IL2 - Head Tracking vs VR | A Discussion/Rant About Optimisation

  • I've played IL2 for nearly 18 months now, and yet I have only uploaded three videos on it so far, this is why.
Normally I like to focus my content on VR gameplay in combat sims like War Thunder, Elite Dangerous, IL2 etc. But with IL2 it has felt like an impossible task. It is nigh on impossible to get the game running smoothly in VR whilst recording at the same time, it just doesn't work.
I play IL2 a lot when not recording, and I can manage a decent performance in VR, but it is nothing compared to the performance I get with head tracking. Its to be expected, the game is running on relatively old software; and if all you are interested in is the immersion then IL2 in VR will be a lot of fun for you. But if you are like me, and you like to be competitive in dogfights etc, then the VR performance is unacceptable - and for now I shall only be using a headtracker when making future IL2 content, which is a shame.
Some people have been able to get pretty good performance with VR in IL2, and I've followed all the forum advice to no avail - from the comments on the forums it seems very hit and miss, and I'm not the only one dissapointed.

although this vid is a year old ive been looking at getting into flight sims, especially IL2 and was weighing up getting a VR headset, Joystick etc and the cost was just too excessive. Then i found vids about TrackIR and this seems like a real cheaper and easier option that is extremely effective. Thanks for this vid, coming from someone who uses both it was good to weigh up the pros and cons

Ive played these games since 2005. I don’t have VR, but spotting is one of the many reasons I play War Thunder air sim by preference abs haven’t touched Il-2 BoX in months. I’ve played Aces High, Rise of Flight, DCS, and BoX. RoF was a revelation when I first played it,BoS was my favorite thing ever, but they “improved” BoX/Flying Circus until they now are bleh. I tried WT sim with very low expectations after being into tanks for several years and was shocked at how much it put the fun back in flight sims for me. Sometimes I even fly around just looking at the scenery and doing aerobatics. I love it, and I’m glad to know it works well if someday I try VR.

I use the track IR w/the hat clip. I refuse to pay 150.00$ for a $5 dollar piece of plastic which is oxidized and will break easily. There was a review by a member of DCS who bought one of those 150.00 clips for his whole group of 20 pilots. All 20 broke. Nope, stick with the hat clip. Watching your video reminded me of why I finally went out, spent thousands of dollars, and bought a new gaming desk top. Almost every IL2 update I am writing support and bitching about some new glitch. LOL

I have a G2 and also Track IR and I still prefer VR. With a bit of twiddling you can get pretty good graphics and I get 60fps and some headroom left. Regarding a shortage of buttons ...I have 2 reserved on my left hand throttle for L ctl and L shift using Joytokey to assign them, and then one button on the joystick assigned to R ctl. So in theory if you have 20 buttons to hand you can have L ctl plus those button, Lshift plus those buttons and the L ctl + L shift plus those buttons .... bear with me, that now gives you 80 buttons. Add in the R ctl key on the joystick which doubles up the number of buttons on the joystick again. When I do videos I record using the ingame replay as it allows you to also change camera and rewind (unlike WT!). Gives a pretty good representation of what it looked like from my viewpoint and you can then also whack up all the graphics when you record it to video using shadow play or whatever. Another little tip i have to help find the right button in VR is to stick a little bit of Velcro (hook part) on every other button if they are in rows like the t16000 or saitek quadrant etc. You can then feel the keys better and know which ones are rough ones. I also put little strips on the housing beside the levers on the throttle quadrant to mark specific positions I need to move them to quickly...throttle rpm, stabiliser on bf109 are just a couple for example.

5:47 "Unlike head tracking, VR offers no (head) movement acceleration"
You may this by now, but just FYI, there is a tool VRNeckSafer made by J2_NobiWan that does just that. It offers either acceleration or the possibility to add x degrees to your head position at the push of a button. Look for "Simple tool to check your six" on the IL2 forums. All online IL2 servers accept players using the tool.
The tool is a god sent and levels out the playing field on the ease of being able to check your surroundings compared to TrackIR. Many, if not virually (heh) all VR players use it, so people adapt to it feeling just fine. I also have no problems using it, it gets second nature pretty quick and it improves the game play immensely.

  • @GroggyGreg
    @GroggyGreg Před 3 lety +11

Oof... gotta say i heavily disagree on this!
I love il2 in vr, sure there is some disadvantages but the immersion of vr is incredible. But i guess people have different priorities. 😄
Some of your points I don’t really see myself as a big problem.
The biggest advantage of vr by far is in dogfighting, aiming and keeping track of your opponent comes natural... and maneuvering the plane also.
To me vr has definitively improved my kill rate.
Checking your six in vr is easy enough if you are on a swivel chair.
Spotting planes to me is not the problem but identifying is harder.
Ive been a casual il2 player since forgotten battles and vr is by far what has helped me the most in shooting down other planes, my first multiplayer flight in vr i got three kills and made it back safe and i had been away from il2 for a good while, prior using track ir, i found aiming much more difficult and i would loose track of the opponent all the time.
On a 1080ti and 7700k i get around 70-90 fps in multiplayer with 80 players on, offline play i get a smooth 90.
If you are short on trim pots and buttons here is a good tip. An Arduino Leonardo will let you hook up 5 potentiometers and some buttons, there are also some very cheap cards ready with usb for buttons only, all you need to do is wire the buttons to the card and windows will recognize it as a joystick, Arduino needs some programming but is easy enough.

I use both a head tracker and an HP Reverb G2. I much prefer VR even though my head tracker works great. I purchased one of those homebrew kits off ebay that uses a playstation 3 camera and a 3d printed clip for $39. I play using a VKB Gladiator joystick and a Thrustmaster TWS Hotas. I also use voice attack for many keyboard commands. I use the "flashlight" command in VR to see my keyboard real quick when I need the keyboard, mostly to type something. I have everything else taken care of with keybindings and voice commands. In Elite Dangerous, my VR problem is I tend to use other software while playing the game that I need to see such as ED Discovery, Road To Riches, etc. Doing that can be a problem. I agree though that every time there is an update, it seems like I am back to square one optimizing the VR experience in IL-2. I would prefer better performance. I can rarely get 90 FPS. Hopefully when the 4080's or 4090's come out, this may fix this problem. Admittedly, I do not play IL-2 too much these days. Got tired of the poor frame rates in IL-2 while in VR and after playing in VR, I really don't want to play on a flat screen. Too busy playing other VR games that work well in VR.

I have a 2070 Super and a Ryzen 3600 but I have pretty reasonable framerates with my Odyssey Plus. FPS VR does show occasional regular dropped frames, but its definitely in the playable threshold and Im one of those people cant handle dropped frames well in VR. I wonder if this is an Oculus issue.
My main problem is just the impossibility of spotting, and that's what lead me to your video. Even with the VR zoom toggle... it's just incredibly hard to spot, and even harder to identify other aircraft. Zoom appears to make aircraft disappear more often than not... I am wondering if a Reverb G2 would change that, but I dont think my 2070 Super is up to the task of driving that at the resolutions it would need to make a difference.

Bought a Reverb G2 a few days ago, tried it in IL2 MP and immediately went back to TiR. Immersion is great and whatever, but for me, the severe drop in graphic fidelity, the washed out image, the tunnel-vision FOV and decreased spotting / id’ing wasn’t a good tradeoff. I do admit that gunnery is easier in VR tho.
VR is great for single player games such as Elite, but is not up to snuff for MP.

    Very Interessting. My two Cents.
I Prefer VR... even with its disadvantage. And ya its extreme sometimes when it comes to physical stress on the neck :D checking 6 is okay but god forbid youre in an tight dogfight withsome one, have fun to turn your face 100° up than quickly to one side then to the other and if youre right handed its quite hard to look at your 6 over the right should, so you better switch hands on the stick quickly.
BUT Il2 and War Thunder are the ONLY Flight Sims i got to run at constant (mostly) 80 FPS (100% FPS for my headset) so i really love to play expecialy those two with max performance and it looks quite okay especialy Il2 looks pretty good BUt has horrible bad Anti Aliasing i which they would add TAA. War Thunder has nice TAA or even SAA but the textures of that game is abit weak and also some cockpits barely work (ammo counter MC 202 example).
DCS: ohhhh man... solo missions okay still 40 FPS but okay. Multiplayer... depends but man i once joined with a Buddy an 60 Player Match and my Framerate was really at like 12.5 FPS or so, so everything was warping around and i actually played like that for a while in the air it got at best 30FPS. Can relate to motion sickness trough performance :D
I only streamed to my friend trough discord or recorded with nvidia shadowplay, that didnt harm my performance actually.
I have both "Track IR"(its not the real one but works the same but you need to set it up with opentrack) and VR and i really prefer VR in most cases... to be honest for me Immersion goes over competitivness but i actually am better with VR and i played il2 for a while not finding the VR Zoom Button so when i wanted to check an enemy planes markings (IFF) i had to go as close as 300 Meters :D
Also i had Track IR longer than VR but i used VR first... ya i just couldnt set it up for that long was to lazy for that and annoyed.
I think Il2 is quite good optimized for VR compared to most other games, MSFS2020 i even have to reduce the rendering scale to 70% to get 40FPs i just whish Il2 had TAA

Just came across your channel today. Nice videos!
I’ve been using Tobii 5 and VoiceAttack in IL2 for the last couple of months and it’s an excellent combination for me (I only got into flight sims at the beginning of this year). Being able to just glance at something without head movement is pretty impressive, and works flawlessly even when wearing glasses. And VA was crucial for me because I only had a joystick at the time so buttons were limited (I really dislike using the keyboard).
One shortfall is that IL2 only works with an earlier version of the Tobii software at this point so you can’t get a full 6 degrees of actual head movement, but I compensate for this with a hat switch.
Another excellent feature is the ability to have separate settings for different games, such as IL2and DCS just by clicking on the selected game at the beginning of a session.
It does require a lot of patience at the very beginning to really dial in the settings that work for you so patience is required, but worth it. Sorry, wasn’t planning on making this comment so long! 😵

Great video! I've have been playing IL2 with a headtracker on a 4k monitor and my buddy, who is usually my rear gunner, uses VR (HP Reverb 2). In most cases, he spots enemies before I do and at farther distances. Maybe that's because he isn't flying the plane and can enjoy the view, but he is still able to spot and hold a target very well. Maybe the better resolution compared to Rift S allows him to spot easier? As for headtracking, I find IL2 to be pretty bad actually. I can't even look straight up and then behind me. It usually gets stuck and sometimes glitches out and has me looking at my feet in the middle of a dogfight. I'm using opentrack, maybe I'm missing some important settings there. If anyone has suggestions I'd love to hear them. Thanks & sry for the long comment.

Make sure that when your turned head 8s just hitting the limits of the permitted in-game panning range, that your clip is not getting close to the camera's edge-of-field. You want a 'buffer here, so that when you inadvertently move your head too far, it doesn't immediately put the clip on or outside the camera's field edge. The smoothing feature does a great job when you even limit the active area on the camera's sensor to a fairly small central region. In short, don't think you have to use the fullest extent of the camera's FoV.
Filurthermore, increase the 'sensitivity', whereby a fairly small head movement still produces a good amount of virtual head movement. This will help to jot have your clip straying near the field edge of the camera, and keep from causing wierd things to happen when the clip is 'seen' by the camera as having a too large rotation. Finally, this will reduce fatigue of neck and eyes.
In my Il-2 1946 game, I've altered a classfile to increase my in-game panning in azimuth from the stock 155 degrees to 180. And in the vertical, the range has been boosted from -60 to 89, up to -75 to 135 (tipping my virtual head 45 degrees back beyond vertical.) This further provides a freedom of movement because I now essentially never bang into any hard limits to panning.
I might add that my monitor subjects an apparent angular width of about 90 degrees, which is not much less than my default FoV of 105 degrees. This provides a near 1:1 image scale. Together with my tuned TrackIR settings, whereby my eyes pretty much directly look straight at the point of interest as I pan my head (i.e., my eyes don't tend to swivel in their sockets to any meaningful degree), at 2560X1440 resolution, I enjoy what I call the poor man's VR. ;)
      Cheers!

I've invested in VR and while it works ok with 2x2080ti and 9900K the lack of antialiasing hurts the playability so hard in the end, in WT it feels like cheating (no Antialiasing means all planes at distance look like 4px jagged line which is impossible to miss even when low at ground.
In IL2 i tend to have another issue the more jagged the edges the more the plane disappears when it tilts right (when you can see really just the prop.) when i turn off AA in IL2 and ramp up render resolution to 300% i get some 60 FPS (with dynamic rendering (the thing that skips every second frame and tries to guess it instead) its the most playable i got it to visibility against the sky is more then 5km but i still feel like it would be impossible to play germans and spot stuff for BnZ, against the ground i get 1.5km visibility at best maybe 2 but i cant see anything further away unless i literally track it the whole time from when it was closer even then when low at ground i cant discern the horizon and a plane really.
Also thinking about TrackIR i had it before (version 4) but had to move and sold it so gonna probably buy a new one.
There i'd have a question, anyone with experience with Tobii Eyetracker? would it perhaps be better then TrackIR? I could buy both.... however.... i kinda know what trackir does already, just wondering if eyetracking is worth it or not. I can also welcome any kind of suggestions to the graphics settings for IL2 on Valve Index with 2080ti (in SLI but i guess that doesn't matter much).

I just like headtracking, I guess. I've been using it so long I'm used to it. Plus the higher resolutions and prettiness on a monitor is worth it to me. I still play WT in VR occasionally but I'm most comfortable with headtracking.
Plus being able to ID a plane from a distance is something I like being able to do, and it's easier with headtracking. VR has its advantages though for sure.... especially in tracking targets, and definitely with "dot spotting" since dots are sooooo huuuuuuuge.

You can also do head tracking completely for free using an Aruco marker and opentrack

I also went with TrackIR for War Thunder. For the same reasons. I needed to be able to use my keyboard.

I'm not sure that the argument "VR is worse because my PC can't handle it" is very sound. I've played in VR for 2 years always had a fine framerate on a 2060super with nice looking settings. The spotting issue is true and the reason I occasionally use my trackir instead. VR is more fun most the time still though.

VR is more immersive but one has to rely completely on the HOTAS since the keyboard cannot be seen.

TeaRex telling it like it unfortunately is, In multiplayer matches in IL2 I can pull a steady 45fps until I come into close quarters with the enemy, then it turns into a blurry jittery frame drop mess, anyone planning on using VR with IL2 I suggest single player mode or Campaign.
otherwise TrackIR all the way = no problems.

one thing you can use with VR is an app called "VR Neck saver", it lets you rotate your playspace by whatever degrees you want (i use 90) so you can look around alot easier, even fly backwards, without breaking your neck to do so...its all external from the game so no issues there.

The washed out image is terrible with the G2- thus is why Im sending mine back. I might trial the Apara 5k when it comes out in march with a better gpu....I play alot of msfs2020 and love the best image fidelity possible....and VR dosnt provide that at all currently unless I want to drop in excess of 4k which is ridiculous in my opinion.

It may not seem like it to you but IL2:Great Battles series was actually made for VR - it was one of the main selling points. That said, I'm also in the "disappointed" camp. I have a Quest 2 and I can't get it to run comfortably (frame-rates, resolution) - I've gone back to TIR. I'm hoping the continued optimisation of the game, the headset and an up-gunned PC will see me giving VR another go.

  • @Taurencowpew
    @Taurencowpew Před 2 lety

I have a very beefy PC, great VR (Pimax), and also TrackIR (in a drawer somewhere). Plus I have the advantage of being a touch-typing god. Not that it's needed, with a decent HOTAS. Seems to me that you've talked yourself into justifying a position. Streaming/Recording while playing VR is clearly not good for performance. Even so, I don't find IL-2 taxes my system that much, compared to a full DCS multiplayer server.
To me, the differences between the two playstyles are far deeper, even though they use the same engine. Flying flat screen is a poor experience; more akin to gaming than piloting. It is a clever representation of reality, but the compromises made to simplify the interface eliminate true attempts at actual simulation.
VR is still a compromise, but so much less. The immersion VR provides blurs the lines between simulation and actual reality much more effectively, and leads to far more believable sensations, sensitivity to feedback, etc.
