Making a Microbudget Masterpiece | A Ghost Story

  • A Ghost Story, directed by David Lowery, was made on a measly budget of only $100k. He obviously had to call in a bunch of favors to get it made, but it became the biggest microbudget film of that year. It's kind of amazing that a movie that small could play in cinemas worldwide.
    I hope that you all learn some filmmaking lessons from this video, or, at the very least, you find it entertaining and informative.
    The Kino Corner will return.
    Disclaimer: I do not own the rights to a lot of the video content in here, but I am using it to educate and my commentary is transformational. I am using a minority of the original work and this video does not replace the movie in the marketplace.
    In fact, I want everyone to go watch this movie! You can get it on DVD or Blu-ray everywhere and I believe it's on some streaming platforms.

    Such a interesting, saddest and realistic ghost movie i ever seen, the cinematography itself and the music and the philosophy in this so interesting and based on reality. Nothing last forever nothing really matter sadly

    Such a beautiful film, a prime example of how even with such a low budget true cinema can be delivered to the screen.

    A divisive masterpiece not for everyone's tastes!! But to me it was an insightful yet depressing experience about the passing of time, grief and search for closure!!

    This film rocked me emotionally. The stirring of suppressed existential dread kept me hooked all the way through. Even through the frustrating and out-of-place party scene, where it feels like the movie is beating you in the face with exposition, I stayed put.

    Great video, man! It’s fascinating to see more videos about this film are being made today, and all of them are warranted. Some may think it’s a wonderful piece of art, and others have called it trash. I just finished my third viewing of “A Ghost Story” and went back and listened to the audio commentary of the film. To be honest, I’ve never been so obsessed with an artistic film in my life, and I never had imagine that I would. I used to see films from the Coen brothers and anything that was from A24 as pretentious and confusing, but ever since I saw “The Revenant”, my view of film has shifted. If I saw “A Ghost Story” before then, I would’ve called it the dumbest movie ever made. But now, that’s not the case. It’s actually one of my favorite films of all-time.

    Going into it blind was probably a good thing for me. As I had no idea that the guy in the bedsheets on the cover was literally the image of the ghost throughout the film. So when I saw it. I went through a journey of first bafflement and giggling at the idea of this being played so straight, then acceptance, and finally I was simply into it. The subtle tightrope walking of a concept that could get so silly so easily.
    But then again. One of my favourite directors right now is Quentin Dupieux. One of the posterchilds of weird and surreal for the sake of being weird and surreal.

    I wasn't a huge fan of "A Ghost Story" the premise was pretty cool however i found it to be a bit cliche and predictable. I also feel like the way the film showed emotion was a little odd, like i understood what they were going for with the pie eating scene, but it didn't need to be 4 minuets long, i felt like it tried to hard in a way like "look shes sad shes eating cake and the camera is locked off, shes sad do you get it" i thought it was shot really well and the soundtrack and acting was great, i just personally couldn't really get that invested in it.

      IMO it's more of a way to subtly show you how the ghost perceives time. After this scene things become less real time and chronological. It shows her grief and helps you understand the ghost more, it's a great scene IMO.

  • @pointynoodle
    @pointynoodle Před 2 lety

    I don't know, I really found this movie a self-interested drag. The pie scene felt less like "wow, this is impressive!" and more like "huh, they really want me to be impressed." The family scenes were cool though.

      The director played as the other ghost. She was billed as the "Spirit Girl" at the party, which I think caused some confusion.

    I love reading hate comments for this movie, because they are always self-disclosing anti-art snobs who prefer the banality of marvel movies and easily to digest Kuleshov effect puzzle boxes rather than films that force the watcher to engage on their own with the film.
