There is - after this turned out to be so successful, I created Holistic Songwriting Academy.
@@Holistic-songwriting so how do we see the next episode?
@@bradlee5277 I'm looking for a while now and didn't find anything
@@regianesantos659 yeah i think he made it into like a full on course on his website. where there is a lot more information at a cost
@@bradlee5277 Ah, ok. Thanks for the information.
Thanks for being vulnerable.
It's fascinating seeing someone else in his private songwriting process.
💯
lmao
You just written my mind =)
This video is so vulnerable I mean it’s exactly what artists avoid showing because of the intimate sketchy process of creating hooks
I don't know about yall, but i think this is always the best process in song writing. Babbling, improvisation; what ever comes to your head, but trying to make the words all make some kind of sense together.
Roderick Holman totally agree, seems to always produce the most genuine sounds
It is the best for some people, not for others. Different brains work differently. Personally I would never be able to write this way. I need to understand why I do what I do, and that's too brain intensive to improvise like he is doing. And that's not better or worse. It's just different.
Some of my favorite written songs have come like this. Also a Songwriting journal helps. Writing daily even if a sentence.
Personally, I' d rather start with an idea, It's much better to have an idea that needs a song than a song that needs an idea, that's where a lot of that method of writing can fall flat for me, it can be a bit "cart before the horse"
Babbling/improvising for the rough draft creates flows people resonate with faster
finally someone who's not afraid to show how improvising really works and that it's fine to sing absolute nonsense before you come up with anything!! much love to you!
Maybe my methods can help make it an easier process for some people. Check out my comment written on April, 21, 2022.
You basically wrote the outline for AN ENTIRE ALBUM in 5 minutes.
Rossco Giordano :)
Why do you say that?
@@okygoriginal1895 if more time were spent on each section/idea, and briefly expanded, it'd easily become an entire song. Put all songs together, and BAM! Album done.
lol true
True. I love all 3 songs, they made my smile and touched me. There is always someone who needs each of the songs. Make more like this. Sitting in front of blank keyboard is challenging.
I'm impressed you would share this part of the writing process, the basic building of a song are very intimate moment I wouldn't share with anyone. Thank you very much !
I’m the same way, my wife and kids Know to stay clear when I’m in songwriting mode. His process is his but it’s to scattered for me.
Todd McNeill bist du erfolgreich mit deiner Musik ?
Aye...if someone got a hold of my iPhone voice notes I might be put in a straight jacket 😆
What if you wrote like 3 Catchy hooks and used them instead as the verse. 🤯
Dude is a true pro...dude you got guts!!thank you
I vote for "like a manatee"
I would vote for this song, but there are just waaaay too many songs about manatees out there! :-)
Yeah, manatees are too mainstream these days
Lmao
@@matenorth manatees are so last year
That was awesome. Not all too different from what my sketching sounds like, but this switched it from “I have no idea what I’m doing” to “none of us have any idea what we’re doing. It’s ok.” Thanks a ton for this.
Pro tip: after you finish it keep going like how he kinda did saying gibberish and it helps so much she writing later
"Returned" feels like it has a lot of potential.
Reminds me of 'Retrograde' by James Blake. Actually a few of them do as he using (I think) the I iv iii V chord progression
@@marklondon2008 Or Young and Menace from Fall Out Boy. Specially the live piano version
Sound like some james bond soundtrack.
@@leonscholz5679 If you add Adele in there you have a Bond song
I get a Deadmau5 kinda vibe from the chords.
When We Surrender has such a Chris Cornell vibe. Love it.
Maybe he's been listening to Chris' music lately... Most of the hooks in this video reminded me of the style of Chris. Especially his solo work and Mother Love Bone.
I agree!
Rest In Peace, Chris :(
First thing i heard
Totally agree! Totallt a Chris Cornel vibe! A bit like the first audioslave album
The great alone. Sounds like Maroon 5 and Coldplay had a baby
I don't know if you'll see this comment, but a few days ago I sat here with tears in my eyes because you had the courage to show this process. You see, I've done similar things, and even really weird things that made me think I was truly a little crazy. That "normal" songwriters, who weren't broken like me, wrote songs in a completely normal fashion. From the way ephemeral songs/melodies will just arrive in my mind and will vanish if I don't immediately jump up (even in the middle of the night) and get it down before it fades, to the really weird ways I can trigger my mind to take off with new melodies/songs using vinyl and cassettes, I've always just thought I was weird, broken, but broken in a way that works for creating music. It's hard to explain. But this video started me down a road where I spent a few days researching composers and songwriters and what their writing process looked like and I have been blown away and relieved to find out the things I do, the things that I thought meant something was wrong with me, are actually quite common among composers and songwriters! It turns out that that one day when the wife and I were driving along and a song arrived in my head and I abruptly stopped, got out, and walked around humming the melody into my phone wasn't so weird after all! But my wife sure was confused, lol. So, I learned that us songwriters are all a "weird" bunch, haha. Thanks again, dude. This video made a huge impact on my life.
same here bro, its like you have this wierd melody or idea in or head and you need to record or put it somewhere before you forget it or lose it. i have lost or forgettin' some ideas that sounded pretty great in the past, i didn't have any recordin' devices on me or wasn't near one, some ideas were pretty catchy... those ones were pretty easy to remember. Im actually aspiring to be an artiste i love music so goddamn much since i was 13yrs old and its pretty much improved/influenced my life.
@@scotthearts9634 Awesome, sounds like you're a natural. Not many people truly hear music, original music. It usually comes at inconvenient times for me. In the middle of the night or somewhere I can't pull my phone out and hum into it, etc. lol.
@@adamaj74
I always make up words and sounds while trying out melodies. The true magic in any art is knowing there is no wrong way to do it, only right. Pure creation. I’m glad you own that and feel comfortable in it now.
Happy writing!
"Is it something you lost in me" that shit gave me chills
I do really agree with you
Totally agree! Has some sort of gut-level reaction where you instinctively understand it but don't really know why.
Yeah, I think he had something with the "Lost in me" thing, I'm still watching but I hope he doesn't bail on it.....first idea is usually thr best
Yeah I felt that
It reminds me of Chet Faker's "I'm Into You"
I know this is how a lot of my friends and some of my favorite songwriters write songs but it feels nice to actually SEE someone else just singing gibberish into a microphone to write songs
Wow this is a very brave video to upload. I know for a fact this is how so many song writers work but they all just pretend they had the finished entirety of the song composed in their head before they started working on it for real.
You just have to sound like an idiot for a while until eventually something decent will emerge.
Jamie Wilson I write the same way! Now I don’t feel so alone🙂
@@MrDequese Its an amazing technique to use when you have a melody but no lyrics, or unfinished lyrics. I love listening to some of the early demo's of red hot chili peppers songs, where you have basically the instrumental sections tracked in full, just as they are on the album, yet over the top you have Anthony Kiedis singing parts of the song I know, followed by jibberish...which at the same time is almost like the final vocals in terms of the melody, the rhyming, the pitch and even some harmony parts.
You'd get stuff like "lie on du du, the sea horse, ride on with, da da this force" which ends up being (on a track called Dosed... awesome song...everyone should check it out! Including the "rough mix" as its very relevant to this video) something like "climb on to your sea horse, this ride is right on course"
Big facts!!
Most song writers have specific roles. One would take care of the lyrics and the other of the melody. Rock songs (not the commercial ones) are written that way - you start from a chord progression, then a melody line. Eventually a vocal line, and lyrics
All these comments are so validating to me as an aspiring songwriter ngl. Like, im glad we all look weird as hell making a song and im glad we all agree that he’s brave as hell for writing on camera. I didnt think we would all agree that its such an odd, sensitive process!
It was obscene, Officer; I mean, he just bared his heart and exposed his soul!
Music first of course:
1. Chords
2. Melody
3. Words on melody
actually use to , now no.3 is first and m writing hits..well potential hits!
1. Bassline
2. Percussion
3. Chords
4. Melody
My most successful song so far was written lyrics first, then melody, then chords and arrangement, but each song has its own unique journey.
Try all of them
IMHO, we can never tell.It depends on the mood of the songwriter or that specific moment when all of a sudden a "melody or a series of words" pop out in the realm of his creativity. At times it could be that way or it could be otherwise.
"WHEN WE SURRENDER" IS A HIT PERIOD
I’ve watched about 50 videos on songwriting and your the first to show their actual process. It’s a PROCESS. I think more of us songwriters should post this stuff. Thank you!
I woke up today with “We are the returned” stuck in my head, I had to come back and listen to it again 👍🏾

Dana Raquel lost in me
I’ve come back to this video 4 times. Someone else said “write 3 sets of lyrics, and the best melodies within them should be put together. The best melody is the chorus, the second best is the hook and the third is the verses.” This all has helped me so much!
Thanks for doing these videos!
This was fantastic! Thanks for sharing!
I find it helpful to record your music, and rather than writing a vocal pattern while you're playing, come up with it while listening to the recording. You're taking up more "space" in your brain when trying to do both at the same time. Writing the vocal pattern separately, before trying to play it at the same time as your guitar or whatever, seems to help me focus, and pay greater attention to detail in vocal patterns.
"Lost In Me". I hear some Cornell in your vocals btw!
When We Surrender gets my vote

when we surrender
"Lost in me" This video was incredible, btw. I'd love to see a lot more like this of the actual process. It's so helpful to see people going through the process. Songwriting is damn hard and it's easy to forget that when all you see are edited videos and perfected endings. I end up thinking that I just suck as a songwriter when I struggle all the time. It's just part of songwriting and I need to keep remembering that. videos like this are a good reminder. It's one thing to read about tips and what not, it's another to see those tips being used in real life. Thank you so much
I didnt know you could sing like that, props to that falsetto 👊
I probably would've spent 3 or 4 days trying to learn what I've learned in this video. You're a lifesaver, dude.
[edit]: Also, you got a hell of a voice dude. Amazing songs as well, but my favorite is "When We Surrender". The music worked so well with the lyrics, but that's just my opinion.
When u sing low notes u sound like johnny cash and when u sing high notes u sound like Adam lavin and I mean that in the best way possible
My vote is for a song named That is One Squeaky Pedal.
When we surrender. Sounds like Chris Cornell. Beautiful
I cannot thank you enough for this type of video. The behind the scenes, often gross, process of making a song is never talked about and I'm so thankful you have the balls to show us a method of doing it. Thank you

You have such a unique voice and accent, I really like hearing you write!
Thank you!
I really appreciate you having the guts to put something like this online. I always feel so embarrassed when going through this process, so it's good to see someone else doing the exact same thing. I also like your voice :)
I appreciate your transparency with you process. I try to do the same type of thing when I write and it's good to see someone else be creative in such a raw way! Thank for this!
As a metal dude who constantly struggles to fit lyrics awkwardly over instrumentals, this video may have changed my life

Even if we aren’t into the same genre, I like how you showed your creation process 💯 Love the videos 🔥

yeah, you really got into the groove on "When we surrender"
bro i just found your youtube and fell in love with your voice. I am grateful to live in a world where the artist is vulnerable. Thanks man fr. from one singer to the next. this is amazing 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I loved the high note in "When We Surrendered" and also those random words near the end 😁😎
damn, you, sir, have a majestic voice. I guess, "returned"
'Outliers' by far was my favorite. A natural melodic sound and, to match it, you found a fresh, major progression quickly. The "searching for the sun" line was a great lyric as well. 'Returned' has potential but it looked like their was a struggle to establish a new chord progression that differed from the others. The falsetto melodic motif was what stole the show. Minus the lower range expedition there and some of the vocal runs, I thought the constant quarter beat rhythm might be a good direction to go. Other than those two all the others sounded the same to my ears. But these are my ears of course :)
The authenticity of this process made me subscribe so quick. Thank you bro, this is what we need...
Putting it bluntly.... you are the MAN for sharing this ! This is pure creative reality.
You are amazing. Thank you! Btw, definitely Outliers!!!!
When we surrender! such a soulful vibe...Btw, seems like everyone hear some Chris Cornell in your voice =)
This is the way I come up with all of my ideas. As the rhythm of the melody starts to take shape, the babbling or skat phrases hold the space for lyrics to eventually fall in. Thank you for sharing this because I wondered if other people used this process.
Thank you for showing us the songwriting process and not just TALKING about it like everyone else!
I'd give a vote for Like a Manatee :D
but I pick Outliers, I love the melody progression on it
8:50 I really like your lower notes. It reminds me of Pearl Jam. I think the first verse of your song should be down in this register, and then the next verse should be an octave higher.

Outliers. Optimistic without being schmaltzy, has lots of potential I feel :)
