    My uncle, Max, flew 172s out of Wewak for years in the 60s, 70s and 80s. I've read his books and discussed his flying but never understood, the shear skill and bravery that he and others had until I watched your videos. Thanks for opening our eyes to whole new world of flying!

    From what I've seen, PNG is the "Hard Mode" of piloting. You have tropical convection, massive mountains and very unwise locals using the runways for all sorts of shenanigans. I wanna try!

      Thanks Ryan for sharing your daily adventures. I am not a pilot, but I definitely understand that this is a challenging job under this conditions that you face in this area of the world.
      It is for sure helpful that you grew up in PNG to know more about all conditions than the usual pilots.
      I absolutely love your videos and I hope you will continue to do this for quite a while.

    I was blessed with the opportunity to fly in a Kodiak about 14 years ago shortly after the Kodiak was released. My late wife was in the Hospital at the University of Tenness Medical Center, but she released me to go take a look at the new bird that had flown in to do demo flights at Knoxville Downtown ISLAND (KDKX if I remember). I wasn't going to fly due to lack of money, but when a military helicopter pilot heard my story, he paid for my flight! I wish I could remember our pilot's name, but I do think it was the same color scheme as your planes. Keep the blue side up!

    Great VFR video, Ryan. You demonstrate well the value of proficiency and familiarity of the area you are flying in. It takes time and patience to be good at it. TY for taking the time to share it with us all.

  • @stevekirk8546
    @stevekirk8546 Před 19 dny +5

    A masterclass in practical flying! Flying A to B using IFR certainly has it's uses but this VFR method is way more interesting. I hadn't realised you have to fly VFR in a single engined aircraft when carrying fare paying passengers in PNG - without your VFR skills a lot of them would have very long waits getting to or from their remote villages. Interesting that you "cut your teeth" in the Goroka - Haia - Wabo area and I think I see how it would have helped your development as a pilot. Even in simmulation it's a fascinating area to fly in - the terrain is varried but conducive to learning to read the ground and fly an appropriate course. Given the altitude of some of the mountains in the area it amazes me that it's possible to thread a route through them at seven thousand feet in VFR even with quite a lot of cloud around. The Asaro River is so often clear of cloud and gives a very handy back door into the Goroka Valley. The inclusion of the ATC comms gives a really good insight into the world you fly in. A lovely video Ryan - thank you.

    Another great flight. I've never had a chance to fly in a Cessna Grand Caravan, but it's one of my favorite aircraft. They just seem to be so solid and reasonably easy to fly. When you're flying in that part of the world, the last thing you want is surprises from your aircraft. Nice landing, not rushed, just flew the plane down until it touched.

I’m thinking of purchasing your flight training sw/video…. how much detail do you go into ref pre-flight checks & start up please?
