- Francis Bebey was filmed for this piece at Real World Studios during the Recording Week of 1995. It's a delightful film - one of our favourites - where he demonstrates how to play his one note bamboo flute. "I'm teaching you how to do it, you should pay me" he says with a big smile.
Francis Bebey was a noted writer and musician from Cameroon who sadly died in May 2001. Peter Gabriel spoke for all who encountered him at the Real World Recording Week in 1995 when he said "We were hypnotised... he embodied wisdom in lots of ways and it was a real delight".
Karl Wallinger, Peter's co-pilot in the Recording Week sessions spoke of his amazement at the music Francis produced from his tiny, single note, bamboo flute, describing the sound as "one of the prime numbers of music".

Was a delightful man, I just found out to my dismay that he died in 2001. I will look up his son, and be thankful I met Francis for a fleeting moment in this video and others, his books and music. Thank you.

@@kyllo8497 my dream would be to never encounter another human being again cause Ive figured out that it's a whole lot easier to not waste my precious time trying to figure out whether someone is going to kill me or be nice to me. If I didnt have to work, I might be able to fulfill my dream.

Funny thing is, this was filmed just outside Bath in the UK, and the railway line there is not electrified, so the trains on that line are diesels. I can actually identify the train from the sound it makes, an InterCity 125.
This is 1995, so he must be referring to steam engines. He would've been old enough to remember.

I love the way Bebey has the eyes to see the way the Pygmies have a conversation with their flute. This is not an obvious conclusion to draw, and needless to say one which people who dismiss the Pygmies as savages would never make.
I had the feeling that the Pygmies themselves probably think about the instrument this way, and perhaps he is speaking about it the way he was taught to play it.

Id argue call and response is a basic feature of music heard in a lot of styles and genres across the whole world.

Francis bebey from cameroon was one of the greatest african musicians,he invented many instruments.and has many melodies that have been used in cartoons and movies and radio shows.he is a genius in music

Kidi Bebey is a French journalist and author.
Bebey was born in Paris, France. Her family was originally from Cameroon. Francis Bebey, her father, was a journalist, writer, and musician. His work created a cultural environment for his children that encouraged them in writing and music. Two of her brothers became musicians.
Bebey studied literature at Lille University III and while there wrote a Ph.D. thesis on "dance and literature in Sahelian and bantou writers." She later received a Masters's Degree in Management at Paris Business School ESCP. In 1993, she became Editor-in-Chief of Planete Jeunes a Bayard Press magazine for young African-french readers. She was also the Editor-in-Chief of Planet Enfants, a magazine dedicated to younger readers. From 2006 to 2009, she produced a daily program on Radio France International named "Reines d'Afrique" (Africa's Queens).
In 2016, she wrote, "mon Royaume pour Une Guitare" (My Kingdom for a Guitar), a book mainly based on her parents' life and the musician's life of her father Francis Bebey.
