AF conclusion: -cats are easy to track, crazy fast birds right above my head are hard to track, more test awaits before definitive conclusion on its performance.
Note that i was shooting in full area mode with detection, with one area mode it will perform better.
-Just tested on tennis court with olympus 40-150 f2.8, nearly perfect focus especially using zone or 1 area mode, huge improvement from Gh6. (photo AF)
-After doing a project for a tennis player show reel i'm glad to report that it does an impeccable job in video AF as well, at least on tennis court.
Do you literally mean it just has trouble tracking fast birds right above you? From the bird pictures in your review it seems to do well. I am very curious about the definitive conclusion on the autofocus.
@@mi9se253 hi, i cherry picked the best shots from that particular shoot, i was there standing on a bridge trying to track the gulls swooshing in circles very close to the ground level, it's not like there's only 1 bird, there were dozens, and it gets confusing once they all start flying around, it's hard to physically keep track of their movement with naked eyes let alone when having the camera up to my eye with 80-300mm focal length lens. I got a lot of bad shots which obviously didn't show, but i think if i had used zone focus or one area focus mode i would have gotten much better result, i was using full area focus mode and it was just too confusing for the camera.
overall the autofocus is so much better than any previous lumix mft cameras, but as i said in the video it's still early, we are only 1 month into the release of the camera, we'll see more definitive conclusion in near future.
@@AiurMedia Thanks a lot for the reply!
Proud Lumix user since 2008! Never looked back. So sorry for all those toxic haters... Great video dude.
A honest review and you shared quite a few of my opinions upon using my new G9ii. You got my subscription man 🙌🏼
I was waiting for your review for so so long!!! I love your way of reviewing camera and lenses...
thank you!
I used the G9II in video a lot last week and what I found is the auto white balance is not as good as on the GH6. Most of the time, it is too cold. When using the accurate white balance and when lowering the red saturation as well as adjusting a bit the greens and yellows tint, the colors are much more pleasant and close to the GH6.
I love the sensor in both the GH6 and G9II, colors and overall rendering is insanely good. It is hard for me to use my S5II for video now.
I am pleased to hear this, as I have just bought a G9 II over the S5 II. I already have an S5 and feel the GH5 needs an upgrade. Recently I found that it does 4K 60, but only in 8 bit colour, which personally I don't like the look of 8 bit. Can't wait to use mine. I just wish more people had uploaded user tests with speedbooster adapted lenses, as I hear currently it isn't any good with the Sigma 18-35 in particular :(
Those photos were outstanding: muted and understated. They looked timeless.
I got the s5ii, but had this come out first - I'd probably be shooting on it instead. I love my s5ii and I'm glad I have it - but the g9ii does everything I need as well, cheaper and with lighter lenses. Just a little less low-light ability.
Your videos are always factual and straight to the point. I subscribe to many photography related channels, but I don't even watch their videos most of the time when they pop up on my subscription feed, because I don't really trust their reviews and they also waste a lot of my time talking about sponsors and other irrelevant stuff to artificially lengthen their video for the algorithm. On the contrary, I'm always excited to see your uploads. Keep up the good work. I want to see more G9II content. Especially more tests with autofocus performance. I think that's what most people care about anyways, since it is the most significant change over the original G9.
Thank you very much, i dont have much personality to sell so i indeed try to get straight to the point in my video, thank you, your comment is the reason i strive to make better and better videos.
@@AiurMedia it's great. Personality CZcamsrs are more for entertainment. A different crowd I guess. Some are on this platform for entertainment. Some are here just to learn or to look for answers. Channels like yours are great for the latter.
Thanks for your insights. Appreciated.
I have a G9 and a Canon 5DIII
The G9, while a great camera, just didn’t match the vibrancy and depth/ richness of FF.
I had expected the S5II/X to be my next camera. I even purchased a LUMIX 50mm F1.8 in anticipation. When the G9II was released I saw the reviews and thought it looked better than the G9 but there were a few reviews that concluded that one should still choose the S5II/X over the G9II, in part because that is ‘where the market is heading’.
I’m starting to change my mind. Why? First, reviews by you and a few others are showing that the video footage and photos from the G9II in real life are fantastic. Side by side comparisons are showing its is now very close to FF, and if one ensures the right lenses are used and appropriate post processing is applied, the gap is negligible.
I actually find myself preferring G9II footage over S5II in some instances (which was never the case with the G9).
Second, weight and size. On a recent overseas trip I packed my G9 and 5 lenses in a small bag with the kit weighing 1.75kg, and covering 20-600mm FF equivalent. (My EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS alone weighs 1.58kg.) I loved the size and relative discreteness of the system.
So now I need to wait for the G9II prices to drop a touch as it is 2.5x the price of a new G9 (clearance stock) and the S5II sold in 2 lens kits is about half the ‘body only’ G9II price (not a fair comparison I know, but hopefully Black Friday G9II kits will be a great deal).
But then again, maybe I’ll get a S5II one day too! Both are awesome.
I have v90 and v60, and I test 75fps with both card. The writing speed is exactly same around 30-31 second. So do not waste money on v90. This camera does not need v90 card period. Even v60 can record 600mbps code. The 800mbps one netiher does v90 can do. It require ssd recording. Whoever recomend v90 card for this camera from my opinion is just want to make more money from affiliate link. There is literally no benefit using v90 sd card for this camera.
cool, thanks for the info!
Do you know if the OM-1 has the same problem?
@@HokKan I do not know. I only have G9II.
g9 ii has 75 fps? i thought only gh6 has it.
And this is where the GH6 comes in.
Exactly my finding so far about AF.
Like you I sold my GH6, but I just hope I will not regret it, I used the GH6 a lot ! I loved the colors of this camera.
For now I think the colors of the G9II look slightly different, perhaps more saturated, skin tones are not as nice, but I need to test more.
Also the IBIS, while very good, looks a bit worse than the GH6, G9 and S5II when using wide angle lenses, using Electronic stabilization helps a lot, but I don't like the crop.
Great video...coming from the G9 I also noticed a few differences in the grip...its not as deep and the rubber is different...not as comfortable. YES use the V90s they will make a difference for speed.
Great video, I especially love the cat and night photos! I have a GH5s for now but would love to upgrade to the G9ii when it comes down in price on the used market. I've gotten used to manual focus but it's still such a hassle sometimes compared to just having reliable autofocus. No hate meant, but I do agree with the other comment that 24p looks bad on youtube lol. I've always questioned why people prefer it to 30p. Most youtube videos I see using 24p I'm like: "is my computer lagging wtf? oh wait no they are just using 24p." Then 50/60p looks too smooth unless it's an action scene, sports, or similar.
Since i mainly make photo showcase video i will try higher fps next time, thanks for the feedback!
I like your photos, did you apply any presets or just do basic lightroom adjustments?
Nice honest review…some things may improve as you become more experienced with the camera as well. Even with the great stab I don’t think you should walk and record with it very much…that’s best left for action cameras or gimbals IMO.
No harm and no shame in trying to grow a channel. You should at least include "Panasonic" or "Lumix" in your titles. I've been searching for Panasonic G9 II videos sorted by time uploaded since its re;ease, and yours doesn't show up. I only saw it because of a link from the m43 subreddit.
Thanks for the review. Regarding the card speed, I think Panasonic have repeated what they did with the original G9, they've cheaped out on the data bus again. The original G9, although UHS2 compatible, split one data bus between the two card slots. My EM1X writes much more quickly to the card than my G9. I got the 1X for it's AF performance, but the whole camera is noticeably faster and more responsive. I prefer everything (ergonomics, grip, menu, EVF etc..) about the G9 over the 1X but for action BIF etc, they are not even close and from the sounds of it, Panasonic haven't mastered fast AF tracking of the new hardware yet. I think I'll stay with my two camera set up for now. Panasonic have a good track record of substantial firmware upgrades, let's see.
yeah GH6 and G9II both a bit sluggish, takes a while to turn on the camera to begin with..
Did you color edit your photos or are those photos straight out of the camera? I really like the colors
Hi, i edited all my photos in lightroom, sometimes using auto setting sometimes using some presets
I think I still prefer the grip on the GH6. And I wish they left the flippy screen up down tilt thingy too.
How is the battery life compared with your previous GH6 though?
Yeah i miss the screen on gh6 too, they could make it happen without making it bulky but no, oh well. Grip was deeper on gh6, definitely more comfortable. Battery life is pretty good, today i walked around taking 200+ photos in 2 hours, came home with still some juice left in single battery.
@@AiurMedia Do you think the battery on the G9II is better than the GH6?
@@daytadsame battery, less demanding body, i'd say its etter on g9ii but havent tested.
@@MyLifeFrAiurGaming Alright. Thank you.
How have you been finding video auto focus since this review? Overall I like the camera a lot, but I do find some flickering happens in even moderately challenging light.
video autofocus is great, haven't noticed any flickering
@@AiurMedia that's great to hear!
Reference to your seagull shots...did you adjust the focus settings in the camera....1,2,3 or 4...should have been on setting #3.
i think i left it on default settings, full area mode, probably would get better result with one area or zone mode but again it is very hard to physically track the birds in such close distance to begin with, half of the time it's not the machine not keeping up but me not being able to follow the bird with my camera.
I post photos on twitter regularly if you want to check out G9II photos without waiting for the next video twitter.com/MyLifeFrAiur
Does the G9 ii also have red REC light in the front?
no it doesn't, it has only red frame on monitor during recording
I have read a lot of reviews about the autofocus of the g9ii and I dare to say that you probably have not used it correctly. In the few reviews that were not very positive, it turned out that after more experience using the camera, the review was changed to the positive side with the right use explanation..Try it..😊
Im just trying to report whatever quirks i can find in the new autofocus, not being negative, it goes without saying that the implementation of pdaf itself is a mega positive already, more praise words is not gonna help people understand how it actually is, also we need to hold pdaf up to a higher standard nowadays.
