I think a throughline you can see in the Daniels’ work is “just because something is weird or embarrassing or silly, doesn’t mean it can’t also be the magical thing that brings us together”.

What I like most is that Dan is taking the roles he wants to do. This film is a great example that when you make a movie where you’re invested in the script, the story, it just becomes something truly magical.

My friend and I went to watch this film in theaters when I was very depressed and I don't know why this movie made me so emotional and happy. I left the theaters with a new found joy and felt relieved for a long time until I felt like my normal self.
I guess I just needed that kind of message at that moment.

Absolutely love this film. It’s all about accepting yourself. Paul Dano’s character felt like an outcast and hated himself because of it. ‘Man’ny, a corpse that (probably) isn’t actually alive outside of his mind, is the tool that he uses to learn to love and accept himself.
What I love most about this film is how the directors turn conventional film tropes on their head. They take things like fart jokes, a-cappella music, and montages- things the directing team have said they hate-and use them to ingeniously drive home the theme of loving the parts of ourselves we've been taught to despise. It's a refreshing and utterly original take on self-discovery that left me feeling damn good by the end.

Well, I'm not an English speaker and I'm too tired and a little drunk right now to try to express my thoughts in English without the help of a translator. so all this text was translated on Google, so don’t judge too harshly.
I wanted to say that this is my favorite film. I definitely watched it more than 20 times (by my standards, that’s a lot). I understand this film this way: there is no corpse, forest and bear, but there is a person who has lost himself in this world, who suffers from loneliness. A friend of mine once told me: “The person you want to be most is yourself.” This is a film about how a man found himself. We are often afraid that we will be considered "weird" if we show ourselves to people as we are, but this film says that there is nothing wrong with being strange. Be yourself and people will love you. and the moment when the cork popped up symbolizes the moment that Hank accepted himself as he is.
would speculate further, but I really want to sleep.
oh, and one more thing. The soundtrack is simply divine! and, if you listen to it for a long time, you can notice the “evolution” of the music. at first there is only rhythmic singing, then the most primitive instruments are added - drums. and only at the end does a piano appear, and a guitar appears in the credits.

Slightly edited version of my comment from patreon on it in case this interpretation means anything to anyone else
This movie is wonderful, I watched it for the first time very shortly before watching your reaction and it's kind of a wonderful queer romance. It came out in january 2016, shortly after the US's legalization of gay marriage, and a lot of happiness that Hank gets throughout this film comes from Manny first calling him beautiful, to the kiss underwater and eventually realizing that Sarah isn't the person he's in love with, he was just infatuated by her happiness - which he finds worthless in comparison to what he feels with Manny. It uses mortality and I find it uses Manny to add to the ridiculousness of the narrative obviously since they enjoy the surreal, but also because many queer people throughout history died before they were able to find their own happiness. It's tragic. And Hank doesn't get to have a future with Manny, but he does get to say goodbye. Manny doesn't just get taken away to an unmarked grave, unloved and unknown, he's sent out with a final goodbye from someone who loves him.

They didn't come from anywhere, he was there the whole time.
He was mentally ill and fixated on the woman whose woods he was hiding out in. He found a body and in his mental illness created a friend and worked out some of his issues and went back to civilization but at the very end 'sanity' wasn't for him and he decided the mental illness was better.
If you rewatched it you would see that everything around him came from the pictures on the woman's social network site.
Manny never lived and he never left the vicinity of that woman's home.
And the father wasn't nodding at the body. Hank envisioned in his mental illness the reactions of the people around him. He wanted his father's approval and that's what he saw in his mind.
That's why I think it's so sad. He tried to fight his mental illness but it just wasn't worth it. His mental illness gave him everything he wanted and reality gave him nothing.

    • @laveyanist
      @laveyanist Před rokem +3

That's certainly one way of viewing the ending. I like taking the absurdity in stride and that a lot of it happened, to a degree at least. He found love in Manny, and it allowed him to learn he never really loved Sarah, and like he said only thought she looked happy. Once he was about to lose Manny it was clear how much Manny meant to him, and didn't want to leave him. He accepted it though, getting to say goodbye before he left off into the sea.
It came out at an important time in US queer history, gay marriage had just been legalized in 2015 and this released january 2016. Many queer people in US history died before finding happiness, just like Manny. From the subtle happiness Hank got when Manny called him beautiful all the way to their underwater kiss and even the music during one of the montages straight up asking "I have to admit, I'm enjoying your company - Are we falling in love?"
