I remember as a ten year old?? going over the old Mangaweka Viaduct in DX in the daytime…., just seemed completely wrong to have this immense Loco balancing n rocking in these two rails… so far in the air…🤯

Some of the infrastructure through the Manawatu gorge and central Hawkes Bay was in a pretty poor state when this was shot. At some stage; money is going to have to be spent on replacing or repairing those old timber bridges and laying fresh concrete sleepers. Especially now the road on the other side is history. That will allow for faster running times though.
