@@AloisSachothead of a gremium of 7 equals... we don't have a president and seeing the current world, it would be better to have 7 heads of states and multiple political parties leading ALL countries...
@@headstanding_Penguin even he has no more power than the other 7, a president is elected and changes each year to facilitate collaboration with the other states. I wanted to say by my comment the incredible fact that we can cross a person like this.

When you come to Europe, take trains everywhere! There is a ticket for tourists, called "Eurail Pass", that allows you to take every train in every country as often as you desire. The ticket price depends only on how long you wanna use it, for example a week or several months.
I took the trains in Switzerland and it was awesome, I already talked about an embarrassing moment I had waiting a minute or so for the train door to open, when I just needed to press a button next to the door.
The Swiss were always so helpful, my friend and I were confused about which train to get, and this guy approached us and asked where we were going, he then opened that app they showed on the video and said, you are on the correct platform, but you will need to get the second train that will arrive on this track.
It was an awesome experience, I bought the tickets on every day I needed to catch a train, but I was asked for the ticket once.
They always check the tickets on Intercity trains and even longer distance trains that go abroad. On regional connections i get my ticket checked like twice a year

What differentiates buying train tickets in switzerland from buing plane tickets is that there isn't a mandatory seat reservation system in place, so the train you wanna catch can't really be booked out. You can buy your ticket at any time before departure you like (they can be bought online, at ticket machines at the respective station or at customer service centrals which most mid to large sized train stations have) and don't have to worry about availability at all. There is also a yearly subscription service which which you don't have to pay for tickets at all, that's gonna set you back like 2-3k a year though.
Swiss trains are not just the best in Europe but also the best in the world!
The 8 minutes is not for the next train in case you missed it. It if for your connecting train, when you exit one train and wait for the next train to continue your trip. And often the trains will be delayed in case one connection is late, just to ensure people will still make the connections and don't need to wait for the next train. That is how good the system works.
Hello from Switzerland, well, I can only confirm that I'm very satisfied with public transport, I sold my car years ago because it just wasn't worth it, the costs, the trouble and the stress. I can save all that with the public hustle and bustle, ok, it's not cheap either, but if you add it up correctly, a car is definitely more expensive.
The SBB app not only includes its own connections, but all companies belonging to the system, i.a. also ships or other private railways. This also includes the ticket, which means that even if you are traveling with different companies, you have one ticket for everything.
You can't adapt the whole problem with public transport to all countries, the USA and Canada in particular have enormous distances, which probably makes the airplane more sensible for longer distances, but for us in Switzerland this system suits perfectly and it also covers the smallest ones localities.
Punctuality is one of those things... if you're 30 seconds late, you'll see the train from behind. A delay of more than 5-8 minutes (except for trains from abroad) almost means a crisis here. The people have invested a lot in the railways (tax money) and also expect a corresponding service from the railways, which is probably quite legitimate.
I would more than recommend public transport to anyone who has the opportunity to visit our country.
By the way, the Zurich/Kloten airport has the train station right under the airport building, you can hardly get any closer.
Last but not least, since the municipal transport company in Switzerland is also part of it, imagine there is a tram company that maintains tram lines to 2 neighboring countries, i.e. connects 3 countries. Where else is this?
I agree with almost everything you said, but my only issue is with your arguments about trains not working in big countries. Most people don't commute to work from one side of the US to the other one. Most people have a 30 KM commute in the US, so a Public transport system like in Switzerland would work perfectly there. Even for longer Trips for example New York Chicago if High Speed rail existed on this route it would be still faster and more reliable than plane travel

From my experience, trains are much easier to book and board than planes. You can show up, by a ticket, and board a train in as little as 5-10 minutes. As for a plane, I’ve waited anywhere from 2-4 hours for them to get in the air!

I arrived in switzerland 20 years ago. First day, i was to take the train from the airport to my school. The time written was 12.42. I honestly thought obviously it means 12.45. The damn thing left at 12.42. But they are expensive.
Why do you think we are known for accurate clocks? So that people board the train at 12.42 and not at 12.45 🤣

You don't have to show a ticket to board
But you better be prepared to show one if asked
That's right, because without a ticket, traveling by train (the same applies to all public transport) becomes really expensive.
Americans are so caught up in Big Houses, Flashy Cars and wearing Diamonds and don't look at what really matters. In London we see plenty of really famous people on London transport. Europeans are much more low key.

If you miss one connection you can give them a call and they usually refund the whole ticket price

I'd say we have the best train system period. especially since the entire network was the first one in the world to be 100% electric. starting in 1967, when the last steam train was retired.
We also have Apps where you can book the ticket on the train
You can just buy a ticket at a ticket machine or online but only for overnight trains to other countries you really gotta reserve a seat
The thing is that short distance travel CAN really benefit from individual transportation but over longer distances (take that USA) proper train networks are the most efficient and also most costefficient way of transportation for PEOPLE AND WARES
I think the average main line space between trains is arround 2min in the most used parts of the tracks
What I found misleading: the CITY of Zurich has only around 300,000 inhabitants not 1.5 mio, they are talking about the Kanton (similar to a state in the US) that is also named Zurich. Quite confusing

If U Ar a tourist, U ifen pay Les for a train, I AM a lokal person, I pay much more for a train ticket . For 30km about 10 dollars. For 10 dollars U can drive in Kenia 500km. Yesterday I take a bus inside Schaffhausen city . For only 3 km I pay 4 dollars.
Hello from Basel (Switzerland), I have the SwissPass (half-price annual subscription), so I only pay half price for all trips, this also applies to the city tram and bus network. In particular, the trip to visit my grandchildren costs me around 17 CHF (around 18.80 US$) for a trip of around 90 minutes. With the car I need at least petrol for this amount (probably more), to be fair you would have to add wear and tear on the car etc. and I don’t have any stress because the train runs on time (I’ve checked for deviations within 2 minutes never paid attention to it, but it doesn't matter to me either).
The only I know about trains in Europe is that they work inside countries, not across borders. Price of an over-border ticket can be +30EUR, doubling or trippling total price for the whole ride.
It is cheaper to ride to a border-city like eg. Cieszyn(PL)/Těšín(CZ) or Zgorzelec(PL)/Görlitz(GER) and just walk from the train station in one state to the train station in second state.
They do work across borders !
I live around Lausanne in Switzerland, I pay a yearly 100CHF for cheaper tickets, I went to Milano and it was only 80CHF for both ways! My bf only payed 27CHF since he has the general subscription that cost a lot but still cheaper than having a car
Hello from Basel (Switzerland), well, we have 3 train stations, the Swiss, the French and the German train here in Basel, should that not already indicate enough cooperation, then also that our municipal transport company (BVB) both to France and to Germany (i.e. across the border).
Yes nice Trainsystem we have but just ridiculous expansive! You can fly cheaper in the next country then take a long way with train in switzerland!

They aren't. Swiss public transport still is amazing. Yeah costs are rising an I do agree with you on that front. The government NEEDS to subsidize the prices to make sure Public Transport is cheaper
Cycling as a transportation is definitly easier/better in Netherlands, but if you talk sports then what the hell? You drive around on a pancake xD
