  • My 15 year old son got his twin-engine intro lesson flying our Cessna 310. Basic turns with minor altitude changes and he even flies his first RNAV approach!
    The 310 is in her last week of annual inspection and we have a fun trip planned down to Kentucky in two weeks. Stay tuned for our Kentucky Dam Fly-In trip!

    I really enjoyed this video, it reminded me of flying with my Dad back in the 1950s and 1960s in his Bonanzas, he would take off, then swing the yoke over to the right side and I would fly all over the place. He surprised me with my first official lesson in October, 1965,, about a month after my 14th birthday. I've been flying ever since! Carson did a nice job, not even much wing wagging, rare for somebody new to the controls of a 310. I have owned four 310s over the years, first a new 75 T310R, then a 69 Turbo P (only for 2 weeks, someone offered me a lot more than I paid for it), then a 60 D (13+ years), and now have a 59 C model, owned for aost 20 years now. They are great airplanes, As you know. Your Q model is very nice, glad to see you enjoying it so much. I hope Carson gets enthused about flying, you will both enjoy flying with each other. My Dad and I flew together for many years, I still miss having him in the cockpit with me. Good luck on your annual, hope there are no surprises - fortunately, the 310s are subject to relatively few ADs by comparison to most other twins. Looking forward to seeing your upcoming trip video!

      Glad you liked it James! Thank you for the story about flying with your dad. He had a lot of faith in you throwing the yoke over. :) I agree with you, Carson seemed to have a good touch with the yoke for his time. That really says something for the 310 that you like them so much you've had 4 of them. I miss flying with my dad as well, for some strange reason after a full life of flying he has given it up and has no interest to get in the air...with me or commercially. I'll carry on the family tradition with Carson though. So far no big surprises on the annual. I'll get it back in a few days hopefully nothing else comes up. Had a crack get repaired in one of the outboard exhaust and did the 500 hour on the left set of mags. So far we are loving this bird! Thanks for following along!

    You brought back some happy memories of when I was 13 years old. I was given a $ 5.00 bill for Christmas among a few other nice gifts from my parents. I took the subway to downtown Toronto, and went straight to the Island Airport (Now Billy Bishop Airport) You could go up on a sightseeing flight over most of Toronto for half an hour, and for ONLY $ 5.00. I hired a Cessna 150, and up we went on a freezing cold December 26th 1971. I wasn't nervous and had never been in any aircraft before. I absolutely loved it ! I went up another few times over the next few years. At that age it is just pure excitement ! I was so proud of myself !

    Kevin thanks for bringing back the memories of the right seat with my Dad 36 years ago when I was 15. It’s amazing the patience you see with father/son in the airplane. Some of the best times I spent (and still do) was/is with my Dad in the air. Albeit we waited a few years before stepping up to twins. I started at 6/7 with him holding the two brakes while he propped his Champ. We moved through the ranks 150,152, 172,182, V tail Bonanza, A36 Bonanza, twin Comanche and now B56 Baron. If he catches the bug you’ll know it. I look at my 17 year old daughter now and wonder how in the world he stood in the grass and watched me solo on my 16th Birthday. Brave Dad.

    Kevin. So glad to see the videos. I am an older guy and the 310 has always been my favorite airplane. Last time I saw one in person it was sitting in a field with grass growing all around just sitting there deteriorating. Made me sick. So it was awesome to see 1BC looking pristine. Thanks again for sharing. I enjoy watching. Don

      Glad you're enjoying the videos Don!! They sure did design a sexy airplane way back then...we love her. I hate seeing all the dying airplanes on ramps in the country. There is a 310 at DPA airport I drive past everyday tied down in the Chicago elements with flat tires and struts just rotting. We are replacing 1BC one part at a time. :)

    When I got my private ticket 10 years ago, my son (who is 21 now) always wanted to go with me. By the time he was 12, I didn't need an autopilot on my 172. After I took off, I could tell him the heading and enroute altitude and he would climb out and fly me right to the destination airport. He would stay right on the numbers. Now he's training and has already soloed.

    I have so many questions. Is that your own personal plane ? When flying from airport to airport where does the plane get put if you're away from it for a few days ? Is there a limit in which your plane can be at a different airport ? Where do you store your plane ? When refueling at a different airport, how does that work ? Do you pay for the fuel ?

    When I was 12 (13?) my dad arranged for a sightseeing flight for the family in a Cherokee Archer out of HMT. My old man, who was known to get queasy just looking at planes/boats rode the back seat like a pro while the pilot was gracious enough to let me take the controls for awhile, picking up the basics of flight. When the trim lesson was complete, I thought the old man was going to have a heart attack on the spot when we both took our hands off the yoke to demonstrate. I'd never been happier in my life, and the bug had bit hard. The rest, as they say..........

    Question? If you took off on Runway 27 ( 270 dead west) then the corresponding opposite Runway Direction would be 09 (90 dead east).
    Since the controller stated the winds were at 140, ( that would mean out of the South East right)?
    I was wondering why you wouldn't prefer to take off from the other end of the runway, 090, and take off more into the wind?

    • @310Pilot
      @310Pilot  Před 5 lety +1

      If the winds are less than 10 knots I will take off on the short taxi (27 in this case) with a runway that long. If it's a short runway or winds of 10 knots or more I will always opt for the headwind.

    I thought that was pretty funny about the "A Team". They didn't seem to be that busy! I used to fly around L.A. all the time; now that's busy! Those people probably can't wait till the end of their shift, especially with all the airport hopping that goes on there. Mis those days '80s and 90s.

      I was hoping to get a funny reaction from them but not so much. We have a close friend that is a controller there and she would have came back with something funny. 80's and 90's were still during the glory days of general aviation. I started in the late 90's and it's declined quite a bit since then.

A well trusted twin cessna guru says you have two controls for a reason...don't waste a ton of money trying to get them perfectly matched. I have digital fuel flow on my engine monitor that is very accurate (more than the stock gauge) and the fuel flows are always matched regardless of the old gauge or the levers. Maybe a flying club or a partnership on a single could get you back enjoying the air. The hard part of getting the ticket is behind you.
