In this short video excerpt I am sharing, I want it to exemplify Frank's pure love and devotion for his fans and the people he has worked with. With his career spanning nearly half a century, Frank's appreciation for the people that loved and supported him the whole way through his career goes without needing to be said. If Frank was shown love, he'd gladly show you some back. This is what this whole video is all about; a love letter to the fans. Thank you for watching.

I've been listening to She Shot Me Down, the 1981 LP this appears on. Great songs, with Frank's voice in top form but with a smoky edge from all the whiskey and cigarettes -- perfect for that material. I love how he reclaims Thanks for the Memory. The medley that ends the album, "The Gal that Got Away/It Never Entered My Mind," is a heartbreaker.

Wow, what an amazing performance, almost (but not quite) indistinguishable from the magnificent LP studio version. I always thought these lyrics were rewritten with Ava Gardner in mind for Frank. They did "jog" on the Malibu beach, they did attend Broadway performances, they did play roulet in Vegas, she had a pad in London and several other similarities.

In a bootleg recording at Carnegie Hall in 1981, Frank explains how “Thanks For The Memory” is (correctly) one of the greatest torch songs ever written. However, being written for a Bob Hope movie stifled its potential as it became Bob’s theme song. Although he did flub the lyrics here, the arrangement is simple beautiful. The horns and the strings walk you through the good times and the bad, and the beauty of the mundane, even if the lyrics are grandiose. You might’ve never had journeys on a jet, but it definitely feels like it if you’re in love. His performances of this song in concerts with just a piano accompaniment are some of the most poignant renditions you’ll ever hear, as is his studio recording. It’s a shame this song got the life and treatment it did, it’s really a commentary on the beauty and complexity of an ending relationship much like “Send In The Clowns”.
Also, fantastic work on the remixing of the video. You’re a great.

Despite its' association with Hope I believe "Thanks For The Memory" maintained its' beauty as a very touching song. In the movie it originally came from, Hope and Shirley Ross were a divorced couple that re-finds their love and the scene in which they sing this is quite convincing. (Hope was a good actor when he wasn't spitting out one liners.)
Hope understood what Sinatra did about this song and through the years he sang a hundred different versions of it to embrace and thank his audience in a warm and genuine closing to his shows. It may not have been a 'torch song' on those occasions but the same warmth and principles apply.
