    Tony & Chelsea Northrup review the AMAZING Panasonic Lumix GH6. 25 megapixels (the highest ever for a Micro Four-Thirds camera) with 100 megapixel handheld high-res mode that ACTUALLY WORKS and BLOWS AWAY full-frame cameras! Video at 4k/120 or 5.7K/60p… and it’s beautiful.
    But there’s a fatal flaw. The Panasonic Lumix GH6 uses the contrast-based Depth-from-Defocus (DFD) system… it often works flawlessly, in fact, for still interview subjects it outperformed Canon! With moving subjects, however, it either couldn’t keep up or it pulsed annoyingly.
    The GH6 has the most amazing stabilization system we’ve ever used. You can handhold shots and they look like you’re on a tripod. Seriously.
    So, will we switch to filming with the Panasonic GH6! I’m going to try it. I haven’t been able to use the camera for actual production because the footage was embargoed, but I will use it for our CZcams videos to give it a more long-term review. It’s that good!

    To the auto focus:
    I also have the GH5. I am totally amazed by the video quality. With her, however, I completely dispensed with the autofocus when filming after a few attempts.
    With the GH6 I get results similar to those in your review (10:40) when I switch to single-field focus with face or human recognition. But when I set the full-area focus with human detection, the autofocus is excellent. Overall, I only use face detection mode on portraits. If there is more of the person in the picture, or the person turns to the side, the face recognition mode doesn't suit me. Since I have good results with the human detection mode (Human). The face is also recognized. Your example shows me that reviewers either don't have enough time to delve deeply into a camera.
    Pumping in the autofocus is repeatedly complained about with the Panasonics, which is caused by the contrast autofocus. This pumping is quite noticeable for me with the GH5 when the filmed person is not moving much. Then it's more noticeable because you can concentrate more on the background, which should actually be constantly out of focus with larger aperture openings. When I set the AF speed to -2 and the AF sensitivity to -3 in the Custom AF settings (Vid) menu on the GH6, I have had very consistently good results in conjunction with human detection in full-area focus.
    I hope I could be of some help.
    Many greetings
    Andreas

      Same here! I'm using it on the GH5. The extra wide angle compared to the 12-35 and better low light capability make it perfect for my usage which is filming rock climbing. Since it's a very slow paced sport even the GH5 autofocus works good enough for me on that lens

  • @TedTremendous

    I wonder how many of your viewers really rely on autofocus? Be nice to have a poll.
    For commercial projects, I usually lock focus on manual; all projects are interviews of some kind and all settings are dialed in for the shoot bc auto just messes up too often. GH5 was always solid in the past and expect the GH6 to be even better. Audio is massive and GH5/6 has some amazing audio options with XLR or we use external audio. I think most basic vloggers will get a Sony.
    As with the GH5, there will be plenty of people who buy it and realize it has too many options and buttons and is too complicated bc it is for Pros, not semi pros, not casual filmmakers but pros doing real work and they always make cameras for those people. The Panasonic ppl at the launch event seemed to chuckly a little bit at the overwhelming comments about autofocus but I think that is blown way out of proportion by CZcamsrs vs real world get it done camera ppl in commercial space that always figure out ways around it or know every square inch of what their gear can do and plan for that.
    Overall, I think your review focused (pardon the pun) way too much on autofocus and not nearly enough on all the other amazing features of the camera and who this is really designed for. Which are pro users who know how to use manual focus and how to film. Granted it is nice when things just work and I hope that Lumix fixes this moving forward but I don't see it as the kiss of death your video makes it out to be. - thx

      I think it still falls within a price range where people, who still work alone, might be interested in it. Especially blogger, vlogger style of content creators. Autofocus is very important if you don't have a camera man to film. If you operate the camera and are in the shot, then autofocus is very important. For me this camera is probably just below what professionals would use, so the people mostly interested in video cams in that price range are slightly more serious content creators, but who are still a bit off of having pro equipment. You don't use autofocus all the time, but there are enough of situations where you want good autofocus. The real issue is that you cannot rely on it, and that is a huge negative even if you only very rarely need it. For me the bad autofocus would automatically be a hard reason to avoid the cam

      @JamesWilliams-rw6qc Před 2 lety +3

      I think it's very nuanced I've been a professional videographer for about 13/14 years generally running 1-5 sized teams, so it's either been me as a one-man band or a team when the clients budget or the situation requires it. When I started it was only manual, the autofocus was rubbish plus the sensors were so small it was difficult to get any shallow depth of field anyway, so you just locked it in manual and forgot. I tend to still do that with my b cam as due to the difference in angle the interviewee is likely to be constrained to the same focal plane so I can lock off the shot and still have a good shallow depth of field (plus as its a B-Cam I don't have to worry as much). The Sony's have shown you can leave a camera on autofocus and rely on it, I never go ultra-shallow as it's distracting (and more likely to mess up), hence why for most applications MFT is perfectly fine, but the autofocus isn't good enough with Panasonic (possibly is with the OM-1).
      For me having reliable autofocus when doing the filming means I can sit opposite the interviewee, let the camera roll and make sure I'm getting the best out of the interviewee (as they can be nervous, especially as they've just talking to a stranger behind the camera, I also have my other senses to spot distractions and mistakes easier, of course, better to have another camera operator and sound operator to ensure it's going well, but sometimes the budget doesn't fit. That's why I have a Sony as well as my MFT cameras. Although I do have pro camcorders, they are not great for the one-man-band when you've also got all the lighting and sound equipment to bring with you, that's why a love the MFT system for more options for my style of work.

I think there are more viewers that are already invested in m43 lenses who ask themselves to go with one of the two than there are who consider going from Canon to Lumix. I am inclined to believe that the OM1 high-res would be quite close to the GH6 - and with better autofocus. What do you think Tony and Chelsea? And is there a reason for the rather cool review of OM1, then the hot review of GH6? Strange, would be great to have your view?

    Nice to see the review in 4K @ 60fps and so getting the best out of the sample footage from the GH6, the lens stabilisation and that smoothness was really impressive . The mock interview, the colour looked a lot nicer on the GH6 compared to the Cannon, although not sure if it was the most accurate to real-life with not having been there in person. The hunting autofocus is basically how contrast detection works and to reaffirm it's in focus it has to "wobble" the focus to see if contrast improves in order to know it is still focused. If it detects contrast dropping, its a toss of a coin if it focuses first in the correct direction so giving a more obvious hunting, although depth from defocus is suppose to take away that guess work, it only works with Panasonic lenses I think, but still isn't going to be 100% reliable. Face detection can be unreliable if the lens is focused on the background and so a persons face close to the lens may be too out of focus for the camera to see it's a face, so it can get stuck focused on a contrasty background. Until Panasonic move away from contrast based focusing, all the same issues are going to remain.

      Phones or action cams and high end film cameras and full frame slr:s make sense to me. Maybe smaller sensor slr:s for 300+mm lenses and wildlife. I brought my m43 to a trip recently and didnt use it once, used my phone for everything.
      My point is, no matter what features they have all small consumer slr:s do in essence what phones do. Small sensor, bad in low light, same image characteristics. Nothing really happens imagewise until you go to something like the old canon 5d. And if you want that quality in video plus all the features - af, ibis and so on, it will cost.
      That doesn't mean m43 etc is bad, it's just that phones improved so much they're doing to video capable slr:s what they did to compact still cameras a decade+ ago. The ergonomics of a phone is annoying, i'd love the iphone 13 pro cameras in a dedicated super small device like an osmo action cam.

I've shot with just about every Panasonic camera since the DVX-100, including the EVA-1. My first video camera was a pixel vision camera from fisher price and my introduction to film was on actual film (16mm) so autofocus was never a thing. The solution is to use a shutter-remote to lock in focus if you want to have perfect focus while v-logging with GH6. I think the GH6 opens the door for greatness creations for a fraction of the price of high end cameras. It even gives a sense of film look quality but different.

    the GH6 never fails to lock on focus on me in vlogging style video, i've done some test with full area(face/eye detection) and it's beautifully handled, the only possible reason it missed focus completely in your case, is maybe you unintentionally touched the LCD screen and selected a spot to focus on instead of the human subject itself, or you left it on center focus or spot focus which will very likely fail when you are not perfectly in the center of the frame.

    Okay, this was a nice video, but I do have a few points to raise that might influence some people interested in either the GH6 or R6.
    Firstly, I've never seen my R6 autofocus do what yours did in a straight interview situation... Nor my R5 or C70. It can wobble occasionally when tracking an object, but if its got the face locked on in a static well lit scenario, it pretty much never misses.
    Also the colours looked really different in the comparison to such an extent that it makes me feel the white balance was off on one of the cameras, so I'd urge people not judge either camera on that.
    My previous GH5 and GH5S cameras had colours that looked a bit different to Canon, but not to anything like that degree.
    Overall though, the GH6 does look tempting and I love the way Panasonic cameras operate... but the autofocus is still a turn off, and if they were suggesting that phase detection would've been in the camera if its development started later, then I'd be inclined to wait and see what the successor to the S1H looks like.... that could be very interesting.

    Tony, nice and balanced review. I think Panasonic really missed a huge opportunity with sticking to the contrast detect DFD technology. GH6 could easily be one of the best affordable video cameras with implementing combined phase and contrast detection autofocus technologies. I know that you had in the past and liked very much the Olympus EM5II and EM1, I learned from your videos and book a lot, thanks for this. You should really check and give a chance to the recently announced Olympus OM-1 with the new Sony 20MP backside-illuminated quad pixel stacked CMOS sensor. It is most likely the first camera with quad pixel stacked sensor. It has 1053 focus points with 100% sensor coverage. It can shoot 50 fps in continuous auto-focus mode with electronic shutter compared to 7 fps of GH6. The low light noise performance and dynamic range are also significantly improved. With a sharp Olympus pro lens in hand-held or tripod (50 and 80 Mp) high resolution mode it will blow out of the water the Canon R6, maybe even R5, and the picture quality is close to the Sony A7RIV used on a tripod. The only difference is that with a stabilized Olympus lens (e.g 12-100 f4 pro) you can easily handhold it for several seconds (even at 100 mm), which is impossible with Sony A7RIV with any Sony or Zeiss lenses (including the stabilized ones). I rarely can get perfectly sharp results on A7RIV handheld even at 0.2-0.3 sec with the 35 mm f1.4 or stabilized 24-100 f4 at 35 mm. The new EVF in OM-1 is also very good and superior to the EVF in GH6. It is similar to the EVF in Sony A7RIV with faster refresh rate. The IBIS, sensor and processing speed in OM-1 is so good that you can now do live composite and live ND up to 6-stops handheld. OM-1 is probably the last result of the Olympus R&D. It represents the best from EM1III and EM1-X with an amazing new sensor, much faster processor, improved computation imaging, 5.76 million dot OLED EVF with fast refresh rate, improved resolution screen, and redesigned menu system. The video features are also largely improved (DCI/UHD 4K up to 60p 10-Bit; full HD up to 240 fs) with a very good auto-focus and IBIS. I am seriously thinking on getting rid of my Sony A7III, A7RIV, A7IV and all lenses and sticking with the M43. With implementing computational photography, which is the future, M43 has a potential to catch up with the full frame very soon. The improved image quality of GH6 in video is also largely due to computational image processing (it is averaging 2 images with different gains/frame in "dynamic range boost" mode). This may result in cleaner video of GH6 at relatively high ISOs than of A7SIII until the dual ISO of A7SIII sensor kicks in, where the GH6 gets left behind (see Potato Jet's very comprehensive video of GH6 video features).

      @@VirtuosityToniLekic Not yet, only in high resolution mode which is limited to still objects at the moment. However, if computational imaging is able to compensate for movements in high resolution mode, which will inevitably happen, this may change the game. This technology is already in part implemented in top smart phones which have very powerful and energy efficient CPUs, unlike cameras with CPUs from the stone age....the sensor technology is already almost there (the new Sony sensor in OM1 with single auto-focus can read 120 fps in RAW; the GH6 sensor without autofocus 300 fps). In hand held high res mode OM1-combines 16 images, GH6 8 images. I like traveling and taking night pictures of cities without carrying a large tripod. Try to get sharp pictures with sigma 105 mm or Sony 70-200 mm f2.8 at 200 mm handheld with Sony A7RIV at f8-f10 during the night without raising the ISO above 12,800. My threshold for noise on Sony A7R4 is below ISO 3200, at 12,800 and above the pictures look horrible. I can easily handhold the old Olympus EM1III with 12-100 mm lens (equivalent to 24-200 full frame) with 7.5 stops of stabilization at 100(200) mm using baseline ISO at nigh, resulting in much better image even at 20Mp than the ones taken with Sony A7RIV. If nothing is moving with handheld high resolution mode I can get even higher resolution images with much less noise and increased dynamic range. Of course if you have a tripod and time the 4x larger sensor is superior, this is simple physics. But traveling with several huge G master quality full frame lenses, which can resolve the 61Mp Sony sensor, and a tripod and walking 10-20 miles/day is really not fun and can be painful (for your back/neck).

    So if you need AF get a Canon or Sony. If video quality is more important get GH6? So... Not a Micro 4/3 vs Full frame issue? How about cost of and availability of M4/3 lens vs equivalent full frame glass? What would the total cost of a video setup cost, including monitors and audio setup? I feel that we need a more in-depth look at the total cost of ownership before I can make an informed decision.

    If you manual focus, no wobble. I hope some new users understand. It's like using auto iso on videos, then complain the exposure is constantly changing. Auto anything you give up control as well.

      100%. I absolutely would not trust autofocus unless it's a project I didn't care about. Imagine Roger Deakins relying on Canon autofocus to shoot a feature. Ha ha ha.

    Forgive my ignorance but why are the Olympus cameras never considered as a viable option for video work with their superior autofocus? What about the OM-1? Are the improvements not video focused enough to recommend even with vastly superior autofocus?
    I get that the flexibility in settings, bit rates, zebra stripes etc on the Panasonic models but as Tony said if autofocus is bad it ruins the shot.

    • @TechnoBabble
      @TechnoBabble Před 2 lety

      It just depends on what you need. I would say go Olympus if you want autofocus and the best stabilization but image quality can take a back seat. If you want the best image quality on M4/3 for a production environment and you can manually focus than the GH6 is going to be much better and be easier to use in said production environment.

    They held nothing back...except the AF, an absolutely essential aspect of handheld cameras. Considering the intended video use, that's beyond absurd. Cine cameras are manual too, but they are meant to be operated at least two people, one being the focus puller.

    Great review. I realize this video is about a year old, but here is my dilemma. I own a D850 with many Nikon lenses and considered buying the GH6 for primarily its excellent video abilities, internal stabilization, etc…. but now the Z8 has entered the ring and has internal stabilization combined with autofocus in high res video that the D850 cannot even come close to. So as the GH6 is almost the same price as the difference in price between selling my D850 and buying the Z8 is it a no brainer to just sell the D850 and buy the Z8? It would also essentially make all of my existing lenses “stabilized” with the internal stabilization of the Z8. Thanks for your input👍

    10:30 When using a lens that has IS with the R6, the IS switch on the lens controls both lens IS and IBIS. There isn't a way to separate them, so those shots are with zero stabilization. IBIS itself is only controllable in the menus when using a lens without IS. No clue why Canon does that.
    Other than that, very good review, and good to see MFT still going.

      @TechnoBabble Před 2 lety +6

      @@TonyAndChelsea that lens has OIS and the R6 does not allow you to independently disable IBIS and OIS, it's all or nothing. So you were recording with no stabilization.

    • @MegaWeitzel
      @MegaWeitzel Před 2 lety

      It's the same for Sony. If you disable lens IS you also disable IBIS. I guess it is to make the switch more convenient as an all/nothing switch instead of you having to adjust two things.

    Panasonic really needs to release a successor of the Zs60/70/80 with this new handheld multi frame noise reduction high resolution raw file mode. This could be extremely useful in not so good light conditions. There's no compact camera (including smartphones, I compared it with a Pixel 6 Pro, which was much worse regarding distant objects) that can compete with the angular resolution of a travel zoom camera like the Zs60 at 720mm. For example, I tested that the Zs60 has a better angular resolution than a Canon M50 + Ef-s 55-250mm STM lens. A Zs70 also delivers better image quality than the more expensive Zs200 at 720mm. A camera like the Zs60 is super useful for birds (one nearly always needs at least 720mm for birds), I can carry it in my jacket and don't even notice it.

    Olympus/OM has a much better auto focus, is there a reason you didn't mention it as a possible alternative? Is there something the OM-1 can't do that you feel strongly enough makes it unviable for video?

    That low light and stabe is incredible for M43. I've learnt to not even trust Sony AF in low light so I mainly keep my cameras in MF so this has got me thinking. I've not owned a Pany since the GH3 era and ironically the only reason I sold that was the AF. Really top notch review both! I remember giving you a bit of stick for your M43 is dead video so when saw this I was expecting to say I told you so but the way you handled the video I only really have praise.
