      I'm delighted by this
but hey man I just wanted to say I think it's really important you not overload yourself or stick yourself with rigid rules and goals-generally speaking you're gonna have a much harder time saying "I will only do videos that I'm absolutely pouring my everything into" and maybe disappointing yourself
than just going with what your life looks like at any moment. I'm not trying to discourage you in any way. I'm saying I, at least, and most likely many others are here for all of the content you put out, whether it's got everything you could possibly provide or it's a quick 12 min vid on your GotY. Do what comes naturally and take care of yourself. We love you homie

I've been in a lull myself, my life is great & comfortable but I feel it has become stagnant, I don't have any motivation to really go out there and "live". Would love to hear your thoughts on how you finally broke out of your existential prison.

I just wanted to say that while 2021 wasn’t too terrible of a year for me, Endwalker also hit me in ways that made me realize I had some stuff to sort out and deal with. I applaud you wanting to push for greater heights but also want to say that in no way did I feel like your videos weren’t delivering. You’ve always had a tight script and meaningfully long videos that I enjoy and rewatch regularly.

  • @darinholm8795

I can relate so hard to the sentiments of stagnation and feeling like having had fun isn't enough at the end of it. 2021 was such a nothing year, it was one where basically every single day bled into the next.
I did, however, really relate to your sentiments about some games just appealing to base urges. I feel the same with roguelikes. The feeling of starting from scratch and becoming something else is cathartic I suppose.
Great video KingK, hope you have an awesome 2022.

Surprisingly this was my GOTY as well, and I’ve not even made it to Stormblood yet, nor am I an MMO guy, but ARR and HW blew me away. I lost my job this past summer and found the game during my time off, and then when I later got a job, the consistency of being able to come home from a stressful day at work and run a dungeon, mess around in the Gold Saucer, look for armor on the market board or just goof around with FC members was so great to have. Ended up spending 300 hours in the game and I still have 3 full expansions to play, which is just nuts. I never in a million years would have thought that FFXIV would ever be my GOTY but it really is something special.

im sorry but how can you say you dont like MMOs but this is your goty?? this is literally the most repetitive and boring MMO experience ive ever had and i play WoW...

    • @NerdStrikesBack
      @NerdStrikesBack Před 2 lety +4

@@IAmWhiteEagle I’ve never been an MMO guy but that doesn’t mean the whole genre wasn’t for me, just that I hadn’t put the time in to get invested in one before. MMOs are traditionally known as a genre where you have to push through the beginning bits to get to the good stuff and that had always been the roadblock for me, but the combination of FFXIV’s intriguing story and the massive positive reception of the community helped me keep playing until I came to enjoy it myself.
That latter part especially cannot be understated, take WoW as the alternative: for the last 4 years or so all I have heard from WoW players is how bad the game is now and how much better it used to be, so why would I put in the time to keep playing it and understand its systems when it seems like even its long-term players don’t enjoy it anymore?
The last thing I would say is that I think FFXIV does an amazing job at introducing players to multiplayer content, I played a bit of SWTOR several years ago but never got into it much because I just wanted to play by myself and not interact with anyone. On the flip side, dungeons and trials are some of my favorite content in FFXIV and I’ve become part of an active FC where I have spent several hours just goofing off with them instead of doing what I planned solo. I got into XIV expecting to just run through the story as if it was a single player RPG and instead ended up really loving the community aspect. That goes a long way.

    • @2la84me
      @2la84me Před 2 lety +1

@@IAmWhiteEagle As I am very similar I also feel a need to answer your query.
I just plain like Final Fantasy and I wanted to see what the noise was all about. I really actually don't like MMOs. They're boring and yes, very often repetitive. However, and this is the lynchpin of my personal reasoning, I think the story is really good! A Realm Reborn is a interesting and carefully laid story. The MMO parts mainly arise from duty finding and everything else that is littered around the world to distract you should you want a break from the Main Scenario, which is a good practice; afterall we all like interesting side quests and there's an abundance of interesting and fun ones to find.
However as many will also tell you just like KingK (and NeverKnowsBest) has, the story is the main dish and I can agree as I've finished ALL of the free trial Main Scenario (end of Heavensward) and think it's a well worthy Final Fantasy game.
Do I think it's perfect? Hell no, it's a MMO with MMO shit in there I don't like. I don't like tab targeting, I don't like being forced into a duty, I don't like the Crystal Tower, I don't like slow mount speed until the game says you're good to fly, and I don't like the Taru Tarus (as amusing as they are they destroy any tension in a scene for me. Except Queen Taru Taru and Sidekick Secretary Taru Taru. They are both play their respective roles well and size doesn't stop their impact....as it shouldn't because they are main characters), I don't like optional daily quests, and I can just keep going on things l dislike because there's a lot. The important point is that the story and characters have engaged and endeared themselves to me, the community has been good to me, I like seeing interesting sights, and there's plenty more I could name that I like. That's just how it is.
Hopefully that suffices as an answer

"Did you find... fulfillment?", when I got asked this thing at a very specific moment on EW, with all those back memories from all my journey on FFXIV, it felt so personal, so unique as a video game moment, as I was thinking at all those 8 years of playing FFXIV regulary, It's litteraly something I can say that it was a part in my life, accompagnied me from a time I was in deep depression and lost at 18y old, spending my days on ARR Mor Dhona, meeting another people, seeing them creating communities and organising stuff I was happy to be a part of, but also burning my time trying to achieve some raids for the sake of geeting this sense of "fulfillment" from those few seconds of calm after killing strong foes, such as Zenos in someway, I was searching this little light from hours and hours of fighting Phoenix, Bahamut, Nael, always ending feeling a little hollow after finally killing them.
That is, perhaps, another thing about FFXIV Endwalker narrative I find really touching is that how it can gives really precise and specific thematics and character developpements who can absolutly be miss or hit for a lot of people, such as Hermes or Zenos, even characters like Alphinaud in someway, those characters can be seen totally as aliens or whiners, and so the hours spending with them can be really overwhelming, but when it hits, God, it feels so great to see all those stuff resonating with ourselves, as Hermes, Zenos ans so much other characters can be a part of myself on some point on my life journey, on my thinking, on my readings. It's something who gives me this vibe that when Shadowbringers was a banger of an extension, it wasnt as personal and unique as Endwalker is, atleast for me, and perhaps for a lot of people who lived and grew alongside FFXIV, and finally found fulfillment on their own.

Every single time I've come back to 14, whether it's to get back around to playing stormblood, finally being able to purchase ShB as an unemployed HS student, or finally having time during break to get through endwalker queues, I am so surprised to rediscover what the game means to me. I feel like over the past 2 years I've stretched myself thin to my friends trying to explain why this game with such a high cost and alien mechanics to those unused to MMOs is worth it. But really, it's been a source of respite over my high school years, this slow burn of a story. A lot of people hate the moniker that a game might take so long to 'get good' or in FF14's case get Great. But after EXPERIENCING the end of Endwalker's MSQ, I could literally do it all over again if I had the time. It's only meant so much because of the time I took, not just to complete the story, but to absorb the dialogue and play with friends. Ff14's biggest strength is that it respects the time the player puts into the game not by giving them only temporary ingame strength, but by acknowledging their efforts in the story. The improvements made in the most recent two expansions and the consistency the game has showcased ever since it's revamp make me excited just to see what they'll do with the building blocks they've got now that the current MSQ line is over. In the meantime I'll just have to wear myself out enough in my own life to make coming back to the next quest that much more worth it.

Brother King; I hear you, I support you!
    Now please hear me.
2012 was one of my darkest periods in life. I was riding on the back of addiction recovery. I left my career, pushing forward with no friends and no sense of direction. During this time, I found a game, "The Secret World". I was soon swept up, captivated by the mechanical depth and beautifully articulated storyline. TSW granted me freedom. I was able to escape.
It assisted my growth as a man. What started as a fun way to forget my pain became a healthy outlet to work through trauma. I was able to regain (and develop) the many aspects leadership which I had either lost or desired. Hard work and devotion to my community granted me the strength to overcome life's obstacles. I took a leap and moved down South, leaving behind the environment that had haunted me for so many years.
Life isn't perfect, it never will be....but a decade on, I wouldn't change a single lesson or experience from my time playing TSW.

2021 wasn't all that eventful in terms of big releases, but we did get some certified bangers, especially from Nintendo.
I haven't taken the plunge into FF XIV, so I can't comment on it, but I can say without a doubt that the most significant one for my money was Metroid Dread. Nearly two decades of anticipation for Metroid 5, and it didn't fail to deliver. That's all I could ever ask for. Dread alone made 2021 for me.
Here's to 2022 consuming my life with Pokemon Legends and BotW 2.

Sorry but Nintendo slacked off this year. BOTW 2 will release in Spring of 2023 and Pokemon Legends was extremely underwhelming due to Game Freak’s sudden confirmation of Gen 9.
Honestly, I didn’t play any big games or releases in 2021 but I did get the chance to experience the NieR series with Automata and Replicant, and I also played It Takes Two with my best friend and throughly enjoyed it (despite its lack of replayability)

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, and not being candid about them.
Final Fantasy 14 is more than a great game. I think it's a genuinely important one. Started my journey two and a half years ago, but didn't set out in earnest until february this year. It has provided me with so many amazing moments I'll cherish forever, but what I find the most important may be the lessons it has teached me and the human element. The goofs at the aetheryte plaza in Limsa Lominsa, the random fishing adventures with folks from our FC, the cheering at the weekly Jumbo Cactpot draw. How we struggle together to figure out the raids, the helpful hands and elation when everything comes together. The shared memes and laughter and frustration when the queuetimes became ridiculous. Yes, even the queuetimes have come to provide some precious memories.
In a year where I've felt the most alone in my entire life, FF14 has been there. It's comforting and human.

Endwalker for me. I felt that Endwalker's Story fell flat. I agree that once the 83 quests were done, I was very interested on where the story was heading. And when I hit the 5th area I was even more excited to learn more but by the end of that same area, I was deflated. I just completely disconnected. I wasn't interested or intrigued with the story from then on. The final area while the themes of the meaning of life were interesting to ponder. The game has used these same themes in other previous content and stories and the characters who challenge those themes felt like they were summarizing their arcs again just in case we forgot..
Even the final trial wasn't exciting for me thematically.
However all that said. The dungeons were fun. The Trials were immensely enjoyable. I am excited for the journey to come after. The tease of all these locations we will visit makes me so excited. I am excited for the future but 6.0 by itself didn't feel like a good finale. It felt like a good amount of setup for the future.
So overall I enjoyed the Endwalker, just not in the ways I wanted to.

I picked up final fantasy 14 during a time when I was not in a great place mentally. I was in a new city and I had nothing to do and no one to spend my time with. I desperately just wanted something to consume my time. I picked up final fantasy 14 on a whim as a time sink. Honestly through all of a realm reborn thats all it was to me. It wasn't until the set up for heavensward that I started feeling invested in the story, in the world and characters and every little detail. And now it's all culminated in a beautiful story that seems to address the very reasons I picked up the game in the first place. It honestly is a journey I'll never forget as sappy as that sounds, and it left me feeling far more calm than I have in a long time.

My GOTY is Outer Wilds: Echoes of the Eye. Even as a DLC it's still the best thing I played this year, and it's more of an Outer Wilds 1.5 than a DLC imo. This year was actually pretty slow for me, and the only games I played from this year that I would consider AMAZING were Psychonauts 2, Metroid Dread, Deathloop, Halo Infinite, and Loop Hero. But Outer Wilds is my favorite game of all time, and getting an expansion that was just as amazing as the original game makes it worth being crowned my GOTY even though it's technically not a full game.

KingK, I don’t know if this viewpoint will help you or not, but I would like to share an answer that helped me get over my anxiety about the meaning of life and death.
Every Christmas I would always ask for a new toy or video game from my parents. I don’t regret doing this because of how much fun I had with said gifts. During that time I never questioned why I would have such a great time playing a video game, I just knew they were fun.
    Fast forward to last year:
Im living near my college campus, and I’ve recently gotten into PC gaming. At first everything was great, but I couldn’t help but feel that every new game I played felt less fun. I didn’t know why. I thought I might just be growing out of my gaming hobby. Which is odd because it is my biggest hobby. I still couldn’t get a definitive answer.
When I came home for the holidays I (of course) played some games with my younger siblings and friends who came over to visit. Immediately, I was having the time of my life playing video games. Whether it was all of us screaming during Mario Party or even all of them watching me play a horror game I refused to play alone.
When I went back to school I realized it was because I was with the people I loved the most (my family and close friends) that I had such a good time with the games. I realized there were probably plenty of times when my siblings wanted to play something besides what I was playing but instead they chose to spend time either watching me play or playing with me. It was the love I had for my family and friends that really made all of those games so much fun.
They loved me by choosing to spend time with me rather than themselves.
This is one of many experiences I’ve had that has helped me to understand what I believe the meaning of life and death is.
    It is LOVE.
Anything in this world can bring people joy (the video games certainly did).
But Love can bring people Peace in their hearts and minds.
It’s hard to explain, but I experience this sensation every time I go out of my way to do something kind for someone else. Especially if they give me nothing in return, because I know in my heart I’ve done what is right. I know that if I want peace in my heart I can’t live for myself.
I can’t just buy all the cool stuff I want and expect to be truly happy and peaceful.
I have to spend myself for others.
I have to die to myself (not focus on my wants and desires over others) even in small ways in order to live for others.
That’s how I give my love to other people. I live for them, and I die for them.
The meaning of life is to live for others.
The meaning of death is to die for others.
Death will never scare me again, because I know that as long and I’m trying to love others over myself everyday, I will Rest In Peace every night.
I’m not asking you to succeed. I know we all fail at love because none of us are perfect.
It’s the trying that is most important.
I pray that these words can bring you some peace.

Endwalker, and ruminating on XIV as a whole after finishing it, really propelled this game into my top 5 easily. I think at this point it may be my second favorite game ever made. Its legacy is just so undeniably incredible at this point. It inspires me that something as resonating as Endwalker can eventually be birthed out of the deeply flawed product that was the original XIV Online (1.0). This expansion seriously felt like every individual person on that development team was firing on all cylinders. It's one of those things I look at and am seriously in disbelief that humans made this.
I have the utmost envy for people who've been playing this story for the entire journey, because I can't imagine Endwalker having any less than some of the best long term payoffs in gaming as a whole. Both mechanically and in terms of its writing.

Great video. As someone who has a bit of a nihilistic streak, I was also greatly affected by Endwalker's themes and story, particularly the final zone to the end of MSQ. All I've done since beating the MSQ is ruminate on it and no game has done that to me since SOMA when it came out. Looking forward to future of your channel, wishing you lots of success and happiness.

Biggest issue I had with Shadowbringers was the fact that it felt like progressing in virtually every destination required you to do chore after chore just to ingratiate yourself with the right person enough to get their help or permission to move on. Sure it usually led to somewhere interesting, but it became repetitive and asked too much of you after a while.
Endwalker managed to contextualize every quest (mostly) in a way that made them feel like you were doing something that mattered.
I still loved the locations in Norvrandt and the high points of Shadowbringers, which were numerous. I just thought the pacing was actually pretty abysmal at times, especially considering how beloved the expansion is.

On the note of the year blending together that has been the case for me in terms of gaming. Idk what games I finished or played this year vs last year. If I played P4 Golden this year then that is my GotY, if I didn't then it is SMT: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker.

My 2021 GOTY is a game that had some updated edition launch in 2021, but I had never played it before, and that's Nier Automata. I kept seeing the 'Become as Gods Edition' being advertised, and decided to pull the trigger. My only regret is I can never experience that game for the first time again. So, so good, and one of my top games of all time.
As for EW, while it had some highs (cutscene at the end of the 5th area, anyone?), It didn't land nearly as well with me as ShB. ShB felt a lot more grounded/realistic, and although "realistic" is a strange word to use when playing a game like FF14, it did impact my overall impressions of EW versus ShB. Though, I totally agree, the mechanics of EW (except maybe those "follow undetected" quests), including the dungeons, are more evolved/engaging than ShB's were.

As a person that never had a desire to go near MMO's I'm finding it amazing and welcoming. Not only in the community but in its design. While I certainly want to get through the story I don't feel forced to (though all the rave reviews of Endwalker do make me want to rush). It's a game that invites you to take your time at your pace which I didn't release is a rarity in games. I'm looking forward to my journey to Endwalker. I know it's going to be a good one.

I love Endwalker, but I will say the Lopporit chores killed me. The quests get a little repetitive at points. That being said…the story blew me away. It had one of the best climaxes I’ve seen in a game. The game straight up had me crying walking into the final boss because of how intense it was. I agree whole heartedly on your choice. If there was never another expansion, I could be happy with this story.

Although I did prefer the Shadowbringers pacing, the slow bit of Endwalker with the one music track over and over again was pretty dire

Awesome video and I also think FFXIV is one of the best games I've played this year (even though I haven't actually been able to play it since early December due to the servers/my girlfriend and I's busy schedules/health issues preventing us from getting onto a sever and having only started on Halloween this year). For the month that I got to play it though, we had so much fun running around the world and growing accustomed to things. Seeing as the server issues are still pretty bad and we can't play the game still, we decided that I should cancel our subscription to it for a few more months and try revisiting it some time in the future, which I'm hoping we'll actually remember to do though.

There was one zone in particular in this expansion that I rather disliked because I felt like it went on way way waaaaay too long with exposition and... no actual real gameplay apart from talking moving and talking. (area 5), but overall I loved this expansion a great deal. Inversely area 4 gave me my favorite moments in the expansion. Amazing dungeons, a great ending (hard to nail a 10+ year long story ending but they did it) and some amazing music. I love the new Raids as well, the first wing was great and I look forward to more and now I'm working on leveling my other Jobs, crafting and gathering etc... It's been something I play every day and enjoy my time in it. Unlike WoW, which was like torturing myself. I WANT to log into FFXIV, I don't feel forced to.

MMOs are probably second only to life simulators for my least favorite video game genre. Final Fantasy XIV has a lot more that appeals to me than most (being a Final Fantasy game, having awesome music, having a shit ton of fun callbacks like raid bosses with Cloud of Darkness, Exdeath, and KEFKA), but the approach to gameplay and the thought of having to play for hundreds of hours is like kryptonite to me. But I really appreciate what this game is and accomplished, and I’m super happy Yoshi-P and his team are moving on to XVI, which looks like it’ll cater much more to my tastes.
