  • James at SIKKY Manufacturing shows you how to swap and E36 steering rack into your E30 using the SIKKY swap kit with steering rack spacers and steering shaft.
    The Sikky BMW E30 Steering Shaft Assembly was developed to make it easier to swap an E36 steering rack into your E30. The low profile design allows for maximum header clearance. The E30-E36 rack conversion and this steering shaft upgrade are required when using the Sikky LS swap kit.

    These BMW E30 to E36 steering rack conversion spacers are ideal for anyone swapping out their E30 steering rack for an E36 steering rack. The spacers take up the additional space between the rack and the crossmember that occurs when swapping an E36 rack to an E30 front crossmember. No more need to weld on E36 mounting tabs to your E30 crossmember or stack washers. These spacers also come with low profile mounting hardware.

    I noticed you put the bolt that holds the rack in from the top, with the nut on the bottom. I recommend putting the bolt head on the bottom and the nut on top. Otherwise, it's really difficult to get the bolt out once the engine is in place.

    You should do this video with the engine still in. Show how most of us will be doing the swap. The hard way.
    Also would it be suggested to drill and tap threads for the shaft if its a daily driven car?

    You still still use E36 tie rods, you just have to get both inner and outer. I prefer them for their adjustment. Also tip for others, slide the steering rack bolts from the bottom since the engine will prevent you from getting them out later. I haven't verified but your shaft conversion should also cover stock E30 racks in E30s. I still need to find a factory M20 E30 to measure. There aren't many around.
    Love the series

    I’m about to go for z3 rack for my 1988 e30 and no engine swap at this time. Would your kit work or yours is exclusively for LS swap application. Thanks!

    Curious if you would have any idea if e30 outer and inner tie rods would fit into an e46 rack . Im not using a e36 rack but im assuming it should be the same anyone know?

    • @SikkyTV
      @SikkyTV  Před 2 lety

      They would likely fit as far as diameter and thread size, only question would be what length would be after installed and if that would work. Worth a try!

    Would this swap still require ls mounts for e30 and not e36?

    • @SikkyTV
      @SikkyTV  Před 2 lety

      Yes, it's an e30 chassis and has an e30 subframe so it would need Sikky LS e30 mounts. We are adapting the e36 steering rack to fit on the e30 subframe

  • @burtonmotorsport1460

    Will this steering shaft work in right hand drive e30s? Because the starter motor on the LS is on the drivers side

    • @SikkyTV
      @SikkyTV  Před 6 lety

      Yes, we have heard from our RHD customers that it works. We have not tested it in house since we do not have any RHD e30s here but supposedly it works fine according to our European customers.

    • @SikkyTV
      @SikkyTV  Před 6 lety

      We have a power steering line kit if your going LS that has the right connections in the right positions for the LS power steering pumps. Are you swapping a different engine than the LS?

    • @SikkyTV
      @SikkyTV  Před 3 lety +1

      possibly, have not tried. It's very likely that it could. If you measure the diameter of the shaft on both sides where the splines are and count the splines we can take that info and confirm if it will or not. Emails sales@sikky.com with that info.

  • @budigunardi
    @budigunardi Před 4 lety

    works for a RHD?

    • @SikkyTV
      @SikkyTV  Před 4 lety

      It can. You would need to measure your shaft diameter and count your splines to make sure it’s the correct one before ordering. Email us with that info and we can tell you which one to get.

    • @SikkyTV

      The e36 steering rack is a couple different part numbers that have different ratios
