    I've been successfully selling 3d assets for several years now, on average making around 600$ from 3d assets per month between a few of the main platforms. From memory i have maybe 30 models or so. It takes several months to build up speed with consistent income. Highly recommend people find a niche category and focus only on that category at a high quality. For example, create and sell only hats. Trust me, 1 year from now, you will be know as the 3d hat guy lol :) Focus on making them Unreal / Unity ready, so they can drag and drop them right into an engine. 3d is converging towards real time platforms in film, Arch Viz, VR etc so definitely good to be on top of that. Try to imagine where 3d will be 10-20 years from now and make yourself future ready!

    I think the key is to remember that most people/companies purchasing models need assets that take a lot of time to create, but do not add significant value or unique character/storytelling to their production. For example, trees, furniture, set dressing, electronic devices and other high effort, generic assets are something that a production will gladly buy, because they don’t require specific art direction and they cost less than paying an in-house modeler to create. A highly stylized character is something that few productions will buy, because that is something they would need to art direct in house to match the exact needs of their production. Ironic given that this video shows stylized characters throughout!

      That is very very true. I work for a company that buys a lot of 3D models, just because we don't have the time to model a car, a set of furniture or foliage.
      I think the best way artists can earn money is by making their product "scaleable" and "editable".
      Making your product subdivideable, providing Substance scene files, providing both low poly and high poly meshes.
      And providing PBR textures ofcourse.
      I see way too many product, where only the diffuse, normal map and low poly mesh are being sold....

    It has only turned out this way because people sell them selves short, 3D modeling is an advanced skill that requires a lot of training and a moderate amount of intelligence. I think because it can also be highly enjoyable, people are willing to do it for way less than they should.
    My advice would be, don't hunker down to sell assets from a store. Be a problem solver, let companies know that you make high quality custom models fast, and that you are easy to work with, they will pay you a lot for the expertise. It is so much more valuable than getting a pre made model. And attempting to force it into your project.

    • @ishitrealbad3039
      @ishitrealbad3039 Před 3 lety +3

      True, I see way many models on the market that are just dirt cheap for the quality they provide...
      Artists in general are not entrepeneuers and managers, thus they are less skilled in economics and "business".
      You as an artist are not just selling a 3D model;
      You are selling your skill - The quality of the model
      You are selling PBR textures - Knowledge of how physics affect materials and such.
      You are selling sub models - High poly and low poly
      You are selling file formats - Scene files, Export files
      One model includes all the packages described above.
      Artist should spend more time evaluating their product and giving it the proper price tag.
      PS.
      I've also seen way too many models that are just piss poor bad, while artists are asking the jackpot for those models...

      Exactly what I thought. I am new in 3D modelling and quite love it, and became decent in poly modelling and rendering in Maya, and was interested in making all kinds of models and selling them this summer since I have a lot of free time ( break from University). I really think 3D models should sell for a higher price, since both skill and time are really being invested. I think we all should just start appreciating ourselves more, and not making lives of companies and employers easier by just going to a site and buying a fully ready detailed 3D model for around 50 bucks.

    Something not mentioned in your video is the income from your modeling is passive but it's also ongoing. if someone buys your model, they are buying a copy not the original. You don't have to restock the model, it can and will be sold many times. Any income from your modeling is ad infinitum.

    I think it is important to see this kind of stuff as passive income, even if you are looking to make this your main source of income, how much you make is bound to fluctuate over the course of weeks/months and only actually becomes profitable over time, after several sales, it is just the nature of this kind of selling. Which is why it is a big deal to either make things that will either sell a lot, or sell stuff you that you happened to already invest time on, like a personal project or something made for a client but you didn't really use.

      Yes most models are between $5 and $30 if sold separately, but some of those models have more than 1k sales
      Also with patreon models, you can find some freelance modelers who have anywhere between 400 and 2000 monthly subscribers for $5 to $15, it all depends on the quality of the products and the type of models they release each month
      Some larger groups or digital studios even have more than 6500 patreon, paying at least a $10 monthly fee "sometimes even more for commercial licenses"

It was normal to sell 1 model for $200-900 at that time. Today all the markets are overpopulated with proposition way higher than demand and customers expect high-quality models at 10-20$. At some point, it was not worth for our company to continue as the market drop has outrun all the efforts of making new products. but why sell at all if you can't even make a living out of it? Modelling takes a looooooot of practice/work. Longer than any apprenticeship or study at university. Why sell at all if this effort is not appreiciated? let the market suffer until they value it. What we are also lacking of as 3d artists is a b2c market. All of this is B2B and that works only by either doing significant price changes overall or by opening up a B2C market with a broader audience? so why doesnt the B2C market work so far? Because the customer base over the years built up an expectation of free extra content and would bash on any content market model, as well as the developers being afraid of this reaction. So all in all the players salt their own soup. Like I said.. there need to be an significant change before I consider selling models like that.

    Another thing some people do bias about sometimes but idk if it's but I'd like to know the truth from it. The different use of Programs that output models. When companies sees models that made from 3DS Max or Maya they know the artist has been using the Industry Standard Level in terms of what program to use but as the video does state for one of the artists comments about having the different types of Material, Shading and other mapping("Something that is a must for getting to the well known state as the video states"), then comes Blender with it slowly growing out into the world and slowly working it's way into a Industry level standard Program. But personally I don't understand why there's a bias in terms of what Programs models are produced from. Other then that this video made some very nice high lights in terms of model selling since I wanted to go into that area. But RIP I need to step my game up If I need to catch up.

    • @Legend64Project
      @Legend64Project Před 3 lety +1

      The bias thing comes from the early days of Blender when it was primarily used by amateurs or hobbyists. Meanwhile the only people who could afford access to Maya or Max, were either professionals or students studying to be a professional. Therefore there was a huge disparity between the quality of work being produced by “free to use” compared to “paid for” programs. However in recent times Blender has brought itself up to the industry standard, so more and more professional artists are starting to adopt it. A great channel by the name of Arrimus 3D does some amazing modeling in 3DS max but has now started branching out into Blender because he wants to stay competitive. Honestly though, it doesn’t matter what software you use as long as you understand the principles of 3D modeling. This knowledge is transferable between all software. The negative stigma surrounding Blender these days usually comes from elitists who still view at as an amateurs tool. I myself am a Max/Maya user but the extreme price tag for the software is going to make me switch to Blender once my student license runs out.

      first of all 3d artists do practice art because it is what makes them feel alive and happy and because they are fulfilling their potential in life. the second thing you don't have to rely on one thing as a 3d artist. you can work as a freelancer and sell 3d models, you can work a non-artistic job and as 3d artist part-time. you can sell 3D animations, Stock images/renders, you can sell addons, you can create a blog, a CZcams channel, you can sell courses, you can sell books.
      in fact, I like hard things because it means less competition and more money. for example, if selling 3d models is hard, you need to think outside of the box, you can work on unique 3d models that no one is making, you can create your own outsourcing studio and sell directly to studios/companies.... good luck buddy.

      @ishitrealbad3039 Před 3 lety

      Yes and no. Being a generalist means you can do everything at a mediocre level, meaning you'll be outclassed by almost anyone who specializes in a certain field.
      You'll be outclasses in terms of skill, quality delivered and time.
      You also have to spend more time keeping your skills sharp in every 3d field.
      A generalist is more likely to be hired in the long run, while a specialist is more likely to be fired once X skill is not required anymore.

      But I am being realistic about my situation. you are not going to tell many people that you only do one thing, perfectly. So the client will have to hire 5 people to do a project perfectly and that can certainly happen.

    I have been selling some assets on CGTrader for a while now, didn't make too much of course(unfortunately).. But i realized a strange thing there. Sometimes there can be some assets that no one would normally think "good" but somehow sits to the top selling list!.. I mean they don't even look the half of the some of my early assets(which sell rarely) but they seem to sell much somehow (Even with high price!).. I'm thinking that some people buy their own models (via multiple accounts maybe) to make it seem sell too much, so everyone can see the models and think they are good and buy them.. If this is true than they're simply killing the market! And this didn't happen once or twice. I don't know if this is happening in other platforms but that's just unfair.. People are spending days of efforts to make those assets to make a couple bucks(so they can live!) but thanks to these people, we artists are running out of options..

    • @ishitrealbad3039
      @ishitrealbad3039 Před 3 lety

      Problems with that is that you have to market your website, because nobody will be able to find your website when you start up and you have to compete with existing website.
      Meaning you're competing your product with others and your website with others + a website and setting up payments are also costly (unless you're a webdeveloper who knows what he's doing).
      If you want to sell your own product on your own website, you should prioritize one type of product.
      For example Poliigon started off selling PBR textures.
      Now they sell high quality and 3D scanned assets too.
      RD textures sells high quality photoscanned textures with SBS files.
      If you want to have a website to compete with Turbosquid or CGtrader, you'll have to offer a service that neither of these websites provide to even win the competition.

      As one of those giants, I can tell you that you are competing not with us but with the same people as yourself. I wouldn't buy a model for a game if there are other games using it. That will backfire on the "whole" industry (I mean the part of it that can't afford to hire the professionals needed), when you recognize many characters repeated in many different games. I think making it exclusive and increasing the price will be a better strategy for freelancers, specially if what I said ends up happening for real. Otherwise I think it would be better to aim for the 3d printing market, but I feel like TG community is not spending much money in this as they did with well-known tabletop games.

    you should ask yourself, is the earning worth the time and effort spent on a single 3d model? The market is very limited. Most game developers or agencies likely have their own library or suppliers of 3d models. This is only good to earn extra or passively. Don't forget that you create 3d because you love doing so, making money out of it is secondary.

  • @milantiquestudios7460

    Got it. Dont live in California. lol.
    Really arent we just selling the 3D art to ourselves, other 3D artists? Whether you are a programmer who wants models or a someone who has a 3D printer. The real market is selling a car to a car company because they dont want to pay an artist $20 an hour for a week when they could just spend a couple hundred and get it right away. We just dont make a product for the average joe. And who we do make it for, doesnt have a lot of money or doesnt want to spend a lot of money on our models.
