Ryan's training videos are I think the best. And you can see the children love to watch the take off training at the end of the runway.
This video is liquid gold! I've watched it four times now and learn something new every time. Who would have though that watching two experienced bush pilots flying in the mountains of PNG in changing weather conditions would make such rivetting viewing!

That spot as you're heading back to Goroka and that mountain appears out of teh clouds and it's top looks to be just below the upper edge of the cloud layer reminds me of a expression of one of the pilots we would fly with as kids. "I'll get up to where I can see things as some of these clouds have rocks in them"

Wow - what an amazing video! It is just jammed packed with information as you were putting Andrew through his paces and thanks to Andrew for taking part in the video as the two way conversation added so much to your tuition. Details like getting Andrew to line up with a straight nose wheel at the top of the airstrip at Sindeni was fascinating - eight feet off the centerline wasn't acceptable - seems nothing to us but on a slippery surface like that it can lead to directional control problems so it was great you got Andrew to try it again. All through the video you talked Andrew through every aspect of the flights, landings, and debriefs - just so much to take on board. Ryan, you're a highly competent "scud running pilot" - as you say, if you couldn't manage VFR as often as possible you wouldn't get much achieved. That said it was fascinating to see how quickly the clounds changed and you went from being quietly confident of getting through the clouds to "Maski" - let's get out of here. Your flying in the mountains of PNG is superb and looks very intimmidating but it's the product of years you've spent learning to understand the landscape, the weather and the navigation. It looks easy when you do it but it certainly is not. Great to see you passing on the skills to Andrew. Thanks for a wonderful video Ryan.

Ryan, hi from Alberta Canada been enjoying your channel during down time and weather delays all of us here love it. PNG beautiful amazing people. Your skillset as a pilot just amazing. What I like the best is you are actually flying the aircraft no flight comp or autopilot. Piloting from run up to shutdown and everything in between including unbelievable terrain, constant weather changes and you call them runways maintained with 4" bush knives ?.,the sloping ground which may or may not have cut grass and to top it off watching out for the occasional roaming animal or children playing on the runway. What an important service you provide for the PNG people.
Northern bush flying in Canada or Alaska we have at minimum two pilots, gravel runways, lighting, real time tower weather and even now some ILS approaches. Services, perimeter security fencing at most strips and we consider it challenging flying. Kudos to you cus yours is actual challenging flying.

Goroka seems to be about 330 km from Yambali where the recent landslide devastated the village and adjacent communities. Hagen appears to be about halfway between Goroka and the landslide site, but I don't recognise any of the place names further west than Hagen, so I don't know if you folks are close enough to play any role in the relief efforts. Anyhow, both the people affected by the disaster and you, Ryan, as well as your colleagues and family are in my thoughts and prayers. Love from Rick
There is only one airstrip (Kairik) anywhere near Yambali and given the terrain in the area helicopters are going to be key in the relief effort. I imagine the authorities will requesition Kairik for helicopter activity so there doesn't seem much fixed wing aircraft can contribute. I did find an area of what looks to be short reasonably smooth grass sloping uphill not far south of Yambali. In my simmulator I was able to land there in a Twin Otter so if it was possible in reality then fuel and supplies could be flown in and the R66s could opperate in the Yambali area with much shorter flights than from Kairik or further afield. It's not that simple though given the difficult security situation in the area - military protection woud be required. It seems this disaster is going to effect thousands of people in the area for a very long time.
No we haven't been a part of any relief for it. We are so busy with out own schedule and it about an hour flight from Goroka

Wow, that's heading downhill. Seems those downhill runways could lead to a damaging tail strike on rotate.
Believe it or not, it's actually landing that can cause a tail strike easier. Hitting a big bump on landing can throw your nose up fast

It's really annoying when someone talks over you when you are trying to teach/instruct/correct. It is a red flag when they are more concerned with saving face and afraid of appearing wrong or whatever instead of listening to what the mentor had to say and letting it soak in. A wise man will receive instruction.

Since this video is on the topic of training, I'd love to ask you some questions about the plane and its performance.
1) When you are landing full weight, do you have any problems with elevator pressure when full flaps are deployed? I no longer use full flaps on my landings when I am heavy due to the very very strong elevator pressure - the amount of forward push on the yoke needed to keep the nose from going up is just too much and makes the plane quite difficult to control. (the trim is also maxed out all the way up when I deploy full flaps).
2) All the Kodiak's in the Philippines have trouble with the air-conditioning system. Compressor failures, hose leaks, expansion valve failures, etc). How has the A/C been in your fleet? I noticed yours is OFF but I'm guessing its for the extra power on takeoff?
3) Do you follow the prescribed PSI on your mains? We had a small problem with main tires getting worn out a bit too fast on the inside wall of the tire. While the main tread of the tire would be at 80% life, the thinner side walls on the inside (near fuselage) would thin early and show ply. I had many theories on this - too many heavy landings causing the tire to flex? mudflap rubbing on tire when heavy taxiing? maybe increase psi to 5 above "normal" to change the characteristics of the tire? How often do you guys change tires?
4) What is your "FA DOOR %" when the A/C System is off? Can be accessed in the ECS service menu.
I have a bunch more but will save it for the next video :)
PS: Are pilots in your company required to have FAA and be from the USA? I am an American but I grew up in the Philippines and have been exploring the idea of flying elsewhere. Thank You
Yes we still use full flaps on landing. We just trim so we don't have so much forward pressure on yoke on landing. Our planes don't have A/C. They removed it for weight. Yes we run recommended tire pressure and yes, it wears the inside of the tire faster. We rotate them when the inside tread is 50% to even wear.
No, not required to have FAA license, but are required to have CPL and Instrument

After touch down on a soft feld I would keep the nose up, and not let it drop as shown, a soft spot or an unseen gopher hole will surely fold the nose wheel back.
Well here if you hold the nose up, you can hit a big enough bump and almost have a tail strike

That weather change is not training gone wrong. It is good training to handle the changeable conditions and rethink the plan on the fly.
