Have a great day!
you should react to "the void" lovecraft horror movie
I hope Climax is on that poll
Antonioni movie’s
This is Gaspar Noé's best film by far, and an actual 21st century masterpiece. If you want to see something equally great and quite similar in shape and style, I recommend Russian Ark, by Aleksandr Sokúrov.
I'm on the fence with Enter The Void. I like how tripped out it is, it has such a surreal presentation combined with the untamed content makes it more tripped out. I like how it has a surreal side to the story, the whole volatile merge of past and present after he (Oscar) dies is certainly wild, but it's only a single side to the story. The rest of it is (sort of) depressing. I would've preferred it if it had a considerably more inventive story premise and writing. For example, Total Recall (1990) also dealt with DMT in a way and a premise similar to that one has far more interesting and fun, subversive potential than Enter The Void. There was a little bit of philosophy in Enter The Void, but it just seemed solely misanthropic and that's it. Like, "Humanity is causing and dealing with all this cruelty and corruption and they'll all repeat it over and over again through reincarnation in a perpetual living hell." Well...hm. Not that imaginative a story in the long run and not that informative on its philosophy either. At the end of the day, maaaaybe it's capitalism and there never will be anything actually underground released in film (because money) or maybe because in hypothetical, even when there is an outlet for underground cinema it's still produced by the same individual person that's equally media addicted as the latter and so he projects the rest of societies world instead of his own. Who knows? I'm not a prude, I don't mind the violent/sexual nudity themes, just feel like the premise, story and writing direction could be better.
Fun fact: Gaspar Noé (The Director) initially asked the Daft Punk member Thomas Bangalter, who had composed the music for his previous movie Irréversible, to create an original soundtrack for Enter the Void. Bangalter was occupied with work on Tron: Legacy and had to decline. As a compromise, he provided Noé with an arrangement of ambient sounds and samples from existing experimental music, from which Noé compiled what he envisioned as "a maelstrom of sounds." Bangalter is billed in the credits as sound effects director, and the film features his track "Désaccords" originally composed for Irréversible.
Thank you! Very cool
His song Rectum off irreversible is incredible
@@siobhan5486 " rectum " is greatly inspired by the track " Gesamtkunswerk " from Doppelreffekt.

People really don't understand that Kanye and ASAP Rocky both got their influence for there videos "All of the lights" and "L$D" from this movie. This movie is so underrated and a classic in my book
Also in Ab-soul's penile gland video he recreates the scene where oscar is smoking dmt in the beginning of the movie
Dont forget that Kanye directed the L$D vid
@@falsenostalgia1628"pineal" gland. 🙄
@nunisthathigh4825 Yes, pineal, im sorry dont hurt me
This is from IMDB about the director's other film 'Irreversible (2002)':
The first thirty minutes of the film has a background sound with a low frequency of 27 Hz which is almost infrasonic (this sounds like a rumble/vibration), similar types of noises are at times used by police to stop riots. According to Gaspar himself, this could only be heard in theaters (which usually have huge sound systems/subwoofers) and not from headphones or regular home theaters. In humans, this noise causes nausea, sickness, and vertigo. It was one of the reasons people walked out of screenings during the first part of the film. In fact, it was added by Thomas Bangalter (from the electronic music group Daft Punk) to get this reaction.
That's insane 😂. I wish I could've seen the movie in theaters but I didn't see it till it was free on Tubi like a few years ago 😂.
I'd definitely check out Climax (2018) by Noe, too. 😁
Also, another insane film I'd recommend, if you haven't already seen it, is a 1977 Japanese film called "House." It's definitely the most insane movie I've ever seen, and to think a kid co-directed the film makes sense and adds to the insanity. Lol.
I would love if he watched House 😭 maybe one day we will get it
Noe’s entire filmography tbh is worth checking out
Irreversible was the first Noe film I saw. The brutality he shows is pretty crazy.
Irreversible's exploitative and voyeuristic approach always hit harder and deeper than anything the torture p0rn genre ever came up with. I feel like many movies tried to "top" it, but almost every time they end up being unintentional parodies of themselves.
Yeah, as rough as that scene is I still think it's a must- watch.
@@VAVORiAL but it's the exact opposite of pornography, which is what makes Irreversible so heart-breaking and affecting. The camera is unmoving and pinned to the ground with Alex, we associate ourselves with her, not with the assailant. The slightest bit of motion or a cut to a different angle and there would be motion in the scene, it would be exciting. The whole narrative structure is the same, by telling the story backwards, the film is the opposite of pornography, there is no build-up followed by climax. If it had been played in chronological order, we would feel feelings of satisfaction and catharsis at the point where Marcus violently attacks a man with a fire extinguisher, which is all wrong I think.
Noe has an incredible filmography. Worth the deep dive, especially Irreversible and Climax but they're not for the faint of heart! So happy to see a filmmaker exposing themselves to really experimental cinema.
By far the most visceral, most "real" feeling drug scene i've seen in a movie - and one of the most spiritual movies also. Ofc the other-worldly cinematography and direction play part in that. Just a fantastic film. Not sure if watching it on shrooms would be the best experience ever or the worst...
Check out a film called "Blueberry" AKA Renegade. You can probably find the trip scene here on YT but its not the best quality, it's the best depiction of being on a trip that I've seen IMO. The director of the film had participated in over 100 ayahuasca ceremonies so he knew a thing or two about how the visuals should really be.
From experience, it’s both. “Best” because you literally become Oscar. So you aren’t watching the movie, you’re living it. “Worst” because you aren’t just watching it, you’re living it lol. Therefore you feel his pain. You see his loved ones suffering. And the shrooms just make it all feel so much more REAL. I really hate those car crash scenes though.. get me every time 😂
More reactors need to react to this and more Gaspar Noé films! Thank you James
There are good movies that youtube would shit their pants about.Doberman,Irreversible,Serbian film,Ichi the killer heavy stuff.
Dude this movie is wild, the auditory breathing and muttering made this a crazy watch for my friend when he was under the influence while watching, this is probably the most cerebral movie I've ever watched its almost like you're experiencing what the character in the film is experiencing.
You sound like the kind of warlock who would want to find a movie called The Holy Mountain - you may require “medication” during or after
This was my first Noé film, and I think I was like 16 when I first saw it. What a trip.
"You entered the wrong void bruh" HAHAHAHA
Gaspar Noe is fearless! If you want a more brutal experience, watch “Irreversible.” But if you want something more “fun” watch “Climax.”
I remember years ago catching this on Netflix.... my mind was blown. Forever changed. Similar to seeing something like The Matrix for the first time.... I had never seen anything close to this ever before, and I was thinking about this movie long after you was over. I think it’s a masterpiece. Shows that at the end of the day films are meant to be art.
My mind is blown that this was actually on Netflix at some point 😳
Never clicked so fast, so excited to see you react to this. I watched it in an Oculus once and it was mind-blowing.
Brutal!
Broo you wild
I've never seen the film, but I watch the opening title credits all the time, one of the best (I love Climax, will soon watch this!)
THANK YOU for reacting to this, in my top 10 films and fave directors, very love or hate but excited for you to see
editing as i go along, 2001 a space odyssey is one of gaspars fave films!
Youre my favorite reaction channel by far, because you havent seen a lot of these weird artsy films but you also clearly have a deep appreciation for the art of filmmaking, and you always have a ton of thoughful input that really adds to my experience of some of the stuff you watch, keep it up
I love Gaspar Noe, but it's so rare to see reactions to them and not easy to recommend! His movies are incredible experiences.
So happy to see this here, recommended it to you when you just started, love this flick!
Wow, can't believe a reaction channel got to this movie. It's a heavy ride. Nice job taking it on.
Omg! I saw this a long time ago by accident and was immediately drawn in. This ought to be a good reaction for you. Love your stuff.
Dude this was cool seeing you discover gaspar. gotta see the other shit.
what the fuck I literally had a thought about "What if James reacted to a Gaspar Noé film" and you chose the absolute goat.
Woo!!
So pleased to see you reacting to stuff all across the cinematic page. It's really one of the things I love about the channel.
As for Enter the Void its a favourite of mine although like a lot of his Movies I feel overwhelmed by it at times. It's intensely, almost suffocating in the way it imposes itself and its really quite visceral experience on you. Not much like it even if its not exactly something I will watch again and again.
Personally I worry that if I did watch it repeatedly it might lose some of that impact.
This man is a content machine
He is!! But these 1 episode a week , Breaking bad uploads have me fiending 💀💀
@@athi6985 He's hopefully gonna finish BCS by the time you're sending your kids to college.
@@MamadNobari 😂😂😂 that looks like that’s where it’s heading , would not be surprised
Oh wow, I suggested this on one of your videos absolutely ages ago. Never thought you'd actually watch it, it's a hell of an experience.
I remember hearing an interview once with Quentin Tarantino where he said that “Enter the Void” has his favorite opening credit sequence ever.
I enjoyed this SO much and immediately want to watch all your other commentaries on basically anything. This movie was a perfect video to click on for your reaction haha.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Its great to go through the film with someone like you basically watching it with me for a change because watching this movie alone especially if you smoke weed or take LSD is ... Traumatizing....
The first time i watched this i literally texted my mom right after just to tell her i loved her. This movie just makes you think heavily about existence and what it means to really be alive. Its also just super realistic. They really did something magical with this film.
This is one of those "master pieces you can only see once"
yup, watched it once and never again
I knew you would appreciate this. Although I don't share its view on death it is one overwhelming, truly mesmerizing experience. And a legendary title sequence that basically uses all the fonts to boot!
One of my top 5 favorite movies ever. I've never seen anything like it and unfortunately it isnt that well known. I was so glad to see you reacting to this.
Quite suprised to see this Movie in a reaction video!!! Its amazing and a life changing experience.
A truly gut wrenching movie is IRREVERSIBLE! Another Noé film.
I need a irreversible movie reaction like oxygen bruh
That film Enter The Void does scare me quite a lot since it deals with Death, Reincarnation based on the Tabbet Book of the Dead, and lots of Disturbing stuff. It's still a mind-blowing film, but damm is heavy.
Seen this so many times, the cinematography is amazing
FINALLY! I think this was on a poll a year or two ago and it just barely got beat out. One of the most insane films I've ever seen. First time watching I got super stoned with a buddy and turned this on randomly while scrolling netflix. I remember that intro fucked us up lmao. If only we knew the trip we'd get catapulted into! 🤘
This movie opened my brain like a good trip do. Those friggen transitions flying across the city are absolutely legendary.
So happy to see u watching Enter The Void, one of my all-time favs by one of my all-time fav directors, and it’s pretty clearly his magnum opus. U might want to give his other stuff a shot, personal favs r I Stand Alone and Irréversible, but Climax and Vortex r great too. Just happy to see Noe getting some love, much respect.
I’m so happy 😭 this movie is on another level. Can’t wait to watch :)
Absolutely one of my favorite films, but I already kind of forgot it exists. I went to see it twice in theaters, and would have gone third, but it did so bad in there that they pulled it off before I got to see it again. Every screening only had a handful of people, and several people walked out, too.
Hey James, Love when you get into more of the art house / obscure films. Would love to see your thoughts on Lars Von Trier film Dogville for its minimalistic aspect.
In many ways, a simple melodrama, just delivered in a way you won’t believe until you see it
They’re crane shots with the smallest 16mm camera available, did the same thing with Irreversible, which I should warn you is the MOST brutal watch. More than this and Come and See
Highly recommend Climax! It’s Gapsar Noe’s best film yet!
I connected with "Seul contre tous" the most.
Vortex is also up there, but I would say Climax is probably his most accessible and the one I would recommend to anyone who has not seen a Noe before.
@@tornoutlaw Strangely I "love" his first 3 long films - but nothing after that.
Definitely Climax!
@@VAVORiAL that's so strange, I really thought, Climax was extreamly boring. Still, Irreversible is my favorite, I Stand Alone and Into the Void on 2nd place. Haven't watched Vortex, yet.
As your are talking about cinematography you should check out All quiet on the western front (not the new remake) for a movie that was shot in 1930 the cinematography is fantastic for a movie that was shot way back then, the acting isn't incredible as it was the 30's but its such an incredible film.
Absolutely love your content and take on movies, I'm almost 40 and you have made me watch movies in such a different way so I thank you for that.
So cool that you did this movie. Gaspar Noe's techniques are amazing and so hard to grasp as a filmmaker. It's very inspiring and a little intimidating. I love his commitment to the style and technique throughout the film. It's uncompromising. Same with Irréversible. Total commitment. It's influenced so many other films. Watch Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning sometime. It's the best of the series and unapologetically borrows from Into the Void (as well as, Blade Runner, Apocalypse Now and others). Noe keeps his stories and plots incredibly simple so he can just paint with his visuals. I love it.
wow I love this movie... I can't believe you're doing a reaction of it. People usually don't know about this film.
I watched this movie with my buddy when it came out. solid movie and we still talk about it randomly
wow! im surprised to see a reaction to this movie! lets goo!
Thanks for covering Gaspar Noe's work at last. Seul contre tous and Climax are real good and special too!!! Now can we get some Michael haneke ??
Ouuuuu this an ultra rare reaction right here!!
BUF, who did the VFX, also contributed to Twin Peaks season 3 on episode 8. Well worth a look at that well received episode.
i was waiting this moment all my life
You definitely need to check out a scanner darkly and waking life, I think you would like it’s style.
Hi James, one film which I think would be fantastic for you to react to is George Sluizer's "The Vanishing" 1988. It's a thriller masterpiece with an unforgettable ending. The film is best to watch without knowing anything going into it.
This taught me dmt exists and that’s all I watched it for at first, the trippy visuals and drugs. After watching it, I began researching the Tibetan book of the dead and the bardo thodal and it legit changed my life
When I first watched this film; it had me so enthralled. It was hitting on a lot emotions. most of them were close to melancholy, I think the ending was hopeful.
noe's climax is my favourite of his, and one of my favourite movies period
This film actually caused seizure in epileptics not because of the intro but because every blink is a cut to make the realism of seeing the film from a the main characters perspective
I'm so glad you got to experience this. My 2nd favorite film between Blade Runner 2049 and Redline.
by far noe’s grandest statement. many of his films feel glacial and otherworldly in its style & presentation, but this one is in a league of its own where that’s concerned
the first time I seen this I couldn’t get thru the first minute and a half. second time I watched it while smoking and it dawned on me that this was unlike any other movie I’ve ever saw.
one thing I did take notice is, listen to the conversation he’s having with his friend Bruno on the way to the drug deal. he mentions how he’s reading a book about out of body experiences after you die, which Oscar ends up having. traveling not only thru the city but thru time to points in his life he could not forget.
irriversible next
Such over the top audacity to make such a film. True arthouse cinema.
Gaspar Noe and BUF's magic!
I think the budget was around 20 millions euros.
About the camera, Noe used Super16mm cameras on irreversible and on this one too, because of the weight of it. Oh and they didn't use any drone on this, it wasn't really a thing back then as you said, i think they used some kind of crane on a dolly for the aerial shots.
You did it!
I remember when I first watched this movie with my mom lol
Some of this film was shot using cranes apparently. It's incredibly hard to find any behind the scenes footage or information of this film unfortunately, but the neon city where the Love hotel is closer to the end was made with a miniature set instead of CGI
Fantastic to watch your journey into increasingly serious cinema. Gaspar Noe's films are almost always controversial and unusual. I think the time has come for highbrow cinema. I think you already have the right arsenal of tools to deal with them. Films by Lars Von Trier (Breaking the Waves, Idioterne, Dancer in the Dark, Melancholia), Michael Haneke (Benny's Video, Funny Games, La pianiste, Caché), Kieslowski (Trois couleurs trilogy, Blind Chance, La double vie de Véronique, Camera Buff), Werner Herzog (Scream of Stone, Aguirre, The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser), Zulawski (Possession), Antonioni (Blow-Up, The Passenger, La Notte), Bunuel (Viridiana, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, Belle de jour), Polanski (Knife in the Water, Repulsion, The Tenant, Bitter Moon). The best is ahead of you :-)
At around 25 minutes in as you're talking about whether it may be miniatures... I would definitely agree. Watch the slide down from the buildings to the cars. You can see that the cars are fake. Very well done though
OH WOW! I'm glad I double-checked before watching. The intro just didn't seem familiar. ..... I've not yet seen this myself. LOL ... I was thinking of Beyond the Black Rainbow for some reason.
I could give a super extensive and elaborate essay on why this movie is one of the best I've ever seen. Still, because I think the good thing if brief twice good, I can only say that this movie is
TERRIFYING
I’d love to read that essay honestly. Not enough people have made extensive enough reviews on this film it’s kind of one of a kind and I’m really curious what others see in it that I don’t!
I watched this movie this morning but half only and I feel asleep. I experienced Astral Travel after that. I fly and meet some Chinese teenager lady and I try to greet them, some won't recognized me but there are 2 ladies recognized me as they told me they are already dead so they see me. They have a smile in their face when I approach them.
And then I fly again going up to different trees and some I end up in 2 different houses and the owner is asleep. I try to touch the figurine display to be aware if I am dreaming or actually experienced this Astral travel. But I do feel the figurine display.
I woke up smiling and being so happy and satisfied.
I would strongly recommend The Holy Mountain (1973) by Alejandro Jodorowski if you want to watch another film with amazing visuals.
Gaspar is one of those filmmakers that I appreciate due to his unique and creative style but I absolutely cannot watch a single one of his films all the way through on account of how messed up they are and/or how messed up they get me.
I watched this one recently and wasn’t a huge fan, but I’m excited to see more from the director
Fantastic thank you for this! Cant wait to see the full one on patreon
PLEASE DO GASPAR NOE'S CLIMAX NEXT!!! one of my favorites of his!
This was Noe's peak and one of the best films from the last 20 years.
I appreciate that you do films that are at least a little bit more "out there" and not just popular Hollywood releases. Even though i did not like this film and am no fan of Noe.
His latest "vortex" was pretty good. Also the last segment of "climax" is super intense - the best he has done imho.
Love this movie.. Especially w/ magical psychedelics (when I first saw it w shrooms, I BECAME the main character.. talk about trippy! Although it’s not a movie I’d recommend for everyone, for those that can stomach it, it’s truly a unique and must see film. Highly highly underrated and just an overall crazy experience. I wish more films were made like this!
I never would have expected you to watch this one
Enter The Void is my favorite Gaspar Noe film. I Stand Alone and Irreversible are super dark and depressing. Not necessarily recommended., unless you're in a mentality where you can take it. Climax is dance party from hell. It's awesome.
Glad you seemed to enjoy this film. I thought it was a shame it didn't do better or get higher appreciation.
It does make you want to try DMT, but, also, to not get shot dead in a toilet and regret almost everything whilst floating through an interpretation of The Book Of The Dead.
It's a lot more geometric for real but a pretty interesting approximation of the spirit molecule.
wasnt expecting this at all but its extremely welcomed, a short after i watched this movie i went and tried dmt
He has a very nice sounding voice
Now You Are Officially The Goat Of Moive Reaction Content
I Freaking Love Gasper Noe Movies.
This movie is wild!
You are the sort of guy who should watch The Holy Mountain… You are happy to learn things from the crazy choices and don’t dismiss them
Irreversible by Gaspar Noe is the toughest film I've ever watched and also one of the most brilliant. Would highly recommend, even without a reaction to it because it might be too much to react to. But it hits like a truck, and definitely is not just about shock value. Unbelievable mesh of sight and sound, with a truly deranged genius behind the camera. I found the cinematography for that film to somehow be even more effective than this one, although obviously Enter the Void is nothing short of revolutionary cinematography wise.
As to how they filmed this... A METRIC SHIT TON of cgi. Lots of real sets that then got motion tracked, digitally recreated and overlayed onto the real set and camera moves that would start and end for real within the set but that digital camera moves would bookend and extend out into the digital sets. Helicopter shots over the city and they'd map every building so they could re-texture and extend them as needed for the state of the "soul" I guess. It's why you can't ever really latch on to what's real and not because it is continually shifting through every single shot. This is real, this is digital extension, this is a real camera in a digital set, this is digital camera in a real set, etc. Had to have been a monumental nightmare to keep track of all the shots through the pipeline.
Another cool one they did is the rotating overhead shots... literally just a guy holding a long stick with a downward facing camera walking through these "areas." And every time you come over a wall or barrier of some kind it's a matched wipe cut that follows the path of the wall into the next shot.
Love you videos! I'd recommend more Gaspar Noe but... not everyone can handle Irreversible
YESSSSS
Yo, first time? I'm a huge Gaspar Noe fan. This will be good. You may also wanna check out Climax or - only if you are ready for it; Irreversible.
BEEN WAITIN FOR THIS! check out Gaspar Noés other work like Ireversible (2002) and climax (2018) as well :)
