- Looking for the best coffee beans to buy from Coles Supermarket? Look no further! In this video, we put 12 bags of medium roast beans to the test to see which ones are worth sipping and which ones are worth skipping. Our blind taste test includes brands that are widely available across Australia's biggest supermarket, Coles. We looked for sweetness, enjoyable fruit-like acidity, brightness, and no over-the-top harsh bitterness or dry ashy flavours. We also made sure to use the same recipe for each coffee to keep things fair and consistent.

Join us as we take you through each round of our taste test, with the top three battling it out for the top spot. We'll also give you our honest opinions on the overall quality of supermarket coffee, and why we believe it's worth exploring other options beyond the supermarket shelves.
I'd like to make a special mention to my top 5 beans on the day - as while this was a randomised sorting of which beans would go head to head, there appeared a few bags that were eliminated early and I believe would have made for better FINALS.
So my top 5, in order are:
1. Sensory Lab Steadfast
2. Daley St Medium
3. Daley St Organic
4. DC Critical ( as on several more brews, and in lieu of less enjoyable bags, this was alright.)
5. Vittoria Latte ( My favourite coffee that I would use for milk-based drinks. very smooth.= - and is designed exactly for milk-based drinks.)

OMG - I love this review! I enjoy all Joshua's reviews and educational videos and have been inspired to pick up my coffee game - thanks Joshua, but this is so useful for my everyday brew considerations!
It would be great to see some other major brands tested too in the future, this is such a good idea, you could almost spin off a new series of videos, if you can contain the caffeine!
Would be great to keep these tasting videos going and why not introduce some of the independent brews too.
Now this may be sacrilege for some, but a review just of decaffeinated roasts only would also be a great resource - I know many now choose decaf for their late afternoon or evening brew, but there's never as much choice.
Obviously there are so many amazing individual specialty roasters out there, but they are not always quite so accessible all over the country and if you can't get to them in your local shops then their cost and the delivery timing both go up and become considerations when you need to factor shipping in as well - but it would be great to see some consistent independent reviews.
So I think at some point most of us will have stood in the local Supermarket aisle contemplating and comparing different mainstream roasts. There's nothing worse than suffering decision fatigue from overwhelm, when you suddenly loose 15 minutes in the aisle still staring at bag after bag of coffee😒 all claiming pretty much the same benefits and tasting notes🤷♂ - whilst the rest of the family are through the checkout and packing the car! 😊
The ability to see Josh try all these out and provide an independent viewpoint - even if maybe his preferences may not be ours - its still an amazing resource to get a common reviewer to try such a selection out. 👍👍
I know from experience just using that Intensity rating from the bags means pretty much nothing from one brand to another for me when tried at home imho since I never have maybe more than two brands open to compare and never actually make an espresso back to back - instead I tend to work my way through one bag of coffee and then move onto another and never making the proper effort to truly compare tasting notes - so this was a great video - thank-you!
I even feel inspired to try some back to back testing myself now too!
Wow thanks so much ! 100% to everything you said too 👌
Yeah my biggest gripe with supermaket beans is the roast date. Usually at least 6 weeks old, if they even bother to print it onto the bag at all. Out of the pick I'd also pick Sensory Lab. Campos is sold at Woolies too, a good pick out amongst the options.
Yeah it appeared like 12 months was the standard shelf life. There were some bags that had printed Roast Dates, and of those they were all 2-3months old. At that point I’d prefer not to know lol
Yes Campos is a good brand, better than most, but now that I roast my own coffee i can clearly taste the differance
Good job👍🏻... can't wait to see u do one from Woolies 😊
this is so useful....i buy from supermarkets as the money constraint. Even supermarket beans, there are so many to choose from. Hope you will do one from woolworths
Aldi ones are fantastic, $15 a kg, best value for $ spent before getting expensive and niche
For sure! I've already noticed there are some carry-overs across both Supermarkets. Stay tuned 🫶
@@AlternativeBrewing BTW, how does it feel after drinking 12 cups of espressos..... :)
@@daniellonetree6131 right?
I’d be high as a kite.
Very clever testing video and so much information. I always shop for beans from my local IGA because I can find lots of different blends from the local Roastery. Thank you so much and thank you IGA.
WA btw
thanks for watching
Keep up the great work sir! Your channel is full of fun and informative contents. It was also interesting to see what kind of supermarket coffees are being offered in Australia.
thanks so much!
Awesome, thank you! This is so helpful for those of us here in Australia. Sometimes I find myself tempted to buy supermarket coffee (e.g. if I run out). This video is super helpful for that. I would love to see you do a similar video for filter coffee in the future, as that's my 'go to' most often.
Thanks so much! I'd be extremely surprised if many supermarkets carry Filter coffee sadly ... The Coles I went to, to buy this espresso coffee didn't.
Outstanding video. As a punter who has just started grinding my coffee, I've found this very informative. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, will do!
I've tried all of those cofees and the sensory lab was my favorite as well. Their Organic blend from Sensory lab is probably the best from Coles. Woolworths sometimes has a Campos Honduras single origin which I think is my favourite supermarket coffe.
bought my Delonghi magnifica Evo today and this video is perfect to start with coffee beans brand options. Kudos mate I really need this video.
Nice one!

Thanks for doing this for us, but I think I'll stick to small batch, locally roasted beans. Also, 12 espressos in one sitting... 😂
it was brutal !
Can we have a Woolies version?
You bet
Followed by Aldi’s version, please
Aldi actually has fantastic coffee surprisingly
Grinders surprisingly good, for decaf I don’t mind fair trade ❤ great review
Thanks for watching!
For supermarket coffees I like the Daley St Medium - Dark but I use an Aeropress not a moka pot or Espresso machine. I think grind and brewing method make a difference flavour wise. I like that it has balanced sweetness and acidity and minimal bitterness.
Thanks for sharing!
Came here to say the same! I use a medium grind for those beans + Aeropress - great black and with soy milk, the raspberry notes really sing in the milk 🤤
Oh man, josh crashed by the 4th round 😂 great video 👏
Haha thanks! I was feeling it.
A good review of some of the beans I buy. Daley St is always on my list when on special. Vittoria Oro is bang on all the time The same goes for the Coles brand, up there and has won awards over top brands. But, my espresso machine will produce coffee different to yours, and taste. But, I only drink steamed milk coffee. I have a de Longhi Dedidica machine due to space limits. A great little machine at a great price. I don't have a coffee roaster close by, so Coles or Woolies. Some coffee shops will sell you their beans at a premium price.
You can find Campos at Woolies that have been roasted within a few weeks... If your lucky and live near a busy supermarket. I'll stick to beans from good cafes/ roasters though
does anyone have Brewista X Series kettle? How does it compare to the Artisan line up? Thinking of getting the 600ml version
Keen to hear your thoughts on the ALDI beans 👀
What about costco =P
That’s a coincidence, I have a friend who wants to know, too! 😅
Hey there! I love watching your channel!
Just curious, i wanna know… have you try Outin Nano Portable Espresso machine?
Not yet ! But it's on my radar! I'll dare say it'll be tested at some point here ! Thanks for the kind words 😀
@@AlternativeBrewing i see. Well looking forward to it!
interesting. i still cant work out what i like. when i was loading a cup with sugar i got some almost liquor/jam flavours from stuff like lavazza oro. but im cutting sugar out, and too lazy to add milk with every cup, and as the weather gets colder i find myself being more comfortable with the chocolate, but not bitter, flavours. long black. i forget what the others you mentioned, machiatto and piccolo, are supposed to be.
long black is the way to go 👌 The others were all milk coffees
Will say with the dc critical hit its more targeted to be drank in a cold brew straight black form
nice! thanks I'll have to try that 👌
Something I was surprised by when I got more into coffee, is that many Roasters sell better *and cheaper* beans when compared to the premium supermarket brands. I've had some stellar stuff at under $40/kg.
I'll give one shoutout to Totoro from Roastville in Sydney.
Hey Josh, I’m interested in the grinder and coffee machine you use for these comparisons.
sure! 👌 alternativebrewing.com.au/products/rancilio-silvia-pro-coffee-machine & the alternativebrewing.com.au/products/coffee-tech-df64-single-dose-grinder
I really like the sensory lab organic in an espresso
That's funny because that's my least favourite haha. I think the roast might be too light for my cheap Dedica to pull well. Woolloomooloo from Toby's Estate works best for me.
@Mandragara I've only had there filter coffee but it's delicious 😋
I assume that the much-publicised Five Senses supermarket range has all but disappeared. FWIW I've never seen them at any of my local Coles stores.
In the description, I list my ultimate top 5 beans - not based on the randomised A/B tasting. There are a couple that do very well
I prefer an italian dark roast. Just personal preference.
Has anyone tried the Othersky brand at Coles?
Damn that's an OG coles logo, 2000s vibes
much like the coffee beans imho 😏
Any plan to test the much loved ALDI beans 😂
in the works 👌
Is it still worth buying expensive locally roasted beans if I'm not single dosing and just chucking a whole bag of beans in the hopper? Using the Breville smart grinder
Yes - I would say yes. Try it once - treat yourself and see if you enjoy it any more than regular store bought beans.
Hi Josh, do you want to try my roast coffee from WA?
hey, thanks so much for the offer 🫶 - just covering Supermarket coffees at the moment 👌
@Alternative Brewing is all good, mate 👍
I bought the one you recommended, but within a month it was discontinued. Kiss of death?
I'm sorry! possibly hahaha in the description below - I outlined my top 5. Hopefully there's another you can count on 👍
Zendtvelds...
Entertaining but your second round didn’t match your two clear first round winners.
But the amateur coffee drinker hates acidic coffee
It's true. If I were a darker or heavy bodied coffee drinker I would have presented this. And yes, I prefer some sweet / acid in the coffee flavour - as I only drink black coffee ost days. I would do the dark roasts no favours if reviewing them 🫶
@@AlternativeBrewing can you please do another video like this but for milk drinks which would require a darker roast? Or maybe a video about capsule coffees available in the supermarket?
Try Woolies instead, they have campos beans which are lovely.
Vottoria coffee worst coffee ever
I was quite surprised by the Vittoria, but not that much by the Espresso blend
@@AlternativeBrewing I've tried some of their coffee, but now that I roast my own coffee, I can taste the flavours much better, and even friends of mine have said that my home roasted coffee is almost as good as local coffee roasters 🙂
