    This film has 2 endings, one being the ghost found the note fulfilling enough that he was able to move on. Or, the ghost found it unfulfilling thus realizing his existence was meaningless as a ghost, which makes him move on.

      In my head canon, she just wrote down his name. It was a very small piece of paper and in many religions people think that after death you move to a place, where you have to remember your life, before you can move on. And that´s what I think reading the note accomplished....

    I always interpreted the "note" thing, that we do not get to see it, as just a private thing. It's not meant for us, it's meant for him. There's something of a privacy side of the camera. We can also see this in Call Me By Your Name, when the camera moves away from the sex scenes, not because it doesn't want to show them, but it's just a private thing to do, not meant for us to see.
    The only scenes I didn't like in this movie were the "future" ones. The monologue of this guy was pretty bland and therefore too long and the skyscraper scene was a dumb critique of modernity without much in it. The rest, I really liked.

    This was my take just after seeing it in 2017. Spoiler alert -----> It was my favorite movie of 2017 :)
    Sundance 2017) 4th film, "A Ghost Story."
    This is why I come to Sundance! This was my most anticipated movie, and it did NOT disappoint! It was the slowest burn of a slow-burn movie I've ever seen, but not once was I bored. I don't understand some key elements, but the director gave me space to ponder and interpret. I could make it my own if I wanted to. Fun note: The aspect ratio was squared! The ghost was trapped in by walls of the movie, just as he was trapped in his own house. Killer music, too! The soundtrack will be a must buy. The passage of time was inventive and jarring. So many different things to think about and enjoy and mention. Love love love love love this movie! Big huge thumbs up!

    One last comment because I loved this movie. The whole monologue about the universe and our legacy, is something I came to on my own after many nights overthinking. I'm sure many others have. Hearing it laid bear in this movie and watching the torture that the ghost inflicts on himself really jarred me to the core. Great film.

    Alot of people tried to find the meaning behind this movie when it first came out, but I believe this is not a movie to be understood but felt. The way the shots linger and don't think is for us to find hidden clues but to get wrapped up in the moment. I specifically love that monolog the guy gives, he's basically saying life is meaningless so enjoy it, instead of being fixed in this ONE goal just enjoy your life.

    I lost my husband of 20 years in January of this year. I’ve never been through anything harder than the last nine months. I’ll be rewatching this movie to help me with some additional closure.
    A few things I’ve learned, love is truly forever, love doesn’t end when you let go, and you don’t move on from someone, you move through the situation.
    My heart is with all of those grieving. The process never ends. ❤️

    Thanks Shaun so much for introducing me to this great film! What a beautiful, sad piece. Man, A24 publishing is everything that is good about cinema; it feels like every project they put out is what art should aspire to. Have either of you seen "Under the Silver Lake"? I think it'd be your kind of thing.

    I think this is the first "Arthouse" film that I fell in love with. The final shot is amazing. I will give it 80/100. My only real problem with the film is that one moment where the guy just kind of spells out the entire theme of the film in one monologue. It almost feels a bit expository and I would have preferred it if they kept the film's meaning upto interpretation.

    • @jeuneguerriere
      @jeuneguerriere Před 2 lety

      That's my least favorite part of the film as well. And as an introvert, I find it the most draining and noisiest scene (a lot of words!!) lol. But after rewatching the film, I've come up with my own interpretation: that that scene is intended to motivate C (the ghost) that he is not just a forgettable dust in this universe. That even after his death, he could still make an impact. But that's just me.

    • @jamk2668
      @jamk2668 Před 2 lety

      A lot of people misread it as the meaning. (I was at a Q&A where the director mentions that this scene *isn't* providing the thesis of the film.)The entire film is essentially an argument against the soft nihilism that he is spouting. This is underlined when it reveals of the ghost at the end of the speech. It's essentially saying that the ripples we create are endless.

      I really loved about 80% of that movie. The beginning was so intriguing and as I was watching the first 30-40 minutes I had a feeling it may be one of my new favorite movies.
      And then the ending happened. And it ruined it for me. I'm trying to think of an ending I hated more and I really can't do it rn. For such an amazing premise it just went in such a disappointing direction. At least for me. And I'm not against endings like that. Some of my favorite horror movies have similar endings. It just felt like such a missed opportunity.
