- War Thunder: Rookie Mistakes
Today we take a look at three fights taken from just two battles showing common mistakes made by pilots flying all nations at all BR's.
The goal is to demonstrate where the mistakes took place, how they could have been prevented and finally how pilots who find themselves in such situations can get out of them.
Note: Not all engagements are the same, these are common examples but there are always difference, the idea here is to make viewers think about there own engagements, where they could improve and if they should have begun to begin with.
Also don't rag on these pilots, common mistakes are common and at some point you have made these mistakes as well, I know I have.
Anyways, I hope you enjoy!

Rookie mistake #1, play WT and think that you're going to have a good time reaching tier VI vehicles.
meanwhile getting seal clubbed whenever you go.
Unfound it’s very very very hard😂
And you fucking don't.
For the most part I had fun. Only exceptions are the AUBL Spam and the Wheraboos complaining that their tiger can’t do shit, when really they just don’t know how to play it.
@@TheCarDemotic and why would wehraboos ruin the experience for you? easy food.
"Remember where the ground is because, in the end, it is the ultimate enemy." :)
The way I've been saying it was
"Terrain is OP. Do not engage." :D
Liquid Leopard the only thing to fear, is trees themselves. You have to beg them and hope your wing clips through them instead of destroying it

This is a public service announcement: This is not Starfox. Holding your Q or E key will not stop bullets...
Unless your in an I-16 where it turns you into a flying weaponized fidget spinner, but that is the exception...
SirMan McDude
Weaponized Fidget Spinner.... I like that description.
🔃🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
I-16 has been my favorite fighter line, so much better than the more "Modern" looking fighters.
True,1-16 is small and fragile but its firepower and maneuveurability is crazy
@@hozhuofeng9877 those things can put up a fight to my a7m2
guess I'll just be a rookie until I memorize the flight characteristics of every military plane from the world wars.
lol same
imagine needing to have knowledge of a game to be good at it xd
@@mrplop38 don’t you have to have knowledge of every game to be good at it?
@@angeevids5294 that's what I am saying to be good at a game it requires that you know a bit about it lol
Yeah imagine
😣😫😭WHY ME 😣😫😭
Videos like this make me wonder if the reason I'm sick of WT is because I just play badly
its because you dont pay. the same shots never hit for you and will never hit for you no matter what while your pilots will always get onehitted. this is a rigged bullshitgame
9Finity or just you dont have the brain to understand. Loser
sure noob, you think if you dont understand something than it doesnt exist :D lol. go watch this to shred some light in your stupid fuck brain czcams.com/video/oC19cGJa-xw/video.html its not the premium vehicles are the p2w, the mechanisms are hidden in the programming, its the matchmaking the aiming the damage the spotting and everything else is rigged to aid the paying fucks and push down the freeloaders... go get yourself an icecream loser
"a burst also matters", no, it doesnt, its just press mouse button game checks what you look at, it calculated where will it hit and thats it, there is no skill, no aiming, no random its just your mouse and the games calculations. and i just picked one from your post because your IQ is clearly not enough to go more complex so we have to go step by step
being beaten :D by who? you? i see you are just a superiority complex kiddo :D you didnt beat anybody... and again, your burst is calculated by the game, you can only show it a general direction with your mouse, all other "aiming" is done by the game. is it nice warm keeping your head in your arse? :D
That intro is too relatable :(
Augustine Yap . If you’re not emptying three reloads into a biplane, you’re trying too hard. Or is that just me?
...or not trying hard enough?
@youtube primer that's a very interesting description
Agreed lol
Haha no for me it seems like everyone has aimbot I can’t even last a minute
Is it just me or do we always have those times for a couple weeks where our aim is garbage and then it gets better again only to get worse again.
G Spyder Omg me.
I know I'm not very good at the game, but I like to think that the lag from my potato computer is part of the problem.
@@stormhawk4277 Even just a bit of lag can indeed ruin your game pretty quickly.
I have a couple weeks where my aim is alright, then it goes back to being garbage.
Happens in other games too.
Top 10 rookie mistakes:
1: Thinking you can win air RB as the Germans
2: Thinking you can win air RB as the Americans
3: Thinking you won't get uptiered at 3.7
5: Thinking you won't get uptiered at 5.7
6: Thinking you won't get uptiered at 6.7
7: Thinking you won't get uptiered at 8.0
8: Thinking you can win a dogfight against a Spitfire
9: Thinking you can win *anything* against Russians
10: Trying to turnfight in anything other than an I-15
Ahem about the no.10 my m8 Even the Ki 27?
Too bad that all changed and now u cant win shit against axis
Sumting Wong Nice crafted bullshit
11: Thinking you can win *anything* as Russians
Being super-new (2 days) myself, I would add "thinking that you can play well with a mouse".
As a rookie who is still getting to grips with RB, I've found all of these videos you put up really helpful! Keep em coming o7
I found that watching how others play is a good way to learn, especially when they explain what they are doing and why.

So is it acceptable to noob wobble at treetop level when ur in a crippled American bf109 f4 being chased by other bf 109s that just came out of a dive ?
If you have no other options available to you then sure, just be aware that it will slow you down meaning that those 109's are going to catch you even faster and as you will be slower you are going to have even less energy to work with when they arrive.
low tier attackers have always been to go for me, aircraft like the A20G can generate a lot of lions while being quite fun to fly at there BR. Otherwise low to mid tier fighters, once you start playing rank 4 and above things get expensive but the overall lions earnings vs in game performance doesn't change much.
On the lions note turn off auto repair if you can keep auto reload on but repair OFF!!
play the a6m5 you can made 50k with out prenium
tbh be it my luck but the noob wobble seems to act as psychological warfare, if you know how to sustain it, the enemy can seem to just get so pissed off they just fire as much as possible. Even good pilots get annoyed. It's a cheapo strat, but in my luck it has worked.
So I was the p51 in the last match. I stumbled across this channel about a month ago and just realized I got a personal lesson on what not to do. Learning a lot from your videos. Thanks MagzTV.
Could you do a step-by-step tutorial on setting up for a boom and zoom? And on recovering from a bad first pass?
In American planes in particular, when I boom on a plane it feels like I'm either going too slow (and they shoot me down on the zoom) or I'm going too fast (and my controls stiffen and I can't get guns on). And since I usually dive to clear someone's six, there's always this urgent siren's call to just turn one more time and save the teammate.
As a noob, I think there's a (potentially long) period where you know broadly what you're supposed to do but don't have the details in a playbook or your muscle memory.
I have the same problems with stiffening in my D13
I find it extremely useful to know when you are going to have a bad pass, while Boom and Zoom is not all about diving, knowing when to disengage when you're having a bad pass can save at least a usable amount of altitude and potential energy.
But this is only done by words, you have to develop something from this theory that I don't know if you're going to find it useful
Ideal B&Z dive speed for props are between 550-650 KPH. If you're going against fighters, avoid diving from directly above. Ideally you want to dive from just behind them.
If you miss the pass, start a good climb at at least 25°, preferably higher. Gain speed and altitude if the situation calls for it, and do it again.
This is how I do it.
I always love it when the enemy (often playing USA) goes "Japanese are OP" "Japanese tank multi-gun bullshit" "Japanese planes are too powerful"
*Japanese Team mind:*
"I never thought I would ever use the hull gun"
"Stupid American turnfighting a Zero"
"We'll just push them down from space to feed the Zeroes"
*looks up* "Oh shit! A spitfire! We're doomed!"
As a japanese player, one thing I am scared of is a spitfire diving from literally outer space.
@@mosesracal6758 As a British player I feel the same about 109s
as a Zero player (mainly) I ABSOLUTELY love it when Spitfires come by to say hi! They always turnfight 9 times out of 10. But yeah, I do put them in high priority in a multi-threat environment.
SwampNuts as a German player I love to dive on you’re “bombers”
@@azairencerobinson7600 I think my most commonly used phrase is "fucking 109s", after I get shot down.
Special thanks to Griviues for the intro :P
MagzTV I did not know Japan’s planes where good in vertical turn I told a spit to not do that because when I was dogfighting him he was doing good every time he did that
how much does this game cost?
It's free to play, no cash required ever. You CAN spend real money to speed up progression and buy special "premium" planes that are only available with real money. An example is the A7 Magz is flying for this video.
Its free as long as you don't want to spend money on premium aircraft
this is why me, as a PS4 player, is crap at air AB and RB, because we can't look back at an aircraft and control our own at the same time (with out crashing that is) so you have to guess what they are going to do, or be a sitting duck while you try and find them with the touchy controls and then try and react, but your almost always dead by that point
That intro was HILARIOUS. However, I should note that in Grivious' defense, Gaijin DID nerf the Ho-103 (the MGs his aircraft was armed with) HARD in the last major update. The API rounds in most of the belts became regular AP and the API-T rounds became just tracers. Note that this nerf is unhistorical and goes completely against MULTIPLE sources provided to Gaijin from both Japanese and American documents.
Now, I do have some observations that I'd like to make note of: while a suboptimal choice to engage two on one, it does look like the Spitfire may have done so primarily to protect the P-47. His mistake was COMMITTING to the engagement afterwards instead of breaking off once his wingman was in the clear.
did gaijiggles ever care about anything "unhistorical"? magical armour thats stronger than it is, HESH, APDS, Mk 103 on the Ho 229,..................
there is far too much to name, but its a fact they really care anymore
But I saw every single round there simply miss that P-47... He probably was losing his cool and his precision just flew out of the window while chasing that Thunderbolt
i can honestly never play War Thunder RB or AB ever again, and havent in 2 years, which bums me out, it used be so fun but now theres no teamwork, if youre dogfighting with another player next thing you know half of your team is right on your 6 trying to steal the kill, and sometimes even shooting you down in the process or to get you out of the way.... so now i just stick to the almost barren wasteland of War Thunder SB and the more fun IL2 BOS/BOM/BOK. but god i miss War Thunder RB and how it used to be.
Idk the general playerbase feels way better now than it felt in 2016, when I started, playing maybe a match a week until I got interested about a month ago
@@eVill420 I was dominating 3 guys who kept going after me when they respawned and my team noticed I was doing pretty good so then the start using me as bait and every time was close to shooting a plane down in that match my kill would get stolen
Finally some War Thunder air again :)
Yes! Thank you for returning to this style of videos. I really missed your "tutorial" videos and how you would explain the mechanics of the game, and just overall tactics and strategies for optimal engagements.
Good advertisement for the A7M1.
Reppu Stronk. Reppu v2 even stronker
The extent of my defensive flying skills is what you termed the "Noob Wobble" lmfao.
This is such a refreshing change to being shown how to destroy other aircraft. Being shown so clearly the mistakes I make so often has reinforced the lessons I have tried to learn from watching other WT experts. Seems to me that you've shown things from a new angle. Looking forward to more of this, Magz. Thanks.
Important video Magz, these always help the community. If I were to add to the discussion, I’d say flying by the books is a great place to start, relying on boom/zoom or strict energy fighting can give you alot of useful habits, but I would suggest letting yourself open up as you get more experienced. I was only able to fly more aggressively with success after about 1000 hours of fighter combat. If you’re new to warthunder or haven’t hit your comfort zone in the air yet, my 3 biggest suggestions are 1, bind 2 buttons for up and down elevator that you can utilize while looking behind you (makes defensive flying so much easier) 2, warm your self up to taking really hard deflection angle shots, the more you can shoot from an angle above or below the enemy in a 3d space as opposed to having to get RIGHT behind them, the better. 3, get used to abusing your flaps in almost any fighter, they are extremely powerful as long as you remember to flair/pump them when you get near the rip speed for them.
out of all the tutorials this is absolutely the best one by far. Most Tuts will just play the game and talk about very basic aiming stuff. 4 minutes into this video and Ive already learned a lot from just a single engagement. Your freeze frames and explanations are extraordinary. Lots of tuts go so far off topic and never actually go over stuff they are showing.
Mags you make some of my favorite war thunder content. Not only do you talk about the aircraft itself, but strategies to deal with it, keep up the good work. Cheers
Awesome breakdown of those engagement Magz, thank you for taking the time to explain everything is such detail.
this video has honestly been more helpful than a lot of "tips/trick" videos I've seen online. actual footage of actual gameplay with useful and easy-to-understand commentary. I've subscribed I'm definitely going to be taking a look through more of your content as I'm still new to war thunder and want to improve.
An excellent video! I'd love to hear more advice for rookie pilots, I'm trying to get into Realistic battles myself but errors like this make it rather hard to perform well
The dislikes are the aircraft you shot down XD
They better would learn from him!
Very helpful, a whole series of these would be very well received.
I'm loving these videos Magz, I know this is an older video but I'm still learning a lot from these. Trying desperately to get on your level!
I really appreciated this kind of videos, looking forward to see more of this type.
fantastic video - incredibly helpful - thanks for posting :)
Been playing war thunder for a while and these are my favorite videos of yours. Wish you had more they helped me a lot back in the day.
wow, that's way to complicated knowing all that and every aircraft.. Guess i'm dead
Chazz Summer Don’t get discouraged, friend! It’s just a habit you build over time. When you’ve flown a lot of different aircraft, you get an idea of what flight characteristics each one has.
These are the videos that I subscribed for!
Thanks. This was intresting, entertaining & educational.
Last year I was pretty critical of your wt content, but this is the Magz i remember from 2015
Could you give us a highlight reel of your aerial exploits against your toughest opponents, would absolutely love to see that!! Thks and keep up the great work...
A very useful video. Highlighted my own errors. Especially the follow the vertical thing.
11:30 ish He might not have been able to outrun you, as he had a damaged engine. He was leaking oil, he there is a high chance that he simply believed in the long run he would be caught and destroyed, so he tried to dodge instead.
Basically, it's best to know when to disengage and run away from a fight.
If you know yourself and you know your enemy, you may not fear the results of 100 battles. - SunTsu
I watched for less than a minute and laughed already(also new sub)
Im new myself, and watching this and correcting my mistakes SAVED me from my planes getting shot down.
I have just started War Thunder and finding the learning curve very steep (and enjoyable!) I've decided to stick with the Hurricane fighter until I learn it well, before adding new planes into the mix. I know I have learnt several good points from this video and will think back on it many times. Thanks Magz! Clear skies to you.
That intro had me laughing for ages, I know his pian all too well.
Magz, I regularly link people to your Energy FIghting video; I'll be doing the same in the future for this one. Great demonstration!
I can relate to these hints so little ... i'm already dead when they engage me the first time around so i rarely have to consider any maneuvering and dogfighting after that :D
Thanks a lot, totally helped! I kept getting shot down when I flew P-38, and this is JUST the video I needed to improve!
Love the new intro and new logo. hope all is well with you and family. Thanks for being you.
Thanks for this video. I been playing 2 years and watching this showed me how far I've come. Especially that noob wobble. But I've learned alot about energy by playing realistic only and hundreds of hours of dog fighting. I'm just now getting into the jets as I've only done the USA tree. I'm just starting 🇫🇷.
Good vid.
As I am new to War Thunder (only started in mid December 2017) I'd like to see some more tutorial type vids, that'd be cool.
Nice video especilay for new pilots. And yes intro is hilarious :-))))))
I like this video format, hope to see more and maybe try this for tanks as well?
more of these vids magz.. gg mate
MagzTV you do an incredible job with these clips. I play mainly GF, but thanks to your tips I can put more or less a fight on AF. Or at least I do know now why someone turn me into cheese while it happens.
The intro to this video was very pleasing
I'm getting better just watching this guy
Great vid as always Magz. More War Thunder please. :-)
I typically go in for ground targets with the Hellcat MkII. Is it good to strafe them at low altitude constantly?
It's amazing how much better you play when you look into how these vehicles were used, whats their strengths and weaknesses and knowing the other vehicles strengths and weaknesses. I love studying journals of actual pilots of the vehicles and training materials. The advantage the actual pilots had with the real aircrafts would be immense due they had a lot of time to get to know their craft and the training they received with them along with the schooling on enemy planes.
Thx this was helpful
Fuckin got me grounded. I had my speakers really loud by accident and the beginning just played "FUCKS SAKE!"
Comunity needs videos like this one. Nice job, keep on.
Quick question how should I treat us naval planes I mean I'm at rank 3 but I just don't get a good grip on them.
I mainly fly the f4u series and the f6f-5n and I understand the bnz thing but IMO that's not the only thing they can do.
I also plane on gunning for the banshee ( yes I'm insane).
this is why me, as a PS4 player, is crap at air AB and RB, because we can't look back at an aircraft and control our own at the same time (with out crashing that is) so you have to guess what they are going to do, or be a sitting duck while you try and find them with the touchy controls and then try and react, but your almost always dead by that point
Jack Deveney so true, console controls are way more limited than pc, it’s still fun to skrew around and get frags with your friends, even if you can’t do many fancy maneuvers
That's not quite true, we have the target tracking view, so as long as you're locked on to the player you're dogfighting, you can keep your camera on them while maintaining full control of the plane.
Get keyboard and mouse ffs
No thanks.
k
Thank you so much for this! I just played two games and did so much better, because I was noticing these things and making sure not to do them. :)
I seldom play aircraft in War Thunder for I have hard time do strategy in 3D, but also for I only have mouse and keyboard, if I shall get a game (PC) controller what shall I get if I want to fly more in War Thunder but not want to be 100 % bound to aircraft?
Great video by the way, I guess that's mistakes I will do and I hope I remember some from this video when I start to fly more.
have you though of taking out some of the Italian aircraft.and i know your cutting down on the vids (Quality over quantity is best ) i was more just wandering then asking.
i thought this was a rookie video... i didnt understand half the words in this video xD
American team in tier 4 are getting better, I don't usually see people turning with zeros anymore lol
kevin Guo yh they really have improved I was playing Hokkaido 5.0 and every one was high and we never have altitude .ripped the Brits apart
Now they don't climb at all
Kyushu J7W1, please!
steve polychronopolis ive been asking for eons, good luck.
yes yeees, the shinden! the sexy 4x 30 mm!
Intro is the best thing ever
Talk in bout 4.3's and 4.7's meanwhile I'm chilling with my highest plane being a 1.7 lol. (Just started war thunder like a week ago, not even. And since i work I havent been playing a lot in that week just trying to learn stuff about the game
Jesse Snyder btw never commit to tailing spitfires or any aircraft for that matter in the bf 109 it’s a boom and zoom not maneuverable in its later or early versions the first e might be the best grinder in my opinion
@@azairencerobinson7600 i thought the fw 190's were the boom and zoomers? i'm only up to 2.3 German planes so i don't really know.
Jimmy_Stath1 they both are it’s just that honestly the 190 gets out preformed in dogfights the later versions of the 190 are interceptors and such so there good for climbing but not dogfighting I’m guessing I haven’t got them but the 109s like the trop is not to good for turn fighting with low speeds but climbs like a god
Just treat the Fw 190-s as they were American. Huge guns, huge speed, no turn.
Treat the Bf 109 as something in between an American and a Spitfire. Moderate turn, moderate speed, good guns.
Spitfire are moderate speed, good turn, low guns.
Oh and early Tier 5 Germans (Me 262, He 162) are utter shit because the 30mm-s are so slow, you need to be inbetween 200-400 meters, but everyone's faster than you.
More vids like this, where you mess with Griviues and pause to explain everything. Good video good sir
Could you do more of these kind of tactical analysis vids?
how do you move the camera while you are manuvering?
Wich type of ammo do u use for this aircraft?
whow men you just yelled in my earphone in the first 3 or 5 secound on the start of the vid hahah
Guy: goes after this guy
him: that was his first mistake
I was unprepared for that much SALT that fast
Heres a moment i remember from one of my games
I was in the P-40F fighting a Ki 61 at high altitude and i only boom n zoomed him and he got away despite hempering him with alot of stealth 50 cals
i love my p-38k, i find almost nothing can touch it while climbing, or at high energy, i can dive on my target, attack and quickly break away..its nice being able to control engagements, sadly nobody knows how to really fight them too well, another thing...that p-51 pilot just...failed horribly...i take my p-51 and engage all kinds of things but i use its high speed ability to my advantage..also the p-51d is seriously nerfed in warthunder..
Thing is most pilots think it's just a game, but if u do a little research, just maybe u could last an extra minute
This is helpful.🙂👍
Pretty much always comes down to knowing you and your enemies plane use your planes strengths against your enemies weaknesses
The intro earned you a sub😂
Things I hate about air battles:
1: if someone gets behind me I am fu/ked
Wait, how do you pull up when you are looking at something? What keys do you use to pull up and maneuver?
I mean when I play war thunder it’s not like I memorize which plane is good for vertical dogfights and which ones have better horsepower I just play
not even a minute in and had to like lol
My boy Turnbot representing AGN in the beginning
Ha! Ha! Welcome back to the inimitable world of the entertaining WT community, Mr M!! Good vid, by the way.
the salt in the start
i started this at full volume
holyyy
Best tutorial walk through. Instasub
I do the noob wobble, but try to keep it as random as possible, and even move towards the tracers knowing the pilot behind me will be adjusting his fire causing him to miss again. I usually die in situations like that, but it does keep me alive like 5x longer than if I wasn't wobbling. I WILL try to wobble less, though.
Before this video there was a commercial about knocking on stuff and one was a fridge, and I was like who fucking knocks on a fridge?
I believe I have made a number of these mistakes, albeit not consistently. Generally, I do try to BnZ properly, keeping an airspeed advantage, opening up distance, etc. However, I tend to have a lot of trouble setting-up good kills, and I've realized I really don't understand how to in a BnZ fighter. Most of my engagements follow a pattern of Approach->Pass->Miss->Disengage, which is not only frustrating, but I also don't really understand what I should be looking for to help turn those misses into kills. Even some of my "best" performances tend to result in me ending the game with no kills, either left behind by my team or outnumbered heavily by the enemy.
As a American Main the 3rd engagement really gave me some tips of what not to do
