West Coast coal miner Robin Hughes had a crack at the world record for shovelling half a ton of coal, sadly he failed by only two seconds to take the record. Those dreams you followed Roly made you one of the kindest in inspirational people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. While most of 23 Carlisle Street was completed by the time I joined NZR. Many a time as I climbed the bank into Cambridge street on a weekend from the shunting yards to head home to our railway house, I would often hear the neighbourhood kids expressing delight in riding your fantastic rail setup. Seeing my little daughter in video two, cementing her place in a wagon for a trip around your home railway reminded me of precious days long since passed. Thanks for the memories Roly, take care Sir, was a real pleasure knowing you.😊👍

    Cool, but I guess the hardest audience is the daughter of the farmer who ran the dairy farm where the train was being shunted!! I remember those trains well - from mid-1963 when we took over that farm. And avoiding the trains running into our cows that crossed the tracks twice daily. So in case anyone thinks otherwise, we didn't also make them swim to the cowshed. Simply, the terrain is a bit flattened in the video in other words. I'll have to share some more farm aerial photos with you Roland. Lots of memories of that era. Good to see it all either way 🙂

      @@rolandpenhall4526 Yes. The farm backed on to Hume Pipes and various other stopping points. The biscuit factory there (Griffins ?) was also a train stopping point just before reaching Humes (from our direction, but the opposite side of the tracks). To that one you could add a whole swarm of Clyde Crescent kids stealing biscuits from it and taking them across to our hayshed to eat them. Dad did quite well out of snacks found abandoned in the hayshed - then my younger brothers tried the same trick and Dad went and paid for what they had pinched. He wasn't impressed. I've also (several weeks ago) done research on the fuel depots - which I remember extremely well from about 1960 before we moved to the Napier Road farm. Prior to that we had gone to Roslyn School. Shunting happened then as school finished for the day - which was crazy

I remember that well

  • @trouserbottomdog6120

    This is fantastic, the detail in the environment is great with the pond and the ranges in the background even the dairy farmers crossing at the top of the terrace. I don't know if they would have shunted with the main engine or had a little shunting engine in the yard. How long did it take you to put this all together?

    • @rolandpenhall4526
      @rolandpenhall4526 Před rokem

      Thanks, there is a lot more detail to be added. Dairy cows are certainly to be added to the scene as well as some lush green grass. You are most likely right, the Ka class would probably be too heavy for the tracks, most likely it would have been the Ab or Bb class. Just this section of the route has taken many hours, I have been working off and on the whole route for a couple of months or so. I have many photos and could do with some of the sidings, like Humes and the petrol sidings. Much more to do.

      Someone came up with the answer to my problem. Quote: "Stupid question (probably) but you don't have a section of track lain below the terrain do you? Have you looked under and gotten to the bottom of the chasm? I've had rogue track half a mile in the air before now with no real clue how or when I got it there so it stands to reason there could be some half a mile below. It may be that the "snap to" tool is getting confused and snapping to that instead see. Just a thought anyway." End Quote He was right.

      Basically it came down to Drivers hours which I think were a maximum of 10 hours IIRC. If a crew were going to exceed that time then a fresh crew would be dispatched by car to relieve them. All part of safety for drivers of Transport vehicles.

    This brought back memories. I was the F-15C pilot in the air show and this was my last demonstration prior to transferring from Kadena Air Base JA to Nelles AFB NV where I flew F-5s for 5+ years. There's another film of this show that I found by accident several years ago: "Ohakea Air Show NZ Airforce Day 28 February 1981" posted by Michael Herman. Apparently, he found this stored with a bunch of stuff he received from South Africa. I would really like to know how his film went from NZ to SA and back. As for me, I'm still kicking at 75.
