’s called potomania.
The good news is that there’s an easy way to stay safe. The average healthy adult needs somewhere around 3-4 liters of water a day. And since this can come from food and other drinks too, drink when you’re thirsty, and then stop.

Peeing completely clear means you're drinking a little bit too much water, that or it passed through you really fast. Which is common with a UTI that makes you feel like you have to pee every 10 or so minutes, yet only pass small amounts. So if you're experiencing UTI symptoms along with it, see a doctor.

I once got water intoxication and it was one of the scariest moments in my life. Somehow i felt so thirsty after a long and active day that i drank at least 5 litres of water in one hour and i had already had maybe 1.5-2 litres earlier that day already. My whole body and head ached and all i could do is lie in bed and peed as often as i could. After about 4-5 hours of that i started to feel better finally. All i could think during that was "well this would be a silly way to die"

I might’ve had a mild version of this last night, I drank a ton of water in a short amount of time to clear food pieces from my mouth (I like to get rid of food pieces in my mouth before brushing my teeth if I did eat right before the planned time, as seeing the food pieces from my mouth in the sink is gross as hell ngl) and I got nauseous, my thinking seemed to be alright though
I also experienced period-like cramping and a mild, come and go headache
I had to pee very often (every minute or two, sometimes a few) and my pee was awfully clear. I laid down and didn’t drink water and eventually the nausea began to get better and I began to pee less, i woke up the following morning and my pee was yellow, and I got myself to drink water again like 8/9 hours later as I felt thirsty
I never ended up throwing up, just nausea

My doctor told me several years after looking over my lab work that I drink entirely too much water, before he even asked me how much water I drink every day. I laughed and said, "That's new! I've worked for doctors and have never, ever heard them tell any patient they drink TOO MUCH WATER. What makes you say that?"
He knew because my lab values on sodium, which we all have a naturally occurring amount in our bodies, potassium and iron were so low, they were almost non-existent. Because of drinking as much water as I do and have for years, it's continuously flushed out of my system, which in and of itself can and will cause health related issues if I didn't reign it in some.

It involves the process of osmosis where the water molecules move from an area of higher concentration to lower concentration through a semi permeable membrane that can be found in cells. Water molecules move into an area where the concentration of solvent/water is low so they can equalize it. Meaning that area has a huge amount of solute. Take an egg for example. When the egg is placed in water it will bloat. Just like the cell in this video. Water molecules move into egg's cell to equalize the concentration because egg contains solute(salt). Same as for dehydration. When the egg is placed in a hypertonic solution (huge amout of solute) it will shrink. Water from egg's cell will move into the solution to also equalize it.
