Very good Mark, this is one you want to save in your favorites to reference later if needed, the one important takeaway is letting the US Embassy know that you are in country along with the many other points made with regard to passports, staying current with immigration and staying low-key as in not drawing unnecessary attention to yourself and remain respectful to their country. All good stuff, thanks again.

Thanks Mark, FYI: I just renewed my Passport in the US. which had expired just before the pandemic, and it took almost 5 months to get the new passport. Also, when you order or renew a passport you can opt for the larger 50 page passport at no extra cost, and for extra cost obtain a passport card, that while valid for travel in limited countries may be of use as ID or in obtaining a replacement passport if you loose your passport book.
Also, it might be worth considering an RF blocking container such as a wallet or Faraday bag or pouch to prevent scanning or tracking of your credit cards, passport boot and cards, and even mobile devices.

I stayed in a hotel up north and it was back to me in three weeks. 130 dollars. I had no problem what so ever. I am currently back home in the US doing repairs. Cannot wait to get out of here ... :)). Best of luck and great channel.

For any American living in the Philippines long-term, get a decent lawyer first before obtaining a local close companion. Keep the lawyer's contact information handy.
If you end up in jail, don't give any statements (it is your right in the Philippines) and contact your lawyer first. Your close companion can wait.
Lastly complex transactions require a lawyer to navigate.

For Americans who extend their tourist visas each month or months at a time, you can renew your passport as early as 9 months prior to expiration. Technically, you must have 6 months' validity left on your passport to extend. Renew early and never have an issue extending. I know 2 people that got denied because they let their passport run down below the minimum, 1 with only 30 days left. They both had to pay a fine after reapplying when they got their passport renewed because their extensions were expired.

Lots of great information. Regarding health insurance, I really don't bother. It's more of a headache than what it's supposedly worth. The best insurance for me is cash and a credit card with as high a limit as you can muster. $20k is enough to cover almost anything serious (use an international card like Citi or Chase, or a Philippine bank credit card). I had a minor surgery that cost under $300 but my wife had to go to the ATM because I did not have enough cash on me (and there was no ATM in the surgical area) and the doctors typically only take cash. Cash talks in Jail situations as well.

And do they have longer -- term tourist VISAS ? Where a person only has to renew their tourist VISA when their U.S. Passport expires ? Seems like a hassle to have to renew every six months. Also, does the Philippines allow a person to be a dual Citizen ? U.S. and Philippines Citizen...

I think you are wrong there Mark. You can ştill renew your passport one months before it expired if you are coming from the Philippines or any other country. Because you are going to the US and you are going to renew your passport there. But if you are coming from the US and going outside the country they will not let you leave the country if your passport will expired in 6 months. That's according to Terry.

More advance-level suggestions for any American living in the Philippines: Make social connections with the locals.
I think the Philippines is one of the easiest places for an American to make connections with the locals. Survey-after-survey, Filipinos have the highest favorable opinion of the United States than any other country. Use that to your advantage. Have your own local connections aside from those that were due to your local close companion. Your companion will give you more respect by demonstrating that you can independently navigate the social landscape yourself.
Philippine society places a lot of value on "who you know" (and we know the problems it causes). You are not going get much from Filipinos if your social circle is mainly fellow foreigners and your close companion.
If you regularly use or anticipate the use of professional services (e.g., doctors, lawyers, accountants) AND you like that person, give them a small gift during Christmas. It doesn't have to be expensive. A gift goes a long way for those folks and you never know what other help they can give you outside their profession.
TL;DR Make social connections with Filipinos, outside those facilitated by your local companion. It is very useful in an emergency and gives you some independence (or options at least aside) from your companion.
