Enter the Void is a psychedelic trip all from the perspective of Oscar who is murdered and wanders Tokyo looking for the answer of reincarnation. Gaspar Noe present an amazing and unique journey of the spirit.

Adding my 2 cents on this movie just bc I feel it deserves it..
First, in my opinion, you need to be under the influence of.. something.. in order to FULLY appreciate this movie. First time I saw it, by the time Oscar got shot, I wasn’t just watching the movie.. it felt like I WAS Oscar. I felt the pain, sadness, confusion SO much more than I’m sure I would have sober. Also, whenever he would look in the mirror.. Yikes. Talk about an identity crisis. Wait, who am I again? Oh that’s right, I’m Oscar and I live in Tokyo, and I’m not a drug addict.
The rest of the movie does get a little..lost? In the sense that there is no clear direction of where the movie is going. You just see whatever is put in front of you, which after his death is mostly his friends/sister dealing with the aftermath of his dead. Mix in some flashbacks and jump scare flashbacks of the car accident, and it’s enough to keep you on your toes throughout the movie in my opinion.
While somewhat “lost” watching others, to me, the point is to see how our decisions can impact the lives of others we love after we pass. Most of us only think about our own lives, our own pain/struggles, our own opinions of others.. And through this movie it helps you realize that everyone is dealing with their own messed up lives behind closed doors. Which to some may be depressing, but to me, just made me appreciate being alive and feel empathy for others who are fighting their own battles.
Lastly, idc what that director says, the ending was him being reincarnated. Maybe the director doesn’t believe in that being real, which is why he chose a different explanation for it, but just from viewing the movie I’d say that’s booty juice. The movie stressed that Oscar promised to never leave his sister, and through this reincarnation, he’s keeping his promise. And in a really weird way, that’s a much happier ending than “his final ‘death trip’ ended and he took his last breath.”
But anyways, enjoyed your review and hope my 2 cents can maybe shed a different (non-sober) perspective on what is such a unique “experience” for sure. If you haven’t already, I’d recommend checking out:

I'm surprised to hear that explanation of the ending from Gaspar. I agree, the beginning puts everything into place about what death is like as Alex tells the process according to the book. Seems obvious that he was reincarnated, and that's what I'm going with, as well. Keeping his pact to his sister. The mother, while blurry, at the end still has red hair like she does.
Besides, if the entire movie after he gets shot is just in his head during his last moments, then everything about his sister burning his stash, falling apart from his death, getting with his friend, etc. is completely meaningless. The first thing he thinks of while dying on a bathroom floor is his sister getting railed by her boyfriend in a strip club? Nah.

I knew it would be a chore to get through this. I felt bad. But I think you know why I had to Recommend it as your review was spot on. As always. I’ve watched it about 20 times and I always fall asleep at some point but I like to sleep to it. I appreciate your input once again. Keep on keeping on.

Very easy to fall asleep to the movie, after I calm down from the anxiety of watching myself get shot and die. Again, thank you for the huge support

The reason the director said it wasn't about reincarnation was because everything the main character was seeing was him trying to make sense of his life in his final breath. THe Book of the Dead was were he got the idea of reincarnation. He also suffers from trauma which manifest in his final trip as the repeating car crash scene. The DMT being released in his death was interweaved was his final thoughts, hence the trippy transition scenes.

There were many parts of this film that reminded me of being in one of those ice cream parlours that have that nauseating kiddy~colour saturation LED lighting!

@@CalebWatchesMovies When push comes to shove, as mind-blowing level tripped out and freaky a movie it is, the plotline doesn't have that much imagination to it in the grand scheme of things. It's basically yet another depressing movie, another tragedy film. Only worse 'cause it's saying that you repeat the tragedy of human reality over and over through reincarnation in a perpetual living hell. I'm not prude, I don't mind the sexual shock value, but I'd prefer the movie to have enough innovation to back it up. Which it doesn't. It's meh in the long run.
