    I have to disagree about Illy. It tastes very chocolaty and never bitter. Maybe you had a wrong grind size or the temperature was too high.

      I'm with you, Allan; I was a great fan of Illy, and when I was in Italy, I always used to enjoy the Illy brand, and I have no complaints.

    Unfortunately I disagree with you about illy classico. When you open the tin can, the aroma of deliciously potent coffee permeates the air which I love it. The flavor of the beans fills the entire mouth without bitterness or any cloying feel. I taste the coffee and the taste lingers without turning bitter. It is not a medium roast as any other but is much richer and expressive of the beans' oils and flavor profile as described by Illy.

      I agree they taste great, especially the brasil u really smell the caramel. But I must say I didn't feel that when I drank it.

      First of all, the youtuber advertises generically that any coffee that you can buy in a local shop (not a supermarket) is better than Illy. Well, every blend is different, so this is not only false, but it's misleading. Second, I'm Italian and tried both Illy and Lavazza Oro. And not just me, my friends as well. Illy is just superior, it's a great coffee, and even at the bar it is one of the most appreciated. Is it the best in the world? Probably not, but that's subjective. For me Illy is the best supermarket blend you can find, you can't go wrong with Illy. I'm sure it is possible to find something better at a cheaper price, but good luck with that.

      @@biomorphic I am Italian as well. I never understood why Illy is twice as expensive and it tastes like burnt coal or an ashtray. So bitter and harsh. Lavazza Oro is quite good, I had better, but I live in the USA, and I think it is has the best quality/price. Illy is from Trieste, but from that city I always liked Hausbrandt coffee

    Good comparison. After trying many types of coffees in the last 10 years , from traditional to espresso, I find the best to be a fresh locally roasted coffee from a specialty roaster. Freshness makes a big difference. Normally I find anything more than 2 to 3 months from roast date to be rancid.

      That's true, but what happens if there is no specialty roaster anywhere nearby. Also affordability needs to be considered, because not everyone can pay $15 for 500g of specialty coffee if they are making minimum wage

      Ive tried hundreds of speciality and supermarket roasts and i wouldnt say brands such as Lavazza is far behind.
      And Coffee that is more than 2 months from roast dates doesnt have to be poorer in quality if its well preserved.

    OMG! I just bought a Breville Barista Express and I've been using the Lavazza Oro to dial in and I've been wasting so much coffee because I find it so bitter. I just assumed I didnt dial in correctly and i was over extracting, but I tried to ground more course and all I taste is the sour. Hearing you describing the Lavazza Oro now I noticed it matches exactly with the way I taste.

    Thank you, I'm no connoisseur in coffee, but the Illy gave me the same taste as you described, so at least I'm heading in the right direction. I've only just come back from a coffee roaster here in Adelaide called Willow Bend coffee where my wife and I both loved their produce, my wife isn't quite into coffee, but she said it was the nicest coffee she's ever had.
    Love to see content from here in Aus., it always seems a lot more personal, so thanks.

    WOW, I have tried Illy and Lavazza. Just trying now the specific specialty coffee as of today My Jura S8 have Carraro Tazza d'oro , Look out , so good, smooth,no bitterness, hints of chocolate, just a tad of sweetness, goes great with milk and esspresso. I also have next to that is Maromas ORPHEA, And yes this is also compared and same but just a tad lighter on the chocolate tones. Both are just fabulous. I am looking to try what you have the specialty coffee blend. take care

    Thanks for the video. Illy gave me the exact same result and impression when I first tried it with my GC and I thought I was doing something wrong. Illy is actually better brewed using a mokka pot I found.

      Hey Gergely, thanks for the comment. To be completely honest, there is no such thing as coffee only suited for one brewing method. The Illy is just overpriced 💩😂
      For example, I had the Tightrope as espresso, then with milk & even tried it with the french press. Tasted delicious all across the board😁

    Thanks for approaching this potentially controversial comparison in a reasonably balanced way. I do slightly object to the phrase "average coffee drinker" - speciality coffee is a relatively new concept and I think it's a bit disrespectful to assert superiority of this style of coffee over a tradition that has been in existence for decades. I do appreciate that speciality coffee should be applauded for its focus on truth to origin and efforts to draw out all of the flavour potential of the bean, but it is just another approach to drinking coffee. I try to balance my consumption of speciality coffee with more traditional darker roasts as this is a flavour I have grown to love over many years. Sometimes speciality coffee is too much like tea and I miss the flavours that result from roasting a bit darker. There is always a bit of arrogance lurking behind the speciality coffee mindset - "our way is the only way" - which I don't like. Also think about context - Italian style coffee flavours work very well with the food that is consumed with Italian coffee such as pastries and toast with butter (you need the bitterness to cut through the milky flavours), whereas speciality coffee may work better as a drink on its own. So please speciality people show some respect for your elders! Finally I did try some Illy a couple of months ago and remember it being quite good. I'm going to try some more to make sure I am not imagining things. It's currently GBP5.50 on Amazon compared to GBP8.50 for typical speciality in the UK (250g).

      I don't see anything wrong with "average coffee drinker". It just refers to everyday Joe, who isn't a coffee enthusiast, but wants a nice cup of coffee. The majority of coffee consumers are your "average coffee drinker", so in this video I was just trying to understand their perspective, and also show what a good specialty roastery can do for them. 😁

    I usually enjoy the fruitiness (blueberry , peach, jackfruit, etc) and sweetness of specialty locally roasted coffee that are light to medium roasted for my espresso machine. Came across your video today after experiencing similar results with illy. However, i did get very good well balanced results for my previous 8 cans. Still trying to figure out - perhaps some batch are better than others.

    Thanks a lot for the thorough comparisons! These are great take-aways when choosing among so many different beans. Was in Supermarket and saw the ORO on sale today but didn't dare to take one cause it seems overly cheap. LOL. After your review, I think I'm gonna grab one and try it out :)!!

      Grinding fresh is the way to go, using pre ground coffee is not a good idea if you're after a good cup of coffee 😁

    Nice comparison. I've bought Illy exactly once. I truly undersand what you mean by the smell, it's really bad and confusing because I was expecting something at least half way decent even if it was commercial brand coffee. I kept the can though, a nice bean container. I prefer it to plastic bags. So I guess it was still a usefull purchase for the can!

      @@tmb-themajesticbeanchannel1746 I didn't expect your video would review 2 coffees I already know/tasted. Ily I like the brand, and the cans too they are handy yes. However I never put attention at the Classic but they have different kinds too which I did enjoy. Guatemala, Brasil (caramel), Ethiopia (floral notes). They have an "intenso" too, the Guatemala I enjoyed the most has a bit of chocolate taste. Not sure if I would still rate it high compared to other, perhaps better espressos that i tasted. It's personal preference too. From Lavazza I have a few too but not such a fan of the brand. The brands in my region that I've had the best coffees from up til now are "Douwe Egberts" & "Rombauts".

    Nice comparison! Prices are really different in Italy: I've spotted Lavazza Oro at 10/12€/kg, Illy at 20-24€/kg.
    Did you consider that Illy suggests using 14g for a double?
    Personally, I really like Illy in a bar or using an iperespresso capsule but I struggle brewing a decent espresso with their grains.
    BTW: how do you fast-tune your Baratza Sette when changing coffee beans? I just bought this grinder and is driving me a bit crazy in finding the proper setting

      I also remember Illy being much more expensive than Lavazza, back home in Slovenia.
      It would be very difficult to find a basket that fits such a small amount of coffee, plus the dose doesn't really matter. It's the recipe & brewing ratio that are important.
      When it comes to the grinder, I'd suggest you find the espresso range first. On mine it is between 4 & 6 at the moment, for a 19g dose. Usually when I dial in a new coffee, I begin where I left off with the previous beans I was using and then take it from there. Hope this helps 😁

I understand your strategy when changing coffee but you need at least 3 (not to say 4) coffees to get the right setting, which translates in 60/80g of wasted coffee out of 250g. Quite a huge amount...or am I missing something? The Sette at least allows to note the setting for each coffee...

      @@StefanoDalPont I agree with you on that. Lately I've been more mindful about wasting good coffee, which is why I'm making more pour overs or brewing with the French press. The chances of bad coffee are minimal, whereas with espresso it's either good or bad ☺️

    hello, I love specialty coffee but I also like very much both lavazza qualità oro and illy classico. What temperature did you use? Its very easy to get them to taste very bitter and burnt like tasting if the temperature is too high, I think 89 degrees should be ok but if you are in the 90-93 range it could be too much.also these are italian coffees and I would use a more traditional dose like 15g for a double, 19 grams is too much and could not work with these blends.
    as someone else pointed out these are commercial coffee and there can be significant differences among batches

    i love the lavazza ORO. Very good balanced..In combination with a croissant or bread it is fabulous! In many restaurants and cafe's in holland i dont get better coffee. Always quite sour

      For me on other side normal black espresso with sugar was too sour :(
      Tryed even less or more grams finest or just fine grind but same result . Honestly one of worst i had yet

      I agree, quite well balanced and not bitter heavy as the reviewer found. It's all subjective i guess, I'm not into super-light acidic coffee but i know they're are many much more bitter coffees out there so was surprised by this assessment

    Excellent video. Obviously, like you, I prefer freshly roasted specialty coffee but as far as supermarket brands go I've been pleasantly surprised by Segafredo Selezione Crema.

    Came to your article as we were having problems with our Illy Classico..(using Sage Barista Express Impress).
    Firstly, in UK the price is similar to Lavazza. Secondly, we just aspire to a decent flat white at home, nothing more.
    Thirdly, we settled on Illy and had about 8 tins, every time we opened them we had nice rich smell no problem.
    We bought 3 more, opened one, smelled completely different, tasted horrible exactly as you describe….
    Opened another tin, same…
    Contacted Illy, they responded after a week, say they are investigating…but no more response after another week…
    Bought another can from different supermarket 35 miles away…it was exactly the same, horrible aroma on opening can, bitter taste.
    To find you saying exactly what our experience was actually a relief…
    We are ditching Illy…
    PS…I was seduced by the tins thinking it would help the freshness, I now learn any decent regular packaging works just as well…

    I have Lavazza Super Crema as a back-up and experiments...
    Aroma is unpleasant, but when done in Moka pot or espresso machine it's not that bad. Far from good, but not disgusting.
    Specialty is a way to go, definitely

    Fresh coffee is the only way to go. Just like any food or drink fresh is best. Pre packed coffee that is more than two weeks old lacks freshness. There are so many passionate coffee roasters around the world who know what their doing producing specialty coffee.It’s just a matter of learning how to dial them in and extract there flavour and after a while people will find their favourites. So much fun to be had searching the spectrum of coffee flavours out there.

      You both are plain wrong. Prepacked coffee can just stay as fresh as new roasted coffee if the package is made of good materials and made in a way that retains the freshness and taste from the roast date.
      There are several smaller coffee brands that have succeded in this.
      Its naive to think that prepacked coffee cant stay fresh.

    I have many problems finding an espresso that doesn't taste bitter. Even when I try using the beans from cafes that make a good espresso. It is very frustrating.

    Are the other Lavazza blends you refer to Super Crema, Gold Selection, Top Class and Gran Riserva?
    I tend to prefer these to Oro, and they are only a few dollars more expensive here in the USA. Though I'm sure it is different where you are.

      Lavazza Super Crema and Gran Espresso are far superior to the Oro and they suite my taste perfectly as I am not a fan of bright high acidity beans which baristas tend to favour. Invest in a proper vacuum sealed jar and you can’t go wrong with either, Gran Espresso is my go to and really easy to dial in even without micro adjustment, can usually find 3 macro settings that work with my sette 30.

      They're difficult to get here in Australia, I'd need to order them from the US and it would cost around $50 per kg. Plus this video is about what's easily available, not necessarily what's the best out there 😊

    I moved to NYC in 2000. People here liked Bustelo. I never had anything so bitter and harsh.Or some Starbucks dark roasts. The USA brought so much bitterness to the coffee cuo, but at last now people are waking up to decent coffee. WOuld be interesting to know what you'd think of Bustelo.

      I absolutely agree the local italian Cafes in NJ 20 30 yrs ago very few around these days made and espresso or cappuccino come si deve...ever since Starbucks everbody is making these bitter burnt harsh espresso...I had Illy at a kiosk in a mall what a waste I make better espresso at home...

      Starbucks learned it from Alfred Peet - a Dutchman. And he probably got it from Italy. Italian coffee is DARK DARK DARK especially in the south. These are milder Italian roasts.

      @@daveausamerika5408 I am from Italy. Italian roasts are not dark. Just look at the most popular coffee brand's roasts. Lavazza Oro is medium/MEDIUM LIGHT. Lavazza Rossa is MEDIUM. Coffee in Italy does not taste as burnt and bitter as Starbucks. I was in Italy in May, and never had a dark roast coffee like Starbucks in the USA while there. It sounds like you have not drunk enough coffee in Italy. How many times have you been there?

    Hi . I saw almost all videos, very nice work you are doing, but just want to ask you 2 question . First one if you did on your machine the spring mod to lower brewing pressure and second I want to buy a grinder and I don't know witch on to choose between sette 270 or eureka mignon silenzio or specialita.

      I already have the spring mod. Regarding the grinders, I'd suggest looking up reviews of all the models you're interested in and then buying whichever you like best.

    I tried danesi , lavazza oro , crema and untill now could find a brand better than illy. It’s pricy but no doubt illy Classico is the best I found .. no matter I try to find a replacement to illy due to price I end up going back to illy….

    I just tried the ORO, really didn't like it. It's a very strong taste with kind of rusted steel taste, so much that I thought I was doing something wrong. I just bought the Espresso Barista Perfetto, hopefully it's better, but later I'll try the professional blue bags. Anyway, ORO doesn't work with my tastes at all!

    For me any coffee (bag) which doesnt have a roasting date is a big no no and most of counter coffee dont have it.

    We have reviewed both Illy and Lavazza Oro in our channel and we were surprised to find that illy made a poor performance. Oro is far superior to Illy from our findings. Why Illy pack such silly quality beans in such a nice airtight tin is beyond me! :)

    One more thing. Coffee that loses its freshness doesnt necessarily have to taste worse or bad, some people prefer the taste in similar way people like a certain wine better several days after its opening.
    i brought a bag of newly roasted blend from a roastery which i first wasnt overwhelmed but after a week when the coffee started to lose its freshness i liked it much more and felt the taste was getting better.
    Just like wine or some other beverages, coffee doesnt always taste better fresh. It depends alot on what type of coffee it is, where it comes from,the climate and environment, how its harvested and roasted.

    I always found Illy caffè to be difficult to grind. For years, I tried it from time to time and was always disappointed, and yet bars serving Illy never disappointed me. Then I modified my Gaggia MDF grinder and made it stepless. When I bought another can of Illy, after a bit of trial and error I found the right grinding and I could appreciate it, I found it different and very interesting, with berry aromas. Overall I tend not to like much 100% arabica and therefore I don't consume neither Illy nor Lavazza Oro in general. Bars which serve Illy always give you a very interesting cup but I do find the grinding to be tricky and I suspect this experiment leaves something to be desired on the correct recipe for this particular blend. I think there was some bias at work here, due also to the very high price on the Australian market. Here in Italy Illy costs around €25 per kg, which compares with around €14 for a Lavazza Qualità Rossa which is the king of the market and has an average price. Illy is typically the most expensive in the supermarket wall, but it's not that expensive as it is in Australia. I think the poster was moved by a sense of antipathy for this high price, and wanted to "punish" this producer without carefully looking for the right recipe for this blend. No coffee is better than the barista making it. Also, with all due respect for a Baby Gaggia (my machine, bought in 2001) that's not the kind of machine to be used to seriously compare coffee blends, because there might be an idiosyncrasy between that blend and machine (pressure, temperature, pump "behaviour", this is a very simple machine and one cannot fine tune anything, the temperature of extraction might just have been too high, you leave the machine on all the time and this can give you an overextracted cup if you don't let the machine rest a bit). Overall I can say that I can often obtain a very good cup at home with most blends, but the most "finicky" blend to play with, at home, in my 20-more years experience, was the Illy. That said, all the test has some element of absurdity in it, if I had to buy that Australian coffee in Italy, if I found it, I would probably pay it twice as much in Italy as in Australia, while I would pay the Illy half the price in Italy as compared to Australia, which means the same comparison would show the Australian coffee costs 4x the Illy, in Italy. It's not a fair comparison and I think it is flawed in many ways. Italian wine costs absurd prices in Australia and Australian wine doesn't exist in Italy, a comparison between two completely different distribution realities (Illy certainly cannot have the distribution efficiency in Australia that it enjoys in Italy) doesn't make any sense. And yes, by all means when in Australia, buy Australian coffee! Finally, the styles of those coffees are completely different, and it is like comparing a limousine with a coupé, and then saying well, the limousine doesn't handle corners very well.

    Specialty coffee is better, but all the toaster are not good as well to give you good coffee beans, I tested all the specialty coffees, always the same problem of toasting. As for Oro is very good it gives you the classical cup of coffee. You can feel dark chocolate and cinnamon in Oro.
    So to resume there is no big difference between Oro and other coffees of specialty and sometimes Oro is better 😂
    For this moment I prefer to teoste my coffee beans by myself or buy Oro

    Illy makes... nice cups and mugs. Though Lavazza is a bit funky tasting as well, they're both heavily commercialized coffee brands, it's about quantity over quality.

      I disagree. Ive tasted dozens of both supermarket and speciality coffee and the only few supermarket brands that comes close to speciality coffee in terms of quality is Lavazza, Zoegas, Arvid Nordquist and Cafego.
      Lavazza has some really good quality roasts such as Gran riserva which is not as commercial as oro and qualita oro.

      @@Chrontard I stick with brands that stamp the roast date on the bag and are within a month from the roast date. Peet's is my go-to lately as far as big-brand coffee.

    First of all who ever charged you 15$ for 250g Illy gave you who knows what inside.....
    I don't know a place in the world who charges that much for mentioned coffe. Maybe if they straigh up robbing you.
    Second i dont understand review where person doesen't record the flow or any other details besides them talking what they tasted and how it was for them... as someone who tried lavazza(crema,oro), illy(med. Dark), and bunch of specialty coffe. I know the perks of fresh roasted coffe, the smell the aroma the flow, texture, balanced taste. But please, dissing Illy like that I get it you dont like it , but "burned shoe" and "disqusting" I can only assume Illy didn't wanted to pay for advertising.... 🤷

      I'm starting to think that he bought a bad batch or even a fake one, Illy Classico is meant to be a medium or slightly darker than medium roast and he said that the beans were a lot more darker than the Lavazza Oro (wtf?). Also, as espresso, Illy Classico is really sweet and gentle (no ashy or burnt shoe aftertaste and taste), the acidity is incredibly balanced and the aroma is superb (for a commercial coffee). Which is a very different description than the one in the video.
      Also, a lot of people in the comments are comparing Illy to Super Crema or other coffee that has some part of Robusta in it, I don't get what's happening here lol

    Wrong recipe for the Illy. This is traditional IT espresso blend/roast. Max 14 grams in, 50gr out, max 20 sec. It's a dark roast, following the "moddern" standard you end up with overextracted, burnt espresso. There's actually official Illy paper with the recipe.

    I honestly don't know how tf Illy blend was so dark, I'm using only Illy Classico and it's a slightly darker than medium roast, very slightly, definitely not that dark. Also, when I open the can, the smell should fly in the air and it should be really sweet (and it is everytime), definitely not moldy nor disgusting. You probably bought a bad batch, maybe already opened (that explains the moldy, disgusting, probably rancid flavors)? You said it was a burnt shoe and the aftertaste was ashy, that's the farthest description possible because everytime I taste it it's sweet, gentle, with a lot of vegetal notes and a little fruity. Also, the acidity should be well balanced and absolutely not predominant. The aftertaste is everything but not ashy, really. Also, the price is too high, should be 9/10 dollars a can, not 15. Definitely a strange review about Illy Classico.

      The difference in palates also might be playing a role. Nothing wrong with enjoying that coffee, it's just not for me 😊
      Back in the day, Lavazza Oro was my favourite, couldn't imagine a day would come where I'd say it doesn't taste good. But after tasting high quality specialty grade coffee, and slowly developing the palate, the Oro became a last resort coffee 😂

I just found really unusual the darker tone of the beans in your can (as I can see in the video), and that (plus all the other things) made me wonder if it could have been a bad batch or anything 🤔 it's funny that I found the description you did about the specialty is nearly the same I would do about the Illy Classico, could almost perfectly fit, that's another reason why I'm skeptical about the "healthiness" of the batch you described. But I'm not here to convince you or to say that mine is the only truth, just explaining my point 😄

Before I was able to drink it even though it is very distant from any sort of specialty coffee but now everytime I'm going to grind it i can smell every possible rancid flavor, odd thing.     this is unfair comparison, the price is different when packaging is different too (weight & material), & I'm little confusing about Lavazza Oro, you said it has some bitterness & as i know I'ts Arabica 100% ! unlesse i'ts dark roasted.

    What tastes better to whom? Subjective. I prefer the richer bolder notes from European specialty coffees (mostly blends but some single origin), Jamaican, and some African. Most people around here would probably pick Columbian. I've bought Maxwell House, Folger's, Yuban, Dirty Feet, and the more expensive big brand "Burnt Awful." Maxwell House classic and some Folger's.. Yuban..are alright for cheaper coffee but they're best within the first 7-10 days of opening the package. I've always had a taste for quality but I don't always have the budget for it. And since I'm balanced budget some things aren't always enjoyed. I have some.. friends who bring home in excess of 6000 a month with ultra low mortgage and relatively inexpensive car payment and are broke every month dipping in deeper & deeper. I'd have 2 banks full of money. I have no idea what they do with their money and I'm sure they don't know either.

    You are wrong about the packaging.
    Prepacked coffee can just stay as fresh as new roasted coffee if the package is made of good materials and made in a way that retains the freshness and taste from the roast date.
    There are several smaller coffee brands in the world that have succeded in this because they know how to prepack their coffee without loosing its freshness .
    The package that large worldwide brands such as starbucks uses are massproduced and made in a cheaper material that retains the freshness poorly.

    Update: after trying it again a few times I don’t know why it tasted good to me the first time. Tastes pretty bad to me now.
    Seems like you got a bad batch with what you’re describing with how bad Illy is. It shouldn’t be as bad as you’re describing IMO. I wonder if they have unreliable batches. I know Aldi burns their fair trade a lot unfortunately (not the best coffee at all and honestly on the side of being a bad coffee, but cheap and fair trade single origin whole bean).
    I actually prefer Illy for being served with milk over Panther’s Columbia “Israel Salazar” - maybe I just got lucky with it? I suspect that ironically they do a bad job with whole bean and that their ground is better even though that loses some quality. Not sure why that would be the case if it is.
    My opinion is Illy is not as good or close to a person’s favorite speciality, but better than most espresso in the store. I’d say Lavazza or Illy depending on preference are decent choices until you find your preferred single origin speciality coffee.

      That's fair enough mate, I understand what you're saying. In my opinion, the type of person who enjoys the classic italian espresso profile, wouldn't think there was anything wrong with Illy.
      The person that enjoys the "new age" specialty coffee flavour profile would pick up on what I'm talking about 10/10 times.
      To summarise, nothing wrong with either, at the end of the day we should just be thankful we have a choice which beans we are going to buy and enjoy 😊

    Never had a good impression from illy considering its priced premium. Clearly the beans are too dark roasted which suggests they're roasting cheap old beans. Could even be fake.

    I'm going through lavazza espresso range right now and it's Terrible for me, not very full bodied at all, very bland taste, no interesting notes.
    I'm fairly new to making my own espresso at home (1 year)​ so I guess this is just how they like it in Italy.
