The idea of Clayface as a super hammy narcissist voiced by Jun Fukuyama is a very Japanese choice, and I love it.
It's in keeping with the Harley Quinn cartoon too.
@DarthBobCat true since the Harley Quinn show present Clayface as super hammy and loves being an actor
I know nothing about anime so i'll take your word for it
All hail Lelouch!!!!!!
All hail Lelouch!!!!!!
All hail Lelouch!!!!!!
All hail Lelouch!!!!!!
I hope there is similar comedy with Clayface as in the Harley Quinn show. There he’s not a charismatic pretty boy, he’s a hammy method actor who gets lost in the different roles he plays and loves it!
It’s hilarious that he turns into a sorority girl and immediately becomes the most popular girl on campus who forgets about the mission because of all the drama. He even keeps texting Chad after the mission is over!
Waller busting it down was something i never thought i would see.
Imagine fat Waller doing it
I don't think any of us needed to see that
I find slightly disturbing. 😅
Are your guys like 12? Come on.
The unnecessary sexualization of black women in Asian media is odd
I genuinely love Clayface so far. He reminds a lot of the Harley Quinn show version, where they really lean into him being an actor and wanting to play along with the roles he’s given. I feel there’s always something lost when him being an actor isn’t a large part of his character, because then he’s just a generic, blobby monster. So I appreciate this show making sure to show off him being an actor.
he's also hot
I also immediately felt this was a more serious (but still fairly goofy) depiction of that version of the character. Granted, I barely have any exposure to the character outside of the Harley Quinn Show, but still...
I was baffled that they turned the goo monster into a sexy anime man
My only problem with Clayface is that because he IS still a big blobby monster... like... how exactly are you putting a bomb in his neck and it just stays there? Like I feel like he could just glorp around it and it would just... fall out? I only watched the first episode so far but I hope they address this.
gay this clay man gay this clay man clay this gay man clay this gay man
When I saw Clayface in a "who's bad" Michael Jackson outfit. I knew he was going to be my favorite character.
He reminded me of the Pro-Waterbender who kept bothering Korra in Legend of Korra lol
Tahno
Waller dancing in the intro will live rent free in my head for several days.
That's the ending not the Intro.
the Amanda Waller Peace-makeresk outro dance sequence was just a choice.
The best choice

@@TitularHeroinethank you!
Am the only one who thought Peacemaker when wearing the bag over his head looked like the Birthday Boy? Man, I was really trying forget that character.
That’s literally who I thought it was when I saw him in the trailer. I thought the Squad was gonna have Peacemaker and Birthday Boy, it wasn’t until I saw someone else say it was Peacemaker that I realised.
It reminded me of tuesday from unordinairy
I was thinking Bag Head Jason.
He looked like Bag head Spider-Man.
I thought it was scarecrow actually
The new DC Anime Catalog: Batman: Gotham Knight, Batman Ninja and Catwoman: Hunted and now Suicide Squad Isekai.
Yup
Batman Ninja is a great watch, especially in a group viewing. Lots of laughs to be had.
There’s also some DC manga. My favorite is Batman & the Justice League, which makes similar CHOICES but is surprisingly faithful to the comic versions of the characters.
I feel My Adventures with Superman should be up there
Don’t forget DC Nation’s Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld which is anime since it was made by David Production
There is a name in English for isekai - "portal fantasy" - though it doesn't have quite the same connotations (when you hear "isekai" you usually assume the other world will be modeled after RPGs, which isn't so much a thing in Western portal fantasies).
Yep. Dante's Inferno, Narnia, Alice in Wonderland, and so on are classic portal fantasies.
DC has Adam Strange and the Planet Rann for a more Sci-fi version of Portal fantasy too.
Or Flighrt of Dragons 1982, commissionned by Rankin-Bass to TopCraft (studio ghibli) and directly inspired most of the Zelda franchise, even so much that Zelda 2 NES manual has animated CEL screencaps as filler art.
And from there it was natural to outsource Philips CDi games' russian animation, and American shows like Mario Super Show and Captain N.
"lit rpg" is another one i believe
Peter Pan, Secret Garden...
I've read that the director of this really wants to make a Flash series.
And I think the team could have used a cannon fodder character or two. I can't really picture any of these characters getting blown up with the way things are going.
Also I woulda love to see Killer Frost.
Anime Flash would be really cool, you could get some really trippy animations for super speed.
Love the piano-driven Jokermobile. How does it even work, lol? The series looks fun, but I'm loving free streaming even more than the Jokermobile. Great review as always, Sasha.
Vegnagun from Final Fantasy X-2. Joker is Shuyin and Harley is Lenne. You're welcome. ;)
@@apollolux Ah! There's the inspiration for it, at least. Thank you!
I never thought i would consider Clayface hot but here we are, what an interesting year
this video is a Stealth Claylist addition
If Suicide Squad Isekai becomes a success, The Next DC Anime adaptation should be *DC MECH* by Kenny Porter.
I'd like to see Marvel throw their hat into the anime ring. Demon Days anime adaptation anyone?
This isnt the first dc anime wener bro japan has been around aince 2011 they make 5 anime a year and sell it to bogger studios they helped work on food wars mon psycho gate isnit bad to pick up girls in a dungeon railgun/indwx , to love ru and so much more is linked in their credited work
Nah, it should be Green Lantern Magical Girls.
@@kurtbada8920DC has Princess Amethyst who is already a magical girl and they even did a short anime series about her with animation from David Production
Isekai: It's the new hottness!
Stranger in a strange land trope: I'll just be here chilling then
You realize that Superman has ALWAYS been an isekai story. Reborn in another world where he's overpowered...
Digimon: Have you forgotten about us?
I spent about twenty minutes watching the Amanda Waller dance clip on repeat while giggling incessantly. No idea why, but it's just the funniest thing.
Oh boy, deviant art is going to have a field day with this Clayface, I can hear it now… It’s not hentai, it’s clay lol
Ah, the Enkidu phrase.
@kailevil3444 its not gay if it's clay-
Batman Ninja movie is also an isekai. What did you think of it? 🤔🦇
That movie is insane.
Great film but should have been a whole series or even a movie trilogy.
@@king_poyo64 In the best possible way.
@@SpaceJawa Yes, what other Batman movie has a giant mech battle with a Joker temple vs Giant Batman made out of monkeys, then later bats and monkeys.
It was so exaggerated
Episode one was definitely a bit wonky but I'm glad to report the show improves significantly in the subsequent episodes. Probably why they made it a 3 episode binge drop
I'm so glad they added Clayface. He's fantastic here.
Can we take a second to appreciate how Peacemaker’s Japanese VA also plays Dio in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure?
Takehito Koyasu?
You thought it was Batman... When it was me! Peacemaker ready to spread peace across... Za Wārudo!
Fun fact! Joker's Japanese VA is Weather Report's anime VA
I saw people review this, and while I initially rolled my eyes 🙄 at ANOTHER Suicide Squad push into a new media (especially after that new video game debacle), I found it relatively amusing. I fully agree with the "funny, campy, not serious" tone of the show the director wanted. It feels simultaneously like a piece of fluff nothing and some sharp violence/gore of the DC worlds but in kawaii anime form. Quite a dynamic difference. I'd like to see more episodes of this amusing brain rot... If I remember to bother with it.
I wanted to like it but at this point I'm just done with another adaptation of Harley Quinn. The last decent story she was in was when she got over Joker and tried to save Punchline and Jokers daughter from following in her footsteps. And while it was an elseworld, Injustice Harley was peak Harley as she went on a journey and finally got control of her life again, showing she was not a monster and actually did just want to help people when she snapped out of her infatuation with Joker... Like a Dr that she is.
It feels like a fun D&D adventure to me.
Isekai is played out, Harley Quinn is played out, the Joker is played out, and Suicide Squad is close to being played out. It's "Overexposure: The Anime!"
@@rakoonshampoo2608they’re all literally murder hobos who took over a prison in episode 2 and couldn’t care less about any amount of world building. This is peak DnD energy and I’m so here for it
I had no idea this existed until last night when the official opening/closing was released and showed up in my recommended.
Never knew Waller could bus’ it down like that.
~_~
The version of Clayface here is interesting. This anime is doing the same thing Batman: The Animated Series did with Clayface, it’s mixing the original actor Basil Karlo one with the second Matt Hagen one, but this one looks more a modern update Smooth Criminal version of Basil Karlo. You see the original Basil Karlo human Clayface in his suit and fedora hat and you can see where the anime version is coming from.
Shoutout to our father, Calliope Mori, for fulfilling two of her dreams at once thanks to this series: Singing an ending song for an anime and being in a comics industry-related project. Going to school for comics and working on her rap paid off! Way to go, Dad!
Waller busting a move like that shows she's a Deadbeat! Like Deadshot.
the ending song sucks
@@mcbill7352Everyone's entitled to their opinion. Having watched many anime, I've heard way worse.
@Just_Some_Guy_with_a_Mustache honestly the worst part is callis voice.
Excieted to see DC put out more of their characters into animated projects , it seems like a fun series so far
I was a pretty hard liner, this show is not for me. But after hearing your thoughts I'm actually more intrigued by this than I expected to be. And I actually kinda love that Joker design
From what I’ve seen so far, I’m really liking Joker and Harley’s dynamic and the approach the producers are taking with it.
As an anime fan and a DC fan this was an interesting combo. I generally dislike isekai as a genre but because it was DC I went with it. I grew up in the 90's 00's era of DC animation and it tugs at my nostalgia. So binged the first 3 eps the 1st ep made me go wait the Muzan/MJ clone is Clayface? I mean it works but yeah was a bit to get around at first. I do adore his character in this. That closing song an animation had me going lol wtf.
Isekai is very hit or miss. Some are really good with deep plots and well thought out worlds (youjo senki for example) and others are just....bad. Like shrimp sitting in a dumpster for a week in the middle of July bad. And it seems there is very little in between the two. And the fact it was very popular means you get a lot more bad than good.
A seemingly healthy Harley and Joker relationship? That's actually... Refreshing.
I mean, the origin story was that she was a psychiatrist that Joker emotionally manipulated into helping him break out, ruining a woman’s life just to repeat the same cycle of violence. I think any healthy relationship from that premise is a little… unlikely.
@@meloneatingwolf1882Yes, the only way I could see a non-abusive relationship between Harley and Joker is in a comedic approach in which the Joker is not romanticized, like in The LEGO Batman Movie.
I just watched the first three episodes last night so wonderful timing! I'm glad they dropped the first couple episodes at once because I was hooked by the story by the end of ep 2
I loved it so far. It hit all the anime tropes, has good comical timing, and balances it all with great fight scenes. The Ratcatcher scene when they were in jail was hilarious.
I didn't have any knowledge of it, so the notification on max was one of the wildest I ever got
I've had clayface as my phone background since the moment they dropped the promotional image of him, knew he'd be my favorite just from the trailer. I've been so desperate for this show to release since the first teaser to the point I was dreaming it got released early lmao. binged the first 3 eps as soon as they dropped and it was honestly even better than I could have imagined, I'd really love to see your opinions in the rest of the episodes especially since it was your vids that restarted my dc obsession (which has done wonders for my mental health) the rest were also just super fun in general. really loving this show so far especially as a huge anime fan, though I can't help but be slightly suspicious of clayface as much as I'm obsessed with him the story hasn't explained yet why he can't just get rid of the bomb. I mean the trailer literally showed him turning into a puddle on the floor and he's an actor so I can't quite buy the fact that the bomb is something that actually concerns him. though no matter what happens I'm still gonna be wasting all my money on any merch that gets released of him lmao. I'm desperate for the next episode already.
Ah yes isekai, that niche genre that definitely has not been over saturating the market in the last few years.
do you mean superheroes (and villians) movies? :v
Here for bishie Clayface. Quick, someone draw fanart!
Edit: I wrote this as a bit of a joke but I think hot Clayface is actually going to get me to watch (this plus Sasha's analysis ofc). Good lord, lol
Western examples of isekai you may be familiar with: Alice In Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, Dragon Tales, Harry Potter to a certain extent, Code Lyoko.
Barsoom by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Narnia by CS Lewis, perhaps the film Labyrinth?
The old dungeons and dragons cartoon from the 80s. It is as close to pure isekai you can find. The kids were literally transported into the world of the game and the whole show is them trying to get home.
Don't forget A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain, which is considered by many to be the progenitor of "isekai", seeing as it was originally published in 1889.
I thought this was some sort of meme when I heard about it months ago but it does look somewhat interesting. Don't really watch too much isekai, unless you count Digimon, but I'll give this a try.
You asked who this show is made for it's made for me hahaha I love it
Thanks for covering this show! The piano playing joker to drive the car was insane but a great intro to the world. Look forward to your coverage the other episodes.
This show could open for other DC Characters to have their own show. Dark Knight of Steel could be perfect for an Anime Adaptation.
You do such a great job of breaking it down. Thank you!
I am the sort of person that watches the majority of anime that comes, been doing so since around 2011, and I was a little worried it wouldn't be good depictions of the DC characters, ut I found the first 3 episodes rather enjoyable.
I too am pretty interested in the Clayface depiction, partially because I am particularly fond of Clayface being a diva of a failed actor, who always could be an actually strong force but usually doesn't have the motivation to do the sort of thing the other rogues do.
loved all three eps the ED is a banger (thanks dad) and Amanda has moves
The intro and outro go hard.
I caught the Calliope Mori watch along just in time. Other than that first Kitana fight, I’m loving it!
Clayface is looking 👀🍸🔥
Bro, we're TOO familiar with isekai, tired of it levels of familiar but anywho😂😂😂,to each their own
Lol, I know, I was like, sir, we are aware of Isekai.
@@CasuallyComics He probably thinks he's going to reach people who don't watch Japanese anime. But he probably doesn't realize that here in the U.S.the people who don't watch anime also don't usually watch animation at all.
Thanks I’ll check it out with my friends
It's always kind of fun to see Western characters since by Japanese studios (the X-men show and Ninja Batman etc.) They're just another kind of Elseworld story. This one has been cute so far.
which x-men anime show? the only one i know of was some Wolverine origin type movie.
@Radicalbeast it was released in 2011 I think by MadHouse? Here's a wiki link to the Marvel Anime stuff and they talk about it on there. It's not bad, just a little edgy for my taste.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_Anime
This is my favorite version of Harley in YEARS. Also I didn’t know it was dubbed haha I will be checking that out though Harley’s Japanese va was fantastic
An actual Casual video I'm in!
I’ve definitely been approaching this one with some wariness. I mean, I’ve got a hand in DC and a hand in anime, and thanks to my hand in anime I am sick and tired of isekai.
So when I heard about this, I was thinking, “ OK that could be a neat concept, as long as they don’t just completely strip the characters and turn it into a paint by numbers isekai.”
So far, it’s sounding like that’s exactly what they did. I’m not holding my breath at this point.
That art style is beautiful!
The lack of any legal way this to watch this in the UK is rather annoying
Why aren't there more subscribers? This is hands down the best comic channel on CZcams!
If DC had not been cowards they would have tied it to Amethyst of Gem World. Also, dd you ever cover Batman Ninja?
ok, but do they explain HOW Waller plans to keep Clayface under control? I dont see the neck bomb holding the same issue to him it does the others
That's what I thought!
As covered in the Suicide Squad comics...
The explosive is SENSITIVE. It detects heartbeat. If clayface tried to remove it, it would blow.
@@elrick44 he's playing a role, cue an overly dramatic death followed by him reforming 2 mins later
Maybe I am finally just too old. Maybe I'm just a tad more well read than the newer generations. When I was a young man, there was a genre in the West known as "Portal Fantasy" that included such things as "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court", The "Chronicles of Narnia", and stories about John Carter. Since "Isekai" just means "other world" it seems to me that the West has a more formal name for the genre. While I know Isekai stories are not so well loved by many, I will never get sick of them.
Liking it so far. Clayface I think works better here than other iterations as he's so over the top. I am quietly hoping he runs into someone named Annie and askes if she's OK, lest the Smooth Criminal outfit be a total waste.
Apparently Max is streaming it in Japanese with English Subs, which is fine by me, but it might annoy the dub only crowd.
2:04 Disney Television Animation has 3 Iskeais so far with Star vs, Amphibia and the Owl House.
It’s seems to be better than some of the other stuff we’ve gotten with the Suicide Squad (ehem: Suicide Squad Kills the Justice League) So I’m all for it.
I'm just happy Calliope Mori finally got to do an anime song. It fits Harley so well too
A video on my Birthday!!!
Happy Birthday! 🥳
@@Dougeb7 thank you!
While the first episode wasn’t my favorite, it really hooked me with the other two, where it really feels like the characters get to do their own thing.
I didn't know it was in the works at all until about a week ago. So far I'm enjoying it. I especially appreciate it's more lighthearted tone and the way they've mashed up the Suicide Squid and the Isekai genre works well from both angles. I also think the more generic fantasy setting works well for both the lighthearted tone and because it makes this feel more like a random assignment for the Suicide Squid. It allows the story to focus more on their personalities and less on the inner workings of the other world.
Answer it's for me I'm loving it. I especially love it cause the character designer is Akira Amano author of hitman reborn
Based on your video, I went to check this series out. Watched the first three in one sitting. It was definitely different but in a good way. I am on board for the run.
7:18 the deliver here was great. Sasha would make for a great voice actor.
I really want to hear your thoughts on that ED in later episodes!
Even though I don't mind Clayface in the anime but why is he on the team? Can't he just go inside his neck and remove the bomb with ease
Yeah that has yet to be really addressed, but honestly he's one of the best characters in it that kinda don't want him to leave.
He wouldn't even need to do that if the bomb exploded he'd just reform himself. I'm assuming he's just playing along for a role.
id assume they have some kind of specialized bomb for him
Oh yeah, I'd love to see more of this show here, don't know, feel like it's gonna be an interesting discution XD
Looks fun and very classic toonami. Ill wait to see it all.
Had seen a trailer for this. As a veteran dc fan I am used to seeing alternate versions of the characters. So my reaction is always 'what's one more?'. I am just happy to see them on the screen. Big or small. I would have given this a go anyhow, but this has intrigued me and made me really want to see it. Not sure if it's popped up anywhere in Britain yet but I hope it does.
Everyone else: "What the heck is going on?"
Clayface: "Oh hell yeah, this is my jam!!! Let's go, new world here I come!!!"
Amanda Waller visually is one of the best accurate depictions of a black woman in anime.
How do you have the dubbed one? I thought it wasn’t available yet?
So far, I’m enjoying the show. I like the way Harley fights in this especially with all the giggles like she’s having a blast. I love this Clayface. A little nod to Alan Tudyk’s version maybe? And that King Shark intro was perfect.
Pretty sure you just pick "english" when watching on max
Just started watching it...will let ya know.
Everybody likes Quinndependence, but its also like killing the roadrunner...
First the Justice League RWBY crossover and now a Suicide Squad isekai. Oh... kay. Those are definitely choices. As an anime fan though all I can say is at least they didn't go with the "overpowered MMO god protagonist" plot that so many isekai are plagued with right now. I'll watch this show for a bit and see where it goes.
Given DC’s whole multiverse tomfoolery, doesn’t it technically have a whole bunch of isekai already? Like, just to name a popular example, the first Injustice game is technically an isekai. Sure there are some common tropes with Japanese-made isekai not present there, but those tropes aren’t essential, and the broad strokes definition still applies.
I would also mention the time Batman traveled to the past before as an isekai
I want to see more!
Isekai (which I see as being translated as 'alternate world' or 'another world') is inspired by concepts that go back to classical times, however H.G. Wells and Edgar Rice Burroughs are probably the first modern takes on the concept ('First Men in the Moon' and 'A Princess of Mars'), although Burrough's John Carter has the basic ideas laid out (the first novel has a scene that's referenced near the end of the 1990 film Total Recall). L. Frank Baum's Oz series can also be seen as the foundation of modern isekai.
From what I can tell, the Japanese really began to explore the tropes in the 80s, and modern isekai is using them from point of view of wanting to get away from the heavy pressures of school and working for corporations.
I've been seeing the odd trailers for this popping up since last year, and the second one caught my attention, so I have some curiousity for it.
When I first heard about this I thought it was going to be a movie. I was so surprised when I got to the end of the first episode and saw next episode pop up.
I looked this term you mentioned about this Isekai thing there is an example I have watched a anime called Inuyasha I have watched back when it was aired on tv, and it’s the dubbed version of that anime💁🏻♂.
It’s not exactly my cup of tea -but I really like seeing them try something new and establishing these characters for a new audience outside of North America.
I think more American comics should be trying something similar to this, the timing is right for it and I love the idea that we can make something new and interesting that might even bleed back
(💭Perhaps in 10 years Amanda Wallers proficiency for dance will be her new defining trait)
a few things worth adding this seems to be one of the first suicide squads or at least the first one that uses Quinn. As such I think it's realitivly early in her story and I'd bet by the last episode. She's done with joker as from my experiences of her character she needs people like dead shot, rick flag and poison ivy to help her understand what kind of person Joker is since she hasn't met yet her being smitten with him makes sense.
Looks fun, I want to watch it. I really love the design of Harley
I wouldn't mind seeing some of the heroes in an anime like the Flash or Wonder Woman.
The director of this was actually hoping they'd get to make a Flash anime instead, lol.

I have zero interest in the isekai genre, but the insights into the director's headspace actually make me reconsider giving this a shot.
There are very good isekai out there one I recommend for people who aren't fans of isekai would be youjo senki. The main character is sent to another world because he has an argument with God?(Maybe) When he died.
Waller hitting the griddy is gold
lmfao i cannot imagine living such a life where i’d not heard of isekai, but i also got into it fairly early because i happened to think Re Zero looked cool so it’s been a long time. I don’t remember what got me into that, but man what a different life i could have. This is all a response to the quote, it’s just kinda funny. I imagine there are plenty of comic book fans that probably don’t know anime, so it’s reasonable just a funny thought
I was already gonna watch this one, but now l can't wait
Honestly don't know what to expect from it when I first saw the announcement, but I'm pretty excited for it seeing how the writer for this is the author of Re:Zero and combined with Wit studio animating it, I have hopes for it to have a good season 1 overall, if not great. Also, the cast is stacked. Mori got to do the ed, that's awesome. Speaking of the ed, seeing waller bust some moves is interesting lol.
"Transition Isekai"? Boooo! It's called The/ Suicide/ Squad all of them having a bump with Truck-Kun is exactly what this needed.
It feels more like a Secret Six anime to me... Everyone's getting along really well and having fun together. Also the ending feels like something Gail Simone would come up with.
