  • Francis Bebey (15 July 1929 in Douala, Cameroon - 28 May 2001 in Paris, France) was a Cameroonian artist, musician, poet and writer.Bebey released his first album in 1969. His music was primarily guitar-based, but he integrated traditional African instruments and synthesizers as well. His style merged Cameroonian makossa with classical guitar, jazz, and pop,[4] and was considered by critics to be groundbreaking, "intellectual, humorous, and profoundly sensual". He sang in Duala, English, and French.

Francis `Bebey is someone I return to for inspiration, for his wisdom, musicality and broad vision. I feel like he is from way before us, way beyond us and speaking directly to our hearts.. right NOW.

I first encountered him as a novelist and only later discovered his music. What a remarkable person. Would have loved to have known him.

Such a great musician, building a bridge from Brazil to Africa with nothing but a guitar!

Thanks for this, I only knew his second guitar album, "Concert pour un vieux masque". Before he recorded these, in the 50's, Bebey sometimes appeared at the "Club Plein Vent", 42 rue Descartes (Paris) - and maybe took classes there, don't know. But discovering these tunes, a little bird tells me he recycled a couple of patterns he had studied from Villa-Lobos pieces.

Interesting how some bits are really reminescent of « Guitares Dérives » by Le Masne and Porquet

Thank you very much for the work. This is amazing. Do you have his 1975 Guitare D'Une Autre Rime?

Bjr Francis a interpreté une chanson que je ne retrouve pas: Le tire devait être: Elle est trop longue la nuit Seigneur, ou encore Toi qui vit là haut. pouvez-vous me la trouver s'il vous plaît?
