  • I used to be a big fan of Evernote. But, over the years, it got more bloated and complicated. Recently, I realised that I’ve switched almost exclusively to Apple Notes, and I’ve got five reasons why it works brilliantly for me.

      I used Evernote and yes to your point was getting bloated. I have been using Notability which was great for PDF’s and the pencil support in my opinion is awesome. I used Microsoft One Note as my employers choice and it is the same to sync with access anywhere. But recently I started using Apple notes and this app is so underrated with the simplicity being its great feature. From making lists to having the completed task being automatically checked off to making excel type notes. The more I use it the more I use the other two programs.
      Great video as well.

      I used to use Evernote, but I’m an Office 365 subscriber and figured, why pay for Evernote when OneNote is available as part of the Office subscription? I don’t consider Apple Notes because I’m also a Windows and Chrome OS user.

    After much trial and error, Apple notes is my favorite note-taking app.
    As a Windows PC user with an iPhone, I was on a mission to find a notetaking app that would sync between my devices. First, I chose Google Keep and it did the job. However, I realized that I take 80% of my notes on my iPhone, and Apple notes seemed much faster than Google Keep on the iPhone. Once I found out you can use Apple Notes from a Windows PC using the web, I made the switch. Using Apple Notes from the web is not that bad and it is well worth the simplicity, features, and speed if you primarily take your notes on an Apple device.
    Thank you for sharing!

    I've used Evernote for over a decade, and wouldn't switch to Apple Notes simply because it doesn't serve my needs. I keep notes forever, refer back to them, and share some notes/notebooks publicly. For example, I publish my astronomical observations - Astronomy Observing Log - can't do that with Apple Notes or most other note-taking apps/services! Evernote is worth the cost for me...but I appreciate where you're coming from with simple, short-term notes.

    Hi Mark thanks for this. Apple is not just amazing, it’s free, and it’s right there. My only concern is about exporting and backing up notes outside of the app. I am talking about archiving and such - something that I personally find to be necessary, all the more so when the number of notes gets unwieldy. As far as I know Apple doesn’t have a solution for this, right now there is no way to back up notes other than exporting one note at a time to PDF. Any advice, suggestions , ideas?

  • @brynalan
    @brynalan Před rokem

    Yep !! I got rid of Evernote in a hurry once I understood the brilliance of Notes. And got soooo tired of the constant suggestions to send more more money. Took forever to copy paste each Evernote note over to Notes ( the bulk transfer function was miserably inept. Surprise! They don’t want to facilitate your departure). Once the process was done, I went to a local cheers bar to celebrate. This video is a brilliantly thorough summary of all that is. I struggled with everything he mentions in trying to find an Evernote alternative.

    I used Notes when I first came into contact with Apple. After a two-year break, I came back and I am rediscovering what a great tool it is. It's the full sync with other Apple devices that makes everything go everywhere. I also use shared notes, where my wife can complete my shopping list on an ongoing basis. I am very happy with Notes, this is an app without which I cannot imagine my life ;)

      It would be nice if you could lock a folder instead of just one note at a time. The grid is the reason why I’m back using notes again cause sometimes I just need to hand write while journaling and it get sloppy with out it. Plus the combination of both looks great

    I also started with Evernote and at first it was awesome, I loved how powerful it was when I first started using it and I was diligent about being organized, creating well-formed notes, etc. It just didn't work for me though for the same reasons as you stated - I'm an "in the moment" note taker and don't want to have to deal with hefty apps, or sync issues, etc.
    I thought Apple's Notes app would be too limiting, but in the end I'm a chaotic note taker. I take notes in the moment and I'm pretty terrible about organization, Apple Notes allows me to control the chaos to some degree and still actually be able to find my notes! The Quick Notes app on iPad is also fantastic!

    The only thing in apple notes that I don’t like, is that if you use the Apple Pencil, it creates a space for sketching but I maybe just want to highlight something I wrote or add something or draw connections with arrows etc.
    Also, if you Import an pdf, it does it in a way where you just see the first page and have to click inside to see more. -> the way notability and good notes are handling this stuff is better I think.

    Notes is perfect for me. My daughter is in medical school & uses Notability for her classes & rotations. She found Notes to be a little simple & wanted something with more punch. She takes her note on an iPad with Apple Pencil. It also syncs across her devices so that helps also.

  • @adrianlw2750
    @adrianlw2750 Před 3 lety +3

    I use Apple Notes on daily basis, have been for more than 8 years. Do use dictation. Rarely use drawing. Like that I can add photo to a note. Like the folder and “pin” features. Do use “lock” of a note for some. I would say I am 95% satisfied with the app. Simplicity is one thing that attracts me, and it is free! No adverts. It just works, and across all my Apple devices, no hassle.
    I don’t like the printing aspect though - lacks flexibility to produce a document to my requirement (font size, margins). So if I want to print something, I generally either put up with the format that comes out or find another platform.

I transferred all my notes into Apple Notes (not the easiest to do, but 50 at a time), and cancelled my Evernote subscription this week. NO Robbie I do not think so ! I got so fed up with their bulk transfer thing, ended up laboriously copy pasting hundreds of Evernote records into Notes. Customer ‘service’ was worthless. But patiently ported over years of Evernote records over time. When all done, I felt transcendent. Just looked at their website again. Gawwwwwd what I left behind. So many restrictions and fee levels. What irked me most was hitting record size limits quickly (adding photos, you can imagine how often error messages pile up)

    • @brynalan
      @brynalan Před rokem

      Dang just realized I’ve saved $8 month by jumping ship and going to Notes. Looking again at their site, the plan levels and restrictions are almost comical. What was especially infuriating was per record storage limitations on Evernote. Add photos and you quickly overshoot storage (unless you upgrade!). Apple Notes I never think twice about adding one photo or ten, it’s irrelevant. What finally sold me on notes was the main reason I jumped into Evernote in the first place - the ability to create not just folders but subfolders. Jeeeesh I’m so glad I escaped that morass.

I use only a fraction of the functionality of Evernote and recently decided to jump ship and adopt Notes for many of the reasons you share. Exporting from Evernote to Notes is silly easy however I was stopped mid migration when I couldn’t find a way to link one note to another note within Apple Notes. I’ve heard it should be easy as of IOS 15 but it continues to elude me. Even SR support at Apple fail to tell me how to do it. So, for now I am using both Notes and Evernote.

You can write, type, dictate, collect photos and scans and links all in one file and then access the information easily on all your Apple devices. It’s as small as a quick thought or as large as you need it to be. I do like Notability, Colla Note and Noteful for written notes. I also use a Remarkable tablet for note taking. I was ultimately only in it for the multi-device synchronisation. I'm now looking at ways to import and organise my notes in Apple Notes now instead of being all over the shop (we sound very similar in that regard), so thanks for the useful review! The sketch-note style is actually perfect as I am also a creative and use the Apple Pencil and draw a lot. It's going to be a bit of a process to transition though by the looks of it.

I have spent more than I care to remember on apps that have quite frankly turned out to be to full of themselves and not full of use for the user. Being a very green writer I tend to have more 'IN WORK' ideas than 'COMPLETED' ideas. They used to be spread everywhere, not now, they sync with everything. I no longer have the excuse of missing that key idea I wrote on the back of a Tesco till receipt. Good article well done, sometimes the right choice is there all the time in front of us, it just needs to be seen.

    Just made the switch from Evernote to Notes after years. Notes has grown up to good enough, and Evernote keeps bombarding you with upgrades (both the app and what you should add). Evernote had some formatting oddities. Plus, although I haven't completely tested this: with Evernote you have to take action to make sure you have your notes offline, whereas I'm told Notes has a complete copy on the iPhone. I however wished I'd waited the next macOS and iOS upgrades since they support tags. Not sure they would have exported anyway. I was only lightly using Tags which was the only feature I was aware I was giving up.

    In the beginning, iphone 3G, I used apple notes. All notes (work, private, hobby) came in 1 big heap. When I discovered Evernote, I was completely blown away. Apple Notes has changed a lot. Unfortunately you cannot add PDF, MS WORD documents in Apple notes. When this position finally comes, I might switch.

    I will consider moving to Evernote as it is overcomplicated for me. What I am missing in Notes it is a full screen view of a note itself. I have it in iA Writer, but to hear. I didn't now about the lock feature. Looks great. Thanks for the video.

    This was great Mark. I can truely relate to your sentiments on third party apps. I have tried so many and still have such a mixture it’s starting make things tricky for me. I find myself always going back to Apple’s suite of apps, which of course are sweet! I have a paid subscription to Evernote and have stopped using this. If I could find a simple way of exporting all my docs from it I would cancel my subscription but it holds most of my docs that I’ve saved for tax purposes so will probably keep my subscription for another fiver years even though I don’t use the app.

    Thanks for sharing Mark! This is a fantastic overview. I'm currently a OneNote user who is considering switching back to Apple Notes with their recent upgrade. I think the organization features are a really compelling switch for me. The big thing that holds me back is the freedom that OneNote has to annotate and draw anywhere. Apple Notes still seems to miss that part. Great overview. Thanks for sharing your thinking process.

    Thanks for this really useful video and for convincing me to finally make the switch to Apple Notes. I had no idea you can password protect notes. I've been an Evernote user since 2008 and subscribed mainly for multiple device syncing (Apple computers, iPad & Android phone) and offline access but I never made use of any of the extra features so it becomes hard to justify paying the $95 CAD each year. Also, seeing that I will be switching back to iPhone this year from a Samsung Galaxy, this will definitely be a better solution. Now to figure out how to import or copy all my notes from Evernote to Notes.

    I'm an absolute Note-Poweruser. I came from Evernote, but i hated the way they suppressed the ability to just send notes. I've converted to Notes two Years ago and it was hard at the start. I missed things like #Tags, Note-Links and Checklists. Apple finally implemented checklists and #Tags will come with Ios14 and Monterey. So I'm just waiting for the Links to other Notes into Note. I work with other People on Notes and Folders of Notes and it's perfect. You can even write together in one Note. I'm a Apple-User for 15 Years now an try to use the Build-In Apps. I Use Reminder instead of Things (i own Things), i use Apple-Calender and i use Apple-Mail instead of Spark, Outlook and Airmail - even if i own all of them - and with every Updated you receive integrated features so it works well with the other apps. I'm quite happy with that decision.

    I use Notes a my main note taking app for 2 years now, after using Evernote for work and and notes for personal things.
    It does a perfect job, especially thanks to the latest updates.
    The Cons:
    Note handling coding languages (I like to keep some SQL, or to take notes from my bootcamp. Not possible).
    Also not easy to link notes between them
    In case of mistake on the iPhone (erasing content of a note), no CTRL+Z button (very scary if you do the wrong action)
    Tables are not well integrated. Especially coming from other tools like Excel or Google sheet. I would love a proper copy paste of spreadsheet

    I used Bear for more than 2 years now because of the Markdown functionality. But in the past months I have been using Apple Notes more and more. Especially when I upgraded my 8.5-year-old MacBook Air from 2013 to the new Apple M1 MacBook Air.
    So, yeah. Apple notes got much, much better, and I am using less and less Markdown. Ok for my own blog posts, but for daily notes? No, not really. I use them for all kinds of stuff and information. On the other hand, at work, where I cannot use my own devices I use a TiddlyWiki which I also use privately. But that's more for things I like to share with the work, as my wiki gets uploaded to a web server regularly. If I could share an apple note with the public, that would be great too, but there are way better services for than Apples Note system.

And, of course, I use Apple Notes. I agree with all that you say, but I would really like Notes to incorporate a reminder/alarm facility. I think that "Notability" is the greatest piece of software in the known universe for note taking on an iPad with Apple Pencil. I can’t figure out if it can be translated from handwritten note to text notes.

    Eventually I came back to Apple Notes and I use it all the time now in preference to Noteshelf or Evernote because of its simplicity. I like using the latest Apple Pencil and Notes is good for that. The other way I use it is when I'm researching for a project I copy any web URL I'm working on to a note, then at the end of the day or the week I allocate all those notes to a folder, so then I have a trail I can refer back to. Frustrations include the facts that I cannot annotate a pasted photo in Notes using the Apple Pencil - this is another way of saying it doesnt have layers. Also I cannot re-size a pencilled note. So when I need those features I have to switch to Pages, or Procreate.

    My biggest issue with Apple notes is shared folders. Me and the wife share a lot of notes in folders. Those notes don't show up on the web version of notes, so I can't access them from my work PC when i'm at work. I'd have to pull up my phone. that's fine but the fact that that's still an issue years later makes me sad.
