Learning To Play Magic The Gathering

  • I posted these videos 4 yrs ago now and some things have changed in the game and these videos weren't done quite the way I wanted them to be. I am planning to do a remake for 2014.
I plan on break up the videos more and make a lot of short ones with labels as to what they are so if people have questions on a specific part of the game they can find it easier plus make a walkthrough of a game for newer players. Obviously magic's rules are extensive and I can't cover all of them nor am I a certified ref but I can help newer players learn the basics hopefully in a more easier way than 5 crunched videos that aren't labeled as to what they cover....

You have a gift! thank you so much for being such a great help! I have looked at many videos but they all explain things in a way that a novice cant understand. THANK YOU SIR! :))

I think for the next videos I will break each rule up into smaller videos so if you have a question on say trample you can go to that specific video instead of watching a clumped together one like these. Keep in mind I am not a judge, which requires testing and hours of knowing the rules in and out. My videos are designed to give you the basics and get you playing. Thanks!

Hand size is maxed at 7 cards at the end of your turn. If you have 9 cards in your hand during your turn and you can play 2 of them before the end of your turn then you don't have to discard any. If not, then you must discard 2 cards at your discard step. The discard step knocks your hand back down to 7 at EOT. Cards like Spellbook alter this cap on your hand...

Like my friend Kyle, who uses a blue deck, always kicked my butt because my Black deck, because he had more cards. But now we know the exact rules, so it's more fun! Dynorider I do take some of your advice on putting atleast make a 3rd of your deck manna but it depends on the time just so you know I mean I would say make a third of your deck manna IF you use white or red cause they dont need as much manna but green needs alot of manna so you should put atleast a half of your deck manna + With magic the gathering there is no such thing as a perfect amount of land its all about luck and the way you shuffled your cards... Just so you know well thank you for helping me -Derpeh

People traditionally roll dice to decide who goes first as everyone has an equal chance on getting a higher number. What if I had a deck full of one drops? That would mean I almost never go first. Also, the winner of the roll gets to decide the turn order.

The best way to teach Magic to new players is to give the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM of rules needed to play the game. Once the player sees how the fun the game is, they'll put in the effort to learn more rules. This is a good video, but not for beginners.

So, what I could pick from this field of creatures is
    1. People who have no idea how to play
    2. People who don't want to play (why are you here)
    3. People who don't know a certain thing so they want to understand
    4. People learning bc of a lover, family member, or friend (I fall into the friend category)
    And lastly
    5. People that want to learn bc they want to understand all card games
    Oh, I almost forgot
    6. People that have a fingernail fetish

Unless they've changed the rules of doing a mulligan, it doesn't matter what you have in your hand. You can have all land, no land, or a perfect hand. I know they've changed mulligan before. It used to be if you had no lands or all lands you could mulligan back to 7. I'm pretty sure they've changed that. Anyone know what the official terms for mulligan currently are?

It's not referred to as health but life. Calling it health sounds weird, this isn't Call of Duty. And there's four ways to win, not just one. Reducing your opponent's life total to 0 or less, your opponent draws a card with no cards left in their library, your opponent has 10 or more poison counters, or you have a card that says you win the game if X condition is met.

NOTE: Some rules have changed since I made this video so I apologize for that!
    Mana burn no longer exists.
Since 10th edition in a multiplayer game you are allowed a Mulligan w/o a penalty once... then after that one less card is drawn each time. Yes you may Mulligan if you dislike your hand or mana is low or too much...
Terminology has changed a little too instead of "in play" it is "on the battlefield".

Nathanael Stewart Yup, any land. Basic lands tap for one color of mana. There are also special dual lands like Guildgates that can tap for whichever color you need that turn. A Gruul Guildgate can tap for either red mana or green mana.

  • @Dynorider2001
