    From what I understand, that story about Ultima being useless is only true for the Famicom release.
    The real reason it sucks is that its damage scales based off how high each of your weapon/spell levels are. So that means if you had a level 16 Ultima spell but everything else was at 1, its base damage would be 116, but if you had a level 1 Ultima and everything else maxed out, its base damage is 1256.
    So basically the only way to use the spell is if you not only grind Ultima itself, but you also need to have grinded everything else to max or it is totally impotent. The only real upsides are 1) it scales with your skill levels instead of Intelligence/Spirit, so you can equip heavy armor on whoever's using it and they won't have any penalties for it and 2) it also ignores magic defense and evasion. Hardly worth a 3 Dungeon excursion

      @RegalPixelKing Před 2 lety +77

      Ultima was also not intended just useless in the Famicom release, it was bugged. Basically the programmer, Nasir Gebelli, messed up the coding for the Ultima spell, they even knew the spell was bugged, but the programmer was too lazy to fix it. His excuse for not fixing it was because of the "bs legends" thing brought up in this video. I'm honestly kind of surprised that he was not fired when pulling stuff like that. Regardless, he ended up also being the main programmer for FF3 on the Famicom, Origins Remake of 1 and II on PS1, and the port/demake of Origins, Dawn of Souls on the GBA.

    I'm really glad you ended up enjoying Final Fantasy I as much as you did! It's honestly a standout for me for just how unique a game it really is in the context of the series as a whole. The modest size of the main plot plus the highly-customizable nature of the player's party really makes it a fun game to just do a run through every now and again, trying out different party combinations. There ARE notable balance issues with it, such as Temper being stackable with both itself and Haste and just busted as hell ever since they fixed the glitch in the NES version that made it do nothing at all, but overall I think it's a really fun time! It's a light (but not shallow!), replayable, gameplay-focused experience that stands as a retroactive anomaly in a series that's come to be defined by its sweeping, dramatic storylines and longer playtimes. Not that what Final Fantasy is better known for is BAD, just that, in retrospect, how much it diverged from Final Fantasy I retroactively gave that first game a much stronger and more distinct identity within the series, since nothing else quite like it was ever done again in the later installments.
    Final Fantasy II is a game that, to be honest... I was initially kind of a detractor of, but, ironically, it was playing the NES version that really made me warm up to it and come to understand it on its own terms. Full disclosure, I AM a weirdo who unironically likes NES JRPG game design despite not really growing up with it, but I feel that FFII is just SUCH an ambitious game that does a LOT to really flesh itself out within the limitations of the NES's hardware. The recurring motif of the party coming back to civilization only to find that some major event went down in their absence was very likely born of not having the space or technology on the NES to actually show those events happening, but it really does a lot to make the world feel alive and to make the heroes feel like just one part of a larger resistance effort, the other members of which are carrying out their own missions just as you're carrying out yours. It's undeniably wonky in a number of ways, but it really just has way too much heart and passion and creativity packed into it for me not to love it.
    It's already been explained in the comments how Ultima works in FFII and that the bug is only in the Famicom original (IIRC the person who did it actually said it was a jab at how things that were very impressive for their time often feel underwhelming in practice relative to modern technology), but yeah, I've never really found Ultima to be too worth using, frankly. If you've been training its recipient in other magic spells, it'll, realistically, end up ON PAR with comparably-leveled Flare and Holy spells, but not noticeably better. As one might imagine, Ultima is significantly more useful for things like super-tough side dungeons that you're taking on with rigorously min-maxed characters, but in the main storyline... yeah, it's not that great.
    I also wanted to add that there actually WERE plans to have the party actually battle Leon every so often in earlier plot drafts, like a Pokemon rival. I'm still not really sure why they cut that, honestly. I realize this is beyond what would've been easy to do on the Famicom, but it would be neat to have the confrontation in Castle Palamecia initiate a battle with Leon that goes for a few rounds before the Emperor interrupts the fight rather than him showing up just before things actually come to blows.
    Regarding the leveling system, all versions of Final Fantasy II actually scale weapon and spell proficiency gain based on how the user's level with that weapon or spell relates to the strength of the enemies you're fighting! So it's actually faster to train spells and weapon types against stronger enemies rather than weaker. Weapon ranks in particular go up SUPER DUPER FAST up to about level 5 or so, so it's not at all unfeasible to train one character in more than just one or two weapon types. Worth noting, though, is that the scaling bonus only actually applies to the first use of a weapon or spell within a given battle, but it can be a pretty sizeable bonus if you're leveling lower-leveled ranks. This is, in my opinion, actually a kiiiinda smart anti-grinding measure? Or at least an anti-grinding-being-too-boring measure, since it makes it quicker to train proficiencies by getting into multiple different encounters wherein you use the abilities you want to level up once than to do so by drawing out individual battles to use them as much as you can in a single encounter.
    Strength, Spirit, and Intelligence don't really scale, though. The odds of them increasing are just X/46 (Strength), X/16 (Spirit), or X/26 (Intelligence), where X equals the number of times that character used an action that trains that stat in that encounter. Physical attacks obviously training Strength, White Magic casts training Spirit, and Black Magic casts training Intelligence. Worth noting; this is how it works in the Famicom original. It's possible the remakes completely changed the "Does this stat increase?" determination algorithms altogether, but at the very least, from anecdotal experience, they seem to have lowered the denominators in those fractions a bit to make the stats go up more frequently.
    On the same topic, a funny thing you can do that's unique to the Pixel Remaster is have a character fight with two Shields equipped, which, in the Pixel Remaster only, causes them to use unarmed attacks when they use the Attack command. They gain proficiency in unarmed attacks on top of above-average proficiency gain for Shields. It's gimmicky, but it might be fun for a really evasion-centric character build sometime. (For context, in prior versions, attacking with only Shields equipped to the hand slots just results in the character doing a little hop dance that has no effect besides granting Shield proficiency as though they'd attacked.)
    The DS version of Final Fantasy III was actually my first Final Fantasy EVER, though it does make some significant changes. You now have a main party of four named characters with personal designs who join one at a time over the course of the Sasune arc instead of just starting out with a full team of four basically-blank-slate heroes, for one thing. Enemy formations are now capped at 3 enemies at once, with enemies that originally appeared in larger groups being buffed to compensate. Guest party members even actually chip in in battle now, every so often, with a couple actions each of them may perform at random after issuing commands to your party! There are other little changes, but I think it's a perfectly fine version of the game, having played and enjoyed both it and the NES original.
    Interestingly, the NES version actually DOES specify which members of the party are speaking each line of dialogue from the heroes, so that seems to be something the Pixel Remaster deliberately REMOVED for some reason. Maybe it's to let you imagine for yourself who's saying what? I'd be interested to hear the reasoning there.

    I do like two more than one. I like that there's more of a story. The game burned you, rightfully so, but the post-game content in the gba version makes it. You play as every character who died, fighting their way through hell to help the living members defeat the empereror. It's a real treat.

    The funny thing is, if I told you how the FF2 mechanics ACTUALLY worked, you would not have built the characters the way you did hahah. There's actually a mechanic in the game where spells are massively depowered if you equip weapons, shields, and most gloves, armor, etc.
    Basically, the "right" way to build the characters is to have Firion focus only on swords and shields and nothing else, have Maria focus on Black Magic and basically de-equip all of her gear and play with her naked - no weapons or anything. Guy should focus on white magic, and again he should be naked. For Maria and Guy, the only items they can equip without penalties are Ribbon, White/Black Robes and Protect Ring (and a few others that don't matter). When Leon joins, he should also just focus on Swords and Shields.
    That is the "right" way to build your characters. You will notice if you built like this, instead of doing 300 damage with spells, you will do 2500 or 3000 (and when built like this, those "tedious" dungeons you mentioned are no longer tedious haha). Maria can cast Flare and Guy can cast Holy. Firion can equip Masamune and Leon can use Excalibur. All other weapon types are hilariously not worth using. Don't shoot the messenger.

      Is all of this still true in these new remastered versions? Someone above wrote about most of the stat based things were taken for the handheld ports already, so maybe it is. But the way you write it makes it sound like you might've picked it up as some kind of urban legend, that was true, but maybe isn't anymore in the later versions / ports of the game and now the remasters anymore?

    • @Katie-hb8iq
      @Katie-hb8iq Před 2 lety

      @@bazzy5644 I just beat the game last week. Yes, all of this is true as the Pixel Remaster is not based on the PSP version - it is brand new based off the NES version. Any similar quality of life improvements with the PSP or GBA versions were implemented again from scratch.
      I unfortunately played Maria with bows and had her equipped with armor. I found this out after Mysidia, which was WAY too late. When I tested it though, I would put on and take off one armor at a time and go into the same battle and check damage. The highest damage was when she had nothing on. Ribbon, Black Robe and Protect Ring did not affect damage. Actually, Black Robe improved damage - the only armor to do so due to +10 Int.
      In my testing, Flare would do about 150 damage. If I had her naked but with a bow, she did 950. With the bow not equipped, she would do about 1150.
      I actually grinded her magic up to the point where it would have probably been if I had focused it on it correctly from the beginning rather than using bow attacks a lot, and she was doing 2000+ damage, which is around the same damage as Masamune/Excalibur at weapon level 10.
      Also, Mysidia would ahve been a lot easier for me if I had built her correctly because by equipping armor and using bows, my Fire spell was only doing around 350 damage to the Dark Flans, and each flan has 300 HP. This made those fights with multiple Black Flans very tedious because I could only kill 1 at a time. However, by correcting the issue, it was actually possible to kill all the flans at once with Fire, which is how the game designers intended for you to beat it I think.
      Anyway, what I'm saying is correct and I think it's the dumbest game mechanics ever.

    I've always had a soft spot for the first 3 Final Fantasy games. I dunno what it is, but something about their simplicity is charming. Although II had its own ambitious story, the whole trilogy really feels like Square was testing the waters with the kind of RPG Fantasy world they wanted to create. In a way, it makes me appreciate IV and onward because of everything that came before. IV expanded the storytelling first established in II, V revamped the Job System of III, and in a way, the first game kinda just planted the seeds that would eventually bloom into beauty.
    Also, if anything has to be said, Nasir Gebelli deserves MASSIVE respect for his programming skills on these games. Considering the sheer feat of doing so at the time, while doing it entirely on his own, you cannot ignore his contributions to this series.

    23:50 and when I got to this part, I had every party member equipped with ribbon, which nullifies all negative status effects, making the last dungeon essentially an EXP boost. I got so many stats upgrades running around the dungeon that I 2-cycled the final boss. My _bow_ character was hitting for 3000 damage from the back row - essentially a free grind session as I ran around. Just a note for anyone picking up FF, Ribbon is in many of the games (including the first) and although it isn't the _best_ equipment in slot stat wise, it's ability to nullify all status effects makes it the best armor in the game for any character.

    Loved hearing what you have to say about the initial trilogy. I feel that the main line series didn’t really find its identity until 3, but after that, each game released was more grand than the last. And once it finally found itself, that’s when it really started playing with its story telling.

    Just a note to Ultima in FFII.
    The spell is linked to the character's skill levels and spell levels. In order to max the spell's power you would need to grind all skills to max and learn all spell slots (minus one) to max level. Then you would max level Ultima. It is a pain in the ass but by the time you get done grinding it is the most powerful spell in the game. Only grind heavy madmen will want to stick it out to see the potential of Ultima.

    Interesting considering how they picked the rebalanced stats from the Dawn of Souls release for FF1 and FF2 (which make the game way easier than the original). Maybe they decided to introduce little curve balls like these to still keep the games challenging? Who knows...

    I played ff2 on the GBA remaster, and i didn't have to grind either, I've heard but can't confirm that it was an NES thing, but basically it comes from people realizing that hitting you allies gets you hp so they spend a long time hitting their own allies to get hp and weapons skills up, but I'm also told that doing that actually made the game harder? (I don't know ff2 nes mechanics well enough but I remember someone telling me this) so since the game got harder people assumed they needed to grind more, which just screwed them over more Because they assumed just because you CAN spend hours attacking your own teammates, that it was the most effective tactic available.

    • @MLmaster135

      leveling your hp in FF2 made the game harder specifically because of the emperor, due to how he quite literally has the same drain effect as the blood sword(blood lance/trident) on his physical attack. this effect the emperor has also explains why the blood sword is broken when used against him and is literally his weakness(besides massive hp which is what the drain effects scale off of)
      alongside other enemies with drain attacks like vampire girls/other undead enemies with drain attacks for example, so the reason why leveling hp up made the game harder was specifically due to drain attacks.
