    Superb video! Quick side-note: the S5 still has better dynamic range in V-log. As a matter of fact, it has got about 1.5 stops more (1 when using DRBoost in the GH6) that is, for reference, 12 full stops above the noise floor and a 13 and 14 stop visible bellow it. Also, the S5 is still a better low light competitor, with it´s way higher pixel pitch. If IBIS matters most, go with the GH6. If sheer image quality matters more, go with the S5. It has more DR and better noise floor in standard Iso operation, and allows shallower Dof if you prefer it. The codecs are better in the GH series, though. Hope it helps to someone!

      I miss my Sony A7ii burst shooting and face/eye tracking/phase detection, The S5 frustrates me at times but is making a better photographer and videographer, Sony is like a wheelchair and Lumix is a set of crutches. I miss so many shots now, the Lumix totally botched the tripod action of Freemont Soltice parade because the Ibis was glitching.......holy freakin Jesus!!!! Waited 3 year for that. Images are soft but the colors are spot on true tan and convincing whites, not that funky green cast the Sony produced. Everyting a trade off.

    After using the S5 for a while I could never go back to any GH, the look of the full frame is so much better, not just low light but the feel and look of what the S5 itself produces.
    Plus the GH6 is so much more expensive, right now starting out you’re looking at £1,250 more for a GH6 and two equivalent lenses…..not worth it for what is in my eyes a backward step.

    Been waiting for this comparison! My GH6 arrives tomorrow 😃
    I think the apparent dynamic range advantage of the GH6 is owed to the updated color science. Panasonic has historically not had the most pleasing highlight roll-off, and the GH6 seems to have finally addressed this and given us a smoother highlight roll-off that, to my eye, is reminiscent of the Arri Alexa's.
    Technically though, the S5 does have a little more dynamic range than the GH6-0.5-1 stop when DR Boost is activated and 1.5-2 stops otherwise.

    • @jayclas4023
      @jayclas4023 Před 2 lety +3

      RAW is the opposite of noiseless. Cameras have noise reduction in their codecs, but RAW has much more noise than internal codecs.
      You need to process RAW video and RAW photos, so sharpening and noise reduction must be done in post production. With enough light, RAW can seem to have less noise but it’s there.

    Its a bit funny when you take into consideration the GH6 is 800 grams of girth while S5 with MUCH larger sensor is 700g.
    But crop sensor have advantage of faster lenses, the GH6 can use F1.7 zoom lens 10-25mm.
    Remember that F2.8 is same for MFT and FF, same amount of light hits sensor, only DOF is different.
    And smaller lenses for MFT too! Which means cheaper filters, just need between 50 - 67mm filters.

    I will probably buy a GH6 since I already have a GH4 and three Lumix lenses. The full frame dream is ten years too late for me. I was telling Panasonic in 2012 that the mirrorless revolution would happen in full bloom with full frame. Of course, I thought back then that Canon and Nikon were just about to release full frame competitors to the Micro 4/3 line-up. I would have bought whichever made sense. But Panasonic made the most sense, and I wound up with a GH4 in 2015. It has been everything I asked of it. But I don't ask it to do sports or wildlife or anything where available darkness and autofocus cross paths.

    As a user of vintage prime lenses, Micro 4/3 is really not an option, if you want even a remotely wide field of view. My Nikon AI/AI-S kit consists of 24-35-50-85-105 and 135 mm lenses. It’s full frame for me if I want my 24 to be a 24, not a 48.

  • @superzero4250
    @superzero4250 Před 2 lety +1

    (3:40) The GH5m2 has basically the same AF system as the S5, only with µ4/3 sensor. I find it works remarkably well too, if not better. Recently added the 10-25mm/ 1.7 Leica, to complement a 17mm & 45mm 1.2 primes, with the 25-50mm/ f1.7 Leica on the way. The lens is incredibly sharp, and very adequate for low-light.
    The S5 was not tempting enough just being full frame, and without the more complete range of video centric features found in the GH series. Since both the GH5m2/ S5 have the same Venus Processor, I expect future updates to apply equally, yet work more efficiently on the GH5m2 due to sensor size…
    (9:40) If starting from scratch: I’d start with (2) GH5m2’s, The set of Leica’s and M.Zuiko Pro’s mentioned previously. At least one, if not two Atomos Ninja V’s, or (+). If necessary, either the Leica 25mm/1.4 or the M.Zuiko Pro 25mm/1.2.
    Economical, Efficient, and very capable.
    My main knock on the GH6, is lack of Battery Grip, especially since it drains power like a vampyre, and the choice to not have dual card slots that accept both CF Express and SDXC…

  • @randallbrander8157
    @randallbrander8157 Před 2 lety +1

    I do agree with your description of having two SD Card Slots but I like the CFExpress B cards because of faster transfer speeds. Unfortunately I believe that is one of the main symptoms that makes the Canon R5 overheat. R5c put a fan in but the battery life sucks! GH6 has the built in fan and it seems to me for a hybrid camera it is fantastic with IBIS and Power Boost Mode. The menu options are ridiculous but a well built all round camera in my opinion. But I like the price of the S5 with the kit lens. When I bought my first full frame camera it was the Nikon Z5. Price, and in my area that I live they had more lenses for that camera. The one thing that tipped the scales was the autofocusing. You make great videos. Stay Safe and Keep Smiling! Cheers!

He should do an over and under exposure test on the 2 cameras and see how many stops in both directions he can recover. That's a good test of DR.

    Interesting you didn't mention if you thought the price difference was worth it, at the moment the GH6 is £500 more if you buy each camera with their kit lens. Do you feel the GH6 is worth the extra? I am toying with moving to Lumix from Sony and love the look of the S5. I am leaning more towards the S5 as it is full frame and I will be mainly shooting low light music events so the extra noise from the GH6 would be an issue. The only thing that has me thinking now is the Auto focus on the GH6! Why is it never simple!

    Great video, but you do realize that for MFT cameras, a 12 mm for vlogging is 24mm equivalent? So you need a 10mm MFT lens to have the same FOV as the 20 mm FF lens. The IBIS is so much better in MFT so in actual fact, MFT wins for vlogging! I like the 10-25 1.7 Leica or the Laowa 10mm f2 (with electronic connectors!) for vlogging.

      That’s a tough question. It all depends on what type of sensor you want I guess. I love the image from the GH6. It also depends on what style you shoot for example, will you ever use two cameras for filming and need to match colour? If so get two bodies the same. Plus you can interchange the lenses but you won’t be able to do that with one of each. Hope this makes sense and helps 🙏🏻🎥 let us know what you do

      @@SamHolland Thanks Sam. Doing client work (photo & video) and also for us vlogging, the light equipment with the GH6 + 100-400 + one S5 would be great.
      So I am thinking about this combo: GH6 + Leica 100-400 S5 II + 24-70mm F2.8 + 50mm F1.4 + Sigma 20mm F1.4
      Weight = around 5 Kilogram
      Or
      S5 II + 24-70mm F2.8 + 50mm F1.4 + Sigma 20mm F1.4S5 II + Sigma 60-600mm
      Weight = around 6.450 Kilogram
      Size and weight are PRO GH6 + S5 II Combo
      But different chargers, filters etc and not only 1 system...
      So I am asking you (any myself ^^) if the better low light of the S5II is worth the size, weight and also money.
      And what about IBIS? Is it better / more stable when GH6 + 100-400 are used or when S5 II with Sigma 60-600mm are in use?
      S5 II and Sigma comes also with better AF I think, right?
      A really hard decision!

    After having GH5 for 4 years , and like 10 lenses with it some 0.95 , the mighty 18-35. I've purchased the s5 instead of gh6. (this month) .
    Because i have a canon 6D mk2 as my photo camera. And i love FF. So ive wanted that FF GH5 = S5.
    But i have to say gh5 is a monster mostly thanks to his good and afforable lenses choices.
    Whereas with my S5 im like think twice and even more to buy a lenses.
    I do think that if the gh6 was like 1800 $ i would have purchased it for sure. But ive found a nearly new s5 for 1200 $ . Made me save 1000 $ and i bought the meike 35 2.1 with it.
    Gh-6 is a really nice upgrade . If i had it , iwould prefer it with my lenses over panasonic s5 or S1 . Better codecs 4K 120 p. so much good thing and ibis a bit better.
    If you have GH5 and wanna upgrade , go for it there won't be a GH7 . don't go for s1 or s5 or even s1H .
    I do think they will release a S5 MK2 or just an upgrade of s5 with better limitations.
    Just having a gh5/6 with 18-35 1.8 sigma is such a beast combo for anything. THen buy maybe 1 or 2 panasonic native lense (25 1.4 /42 1.2 )so you can put it on gimbal and somehow rely on panasonic's af. wide angle : laowa 10 mm zero distortion.Sigma 50 MM1.4 is the best lens i've got on my gh5 in terms of color/image quality.
    People will say panasonic its bad af ."yes " but as long you don't do insane switch angles that will defocus refocus.. It does the job well
    My only complain about "panasonic" i do prefer canon or sony in terms of image/color when it comes to take photos. I never do photos with s5 or gh5 .

Also shooting films with live actors. I'm wondering if I should get a second S5 or the GH6 with better auto focus and IBS among other things. But then what about combining video shot with the two different sensor sizes. I'm a beginner. I'd be filming alone most of the time so put one camera on a tripod. I really love the colors of the Lumix lineup, and I understand Canon, Nikon & Sony are the Three Horsemen of the Camera business, but I just love how Panasonic gives a lot for your buck.
    Obviously with the DFD system, I can see why Panasonic doesn't get the reputation it deserves.
    Moreover, I also own quiet few lighting equipment with triggers focused on the MFT system.
    It's hard because, I plan to do more Wedding photography and it shocks me that some folks out there are using Lumix lineup.
    I use Canon with a company I work with (Co. Equipments). But for my personal use, I'm a lumix guy.
