A brilliant reaction, one of my favourite movies, it’s like an abstract painting, it’s not just about the characters in the story, it’s a much bigger story about the universe which is open to interpretation
Ayyy happy to hear!! Someone mentioned in the comments about you guys and your experience with this film. Totally agree!
Both of yall got it so right in how the film carries itself and what Lowrey has shown to us in terms of a much larger idea and concept through one couple and fleeting human lives.
Man, this movie made me feel more lonely than any other I’ve ever watched. That being said, it’s just incredible. I love it but I don’t love what it did to me.
I get that!
This film is very personal to me. It hits me in an emotional place that I just can’t describe. It’s very hard to recommend this movie to others due to how slow and unorthodox it is, but it is a work of art that I will cherish forever… Thank you, David Lowrey
When I watched this one in theatres, I legit couldn't stop crying the whole time once the pie scene started! One of my favs!👻😭
Ate the whole thang!
I get chills every time during the ghosts' first exchange.
"I'm waiting for someone."
"Who?"
"I don't remember."
Even for a film with so little dialogue, the writing is phenomenal. Also, a little fun fact, the other Ghost is played by Ke$ha.
kesha is at the party, not the other ghost. the other ghost is played by the director.
I spent the first twenty minutes not really getting it, but by the end of the movie I was bowled over. I left the theater shaking and in tears. I love this director!
Absolutely one of my favorite movies that most people just don't understand. The idea of love waiting for eternity, nothing is stronger than love.. Not to mention that the monologue the guy gives at the party is honestly one of the most real and powerful truths we all need to hear and recognize. Such a beautiful film.
"If they cut that two seconds before I let out that 'hoo!' I don't think I would have felt that." You have stated the fundamental reason so many much bigger, louder, busier films just pass through us without leaving an impression. They treat shots like mere bits of plot information--content--rather than as emotional beats. Always rushing to "get to the point" until there's no point. Great reaction.
Right on. Happy you took the time to remark on this!
I started watching this when it first came out, got bored, and turned it off. Came back to it about 3 years later and oh man. This is one I could only watch once. It hit me in a different way like Marriage Story did, to where I don’t think I could go through the mix of emotions I felt again.
And to make it clear, this is one of my favourite films ever.
The monologue by the bearded guy in the party scene is an amazing moment in an already amazing film!
I'm so happy you reacted to this! It's the rare film that, if you're patient, can conjure up strange, numinous, indescribable emotions. Almost like Tarkovsky.
I saw this in the theater and it stayed with me. Everyone was profoundly silent when it ended. I love that it's such a thinker.
Great reaction. It's been hard to find people who appreciate this movie. I just love it.
I saw this movie literally 4 days after my dad died and I proceeded to cry my eyes out all night and ended up in an existential depression for 2 or 3 weeks afterwards. The thought of my dad trapped as a ghost for all time hurt my heart beyond repair. I've never had a movie impact me as much as this one did.
One of the most underrated films ever.
The pie scene wrecks me. I know what it feels like to eat in that kind of grief, where you hate the food but are compelled to eat anyway.
If you don't get choked-up while watching A Ghost Story, then you are probably a ghost. Absolutely love your film review/analysis...you love for cinema really shows❤
One of the movies that got me excited about film. It’s hauntingly beautiful and cathartically empty. Im beyond excited you got to watch this one. To me this is Lowery’s best. The soundtrack btw is goated.
The scene when he looks down to the little girl... the time lapse gets me everytime. Fantastic movie, thanks for the reaction.
Awesome to see someone react to this film. This has remained in the back of my mind all these years after first seeing it and each time I revisit it, it gives me a better perspective and feeling about life and mortality
You should really check out "I am the Pretty Thing that lives in the House" (2016), it's another slow ghost story that's built on classic romanticism, like this one. It is hard for a lot of people to watch because it is slow, and quiet, and requires you to pay a lot of attention but it is a truly hauntingly beautiful movie and possibly one of the best films I have seen that embodies the spirit of literary romanticism. If you do, just settle in for a very quiet couple of hours.
This soundtrack is immaculate
I'm glad you watched this. I've recommended it a couple of times, it's both beautiful and sad. It's hard to believe it's by the same guy that made The Green Knight and Pete's Dragon.
Great reaction! Congratulations!!
This is in my top 3 favorite movies
Honestly reminds me of "I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream".

“What if there’s nothing to look for you just have to move on?”
I remember the scene that Rooney Mara eats a pie for 9 minutes was something articles kept bringing up and honestly, it kinda got me interested and I have no idea why.
The same director made _Aint Them Bodies Saints_ with the same two lead actors, Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck. It's excellent too.
When you talked about the history of our own lived space it reminds me of how I feel when I visit castles or historical buildings (UK here). I like to touch walls/bricks/stones and try to imagine who or what went before me! Its a good feeling
Man this movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I loved this movie so much!
Lets goooo- quite possibly my favorite movie ever and it absolutely does not get enough love
Would love a video where you talk about your favorite first time watches over the past few years! either your favs of the movies you've reacted to or just your tops movies of recent years! Just movies that have stuck with you the most
Sounds neat! I’ll do that!
I was very young when I first watched this and I didn’t really understand or cared for it that much. On a second watch many years later I consider it a really beautiful film.
So happy to see you watch this one man :) it has a very strong meaning to myself
One of my favorites! 🙌
I've often thought about how a geographical location has X, Y & Z coordinates, but if you add in time as another coordinate, you get every moment that has ever occurred in the spot where you stand. Now imagine if by some chance you saw one of these moments, it could appear to you as if it it were a ghost.
I hear the screenplay is just 30 pages long. Haven’t read it myself but it makes sense
Holy crap - Super excited to see your thoughts on this. This one hit me but I am not sure its for most people. Bit of a tour de force, especially the pie scene lol. Still I enjoyed it overall... I think the key moment is the guy talking in the kitchen, albeit a little nihilistic and depressing...
Damn... still at work so look forward to watching this later this evening.
With regards to the scene at the party, I like to think or hope my legacy is the ones I loved and who loved me. I hope my school friends "The Lads" will always raise a glass once a year as we pass until we are all gone., I like the quote in Stand Up Guys (2012)
"They say we die twice. Once when the breath leaves our body, and once when the last person we know says our name. "
I think thats all I need for legacy.
And ofcourse when its my time to pass, and the last glimmers of light begin to fade, I hope to hear :
🎵Purple jacket pocket full of weed, Everything that I should ever need... just like my time 🎶
People talk about the pie eating scene: I can't think of a better way to show visceral mourning -- the futility of so much loss in such a short time; her trying to desperately fill the gaping hole in her body with something sweet.
I had to laugh when you spoke about the umber of takes when she was eating pie. In the movie Ice Cold In Alex, the star John Mills had to down a whole beer in on go. They used real beer, and there was over ten takes. He had to sleep it off during that afternoon.
Your bro Shawn from Cinema Rules has probably been waiting for you to do this for so long.
This will be a great watch. Cheers, homie
Hahahaha the legend himself. Great taste in films!
Yeah, I remember Shawn giving this a rare 10/10!
Loved this film. Very introspective, brilliantly acted and directed, a big lump in the throat.
Wow how did I miss this
Thanks, James! 🌫 #JamesVsCinema #DaviLowery #AGhostStory #AGhostStory2017
Second best pie scene in cinema history...
This is why I rock with you!
This movie broke me in a way i dont think any movie ever has lol
This is an awesome movie. Watched it a few years ago.
Love this movie. Devastatingly beautiful. Yes I believe in ghost/spirits
Aye flying lotus listener😌
Shane Caruth (from Primer) helped Lowery out with editing and production. Lowery had just edited Caruth's Upstream Color, which would be a great follow up to this.
The cinematographer for this film, Andrew Droz Palermo, is insanely talented. He and his cousin Tracy Droz directed one of my favorite documentaries ever, Rich Hill in 2014. Highly recommend.
I was hoping you'd react to this one!! My story with this movie is that when I went to watch it, there was just six people more in the room and two went out after the pie scene (also, right after this movie, I entered to watch The Greatest Showman, quite the contrast). In defense of that scene, two months after watching this movie my dad passed away, and I think because of that experience I understand how much that scene is about getting through the process of grief in the everyday life. And yes, I would say this is one of my favorite movies!
p.s. I recommend reading "A Haunted House", the short-story by Virginia Woolf that's quoted at the start!
I believe that was Rooney Mara’s first time ever eating pie
beautiful
I need to finish this movie lol
Got halfway the other year and just never got back to it
How has Locke (2013) not been voted for these location focused polls?
I watched this one a few years ago.
It made me feel sad and a touch lonely.
this shit had me crying like a little girl
Black Swan would be an excellent next film for you to react to, James! You’d have a great time with that one
this was such an amazing movie. i know the long shots are a turn off for a lot of people, but I wish they'd give it a try cause damn does it nail what it's going for.
This movie, The Others, and Haunting of Hill House are my favorite treatments of ghosts.
I had an idea for movie with just one scene: a woman eating a pie. Then this film came out, and ruined my dream.
I’m truly heartbroken to hear that.
Hey yeah the long houseparty hipster rant is pretty darn good. I create, but not to be remembered. Not by name at least. I like the idea of putting out good ripples into the universe. Since I seem to be a creative, I try to exercise it. It's actually quite difficult to utilize one's talents without having some motivation... but worrying about getting my name on a building or something has always seemed so banal when considering the vastness of time.
So I guess it's really a combination of love and... something resembling anger at myself if I don't utilize my potential. But why would I care then if I don't want to be famous? I literalky don't care... but I do love human connection. And what that all kinda suggests to me is the reality of some higher intelligence, call it God or The Universe or whatever... Not some spirit in the sky but the totality of EVERYTHING... I want to interact with experience and not just participate but to contribute.
But a name on a building? Even a great song or film that's made famous... I just don't care about that... I care about the impact what I create has on the people that are able to interact with or consume it. Then they go on and hopefully are changed ever so slightly and maybe the world a better place.
.... Or something!
Amazing movie. ❤
I agree!
How's that for a "location" movie?
Loved this movie, but I was never sure how to recommend it to people.
My biggest fear is death so this movie kinda puts me into a spiral but I also love it. I remember my family watch it with my grandma and when it ended she was like.....I dont get it lmaooo
Same director as The Green Knight
I get those vibes!
man this movie kinda remined me of i didn't mean to haunt you by quadeca it's a amazing album i think you should check it out, you can listen along with the music videos the dude made them into one short kinda movie. idk would be cool
This movie _really_ makes you think.
_Do Ghosts have Roller Discos?_
this movie affected me so badly when i watched it i'm almost scared to watch even this. never watch this after getting out of a 4 year relationship, lol. incredible film. top ten for me

Another ghost title movie - Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai
❤

"Do you create things to be remembered?" Children my man, children.
The universe just wants to be remembered.
Looking forward to this, check out Coherence when you get a chance
Oh yeah! 👌🏽
Imagine believing in ghosts in any of the Americas : P literally every step you take is on a native sacred burial ground : D
I really hated the party monologue scene, it detracted from an otherwise fantastic movie IMO.
I'm terrified of death and this movie just about gave me a panic attack listening to that character talk about how nothing matters lol
I don’t blame you hahaha
Might sound weird but this movie feels kinda like Interstellar if it had a way smaller budget
Totally feel that.
What do you think the note said?
“You forgot to do the dishes.”
Great movie that I never want so sit through again. It's inspiring and thought provoking yet so dull and boring (purposefully I assume)
I definitely didn’t have the attention span to watch this movie and stopped watching right around the time he turned into a ghost. I enjoyed watching you watch it tho!
First comment!
Quick with it g
Weird movie
I tried watching this movie some years ago maybe in 2018, got to the pie-eating part where the director went for a bathroom break and forgot to turn off the camera, watched 5 fuckin minutes of a woman eating pie, turned off the movie and never watched it again and I refuse to do so ever.
marz should have gotten an oscar nomination for that alone
I hated this movie so goddamn much.
I tried to get thru this a few years ago. Just seemed boring and pretentious.
“I don’t see the benefit of not believing in it” is a really weird reason to believe things..
Out of all the things this video touches..you respond to that one..people are so interesting when they’re on the internet, especially on what they choose to comment on..
@@JamesVSCinema In my opinion that was the most thought provoking thing said in the video.. no hate, you just have a very unique way of going through life✌️
