  • The arrival of Lumix G9 Mark II signals the death of Panasonic's infamous DFD autofocus system and the future GH7 would most definitely be featuring hybrid PDAF. But as a photographer who don't need the fastest CAF to shoot, would GH6 makes a good case (and a good buy) in 2023? Especially for its current heavily discounted price tag. Here's my take after using it for three months of pro shoots and how it compares (briefly with my OM-1, don't worry, I will be doing more comparison in due course). #photography #microfourthirds #gh6

    The GH6 is a great camera. It’s a big camera for stills, even compared to most full frame bodies. That size helps a ton for video with the boxier feel and fan which adds a lot of that size. Looking forward to your comparison with the G9 II and OM1! Thanks for your videos Jimmy, I’ve subscribed!

    Cmon guys, em1x, gh5s and gh6 user here. The
    Gh6 requires good glass ie. Nocticron or even the 75mm 1.8 Oly. Gh6 has internal raw. Prores 422 is simply awesome. It has Ibis as well with moderate autofocus. In comparison to the bmpcc 4k. This is a W camera. It has almost the same low light capablities as the gh5s but with DR mode on. Its beefy yes and it looks professional. Disregard the small sensor, the pixels look more detailed in comparison to full frame on social media. Open gate is awesome. Like I said this sensor needs top notch glass to get stellar results. Otherwise dont even bother. If you want things to look more cinematic get a cinema lens with good roll offs that dont look sharp. Speedbooster definitely helps. We cant be getting all techy here and forget what real filming and photography is like. You can get professional results and even better than full frame users if you know what youre doing

      Well talking about glass, I think it applies to most cameras.
      I use a GH4 and I was astounded by the quality of footage I could get from it when using better than average lenses.
      I'm sure the quality would even have been better with premium lenses.

    Insightful and valid comments from the perspective of someone who does really put these cameras through the stresses of professional work. However, I suspect that most people who have GH6 type of money to spend on a new M43 camera body will be looking at the G9ii, or the OM1.

    Just checked the specs of both the S5II and G9II both still offer DFD in S-AF. Only difference is that C-AF uses phase-detect. S-AF will be at least as good as the previous generation.

      The G9 still has more options for taking photos but I like the images better on the GH6. The extra resolution is sharper.
      I took a handheld night shot of the Saint Charles Bridge in Prague and it turned out wonderful. I ran it through Topaz AI cleaning up the noise and increased the resolution even more and it looks great. I would say that this new software is a game changer.

      @@edwardekman9832 That's interesting!
      I'm torn between the G9 and the GH6.
      I currently own a GH4.
      I predominantly do video ads and cover weddings and run a CZcams channel on the side, but I have been having a lot more clients for photography and the GH4 doesn't just cut it very well for photography. I love that the GH4 can still shoot 4k ALL-I at 200mbps. I feel buying a GH6 might mean I'm going all in for video interests alone since I already have a GH4.
      The specs of the GH6 are however very tempting, but the G9 is cheaper - and there lies the dilemma. Thought I could do some future proofing with the GH6, but the G9 still looks like it might still be well suited as a capable hybrid camera even in a few years to come.

    The GH6 with their new 25Mpx with dual Gain took Panasonic to develop so that is the basic sensor for the next 5 years in the Pana m43. I was very curious how Panasonic will introduce a new photo centric m43 using this same sensor, as many users noticed worse dynamic range and iso invariance under IS0 800 then previous camera. I was sure that the new G9II will get this improved 25Mpx with PDAF. With the new G9 they enhanced the dual gain fixing the streaking issu, better iso invariance and dynamic range. Richard Wong showed that that the G9II sensor is equivalent the APS-C sensor from Fuji, Canon and Sony. So it seems Panasonic rushed the GH6 to the market after being 5 years still in the m43 marketdue to their focus on the L Mount.

    Friend, please conduct an honest stabilization test on the Panasonic G9ii vs OM-1, could you film a person walking at a calm pace along the street, while you yourself would not walk at a goose pace, but at a regular pace, I wonder who will be better? at focal length 12mm 35mm! I'm tired of looking for fair comparisons!

  • @RobShootPhotos
    @RobShootPhotos Před 8 měsíci +1

    This is in regards to Wildlife and buffering. One thing that baffles me about OM-SYSTEMS is the buffer size. The E-M1 II, III, E-M5 III and OM-5 has a 149 frame buffer. Did they not double check specs before building the OM-1? I usually only at max shoot about 20fps with those cameras and maybe a two second burst but never have a slow down of waiting for it to clear the buffer between bursts. I would probably just shoot at 25fps on the OM-1 but I'm at a higher chance of the camera filling the buffer and slowing me down with the decreased size of buffer. If they would have just matched the 149 frame buffer, I still would not notice an issue.

    • @jonathanscherer8567
      @jonathanscherer8567 Před 8 měsíci +1

      It is a curious feature for sure. I guess 90 photos in 1.5 sec was all they thought anyone would need? 25fps would be 3 sec. Maybe flash was expensive at that moment, as happened sometimes back during the time period when the OM-1 came out. Supply chain issues really impacted the tech market. Still, for a $2,200 USD (at launch) camera, you'd think they could've given it a 180 photo buffer.

    I Use Gh6 for video and Om-1 for stills. Yesterday I was using both with Om 150-400mm and often the 2x tele in poor light for bird photography in the early morning on a bean bag so minimal camera shake, but still some. The OM-1 won for stills with IS and AF working better (But bird AI failed in low light with 2x tele making it f11 aperture) with sharp shots down to 60th second wat 200mm equivalent, but GH^ just blows it away for video, even at just simple implementation level (cant even set video as a custom mode on OM1!) level and quality was amazing even in poor light and higher ISO.
    G9 mkii looks like OM-1 may be in threatened for its is best for photo title though, except IS will work better with OM/Oly lenses still I suspect

    Well, I agree its a good camera. And a flagship for video.
    But! I want OM SYSTEM to evolve and make a 25 mp videocentric camera in pro level, and I want it to be called OM-2.
    Why, because I want OM SYSTEM to survive as a brand. I do so far use my OM-1 and also the Sony 7R3 at work for video, and I don't need better. I do most photo.
    What I really lack though, is a digitalizing mode to digitalize all hundreds of thousands negatives and paper photos I have at my museum. I want a camera with 1. negative to positive raw edit in camera. 2. Focus measuring to check if camera is in perfect line with the distance to all four corners. 3. Focus stacking raw with 4 photos in very close stacking for bent negatives and photos 4. High res raw combined with the fucus stacking raw.
    That could all be a firmware update to one of my OM-1, OM-5, EM-1iii.
    The 4/3 sensor size is perfect for digitalizing photos. What is bad is I lack negative to raw and difficulty to get the focus perfect in all corners at small negatives.
    Please talk to OM SYSTEM about implementing that function. Museums around the world are starting digitalizing old negatives now.

    Long time MFT user here. The saddest part about GH6 is that Panasonic betrayed everyone who bought it on release by swearing that they won't implement PDAF in future camera models "to protect image quality". Imagine the surprise when s5 ii with PDAF came out. I still feel bitter about it.
    Nevertheless, GH6 is great, g9 ii is obviously better. Also, GH6 streaking issue is still not fixed. Just try the bracketing mode and shoot the moon after blue hour has passed, happens everytime.

    I like your approach and expertise Jimmy but think in this case, just like in the upcoming G9 II, James Popsys has already got the point. The MFT flagship camera's have become too big and heavy. The G9 II now has the same enclosure of the S5/II/IIx with the ff sensor. It defeats the purpose. You would think that the makers would go on producing the parallel, smaller MFT models, but no. Back in the times of GH2-4 and G7/G85 it was different, but starting with GH5 all is chunky and heavy. Sony knew what it was doing both with its APSC and the FF line-up.
