    I'll finally upgrade from the GH4. This is what I've been waiting for. I don't give a damn about full frame. It's too big, too heavy, too expensive, too noticeable and too intrusive for what I need to do. I don't want to be noticed when working. I want to be perceived as a tourist or an amateur, so I can fly under the radar and get the images I want to make, or the video I want to use. I'll gladly trade the attributes of the full frame systems for what Lumix put into the GH6. It isn't perfect. Nothing is. But it is a huge improvement on what''s come before. I like to think about the story I'm telling, not the technology I'm fighting. Panasonic's interfaces (menu and hardware) just work. They're like Macs and Toyotas. Everything is where it makes sense to find it.

    Great review as usual! One thing I would add is for some of us, smaller lens size of M4/3 is also a big deal. For example, I shoot in South Africa every so often and am an older guy who doesn't care to haul around a ton of heavy, bulky lenses. When in South Africa, I shoot in townships where a large big name brand camera says "steal me". Not so much with a Pan M4/3 camera.

    I'm a pretty happy GH5 user since almost 5 years and this is really a huge step up. Since I'm using the camera a lot while traveling by bicycle, I need a small setup with small lenses and equipment that fits on the bike. IBIS is extremely important to me. But even more, I think the Panasonic has the perfect user interface to get things done and avoid stupid mistakes that ruins shots that can't be reproduced. The GH5-II has already a lot of improvements over the GH5 in this area and the GH6 is even better. So for me it looks like a no brainer.

    • @Fbnt1
      @Fbnt1 Před 2 lety

      I want to VLOG & use the camera also for beautiful travel nature scenaries. So do you think the GH6 would be the right pick for me? I am very curious about the autofocus. So I struggle with my decision a lot, if GH6 or Sony a7IV. What do you think?

    • @Ulrich.Bierwisch
      @Ulrich.Bierwisch Před 2 lety +1

      @@Fbnt1 I think for travel with landscapes and cities, the AF is good enough. I film a lot like I take a picture that are moving. Larger DOF, AF-S and holding steady or following an object into a pan move. If you want to show your face with blurry background a lot, there might be a problem but I'm not sure about that. I saw videos with heavy vibrating AF and I saw videos without it. I usually set the AF to very slow because I want slow AF-movements like a manual focus puller would do it. Even the GH5 isn't that bad in this area. If you want to focus on birds in flight, running dogs or fast moving sports, the AF isn't that good.
      Sony's AF is way better for everything that moves faster but the good lenses are heavy and expensive and the video features are not that good. The GH6 4k120p is great and up to FHD 300p is also great. All with 10bit and without crop (or with crop if you want the additional reach). SO it depends on you needs.
      As a cyclist, I have an action cam or an 360° cam for filming myself and fast action. This is on a completely different level of stabilization and the AF is fixed from near to infinity. Works for me.

    • @JKastle007
      @JKastle007 Před 2 lety

      The biggest mistake Panasonic made yet again was not having a phase detect AF system. No matter how beautiful the image, it’s absolutely useless when out of focus. Save your money and keep your GH5. It’s still a great camera.

    • @JKastle007
      @JKastle007 Před 2 lety

      @@Fbnt1 As someone who owns a GH5 and A7S3, buy the A7IV and don’t look back. It’s better in virtually every way (except for IBIs) and it’s lighter which is better for vlogging. Another important note is that the GH6 may very well be Panasonic’s last MFT’s camera.

      If you have panny glass, get the gh6. It's a no brainer for improved ibis and af with great video codecs. If photography is your primary game look at dumping panny and moving to one of the big 3. Fuji is great but apsc is not as flexible for photos. If it was me i would stick with panny as they have the best video capabilities and the gh6 improves the photos. You can always move to another system when they catch up on the video side

I don't think I'm ready for this GH6, but it sure has a lot of advances. Any camera that does 4:2:2 is my friend. As well as the ability to pick up a couple of auto focus lenses relatively inexpensively for gimbal. This looks like a fantastic compliment to the S1. Loving that camera!

  • @alantuttphotography
    @alantuttphotography Před 2 lety +3

    I love how you suggest that the differences in sensor performance should be considered in actual use with compensations for depth of field. One additional point on this is to also consider dynamic range in this category, since most sensors have greater dynamic range at lower ISO values. Just checked the GH5M2 against the Z9 and R3, and when you compensate for a 2 stop reduction in ISO, the smaller format actually has greater dynamic range.

    *Thank you for at least acknowledging this micro-four-thirds sensored camera's superior higher video resolution than any other mft camera thus far. Almost all of the reviews I've seen on the GH6 have been by reviewers who are mysteriously clamming up about the simple fact the GH6 can shoot in ProRes 5.7K 4:2:2 10 bit video and 5.8K in open gate 4:3, which, if you need to shoot video for multiple release formats, such as Tik-Tok, Twitter, and others, gives you multiple choices in framing in post ! What other MFT format camera offers this level of flexibility ?*

    Yes, the X-H2 is the decisive factor. Panasonic and Fuji worked on the organic sensor with twin exposure levels, and it looks like this uses the same principles or techniques learned during that process. Perhaps Fuji will have similar capabilities. The GH6 image looks remarkably good - at least with good lenses.

    For our productions we usually use a Sony FX9, but if I would ever need one package to do both video and stills in a travel-friendly way, this would be that one! I’ve recently had a go with the GH5II and the 10-25 Summilux and I was deeply impressed already. Combine this GH6 with both the 10-25, the 25-50 and a rig and you’re in business. What I love about Panasonic is that it might not always be the best spec’ed overall (with the exception of this GH6), it is always well-designed, rugged and beautifully build with professional use in mind. From software to hardware. I’m using the Z7II myself, but everytime I pick up an S1R I notice it’s a the different level of durability.
    PS. You’re so right to put this DOF hype in perspective. So many people think that you need at least f1.2 to get a good headshot…

    You got my points. It is really hard for me to make the choice between FX3 and GH6. I do have A7R4 and 6 Sony lenses. But GH6 indeed has so many attractive aspects on professional video abilities. Especially a GH6+ a 12-60 f2.8-f4 combo is still much cheaper than FX3 or A7Siii. But, GH6 do lost the dual ISO and the dynamic range compared to the other two. But the 7.5 IBIS is a big deal. Even though I could use gimbal for FX3, but in many situations, handheld shot is very organic. It’s really hard to choose. Do you have any suggestions?

    Thank you for your review, the GH6 is definetly not a disapointment. Hoping Panasonic update/ release an S1H (Mk2?). The S1H was so impressive, Panasonic stands out of the crowd when it comes to features. The autofocus aside, although much improved for those who might rely on it, a new full frame camera would be a very welcomed release.
    One other point, camera manufactures should not hold back on announcing future developmenta. It gives users an option to hold back on making purchases, often with regrets, you read these often in comments. My final comment, we should master the tech we have, share and change the world with stories. When you look back at photography and film, much of the story telling is so captivating. Personally don't ever remember thinking 'What camera did they use to capture that!' Hope that makese sense, thank you.

    Hugh, you are a master at this, bravo.... However as an owner of two Sony cameras one is a PXW Z280 camcorder, A7rII and 2-GH4's if I stick to a psychology and tell myself to concentrate on storytelling and not all the hype of new cameras "it can be hard" I find myself working with older cameras to do my job very well. Of course I would love to have new cameras and I find myself looking at them every day but by the time I consider things like adding new lights to my studio and a host of other things to help my storytelling new cameras seem to push to the back of the line as far as new purchases and I'm OK with that.I concentrate on the right tool for what my client deliverables need to be and I find most are still happy with 1080p as I see that changing I will upgrade to newer tools. If I bought a new camera everytime one came out I would never make any money. I am amazed at my GH4's from 2014 that work like slaves in my studio and don't miss a beat however in the words of Hugh Brownstone your mileage may vary.

    Nobody will notice the slight differences in optical performance in the lenses you talked about. Diminishing returns.

    Good video. While I'm very happy that camera technology has evolved as much as it has, even cameras from 10 years ago can do a fantastic job if you don't mind giving up some features. The GH6 looks to be so damn good especially for the price. The feel to need something better is just great marketing by another camera maker.
    I am happy and grateful to be a G9 and Nocticron owner. I love using the system. The quality and features are more than good enough for anything I get paid to do now and the foreseeable future. Yes, I would love the extra 10% or so extra performance of more expensive cameras. But for that extra cost of the more expensive cameras, I can instead use that for a year's worth of marketing materials, portfolio shoots and schmoozing clients. This is going to get me work instead of that 10% of extra camera performance.
    But those Lumix S cameras are juicy. And don't get me started about Phase One ♥️

    HUGH, ❤️ all your videos man! ...by the way, thank you very much for taking the time previously to write me back a couple of times, (I imagine) I truly appreciate that! Again very nicely balanced video and thought shared. Man, I could listen to you all day long! ...ever considered round table (in person) discussion with other camera CZcams folks? NOW that would be intriguing and fun!! You guys could make it an annual thing and I think people would view, heck yeah they would.
    The GH6! Do you know how fast were you travelling when testing for rolling shutter?
    I have watched including your video now about 20 videos on the GH6. One interesting point I can now say (I should make video about this or someone should) people that have used the GH camera for video, embraced it and generally speak highly and honestly about the system with the exception of one CZcamsr (naming no names here) I have observed their comments appear balance and fair. For those that are not coming from Panasonic GH5 I am not certain all their methods and approach arriving at their final decision is as accurate as they think or came up with. ...did that even make sense what I said?
    I own A7C, and A1 they are both wonderful especially the A1 with GM & G glass. At the same time I have a GH5. Did not jump into the GH5(II), that what's the point, since GH6 is coming and will be better (it is!) then I would be left GH5(II) to do what with? I suppose if I was getting into the GH series from start then the GH(II) could have been a good place to start.
    So now I have gone full frame.
    Can I even look back to 4/3 system? I ❤️ the GH5, ❤️ the GH5 glass I have, ❤️ the GH menu, Man I just ❤️ the camera even with it AF what it is and low light performance. I accept it where it is at. Could it ever meet or catch full frame now. R&D is going to full frame, we get it you said that 🟢HUGH Agreed! 4/3 system can catch APS-C .
    The big, massive question in my mind is this, 🔴"DOES IT TRULY MATTER?"🔴 Is the picture good enough or just right or totally super coming out of the GH6? It appears from all that I have seen, the GH6 picture is indeed that good.
    After all this, "just what the heck do I think based on your awesome video HUGH and all that i know?"
    The GH6 is still a very relevant very awesome camera. ...for film making it just might be the return of the king.
    I am still impartial and sure bias when it comes to GH series so my OPINION is not best not even close but darn I still love the GH system and with arrival of the GH6 I truly want it but right now i sit on the fence kind of. (leaning toward selling my GH5, holding my GH glass then perhaps (probably) getting a new king in my hands. 😁.
    OM-1 / Can you explain why do they get the AF right and they are too 4/3 system and do video?

    Thanks for the eagerly awaited GH6 preliminary review Hugh. Having invested in the Panason MFT GH4, GH5 and G9 after putting the Canon IDX system to one side I would find it difficult to move back to a Full Frame system. For me it comes down to size, weight and cost, which really is the nub of of my decision making process these days as I am getting on in years. I'm a bit of a technocrat who pours over spec sheets for hours and I have come to the realization that no major camera manifacturer is able to offer a camera, which out performs all others. No one camera make or model is the panacea we would all like it to be. It all comes down to a compromise every time. Your video most eloquently demonstrates this very point when discussing Fuji, Sony, Canon, Nikon and others capabilities. Putting all the technicalities to one side for the moment I think it is fair to say that every one of the cameras you have mentioned are capable of producing outstanding results when in the creative hands of a compedent photographer. As always it comes down to what you can afford and what you can carry.

    Good GH6 review of the best conventional camera but what about comparing to smart phone cameras? When I go out with family/travel and want to bring back pictures/video I choose between GH6 or smart phone even though I have a full array of conventional digital cameras of all types. I'm struggling to find a reason to lug around 4-6 pounds of GH6 gear vs 0.4 pounds of phone. If I'm planning on interview/storytelling I bring along a DJI OM5 gimbal which adds a pound of weight but also doubles as a tripod. As far as image quality over a wide range of conditions the newest Apple and Samsung phones compete well with GH6 in my experience Many of the most prolific CZcams creators and increasing number of broadcast TV journalists have moved to smartphones as the image quality is great, and the convenience factor is a game changer. It would be interesting to see your take on this.

    Question: I own the GH5 and when I initially purchased it two years ago I planned on doing videography rather than stills. However, it turned out that I mostly do stills now (car photography). I have oftentimes contemplated whether it would have been better to go with a full frame camera (likely Sony's A73) in the first place, but already bought M4/3-lenses (Nocticron being my favorite amongst them).

      My primary concerns for the m43 format are a little different from most. Especially when it comes to photography, I am not worried about AF performance for anything except sports and wildlife, which we don’t do. I’m no longer that concerned about dynamic range, either after seeing dynamic range boost in action Instead, my concerns are a) sensor resolution being stalled well below 40 megapixels; and b) lenses not offering the size, weight, performance and value one can now get from full frame (as I mentioned). I do not see a comparable lens line 59 Sigma’s DG DN series: not the Nikkor Z’a, nor the Sony G-Masters. Interestingly, I am not enamored with Canon’s RF line (they are either too expensive with aperture’s faster than we need at one end of the spectrum, or simply too compromised at the consumer level for our tastes and use cases.

    I agree with much of what you've said. Especially with the lens selections. I have original 12-35mm f/2.8, 35-100mm f/28, and misc other manual M43 lenses. And the original f/2.8 pair are mostly made with the resolving power of 9-12MP sensors. That's (mostly) fine on my GH5S (10MP), but not on my GH3 or just about ANY other M43 camera (16-26MP).
    What I don't understand, is why companies like Tamron and Sigma don't just add another element (to focus on the M43 sensor, like a built-in Speedbooster) and an M43 mount on their APS-C lenses. I would think that it would be a fairly cheap way to get a pretty large new market and their lenses, at least on a $ for quality basis, really do beat most of the Panasonic lens lineup, especially at the prices they are charging. I'd bet they could charge $100+ more just for the "Speedbooster" improvement on focal distance and f-stop! Per M43 lens sold.
    I have a Metabones .64x Speedbooster (bundled with camera on eBay sale) that really is only useful with FF lenses (because of vignetting). And then I'm back to the lack of (good, for Panasonic) AF, and the weight and cost of FF lenses, even though I'd only buy used!
    Frankly, I'd be happy with just a straight M43 mount and appropriate focus on the sensor and LOSE the rest of the image circle (e.g. "cropped"). At least that way, we'd be getting the SHARPEST part of the image circle/lens focused on the sensor!
    I'd love to have an M43 mount Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8. Same for many of the wide-angle APS-C lenses. Double especially if I could get those lenses with OIS (for my GH5S). Of course, with the GH6, I wouldn't need stabilization. But I think Panasonic would be smart to license at least the Gen 1 OIS that is compatible with their IBIS.
    Then again, I really wish that there was true lens interoperability between Olympus and Panasonic M43 cameras. I'd LOVE to get the Olympus 12-100mm f/4.0 lens with compatible OIS. For "run and gun" that would be a dream on my GH5S!

I love Canon as well but there is nothing viable to me at the price... their mirrorless cameras below the R5C all leave so much to be desired in the video features department and don't even get me started on Sony and their "cinema" cameras that lack even shutter angle. My go to DoP asked me what I'd do if money was no object, to which I replied that I'd probably buy a C70 and a separate camera for stills. But money is actually a consideration and I do have a bag full of native MFT glass, so my pre-order still stands although I fret over it.

      Let me know how you feel after you’ve had the camera in hand and used it?

    Ok,so before I offer some facts ,I will say this is a camera i will take a great look at, hold it, mess with it, etc,etc.It seems they might have solved the issue of the crappy AF, and this one, unlike that EM1x farce, is not horribly overpriced. Now to the facts..I shot 4/3 the first time I went digital, and it was great, yet i remain puzzled why 4/3 shooters feel the need to always compare with FF and APS-C, because frankly, ff, medium format, and APS-C is not worried about 4/3. It's a defensive posture which goes nowhere, because the sales numbers/CIPA numbers speak for themselves, as far as what people shoot professionally with.
    Of course we can say, I can say something is just as good because I like it and use it, which makes sense in those people's minds, yet the hard fact is, this is a BUSINESS, not a popularity contest. These companies that are in the top 4 are there for a reason, because that's what the world needs. People buy Jordans because the y like them, not because they are the best bang for the buck or built better. If I had the funds, I might have a GH6, Z9, A1, cinema cameras, and a host of gear, yet like most people, I have what i NEED.I just bought 2 small cameras, not because I cry and whine about weight, size, and expense, yet i NEEDED something I can shove in my pocket, use in skating rinks, has IBIS, has great AF, and has unlimited recording time to live stream.
    Now that I have that i can get something bigger with similar specs and fills the boxes for me. If GH6 cameras and those like it were the same standards, then the professional shooters would be clamoring to them and they would have the same demand the Nikon d850 and Canon M50 did. I believe that each format has it's merits and they should be praised and compared to similar products, for logic's sake alone, instead of anecdotal instances and stories, as if we cannot shoot 4/3, medium format, film, and full frame, by the same person.

    I'm an S1H owner and I heavily considered trading in my S1H for a GH6. Once I realized that the dynamic range boost setting still had less DR than the S1H, I changed my mind. I'll be waiting for the S2H (or whatever they call it), when they port all of these features to a full frame camera. Also, there hasn't been any mention of BRAW, which is very important to me.
