Icing Concerns Instrument Flight~Annual Inspection Drop-Off

  • It's time to take 1BC over to TAS Aviation in Defiance, Ohio (DFI) to get her annual inspection. I had some icing concerns on this flight with the surface temperatures below freezing but knew the clouds were relatively thin, the air was warmer above them and I'd be on top for the majority of the flight. I was able to get a climb straight through them on departure from Aurora Tower and Chicago Approach Control, cruise on top in the clear skies above and left the flaps/gear up for a high-speed approach to minimize my time in them on arrival. Single pilot IFR is serious business! Stay tuned for some of the annual inspection process.

This is an interesting lesson in air density. In this video, the call from 70,80,90 knots to rotation happens much faster than it does during videos that are shot during the summer. Gotta love that cold, dense air that is packed full of O2 molecules.

Always a pleasure to take a flight with ya Kevin. Especially like the way you talk about what is going on. I like clear on top and after 30 years of WI, completely relate. Especially now with Tucson blue bird all the time. It takes days instead of months for the doom of no sun to set in. I do think that sunset from a cockpit is better than clear on top though. Sorry, jmo

    Hi Kevin, how's Jaime?
Left early yesterday morning from Manassas Virginia, back home in Key West now.
So good to see mom and sis again, covid took that away from me last year, my annual fly up to check in with family.
Woke up to 37 degrees up there, home to 85 for a high in KW!
We'll be in touch, hope the annual goes well.

Also unbelievable how much you know, and know what to do and when, you're so incredibly good! (for me to say as aviation-lover but not a pilot)

From an "old" Georgia boy, former private pilot and, by the grace of God, Georgia Bulldog, I am totally impressed with your knowledge of flying and your flying ability. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that you truly love flying. Instead of breathing air, I am convinced that aviation fuel fumes is what sustains you. I am glad to have found your channel several months ago and it didn't hurt to have Jamie as your copilot. Good luck, and I will continue to follow future episodes.
