  • Join us on an IFR flight into Chicago's Midway Airport (MDW). We get into the mix with the Southwest 737's. You'll get to hear some friendly air traffic banter and I re-set my night currency.

    I must thank you guys. Thank goodness for technology and GoPros and awesome folks like you to bring aviation to people like me that have disabilities that would not allow us to study aviation. My father was with United Airlines his entire career before he passed. As a child I had the opportunity to sit left seat from PITT to Beaver County. I have always had the heart of an aviator but not the visual abilities. Im blind in right eye and left eye is not the greatest and super night blind. I'd like to say its awesome to hear you guys as Controllers flying and the "art" of cockpit communications I can listen to you guys all day long. I used to feel so stuck wanting to fly so bad but knowing I cant but you guys bring it home for me. Thank you so much.

      Wow, thank you for the kind words Thomas! All we were looking for was to have fun and share our love of aviation with others. Hearing a story like this makes the cameras and editing well worth it! I'm sorry you weren't able to enjoy flight first hand with your medical issues but am so happy to have you journey with us. Thank you for sharing your story with us! We will continue to share our flight experiences with you. Lot's of fun trips planned for the year!

    Very nice. I learned to fly at Midway in the early 80's before it turned into the madhouse that is now. The view of the skyline from 04 is awesome, I have a framed 8x10 we took out the front of a 172 that's been hanging on my wall for 30 years now. Thanx for taking us along. Keep up the good work.

    I’ve watched and enjoyed all of your videos, thanks for sharing them. I enjoy your cockpit chatter and listening to ATC. Our radios are never as busy. A night flight in the Chicago area is quite the contrast to flying the plains of central Kansas after dark. I liked your night flight and I’m looking forward to seeing your new travels.

    Awesome video, Glad i can be apart of this channel. It's going places fast! I love these video's because when i was younger my step father was a charter pilot and he would use one of his friends 310's for our vacations. I miss the power of the 310 and the sound of those engines. I remember riding in the back to Chattanooga couldn't see over the dash but i'm forever hooked on 310s!

    Loved this flight. It reminded me of flying a172 from Peoria into Midway 4L at night with a Citation on my right wing for 4R. I did a touch and go onto Rockford. Another night flight into Meigs and blew a tire on landing. Service from from Midway was about 1 1/2 hrs. Loved Meigs! Wish we still had it!

    Great job on this one Kevin. The contrast between flight and being on the water (my trade) is interesting. Your screens seem very bright. On the water, dimming everything , helps to maintain night vision.

    • @310Pilot
      @310Pilot  Před 5 lety

      Glad you enjoyed it Karl! I try to keep things fairly dim to help with my eyes night vision to be able to see well outside the cockpit. I'm still fine tuning my night flying as some things are easily controlled, some are auto-dim and some are just how they are. That being said, I think the cameras made the electronics look brighter than they really were.

    Kevin, I know you try and nail a smooth landing everytime, but those are every now and then. It's like my FI told me once, Any landing you can walk away from is a good one. My FI was Retired Col. Arthur West. US Army Air Force, then later USAF. He was a flight instructor on a B-17G Mitchell. He gave me a B-17G flight manual before he passed away. Night flying is great. Done it many times. Enjoy it all while you guys are young. Talk about changes..Whew !!

    I love your videos, this night flight was beautiful but seemingly stressful.
    I fly out of Skyhaven airport but in Rochester N.H. I started watching your videos when I saw the New england videos.
    I'm currently rebuilding and flying a Phantom ultralight myself. Just need to heal and be cleared from a work injury. Your 310 is a beautiful aircraft; love the sound of the twin.
    There is a lighthouse in York Maine, its the Nubble light you would enjoy. You probably flew over it going up the Maine coast to Bar Harbor. I believe the restricted area in Kennebunkport was were the former President Bush lived. I'm randomly going through your videos, you have posted quite a few.

    So hard, in my view anyway, to judge you’re height above ground when they have those lights on full bright, In my case normally after passing the threshold my best judge of height is off my own landing light. New idea 💡, lightbulb icon no pun intended, is to install a remote dimmer switch into each cockpit 👍😎🇬🇧. It’s great for the big boys, but on GA a bit of a nightmare sometimes. Thanks again for another wonderful video. You’re good young lady did very well on comms, I’m assuming she doesn’t have a PPL so that’s even more impressive. Thanks again from England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

No reason to go that bright unless it's day IMC and it will help get the runway environment in sight. I should have said something. They probably just forgot they were that bright.

      Usually we try to coordinate with the tower for GA's to land the parallels and you could hear the SWA behind us ask tower if we were. I'm guessing it was closed for some reason? Many times when running visual approaches at night to MDW you can tell who is familiar and who is a first timer. It's tough to see blended in to the rest of all the lights!

Glad to get off and not cause a go-around as I was just playing around. :)

    WOW!!! Really great nighttime flight, Guys. At least that Southwest flight didn’t have to go around on the first landing. So, if you had gone full flaps on that landing, would you have made that Charlie cutoff? Even though the first landing wasn’t absolutely perfect, all the landing were really good, given it was nighttime. Those landing lights on that last landing WERE really bright. I can only imagine how bright they looked in the cockpit. Thanks for sharing another great flight. Look forward to the next one.

    • @310Pilot
      @310Pilot  Před 6 lety +1

      Really glad you like it Richard! The problem with the first turnoff he gave was I was keeping the speed up so much on final I was a bit hot. The flaps would have helped for sure and I may have been slow enough. The other problem was that exit, not being a high speed, didn't have lead off lights so it was hard to see. The one I took was a high speed and had the green lead off lights which made it much easier. Lot's more coming.

    Night flying for me will help me out a lot on my IFR rating but unfortunately weather conditions on cool nights with warmer air flows over water can become more difficult if the fog moves inland . You have a well lighted ForeFlight IPAD and other avionics on hand for backup if needed. That's why it's great that you both are safe flying a Muti engine aircraft at night is better than a single-Engine at night especially over mountains. One day I like to see some IMC practice approaches in and out of your home base Airport . God bless you both .

    • @310Pilot
      @310Pilot  Před 6 lety

      I agree, it is more comfortable at night, with wx and/or water involved to be in a twin. I also want to get out and shoot some more actual approaches in IMC. When the plane comes out of annual and the conditions are right (no ice/convection), I'll get that done and put it up.

    Loved Jamie’s comment about controllers talking ‘super-fast’. So hard to understand sometimes. If you hear a foreign accent (including English or Australian) please slow down a little. It takes us a while to pick up the accent and we’re not used to our own controllers talking faster than normal, everyday conversation. I can’t pick up Midway tower’s instructions on this and English is my first language...!

    • @310Pilot
      @310Pilot  Před 5 lety +2

      When I hear a foreign accent not only do I slow it down, I also break things up into smaller chunks. The US airliners that come in and out all the time you can pick up the tempo quite a bit and they get it all. Sometimes you don't have much time and those seconds can matter.

      @@310Pilot My VERY southern CFII who trained and drove P3 Orions for the Navy most of his life explained it well back when I was training. I asked what do I do if the tower is talking too fast to understand, particularly up north (or in the midwest) and he said "if your hear them blazing through instructions as you approach, make sure your first communication is in, as, slow, a, southern, drawl, as, possible. They don't penalize you for being from the south and will usually slow down the instructions to accommodate the backwater hick that somehow got his license." I've used that tactic only once. Worked like a charm.
