I found so much possibilities in music than architecture as each building design requires justification. Whereas musicain can have the total control over the music. Even the song is bad, at least you can consume the product that you created straight after. Architecture taught me not affraid of creating things and improve on it. Music is probably the same but more freedom on the process of creating.

    Awesome video Andrew :)
Have you ever heard about the Schillinger system? It's basically a set of 'rules' for writing music, a lot of which stem from Maths and numeric sequences. I learnt about it at university, as I was taught by one of the leading acedemics on the subject (Jeremy Arden, he's on the Schillinger system Wikipedia). One of the things I've always taken from it specifically was a certain approach to melody writing regarding phrasing which is pretty much perfectly exampled by the girl at 4:00. Your initial melody follows the rules as far as phrase, followed by a variation on the phrase (similar phrase, overall higher pitch), and then she embellished it with an expansion (I might be a little off the mark with wording, it's been a while since I've explained it, I've just been using it without telling people >.>) which is essentially filling up the bars with a whole bunch of notes that often go higher than the original phrase. Finally she came to a cadence which finished off the melody at a satisfying end.
Naturally not all music follows this rule (kudos to Melodica girl, that was some intense re-working), but if you're stuck on a melody I find it so useful to use his teachings. I'd highly recommend the book with foreward by Jeremy Arden if you're interested (The Schillinger System of Musical Composition Vol1&2, though Vol1 is a very useful book in its own right).

Fascinating study, and a particularly fab entry from the jazz melodica at the end. I had a busy week, so didn't record a submission, but for the record my first instinct was to continue with the same three-note stepwise sequence rising from the last note of the supplied melody as you said five other people continued with. So call it six! :)
It's just occurred to me that that's because it's "Some Day My Prince Will Come" from Disney's Snow White. Dang. It's so tough not to write in borrowed fragments!!!!

Hey Andrew, this is a really cool video, and I just found your channel because of it! I love the idea of this experiment, but I have one nitpick with your theory on the subject of the picardy third. Your description of it is correct, but what you play isn't really a picardy third. I would say it is more of a modulation or a secondary dominant. A picardy third occurs when you are pretty solidly in a minor key, so you really expect the cadence to be on a minor chord. The song starts with a C major chord, and pretty solidly seems to be in C major. Your final chords are even the classic IV->V->I (F to G to C) progression. For it to be a picardy third, it would be in C MINOR and then when you do F->G it would then go to C MAJOR unexpectedly. Instead, you start in a major key, and then finish with an unexpected A major chord. This is the major 6th chord in C major, not what a picardy third would be: a major tonic when a minor is expected. I would say it is more of a secondary dominant to modulate to D major, or a type of deceptive cadence where you expect it to go to the tonic C chord but it goes to the A (VI) chord instead. You are certainly raising the third of the chord from what is in the key (C->C#) and it does sound cool, but I wouldn't call it a picardy third. Just my two cents!

Andrew, I think one of the reasons why a lot of people (myself included) used the E, F, G note pattern is because the melody is very similar to "L'Hymne à l'amour" which also does the E, F, G after the first part of the melody. Go check it out!!

The short snatch of melody you played and asked volunteers to continue comes from "Can't get used to losing you" by Andy Williams. However, I am sure you were unaware of that. But what is surprising/shocking is that 147 people didn't think of that musical reference. Probably says a lot about their age, and mine! Check out Williams' song and you'll hear what I mean.
    Interesting experiment, nevertheless!
