Nearly half of Americans don’t brush their teeth enough. This opens the door for a bacteria invasion, leading to tooth decay and gum disease. Even worse, you might increase your risk for issues like kidney disease and dementia. The following is a transcript of the video.
Meet Streptococcus mutans. He’s a bacterium and…a bit of a slob. But this isn’t just any mess. It’s what’s on your teeth! You see, “Strep” and all his roommates live inside your mouth, feeding off the sugar and protein in your food. When they’re done they excrete a slimy substance ALL OVER your pearly whites.
The end result is a bacteria-ridden pigsty, called biofilm. Now a little biofilm isn’t going to hurt you. It’s only when you stop brushing it away that things can get ugly. And not only for your teeth. It just so happens that “Strep” and his friends are a downright threat to your life.
Nearly half of Americans don’t brush their teeth enough. And when food builds up in those nooks and crannies, you’re inviting a host of bacteria to the party - including your gum line. The perfect place for bacteria to camp out in even greater numbers! Which irritate and inflame your gums, causing tenderness and bleeding.
But that’s just the start! Soon enough, that infection will trigger your immune system. Which sends fighter cells to battle the bacteria. This creates a hostile environment for the bacteria, which is what you want. But it can also damage the cells in nearby tissue and bone.
6 months to years later, that tissue and bone will eventually die. At this point, you don’t have gingivitis anymore. You have something much worse: periodontal disease. No more tissue and bone means no structural support. So, your gums separate from your teeth forming pockets that quickly become extra space for “Strep” and his friends. Which further infects your gums, causing your teeth to fall out.
Now, you may think this could never happen to you but about 10% of Americans between ages 50-64 have lost not just one or two, but ALL of their teeth! And to make matters worse, “Strep” and his buddies may enter your bloodstream, where they’ll wreak havoc on your organs, too.
For example, in one study, people with periodontal disease were 4.5 times more likely to have chronic kidney disease than people with healthy gums. And another study found that people in a retirement community who didn’t brush their teeth daily, had up to a 65% greater risk of dementia. Last but not least, there’s the increased risk of developing certain cancers:
To be fair, these risks can also be the result of poor hygiene in general, but the message remains clear: Brush. Your. Teeth. It’s worth the extra 4 minutes a day. - Věda a technologie

OHHH I GET IT
Yeah true
Most people are cheapskates who use inferior crap, so it doesn't matter
When I was a child I truly didn't care about brushing my teeth. I had cavities and pain, but eventually those teeth fell out as they should. That's when I started to care for my teeth. A fresh start.
I am now 25, and even though I have a near perfect dental hygiene (I am aware of what I eat and drink, brush 2 times a day and floss, the only thing I sometimes skip is dental elixir), I have early stage periodontal desease and had to treat two small cavities (the first ever since loosing my baby teeth and without going to the dentist for nearly 3 years due to Covid). Me and my dentist found out that my medication for endometriosis leaves me more vulnerable to periodontal desease and the stress I endured during the last two years only worsened it. Sometimes it's not only the lack of hygiene that will damage your teeth and gums, there are other factors. So always take a closer look at all the variables.
Im 24, and I have moderate periodontitis and have 7 fillings done, and I still have my teeth. I wish I hadn't been so lazy in the past about my teeth. However, Im glad it isn't worse now that I have gotten it under control.

Yeah brother that’s def a sign of depression… I was the exact same way, except I’d brush maybe 3-5 times in a month. Went to the dentist for the first time in years the other day. There, the pain from all the cleaning done to my gums made me lock in and I’m forcing myself to brush my teeth and hydrate and all that. Been almost a week, hoping I don’t fall into that hole again. There’s a certain joy that comes from it too, cause it helped motivate me to buy better clothes, working shoes, and practice proper shaving and showering habits. I didn't hardly brush throughout my entire childhood up into my teens.
I would brush maybe once or twice a week.
That resulted in about 23 of my 29 teeth to develop cavities and become extremely weak.
It's my greatest regret in life at this point.
@ghost mall it would smell like fish
Funny thing, I hardly ever brushed my teeth as a kid. Only about once a month. I never had any cavities in my baby teeth. When I became a teen, I made sure I brushed my teeth much more often so I don't get cavities. I still don't brush as much as I should, only about once a day, usually. getting cavities in your baby teeth is not as bad as getting them in your adult teeth, Unless that cavity spread to your adult teeth.
Just because i didn't get cavities yet, doesn't mean I won't. I am lucky to have naturally straight teeth and to keep my wisdom teeth. I don't want to give that up.
I tended to brush three or four times a week. Sometimes I skipped due to feeling tired or because I just didn't want to brush them.

As a dental assistant, I think this video is a perfect educational tool that is needed. Thank you, Science Insider.
Edit: Most cavities start between the teeth. Floss first to clear out the bacteria and food from between the teeth. Then brush to remove everything.
If you brush first, then floss, you're just depositing the stuff between the teeth onto the area you just brushed.
Also, the term "brush & floss" was coined for advertising because it sounded better than "floss & brush".
So the correct way to clean your teeth is
Flossing > bussing > mouth wash?
@@tasrin9877 Yes, clean between the teeth first, brush and rinse. Then non-alcoholic mouthwash.
Wow. Good to know the order, thanks for sharing!
@@shimmypolkaroo What happens if we used mouthwash (Crest) that contained alcohol in description behind the bottle?
@@kavigorana Use them last, after flossing & brushing. Also use one without or lower alcohol content as it tends to make the soft tissues dry out and causes that feeling where your mouth feels parched. Also, don't use it more often than what's recommended on bottle, it can lead to sores because the antibacterial agent can be to hard on the soft tissues.

yes sir theres no reason to brush
As a kid (5-8) I only brushed my teeth a few times a year. It felt so hard for me. I'd have a cavity every dentist visit and I'd lie to them saying I brushed my teeth every other day... Lol. They knew I was lying. Unfortunately I still struggle with brushing my teeth due to depression. It's hard to keep up with hygiene when you can't even get yourself out of bed every morning. I'm trying to go for once every other day to once a day, which is a huge step from where I used to be. well, this is the video to make me brush my teeth finally since the last time around 3 years ago
Broo honestly same. I would only use mouth wash to keep is a lil clean. I’m thinking about brushing daily too.
I have memory problems.
Had em for all my life, I brush once a month and my teeth are fine
Same but my teeth are not fine
There is no better feeling than a clean mouth. I ate and drank alot of sugar meanwhile I skiped brushing my teeth for periods at time, even when I did, I always went up and grabed something to eat. I live in Sweden and I recieved free dental care because of some medications I eat. I went to the dentint and fixed alot of small caverties and so on. From that moment, I floss, mouth wash, sugar free gum after every meal and brush two times a day, 3 seconds per tooth and no sugar but once a week. I have learned to love sparkling water.
Who needs school when you have a place that answers your questions instantly and clearly.
why is teeth the *IMPORTANT* part of our body j mean I agree but yeah I'm brushing my teeth now
i went a whole year without brushing my teeth and still haven't gotten a single cavity
Cap, you don't eat
“I’ve gone 1 whole year 🎉 without brushing my teeth” But you don’t smell yourself? I bet you reek badly. Your gums have swollen but you just ignored it as they “healed” Try 10 years without brushing, lets your results. Reply asap, these pests never reply.
@@aboxoftentacles1395 unfortunately i have brushed my teeth since then. my breath didnt smell that bad and i had no gum or mouth diseases
@@kingskraft72 “my mouth didn’t smell that bad” Yeah from your own perspective. Why would you chew gum if it has mint when toothpaste and mouthwash taste identical? Why not just remove the layer of gunk off your f* teeth so no one has to smell your decaying trashcan breath?
@@blahblahblah747 Oh here we go again. Animals do have falling teeth. LOOK ip Horse and bonobo missing teeth, tribes have putrid black or dark orange teeth. ANIMALS who keep their teeth gnaw on bone or tough fiber like hay to scrape away tartar buildup. OH BY THE WAY, have you smelled a Dog's breath before? They stink like a toilet. SO YES, while some people and animals do keep their teeth until death, it's not all of their teeth by the way. They have constant infections, even gum injury. I think the only exception to this would be large cats, sharks and hyenas who have resilient immune systems that can fight off infections from raw meat and feces.
Thanks now I'm destined to brush my teeth at least 20 times per day
