- Vocal Coach Reacts To Alanis Morissette | You Oughta Know | Live | Ken Tamplin
Alanis Morissette’s career took off pretty rapidly in the 90s and she wrote some pretty great songs. Known for her emotive driven lyrics, Rolling Stone once labeled her the “Queen of Alt-Rock Angst".
Alanis started playing the piano at age 6 and began performing soon after. Years later she made it onto the Canadian sketch comedy show “You Can’t Do That On Television” as a teenager.
Before her career really blew up, she put out two records with MCA Records Canada which ended up being moderately successful with her debut album being certified platinum.
After starting off with a more dance-pop sound, she transitioned to alternative rock and was signed by Maverick Records who released her third album Jagged Little Pill in 1995.
The album took off after Los Angeles radio station KROQ began giving her first single significant airplay. The album began to gain international notoriety and ended up staying in the top 20 of the Billboard 200 for over a year.
Alanis went on to sell more than 75 million albums worldwide and was nominated for 14 Grammys, 7 of which she ended up winning.
Today I’ll be reacting to a more recent performance of “You Oughta Know” on the Howard Stern Show. I’m looking forward to hearing what you all thought. Please be sure to share your feedback!

Amazing vocalist. Jagged Little Pill is a classic.
It is!
This album was her greatest hits like fleetwood macs romours. Dude reacting was harsh on her voice. She did this for Howard. Not like in 20+ years. Good for her. 👍🥰. The drummer for touring was Taylor Hawkins. He was awesome. RIP 👍🥰⚡️🪦
Her trills on "you" and "bear" are otherworldly. They're incredible
So much control & strength in her voice! Always a big fan of hers!❤️
😀👍
I love these unique voices like Alanis, Björk, Tori Amos, Aurora, Hannah Reid etc
Evening Glow 👍
Ought to know is the best female anthem of all time. Just an amazing song.
Best version ever.!
The original version was a kick-ass angry anthem. This version is sad. It makes me feel the heartbreak that was always underneath the fire and rage.
Definitely less rage and more melancholy.
Alanis Morissette is like a fine wine the older it gets the better & beautiful it becomes and she can still sing Very well .
Well put!
@@kentamplin thanks Ken l could name two of your students who should cover that song l think you know with ones hint one starts with a X and the other a K
I absolutely love the way you give your observations, opinions, advice, and thoughts! 🙏💖🌹
I remember the young Alanis when I was a kid in Quebec, Canada, around 1991. My cousin had bought this album she was super excited about, simply called 'Alanis'. We kinda made fun of her. Could not believe my eyes and ears a few years later when she wowed us with _Jagged Little Pill._
It really was a, "wow" album!
It's nice to c her more mature. She sang her song well
Right on!
Alanis has a talent like no other!! Her voice touches the soul... I don't know anything like that. "you oughta know" version of the unplugged MTV is perfect with the orchestra accompanying it (in fact the whole record is pure perfection). Great video!!! Congratulations on the reaction! thanks 😉👏👏
😊
Almost three decades down the road, this song still brings tears to my eyes! This is such a controlled and effortless performance by Alanis! She is just something different!
Yo “Reasons I Drink” is my jam (from her upcoming record)
Right on!
You just never know how people will sound without the band and production. I was pleasantly suprised by her. Nice job Ken
I'm glad you liked it, Pamela!
I really like her music.
Awesome!
I still remember when I first heard this song. I was stopped at the corner of Summit and Lawerence in Muskogee, Oklahoma and it came on the radio. I loved the big, boomy, lo-fi drum sound. And her descending pitch melody parts always sound so great to me. It’s like she is gurgling and dying and just asking if the person that did this to her is going to do anything to help her. She was great at conveying emotion in both lyrics and melodies.
😊
What I like is she keeps her throat wide open and pumping with her lungs right through. Gives it rawness, plus her amazing pitch, yodel yes but hardly any head voice.
I'm so pleased her voice sounds so great after all this time! Jagged Little Pill came out when I first went to uni and I played it over and over on my cassette player. I hadn't heard anything like it before. She 'acted' out the lyrics so well in this performance. Thank you for this video!
I'm glad you enjoyed it, elarasophia!
"I wanna hear that version".Do it Ken!
I'll consider...
C'mon Ken, that's her Canadian accent shining through!
😊
Yep. I don't have hard R's I'm Canadian eh? Have a good day!
Unplugged she sounds amazing
And honestly she’s sooo attractive as she got older too
😊
Gotta love how she turned an emotional episode with a self indulgent douchebag into an eternal anthemic emotional release for all. She's right up there with Gwen Stefani.
Right on!
The best revenge song ever, thanks. Karen from Australia 🇦🇺
46 and still hitting those high notes , though , she does lean right and backward to find it , which is odd , but , still amazing , her Mezzo soprano voice is spectacular
👍
Watch again and you notice that she leans to the side and back to avoid singing directly into the mic because her voice is so loud and strong.
@@prettypoison9705 yes, with pipes like that you have to work the mike! It's the low range where you have to cozy up to the mike! Unless you're a female Alto or male bass.
Alanis Morissette wow😃👍loved the jaggered little pill album etc. Great reaction ken😃
Thanks!
Love the video, though that shirts a brave choice, respect 😁🤣👍
Thanks! 😃
Awesome reaction video Ken !! 🤘🤠👍
😊
Saw her live in Germany
Great female performer
That's great to hear!
Hey Ken, hope you are good and 2020 is treating you well! I played Jagged Little Pill to death back in the day. I really like this version, full of emotion ... wish I would have been in the audience! Keep doin your thang 👊
Thanks, Tubetart!
I can’t believe you just posted this - as I tried looking it up on your channel just a few days ago😀. I heard this a few months ago and really enjoyed it. I was surprised and thought she must have chosen to do it this way because she was in the studio with Howard. After listening of course I had to go find and listen to the rockin’ version! I remember sometime around ‘96 a neighbor across the way was blasting this and the Sears & Robuck prefab house they lived in was practically shaking from all the energy. And I loved it. Good memories😀.
😊
Awesome song, another talented class act.
Absolutely, VIDEOHEREBOB!
All right Ken. You have my attention right now. I have to watch Alanis, just have to.
Go for it!
love your stuff Ken (from Oz).
I like it! There is always sadness behind anger (part of the grieving process). It's nice to hear a different, softer version of such an iconic song.
Moral of the story: don't cheat, disappear, and not give the person you left without closure. Classic breaking up with a Narcissistic song. FYI...my guy friends have gone through the same with women.
Thank you for lending your knowledge and expertise to these reaction videos. I learn something each time. Unlike other people and their reactions where they tell the viewer the what we know which is that the song is good.
That's great to hear, Patrick!
Love this girls stuff , shes down to Earth !!! Great Choice Ken !!!
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Paul!
@@kentamplin Ken , I enjoy 99% all your mastery , Keep on keepin on !!!😊🐼
No one:
Ken: The first time I heard the song I tought it was MJ
😂😂
😄
Hi Ken, hope you are well. I like how your morality always shines through when you are commenting. It’s refreshing and needed, we as Christians must speak up and let the truth be heard.
They sure do!
Hi Ken love the videos, i always look forward to you uploading very insightful, hope you are having a good day !
Thank you!
You know , she actually sang this in pretty much the same style as the original. Some parts sounded identical. She's still killing it
Sirch One 👍
Very beautiful love this song ❤️👍🏻 look up hand in my pocket another awesome acoustic by her on the show
Thanks for the suggestion!
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy very welcome my friend
Matt Laug is the one credited and recorded the drums for You Oughta Know.
Ken I wish I could sing like you
One of my favorite songs of the 90's, my suggestion is a reaction to Ironic, have a great day Ken! 😃👏👏👍
Thanks for your suggestion!
Yes sir #AlanisMorissette 🎧❤👍
👍👍👍
Ken, I was in my late 20s, early 30s and this was every womans breakup album. Everytime I get in an bad arguement with my husband I rock this in the car. Lmoa🤣😂🤣I am glad your did this. When I use to drink and party, our group of girls use to go out and jam out to this as we cried during all of our break ups. Great reaction! ✌❤
I think that was true for most of her fans!
I love when you sing along. It's just hard not to! 👍👏
It really is, L. Reagan!
I have to love Alanis Morissette! as she is from my Home town Ottawa Ontario! I have to agree it is a very different version Ken!! But totally enjoyed it :)
Thanks!
Hello. Alanis Morisette 👍 . She's a great singer
😊
Love her💝
marinemomma62 👍
This song i dedicated to my fiance' ex now of course. When i caught him cheating on me with one of my really good friends. Alanis Morissette i loved her album jagged little pill i still own it both on cassette tape lol and cd. Great songs on there. Not sure if I'm digging this version though. But she has a beautiful voice. Great reaction as always. I love when you sing along ken i was singing along too. Hope you have an awesome day✌💓🎸
Thanks so much!
I agree with you Winchester. This version doesn't really appeal to me. Give me the aggressive original! 😉. The lyrics don't go with this acoustive versión. In the late 90s, she and Seal were my favorite soloists. I also love her song on the soundtrack of the movie "Dogma," though I can't remember the name of it.
Different bird for sure. She still throws it down really good. Always love the breakdowns.
David Brown 👍
This was beautiful. Her voice held up !
Yes, it has! That's great!
She. is. amazing.
She is!
Your right about one thing even a lay person like myself can make....she's doing a hell of a job, not just "phoning" it in like one might expect for an appearance and setting we see here. 😮
New sub here. I love your videos 🤘❤🖤
So glad you are here, Kris!
She’s amazing. Like a fine wine.
😊
Her album Jagged Little Pill Acoustic is all like this song. It's a great interpretation of an amazing album. I myself would get sick of singing the same song over and over again the same way for 25 plus years. Great reaction!
Glad you enjoyed it, Kyle!
What a great song by a great artist, not a great singer, but a real artist.
Confusing... No. Normal/50% talented singer could be a BIG artist.
Good choyce mr Tamplin
Stay Safe....like Batman below👇
😀
Ken,thanks for making my wish come true, and reacting to Alanis!I also prefer her earlier performances, but acoustic versions are very emotional..
I'm glad you enjoyed it,Ognjen!
Is her vibrato effortless? Sure seems that way. And this song makes me want to apologize to any woman that I might have hurt, if even slightly and inadvertently.
😊
Maybe you should? Couldn't hurt!
She is beautiful Ken not bad she's singing pretty good in this performance she does have great tones and pretty good pitch man she's not bad I've heard her sing crazy by seal she sings it great love her version of that some of her tones are kind of unique and funny sounding but that's her style Ken so yea she's a pretty good singer not to bad of a performance pretty pretty good Ken she does have great pitch not a bad performance it's pretty good Ken good reaction ken👍👍
Thanks Cade
Your welcome ken
@Gennady Golovkin lol
I just happened to repeat it alot I suppose it's a habit so yea
😘😘😘😘😘😘
Mohd Aidil 👍
Alanís love her
SmokinZen ❤️
Good reaction
Thank you!
Not that it was an appropriate age to be listening to the Jagged Little Pill album, but this song and Ironic was my favorite in 5th and 6th grade. I still love to sing a lot of songs from that album. Great video!!!
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Tonya!
Sweeeeeeeet Review :-) Hallelujah Ken
Glad you like it!
She used to be on a Canadian television show called "You Can't do that on Television"
😊
Оооооо!!!! Очень рад тебя видеть!!!! Твой позитив заразителен !!!!! You good man!!!
😊
She was my first crush as a teenager. Still love her to death.
Nice!
Man I told you I must be your younger brother. 😂😂right before you said great guitar parts I was thinking that too. And yes she killed it. (That’s a good saying just to clear that up). Great video my older brother.
I'm glad we agree, Blaine!
Love Alanis's deep lyrics but my favorite part here was when Ken spontaneously joined in with unbridled enthusiasm.
Brad McEwen 😁
Michael Jackson? OMG that’s so right on! You’re so sharp.
Igolfbuddy1969👍
I never listened to Howard Stern on the radio but I like these music videos. My favorite from the Howard Stern on You Tube is Sammy Hagar & The Circle playing " Finish What Ya Started" Thanks for the info on the flamingo artists
😊
She's got a really unique voice and uses it well..Have you seen the laundry list of musicians that worked with her on her albums?..They did an awesome job backing her up and the production was great..
😊
Alanis is in a class above most. The only one I feel compares today is Lana Del Rey, for writing all of her own stuff and being so lyrically intense and taking creative risks.
Something usually unmentioned that (imho) makes a great vocalist great is being able to write unique but still memorable tunes with their voice. Steve Perry, early Robin Zander, etc are good examples (imho again).
😊
Hi Ken! Alanis taught scorned women everywhere that men may think they are free from them but guess what...these angry women are never going away...ever. The flamenco guitar really makes the lyrics pop. To be serious this was a good performance with a fresh guitar composition. Thanks Ken.
The scorned women may be angry forever but not sure the scorner really cares or thinks about it.
This was so different for me !! Although I know the lyrics, boy do they come at ya on this !! LOL - She has a fantastic voice !!
I know what you mean, Lisa!
so do we ken we want to hear a ken tamplin hard rock version off this song
😊
Her voice sort of reminds me of D’olores from The Cranberries with the yodeling sort of thing. What do you think Ken?
😊
I completely agree. Different voices, similar techniques. Love Dolores by the way
Love the original version of this song! The raw emotion in her voice came out so strongly and you felt her pain and anger.
Guess she's gotten past that, thus not singing that version of the song anymore.
That could be the case.
Hi Ken, it was actually Flea playing bass from chilli peppers and Dave Navarro playing guitar on the studio version of you oughta know
Thank you Pierre.
Nice 🔥,
Hey Ken I have a question, is it ok when you are singing to take the breathe with your mouth instead of only from your nose? Does it make any difference?
Really great conversation for the forum. Please post there, beneath "General Singing". Other singers will benefit from the reply and you will receive great feedback from either myself or one of my commentators. It's free! forum.kentamplinvocalacademy.com/
Thanks Ken 🙏🏼
This is probably off topic but I'm trying to grow out my hair as long as yours so do you have any tips on hair for me? Thanks!
Keep your ends trimmed and keep your hair clean.
@@kentamplin thank you!
I still love her appearance on Curb Your Enthusiasm years ago. How about doing an analysis of the late Sandy Denny (Fairport Convention, Fotheringay)? She truly had an unbelievable voice. Trust me.
😊
See what love does?! 💔 100% of her angry hurt emotion and we all felt it 🥺 There are too many to count but this has to be the best/saddest heartbreak song in history.
Absolutely, Joe!
Supposedly this song was written about her relationship with Dave Coulier, the actor from Full House. I believe she was 14 or 15 when it began. He was quite a bit older. Hopefully after all these years the pain has become less sharp. Perhaps that's why she does this slower less intense version. I still love it.....and her.
Thanks for that tidbit, LJ Stevens!
She almost yodels it seems to me. Good to watch you again Ken . I’ve changed channels and I’ve been pretty ill. This is Patricia Fisher - Tolman.
Hi Patricia. I hope you are feeling better.
I saw this on Sterns channel a bit ago. And upon further examination there are many very good musical encapsulations on there! e.g.Billie Eilish, 3 Doors Down, Scott Weiland, etc.. Stern has some good shi@# on his show on occasion. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for stopping by.
Great vid!! Check out Flamenco guitarist Willie "El Curro" Champion, a native of San Antonio, Texas achieved international fame touring with Jose Greco and appeared in John Wayne's movie "The Alamo". Also his wife, Teresa, danced on the table in the Alamo movie. So cool!!
😊
When we going to hear your take on Bono of U2 Ken? Id love to hear your thoughts on sometimes you can't make it on your own, particularly the big opera note. Anyway, keep rocking!
😊
I'm like 95% sure Taylor Hawkins played drums on that track, which also featured the Flea and Dave Navarro...
Rock on!
Alanis has such a powerful voice no auto tune just give her a microphone and enjoy. That's a good Canadian girl. Also Ken dropping knowledge about you can't do that on television. That's old school Canadian classic TV. That and the littlest hobo lol
😊
Very cool version kind of odd but I liked it. She seems to sing so effortlessly. Still waiting on that time of how long you can hold a note Ken!🤩
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Ronda!
I love Alanis. JLP is a great album, every single track.
😊
The Civil Wars please!
Thank you!
Thank you! Love from Canadia!
I have to admit the studio album version of this song is so much better because it really reaches into you and pulls those feels out, when you hear it your like dam someone really hurt that woman and they need a butt kickin', lol
Indeed!
Luka from Susan Vega is also a quiet song with angry lyrics
Thanks, Filip!
Nice review. Now do Deep Purple, Sweet Child In Time live.
Thanks for the suggestion, Ned!
