    High, I really like Panasonic as well but really disappointed with the reluctance to experience with an hybrid AF system. As you allude to, if they fix the AF issue, I have no doubt they’d be the system to beat.

  • @ricardorgomez

    You know a camera from a different manufacturer is a threat to others when the trolls come out in force. And they sure did right after the presentation.
    The S5 is a fantastic entry into the L-mount ecosystem. Panasonic really did an amazing job at the trade-offs to keep cost down and camera small. It's very much a purist camera. And with a firmware upgrade, you'll be able to do 5.9k with it?
    With the AF... Panasonic knows their market. If the GH5 is dominating, why would they change the AF? As a stills photographer, I think their AF is perfectly fine. With video, their market, professionals, are doing focus-pulling or, just manually focusing. I mean, what other expensive, pro-grade video cameras have AF? I think RED has CDAF and that's pretty much it.
    It's about as entry-level or really, low-end professional camera as we can expect from Panasonic. It fills an important spot in their line-up. 2021 will be an "S" year for me and the S5 will be in it.

      Jaeger Schtulmann you named the Sony FX9 ... do you even know that it has a sensor of the same family of Lumix S1, S1H and now S5, and that sensor does not support phase detection autofocus?
      I think, here, we have a marketing problem, so, if Sony makes a camera for pro users that produce 4K over sampling from 6K but without phase detection then it’s for sure a great camera, but if another brand make a camera with similar specs and great image IQ it is for sure failing because of lacking PDAF ... oh well

    • @redbit6182

      Jaeger Schtulmann did you try FX9 autofocus?

    • @PjotrII
      @PjotrII Před 3 lety

      The AF is ofcourse a question, if you need it... I´m filming the majority with no autofocus, so it is not the worlds biggest issue. However if one needs it, one wants it to work. Everyone might not be a troll... as there is one thing I learned. With S5 the autofocus is better "in full mode" than with GH5. If you film in "APS-C" mode, the autofocus is even better (in a test it was better than Sony). So a person might test it in full mode and say it is average (which it is), they are not trolling but telling their experience, not knowing it is better in APS-C mode.

    For primarily shoot stills, this S5 is finally not that great... if that EVF was better, maybe. But thanks to your video, I am still more lean towards second hand SL than the S5... especially to pair with variety of M lenses. Only the low light make me still hesitate a little for that S5.

    • @raksh9
      @raksh9 Před 3 lety

      For best performance of M mount lenses, a M body is the best option. After that, the SL family. But the S5 is decent enough with M mount lenses 35mm and longer, particularly 50mm. Wider M mount lenses will have some amount of corner and edge smearing, especially older, pre-digital designs.

  • @spitperson69
    @spitperson69 Před 4 lety +26

    Panasonic’s dedication to DFD autofocus is so disappointing to me. if they had even a half-decent phase detect system like Fuji’s i’d have preordered the S5 by now. But autofocus is a huge part of my process as a run-and-gun solo filmmaker.
    To me, Panasonic has the best colors, ergonomics, IBIS, video options, and hybrid capabilities of anything on the market. But if i can’t count on the autofocus in dynamic situations, I just can’t commit to the system. Hopefully whoever bought Olympus brings them along for the ride - the OM-1 series was well on the right path, although obviously they got there too late.

      Can I just say why not just hand focus? I know you're run and gun but you can can practice manual focus. If not that, you can also use single area auto focus or some mix of manual and single area. It's a downside yes but how can you be so reliant on AF that everything else is nearly meaningless?

    • @Jazzmarcel
      @Jazzmarcel Před 4 lety +1

      I have to agree on all points but, I think it's a decent Af !

    • @keithgoreham1463
      @keithgoreham1463 Před 4 lety +3

      All AF systems will fail at some point, introducing risk to your shooting. This is why most pros still focus manually, and all cinema lenses are manual focus. What good is getting the perfect performance out of your talent, only to find out the AF glitched when they turned their head and the wrong eye was followed?
      As an L-Mount shooter, I pretty much only use the AF for shooting stills, when shooting video I pull back on the lens clutch and rely on focus-peaking to make sure I get a focused shot. Whenever I try to use an AF mode instead, I miss the shot, not because the system failed to focus. But rather because I lost the shot I wanted while selecting the focus mode and tracking subject. This is especially a problem if you’re shooting large groups of people. Who does the camera decide to lock on to, or even recognize as someone it could lock on to? Seconds matter. So just go manual and get the shot you want/need.

    Hey Hugh! This is not related to the review posted. This is more of a request to connect with other photogs and filmmakers during this pandemic. I live in a small city near Worcester with ZERO arts scene or community. What I’m not getting is opportunities to discuss conceptual ideas, ask for experienced opinions, and have mature discussions about social concerns.
    I feel stuck as I’m not finding the support that I normally get. I need to stay off of social media for my own well-being. Which has had me scrambling for connections with other visual artists so that I can keep growing as an artist. I’m not getting critiqued on aesthetic or technical aspects of my work. Are there online workshops I can sign up for? Where can I ask questions about focal lengths for landscape video during the pandemic when in-person groups are shut down? Is there a live chat or community where I can chat about our photographic crafts? Not having these questions answered is quite demoralizing as a visual artist combined with the sadness of staying home 24/7. I’m suffering. Hugh, what would you do in this situation?

    Hello Hugh,
    Thank you for creating this video. Even though the S5 does not interest me for my own personal use (I’m a glasses-wearing, stills-only shooter), I found your review of the camera along with the subsequent comparison with the other cameras it threatens/shares market segment with both entertaining and measured.
    I'm not surprised by some of the design choices and I think the S5 addresses some of the criticisms leveled at the original S1 lineup (size, price, rear screen, etc.). From what I have read, there are some vocal and upset S1 owners out there, but considering that camera debuted 2 years this month, I'm not sure what they were expecting as technologies often move down the price scale as they mature. I have my even older DC-G9 and it works even better now with its most recent firmware upgrade than it did when I first bought it.
    What I found the most interesting in this morning’s press release were the announcement of the upcoming firmware for the S1-series and the road map featuring a flight of f/1.8 primes. The former has disrupted my calculus surrounding the A7RIV vs the S1R for my next purchase or at least makes me reconsider the S1R more positively in terms of its autofocus for still images (the question is which fits my personal usage case the best but I'm spoiled by choice). The latter has me reconsidering Sigma’s DG DN line (I like the company for the same reasons you expressed in the 85mm f/1.4 DG DN video) if I go the S1R route because the f/1.8 primes may be alternatives to the Sigma DG DNs. The free with pre-order DG DN 45mm 2.8 is also pretty amazing and was to be the first lens I purchase for the S1R/A7RIV.
    As for the dichotomy paradox (and urban photography), solvitur ambulando.

    With regards to AF, if one is into simple photography, it shouldn't be an issue. And if one is into simple videos, this camera should work. Of course contrast system is not as good as phase system but if I can survive non-AF cameras and Fuji's X100 Original AF, anything that comes after is a bonus.

    The struggle is real. I have the Panasonic G9 and am mostly a stills shooter. I love the ergonomics of the camera more than any other I’ve shot (Sony A series, Fuji X series, Canon R series). I wish it had better low light ability and the files weren’t as crunchy at high ISOs. I wish tracking AF was better but I stay because I adore the PL 10-25mm lens - I shoot wide family photography mostly and don’t care for DOF shallower than 2.8 so these mega fast and heavy lenses in FF don’t appeal to me. Is it worth moving to the S5 and 20-60mm or is that basically a wash in terms of image quality when compared with the G9 + 10-25mm? I’ll have to use higher ISOs with the slower kit lens but is the dynamic range and color info in the FF sensor still going to give me better results and can that lens stand up against the 10-25mm?

    I currently focus on documentary films (on a very lean starting budget; all out of pocket) and my initial canera is the old Panasonic UX-180.... . I am looking at the S5 because the color science is similar, but it can push me closer towards the future..... from 8 bit and beyond. Plus it is a package that I can take on the motorcycle as well as hike with and has the weather resistance that the UX-180 does not have..... for out of the box, I can match the UX-180 with Cin-D mode, or switch to V-Log between primary and B camera..... that is my thinking anyway.

    Aside from the Panasonic brand name, I'm struggling to see much synergy between the S5's L-mount niche and the GH5's panorama of MFT lenses and adapters. Sure, you can get manual-focus Canon and Nikon lens adapters for the S5, but if you want auto-focus, you're limited to native L-mount lenses. For those whose budgets rule out Leica's expensive lenses, Sigma is the sole saving grace, and they currently offer just two L-mount zooms. If you're looking for a full-frame mirrorless companion for the GH5, the Nikon Z6 looks like a far more versatile choice, with stabilized auto-focus adapter support for Nikon's huge range of AFS F-mount lenses (plus Sigma and Tamron's as well), which can just as readily be mounted and speedboosted on the GH5. What advantage does the S5 have to offer over that?

    Have you tried shooting these S series cameras in manual? Manual exposure and manual focus? Unless I'm doing something wrong, it's bloody awful, bordering on unusable. I would say the automatic functions, including AF, are superb; but once you try to take control, it's frustrating to say the least. Focus point magnification is dreadful - restricted and badly pixelated, so you can't see where the plane of focus is - and there's something wrong with the preview when using the 'aperture effect on' setting, especially in low light: the whole display becomes so laggy that it can't really track changes in composition. I've never seen anything like it on a high end stills camera (I shoot a pair of S1Rs). I'll grant that the semi-automatic modes are so good that such manual intervention is rarely necessary; but I tried to do some macro work the other day with the Sigma 70/2.8 and nearly threw the damn thing out of the window! There doesn't appear to be any way of focusing at the shooting aperture either, unless I'm doing something wrong, so getting sunstars and mitigating focus shift is extremely difficult. The new camera looks interesting however, and I might grab one at some point.

    Hi! I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer to. Partly because my lack of experience in the professional camera realm and partly because of the lack of information out there. I want to buy a Lumix S5 and I also need a lens for it. I want to film super wide angle at 4k60 ( so the image will be cropped ) and I am looking for a lens that will give me roughly the same image as an iPhone 11/12/13 on the ultra wide camera in video mode ( iPhone crops in ultra wide video mode ) and from what I understand the focal length of the ultra wide on the iPhone is 13mm ( in photo mode ). What lens should I buy for the S5 ( preferably prime ) for this effect aka iPhone ultra wide video mode ( 13mm cropped ). Thanks 😐

    The auto-focus never quite nails the focus on Hugh - it's subtle, but it's constantly hunting and wobbling a bit. Now it's nowhere near as bad as the GH5 or S1, but it's still pretty bad. This seems to be par for the course - Kai W's review was littered with out of focus shots. The lack of full size HDMI port is remarkably short sighted on Panny's part - it needlessly segments a line that has, up to now, not exactly set the world on fire. The looming Sony A7C, A7IV and what I'll presume is some sort of actual firmware fix to avoid a class action suit for the Canon R6 means that the S5 has an up hill battle that I'm not sure it wins. I really do think Panasonic needed to price this more aggressively, or make that prime a permanent bundle. GH6 is looking more and more like wishful thinking, which I suppose is one strong argument for the S5 (virtually every early reviewer calling it the FF gh5). Great content as usual Hugh.

I just loved the 5.7m dot EVF. But it was too heavy for all day street shooting. I sold it and bought the Sony A7r4 which is complete overkill for me in terms of mp, but I just loved that (same 5.7m dot) EVF, especially as I use a lot of manual focus lenses. The reason why I left Panasonic is the missleading advertisement starting with the GH4 and the infamous Professional Audio-Interface which they now offer as a cold-shoe adapter for about 300$. Same thing with the S5. Advertised as a 35mm camera with no recording limit but actually the full format is used only 50% internal recording and a laugheble 40% external recording. In anyother case the sensor is croped in. So simply said all of this: this only works in that, that only works if you do this ect ect ect pisses me of.
    In conclusion it runs down to: you either use one setting (which turns the 5.6K and 35mm sensor nonesense) or you have to study the 10-20 settings to get what you want. No thanks.

  • @borderlands6606
    @borderlands6606 Před 4 lety +1

    CZcams camera reviews are predicated on a single criterion - continuous autofocus capabilities. Not stills photography most will be bought for, not serious video making which requires accurate manual focus - just run and gun vlogging potential. While this may be a growth sector, and it's understandable why CZcamsr's emphasise the benefits of good CAF, in the real world it's a niche within a niche requirement.
    The S5 is not beyond criticism. The EVF is behind the times and the micro ports are silly on a camera with any video pretensions. The fact remains the S5 is a sub £2k camera including the useful 20-60 and "free" Sigma 45mm or XLR adapter. Which makes it closer to a 1k Canon RP than any 2k camera, and much less than the £4200 R5 or £3800 A7S III it's being compared with.

    • @lomoholga
      @lomoholga Před 4 lety +1

      I don’t think it is a niche within a niche when literally every full frame mirrorless and several APS-C as well as micro four thirds (E-M1.2, E-M1.3 etc) have noticeably better continuous autofocus. It has now firmly established itself as the ‘new’ IBIS feature-cameras that don’t have good IBIS in 2020 are the odd man out. Once you have a good IBIS camera you can’t go back- even if you don’t always need it. Same with autofocus.

      @@lomoholga My point is CZcams over-represents the need for CAF and good sound in a hybrid camera, to the point where it's the main thing reviewers talk about. I'm guessing most 24mp full frame cameras are bought for their still photography potential.

      @lomoholga Před 4 lety

      Borderlands you are correct that is pretty much all anyone talks about. I think it is because image quality is so damn good with every camera made since what? 2016? M4/3, APS-C, full frames can all do great images. Low light trade offs for sure, but the other side of the coin is size savings with lenses with the different formats. The ‘final’ frontier seems to be continuous autofocus- until we all focus on another feature!

    • @lomoholga
      @lomoholga Před 4 lety

      Borderlands hey I use an Olympus pen F for god’s sake so continuous autofocus is not a feature I use, but it sucks for the consumer to have a brand new camera that has objectively worse performance than its competitors, and Panasonic seems to think that is acceptable.

    • @borderlands6606
      @borderlands6606 Před 4 lety

      @@lomoholga Lumix single AF is excellent, so stills photographers aren't compromised. I assume Panasonic think they can market a competitively priced full frame mirrorless camera with improved continuous focus, while they perfect contrast detect AF, or find a way of implementing contrast-phase autofocus without the banding issues associated with it.
      The point is CAF is only an issue for a minority, mainly vloggers, but the topic dominates reviews as if the camera is useless for everyone else. The truth is hybrid cameras are a work in progress for video, and no one has yet worked out how to make a high megapixel camera suitable for landscape and still life, that works as a low light video camera with impeccable autofocus. Cameras like the S5 represent a reasonable response to the compromises all-round cameras are judged upon.

True that the M4/3 at f/4 and FF at f/4 will have the same exposure at the same aperture and shutterspeed for the same photo (different DOF) .....but wait there's more ....the FF has a 2 stop advantage over M4/3 in ISO performance (ISO1600 M4/3 = same noise (SNR) / colour / DR impact as FF at ISO 6400), so you're really only getting 1 stop of usable advantage f/4 M4/3 vs f/11 FF,......e.g. at f/5.6 I would get the same image M4/3 vs FF f/11 by upping the ISO 2 stops and having all other settings the same. The GH5 users waiting three years could use a great video camera and still can that has features many newer cameras don't have.

    It seems everybody is waiting for a GH6 or a G9 successor with a good AF and what is Panasonic doing all these years?

    It's the Obvious AF issue that gives me pause..

    Your face is constantly out of focus in this video. Your eyes are soft like for half of the frames of this video, just look at each frame one by one and count how many are soft. More than half. The image AF on your face wobbles constantly. And that A7Siii IBIS is lacking compared with G9, by a lot. The A7Siii is a gimbal-only camera I think.

    Sony A7siii is competing with the LUMIX S1H. The LUMIX S5 is $1500 cheaper then the A7siii, of course it not going to have all the features of the A7siii

    The poor AF just put me off from what would have been THE PERFECT hybrid
