    One way bearing/centrifugal clutch between trans and e-motor so busa can overrun e-motor.
    Convert busa throttle body to electric, use drive by wire foot pedal resistance to drive input for motor controller and e-throttle body.
    ORRRR
    force e-motor speed (compensating for gearing differences) to match busa speed using mag pickup on busa, throttle pedal then only controls busa.
    Then for reverse you use vw reverse switch as input for a linear actuator to pull busa clutch in. Also for slow vehicle speeds, you have it also pull in busa clutch.
    Make 2nd the lowest gear on busa so then you only have to worry about shifting in one direction depending on if you're up/downshifting.
    1st gear only with e-motor.....leave vw trans in whatever gear is ideal for e-motor launching - then when you reach a specific vehicle speed you want to transition so busa takes over, you physically or a linear actuator kicks VW shifter into neutral so it's not a drag on driveline and then busa clutch linear actuator mentioned above let's out busa clutch.
    Then you figure out what gear to put VW trans in to use e-motor as electric boost to pass or something...(depending on how you're planning to drive it those might be the same gear).
    Then use strain gage on VW shifter only in left/right directions (these shift signals would get ignored at a lower vehicle speed for parking lot driving/etc.) acting as a "sequential shifter" for busa shifter using a pneumatic or linear actuator. Assuming busa knows what gear it's in, you'd make sure it cant shift down past 2. You don't have to limit upshifting because I think busa trans already does that.
    Does vw trans have LSD?
    And did Ford ranger diff have LSD?
    Hope that sparks some ideas for ya!!

    Excited to see this happen! this is what I initially wanted to do (electrify a FWD car and then add bike engine to the back) before I decided to go with the Leaf starting point. I suggest drive by wire on the ICE to give flexibility of controlling the throttles through one pedal but electronically biasing them. I have my system now where if the clutch is in, the DBW stays at idle engine doesn't rev at all, but when I pull away full throttle EV and then dump the clutch at about 7 mph the ICE gets going. No stress on the bike clutch whatsoever.

    Since the EV setup is just for occasional use, I'd mount a throttle lever to the shifter, use the pedals for the bike motor, and use electronic shifters on the wheel for the bike. Throttle on the shifter would also make it easier to float the gears too, as you can just adjust throttle pressure until it slides into gear, and keeping it separate like that will make it less confusing when in operation

    1) The Lovejoy is going to tear up the set-screw, and make a mess of the shafts... drill new holes for new set screws that extends into the shaft, then tap the hole in the Lovejoy. At the very least, just add secondary set screws on each spider.
    2) If the electric transmission is in gear when the 'Busa is doing its 'Busa thing, you're going to be generating way too much Regen Voltage back into the electric motor Controller... and possibly burn it out.

    This project is awesome, though I have to ask why you chose to put the Hayabusa motor in the back and the electric motor in the front? Wouldn't it make more sense to keep a gas engine in the front which is already designed to accommodate ICE powertrains (though I suppose adapting a bike motor to FWD has its own challenges) and put the electric motor under the bed since it takes up less space and wouldn't necessitate cutting a hole in the bed? That way it would still be usable as a truck. Still a really cool project and I'm excited to see where it goes! There needs to be more of an aftermarket for homemade hybrids like this, which are much more interesting and appealing than full EV conversions IMO.
    Also that's the best-sounding electric motor I've ever heard, it sounds almost like an ICE. Why can't factory EVs sound like that without faking it through speakers?

    • @AceEverett
      @AceEverett Před rokem +1

      Because the Hayabusa engine is more powerful, and a rear power bias is always preferred over front bias. Also, if the batteries run out of juice, you still have a RWD car instead of being stuck with FWD until they get charged back up, so it'll be fun to drive 100% of the time.

      It's pretty standard to do with EV swaps on Beetles, you pretty much put it in a gear and you can change it if you want to, but you can usually leave it in top gear and never touch it due to the torque..
      As far as a DSG/CVT, do not forget that electric motors have insanely high RPM ranges and they make peak power and torque effectively through the entire range. The only reason multi-speed transmissions exist is because ICE engines have low RPM ranges and are inefficient in their power delivery, thus you need to make gear ratios that take advantage of where the engine makes peak power. And let's not forget just how fast the Rimac Nivera is without needing a silly multi-geared setup like the Porsche.
      Really, at most you'd need one extra gear.

    Servos or digital potenciometers (for electric) for the throttles.
    For the pedal a pot.

    Use a servo for the Hayabusa gas, and an electric pedal for the E-motor than read the voltage of the electric pedal with a single board computer like a. Arduino and control the servo from that. Really easy to do, as long as you keep a safety margin. anything below 1 volt or over 4 volt on the pedal should mean no speed input, so it cannot runaway when a wire breaks.

    Throttle issue can be solved by using an arduino to read the E-pedal position and actuate a servo motor that controls the throttle on the bike engine. Should be pretty simple and cheap if you know someone that can write the program for you the hardware will cost around $25. This will also allow you to tweak the speed of both motors so they run in unison.

      As I understand it, the reason more people don't build homemade hybrids is that there's no aftermarket motor controller systems for syncing the two motors. Every system of this sort in production cars is so specific to its platform that it can't really be transferred easily to another car. If there was some kind of universal controller that could easily be programmed to sync up with a gas engine, I imagine there would be a lot more hybrid projects since you get the best of two worlds that way.

    If you plan on changing gears on the move, that shouldn’t be difficult to facilitate. The rotor in the motor won’t have much more inertia than a conventional clutch disc and first motion shaft and gear set, so you just need a switch to momentarily disconnect the power, so the rotor can spin freely, allowing the synchro rings to match the rpm, as normal, before reconnecting the power and either accelerating or regen braking.
    Not sure you’re going to need that capability, though. EV motors tend to have torque and power across a huge rev band, so I expect you’re going to pick one ratio and leave it there. Don’t be tempted to run the motor backwards, using the standard transmission, tempting as that would be. The oil won’t circulate and the bearings will cook. I found that out the hard way.

    • @eDoc2020
      @eDoc2020 Před rokem

      If the electric motor is only run in reverse when reversing the car how bad would it be? Most people don't drive in reverse too much. As for changing EV gears, the best way would be to sense the wheel speed, apply the ratio for the upcoming gear, and then drive the motor to a perfect rev match.

    • @duncancremin1708
      @duncancremin1708 Před rokem

      @eDoc2020 As to how bad it could be, the answer is Very. A 500 yd recovery, involving a car stuck in reverse, that I wedged the clutch down in order to move it, destroyed the input shaft and lay shaft bearings. And that was with no drive, just spinning the disc in the wrong direction. An expensive mistake.
      Yes, of course you’re right about electronically matching revs to the gears. But that’s not as easy to do as a simple electrical disconnect that allows the mechanical box to do what it’s designed to do.
      It introduces complexity for no practical gain, so probably not worth while.
      The reality is, with a VW box, the synchros are very strong and for the amount of gear changing that’s likely to be needed, they’ll be well up to the task of letting the driver manually synchronise the revs.
      I just felt a simple disconnect, perhaps operated by the clutch pedal, would make it more driver friendly.

My son is a mechanic and he keeps those rubber coated plastic star shaped bushings in stock all the time. He has a customer that brings his car in about every 6 mos. to have that bushing replaced. I wouldn't bet $20 that thing is going to last a month in this application... I hope I am wrong. Hopefully Doorman makes a cheap replacement bushing for that too...

When you're driving normally, you'll only be changing gears using the bike engine transmission. Hardly a shock that the raffle tickets are under sold.
    There’s enough evidence out there already to suggest that the EVs are adding to the problem, without any of the usability problems that come as standard with them. Most people are hanging on, waiting for the next thing, whatever that may be, doing their bit for the environment in the meantime by preserving whatever they currently drive.
    This is looking promising, though. Eco friendly, because using an existing vehicle, also installing a super efficient motorcycle engine for the dinosaur side and epower for low emission zones.
    And, for the drag strip, presumably both can operate together. How cool is that?
