      @BogotSR Před 26 dny +28

      Unnecessary worry. The electronic power steering used by BMW is always connected by a rod. It is not shift-by-wire, where there is no rod between the steering wheel and the steering mechanism.
      What Misha experienced was aquaplaning, which manifests similarly to the steering wheel being disconnected from the wheels.
      If the EPS fails, it only makes the steering wheel harder to turn because the motor does not assist in turning the wheels. However, the difference is not so noticeable while driving.
      EPS, like hydraulic power steering, simply facilitates steering. But the steering wheel is always connected to the steering mechanism.
      Shift-by-wire does not involve a connection between the steering wheel and the steering mechanism. However, BMW has never used this type of steering in any of its.

    At 4:40 you can see that the redline starts to slowly drop from 8000 to 1000 rpm. The exact same thing happens at 10:20, just watch the thin red segments that start to descend to 1k. Just before he says drivetrain issue. There is also a yellow zone that starts to appear bellow the rev "needle" on the display in both cases. The older BMWs had LEDs on the rev meter to reduce the redline when the engine was cold, and the redline got higher as the engine temp got closer to optimum. This seems to be the digital version of the same thing, so maybe some sensor failures are causing it to limit the revs to 1000...

    This is a little known fact - BMW uses blinker fluid for steering as well, if the owner uses their indicators too much, it depletes the blinker fluid and steering doesn't work anymore. Therefore it is is not recommended to use blinkers that much in a BMW.

    The steering never "disconnected", considering its literally impossible for it to do so. The M3 has electric power steering, not steer-by-wire. All that means is that the power steering is powered by an electric motor, rathe than a hydraulic pump. That means there is still always a permanent mechanical connection to the front wheels.

    That looks almost like the car has some dynamic ratio power assist running from a system related to the ECU/BCM or other drive-related module, and Misha powering through all the standing water giving it big inputs caused some weird ABS/wheel slip/differential sensor readings, so the module failed itself safe and disabled all the enhancements. Including power steering...
    Seems like a fairly niche edge case given most people wouldn't be hooning round Nords in torrential storm weather, but a very scary failure mode nonetheless 😮 the owner will know not to do that in future! Could be useful info with Norway's conditions.
    Of course, the car might just have lemon electronics and need a loom or module replacing 😅 here's hoping he has some success with BMW. Would be interesting to get a follow-up.

      Considering the shifting issue that happened just before, I'd say it was an electronics fault just messing with everything. Maybe some water tripped something or there was an issue with battery/alternator power. Issues with battery power tend to cause all sorts of random weirdness in cars as it interferes with every component at once.

    • @pranavk8293
      @pranavk8293 Před 25 dny

      @@Matthew-nl9kdThere was no “shifting” issue in the sense that the car just didn’t allow Misha to shift. In this fail-safe mode BMW lowers the redline to 1300RPM and does not allow it to exceed hence no downshifting occurred but when he slowed down he could downshift. I believe the original commenter is correct.
